I have a 100mb data plan, so I have to be stingy. I turn off sync and only turn on mobile data if I need it, but I was wondering if there was a way to automatically turn sync off on mobile data and on for Wifi? Also with sync off do I still get gmail pushed to me?
I'm using Timeriffic to at specific time automatically turn on my Wifi to let it sync, and at another specific time to off it. Timeriffic can also toggle on/off for APNdroid, which is another App that turn on/off data.
I would check if Locale in the Market would give you the option to automatically turn off Sync when Mobile Data is on, and on for WiFi. If it doesn't have the option, check if there's a Locale plugin that'll give it to you.
Locale is a bit pricey, but it might be exactly what you want.

Yea, I used to have Locale for my G1 when it was free but I don't know if I am willing to pay for it. Just wondering if there was a free alternative.

Hi!
Going abroad and dont want to risk a huge data roaming-bill. Is there any way to turn off data roaming? Preferrably Wifi would still work, but if that's not possible then all data off.
HD Tweak is a nice little application which includes an option to disable data connections all together. I'm pretty sure this option will prevent you recieving data even if you tried to (ie not just background tasks) but will still allow wi-fi to work.
NoData

You might want to give "NoData" a go. This very small application (.cab) install creates an icon called NoData in programs. If you select this it runs the small app and asks what data connection you want to disable or re-enable.
It is ideal for what you want and many use it. Take a look at Paul's work here on Modaco (another good WM site): http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/

I use NoData. Handy app which allows you to toggle Internet/data connections on/off so only wifi is available
as above.. i dont want some google maps or weather refresh to kill my wallet !!
any program or tweak to totally disappear data no matter how often programs call for it?
much appreciated
Search this forum for an application called NoData.
Airplane mode?
Use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=503131
Airplane mode disables everything
oh...since im using prepaid services, is it a must to install the nodata tweaks?
aren't there any data on/off selection under the default settings on the phone?
that is to say, if i did not off the data connections, the phone will automatically engage gprs or sort to update weather and maps which will in turn kill all the credits in my prepaid without me realizing? that's scary...
bsb tweaks let's you disable data connections. Just tried it and when trying to establish a connection it gives me an error telling me it's not possible to go online.
so the tweaks works in another words? i will only be using wifi to go online with hd2..
Hi, I need help. I just installed openclair 2.1, but I keep downloading data from the internet. Is it possible to off GPRS or trigger it? I dun want to spend any money on data transfer.

Well, background data is required when you want to access market or want to sync your contacts, calendar, and events with google...if you don't need market, you can disable this option...
If you want to, you can create a dummy APN with no server address. Once you connect to it, the mobile internet will stop connecting.
COuld you teach me how to create? I am abit not sure about this.
Go to Settings>Wireless & Network>Mobile Network>Access Point Names>Menu>New APN.
Now type the Name as 'Off' and type the APN as 'dummy' and save it. When you select that APN, your Mobile internet will turn off.
Cheers.
I am going to the USA later this week and don't want to get stung with huge data roaming charges. Is there any way to force data to stay off, with an option to use wifi if needed? I used to use a program on my windows mobile called NODATA...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try this:
1. Type *#*#4636#*#* on your dial pad
2. Select "Phone Information"
3. Press "Menu" soft key
4. Select "More"
5. Select "Disable Data on Boot"
6. Reboot
Now data should be disabled (you won't see E/3G icons in the notification bar) and you can use WiFi whenever you want.
you can use my app "data on demand" for that (in the market). i would also recommend turning settings->wireless and network->mobile networks->data roaming OFF! this always worked for me!
I was just going to post the same thing...
Don't anybof the standard system settings provide the functionality to do the same? e.g. limit to 2g only and/or turning off data updates and/or data roaming etc. ?
Will check the app out though... If you do the keypad option, how do you then reenable or does it just come back on with a reboot meaning you have to do it each time you turn the phone on...?

Setting 2G only wouldn't stop data use, only high-speed data (though that would curtail the rate at which you can accumulate it). There is a setting to not use data while roaming, which should work, though entering incorrect data in the APN settings as I think these programs do would work too.

Settings->Wireless and Network->Mobile Networks->Uncheck Data roaming
That will disable any data use on networks other than your home-network! No other settings/configs are necessary!

Good. That's what I was hoping for/assumed it may do.
this topic should be stickied
Install APNdroid. You can place a widget on the homescreen to turn on, off APNs:

Thanks guys, much appreciated!

I was wondering this also as i am due to go away, but i still want to send and receive MMS (as it is included in my allowance) whilst away. So the question is, if i choose not to have data whilst roaming will this also stop MMS as this is also data? I have a suspicion that it would, so, would the only other option be to just put some bogus APN settings in for internet but keep my MMS settings as it should be? Any ideas? Thanks a lot.
Don't know why people are going into this vast overkill....
Just go into your settings, wireless networks, ensure "Enable data while roaming" is unchecked. In fact, it will be unchecked by default, at least in the Bell rom.
This setting works perfectly (I just went to the US this past weekend), so i see no reason to screw around with the APN or reboot the phone or install other hacky apps. If this box is unchecked the instant you switch to roaming your data is disabled.
Hi,
I'm having a weird issue with the data connection.
When i turn it off, it will automatically turn itself on when any application that requires internet tries to connect.
I've read somewhere that the cause of this is an application that has auto-scheduling tries to connect (e.g. email, weather, ...). But this cant be, right?
Isn't the meaning of data connection "OFF" that no application what-so-ever has internet acces. Even when they sync automaticly...?
Have a look here.
Hope it helps.
download NoData u can turn off your data connection with that, or just modify the internet settings
The weather tab, stocks tab, facebook, twitter could be configured to download data periodically.
My advice is to remove these tabs and services. They're useless and a tremendous resource hog anyway.
Use the long-press end key to cut off data connection manually.
Install "Data Controller" app to disable and enable data connection whenever you want to. Disable it most of the time, during regular use. This will prevent any accidental or unwanted preconfigured access to internet. Enable it in special situations if you really need to use it. Disable it again after use.
Data Controller is easier to use than NoData. Although, both of them works fine.
Use this app to disable internet access only. Leave the mms access enabled. That way, you'll be able to receive mms anytime. Mms shuts itself down automatically after every use. So you don't have to disable this one.
