.mkv and subtitles

I was looking around and saw that the video player does not display the subtitles for .mkv files...does anyone know if it would be possible to somehow enable the video player to be able to display them?

I've got the same question. If the default player doesn't play mkvs with subtitles, is there another player that does so (already tried Rock Player).

I think we're outta luck. I asked this question a while back and got nothing but crickets.

If you absolutely need the subtitles, you could always hard encode them, but it is probably only worth the time if you absolutely cannot do without subtitles.

Nothing on the market right now which will get the subtitles. It sucks I know. There is a player in development that will support it but its not too close to release.

It has pretty decent support for subtitles. Not sure if it plays embedded ones in mkv's, but it definitely does support subtitles.

Strange, I recall seeing a thread on Xda that had the same question but there was a guy who posted a picture/screencap of mkv and subtitles playing on a video player. I should have bookmarked that thread.

I've tried this but it didn't work. I extract the subs in .ass format and tried to load it but mVideoPlayer couldn't find the file even after I change the directory.

Try searching for meridian player in the market.

Did you make sure to rename the .ass file to match the .mkv you extracted it from? Make sure the file names match and put them both in the same directory on your phone. mVideoPlayer will load the subs automatically after you open the .mkv. It works flawlessly for me on my Galaxy S.

To view MKV files with subtitles, I've been using MKVtoolnix with MKVextractGUI to extract the subtitles from the MKV container. After the extraction, make sure the subtitle file(.ass, .srt, etc.) has the same name as the MKV file and place it in the same folder as the video. When that's done, use mVideoPlayer to play your file.

the problem with supporting subtitles in .mkv containers...is just that....mkv is JUST a container format, which can contain a myriad of video, audio, and subtitle file formats. And there are several subtitle file formats...
mVideoplayer supports external .SRT subs, so what one can do is use a tool like virtualdubmod or mkvtoolnix to demux subs out of the mkv container and assuming they are SRT, just extract them and name them to the exact name of the MKV file. it's also possible to download SRT subs fairly easily for common videos, but there's the possibility that text timing can be off....
...apparently mVideoPlayer supports .ass as well....

Oh, I just had to place the subs in the same folder as the Video. That worked for me.

Breaking: mVideoPlayer 2.20 updates states that it now supports subs in MKV's. I haven't tried it yet, I'm just now dling it.

Yep, now it is time again for another beta version of mVideoPlayer. This time the big news are subtitle support in mkv files for phones that support playback of these files. (Galaxy S for example).
Full change-log:
- Support for subtitles in MKV files for all Galaxy S owners!
- Toggle subtitle on/off has been replaced with 'Subtitle Tracks' since MKV files may have multiple subtitle tracks.
- Now remembers previous search phrase in all search dialogs.
- IMDb Info accessible from poster search activity through long press on movie.
- Fix for poster search cache showing up in Gallery app on Android < 2.2 devices.

[Q] Android Video Playback

I have installed this rom -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814285
and had also installed the famour Azure 1.0.1 by aliba
i found both couldnt play some mp4
so my question is that does android support mp4 playback ? if it does how will i put it in my current rom [ i have tried 3rd part video players , it failed].
and what video extensions does a normal aOS support ?!

AFAIK, mp4 is a file container and many things depend on the codec that was used to encode the video file. Personaly i'm using Handbrake to encode videos for watching them on my Legend, so if you want i could share the "proper" preset for this task.

I found out that for some reason x264/mp3 doesn't work...

I installed Rock Player yesterday, which supports more file formats. I haven't tried a lot but it plays my downloaded Simpsons episodes just fine. They're in Xvid btw.

Does it work well for you? I got the free version and sometimes it loses audio/video sync...Any issues like that?

It works well but I've only tried short videos like tv show episodes. I read that longer complex videos might lose av sync at some points.

Download and install Handbrake (free app). The preset is attached bellow this post, (if you're using Windows Vista / Seven) move it to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\HandBrake
Use preset called "Legend". Good luck
EDIT: don't forget to extract attached file.

is there a better player than rockplayer?
videos that arent 480x320 work incredible bad on my legend. itself the 5800 had a better video playback function than just every player i tried so far on the legend.

Convert using VLC player?

Does anyone know what the settings would be to convert hd video file to the proper H.264 format using VLC player. I heard there was a how to but i can not find it. does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Have you thought of using XMedia Recode. It is a donationware video and audio transcoding program for Microsoft Windows developed by Sebastian Dörfler.

I have been using AVS Video Converter lately and it is great. Always in sync and easy to use. Not free though.

I actually got an older version of AVS Video Converter. I can't figure out what format to convert to though. I hope, and guess, that our programs can expoert to about the same formats.
Which format do you use? I wanna covert into either 720p or 1080p.

Cant play any mp4

So I downloaded Foxreal converter to convert some AVI movies I have to mp4 so my GF can watch them while I'm playing poker at the casino....great plan to keep her occupied right? One problem - THEY WONT PLAY!
I have downloaded moboplayer, qqplayer, rock player, rock player lite and none of them will play the friggin mp4 files.
What am I doing wrong? I am converting them specifically to the Android > Xoom > 720p output which is a preset in the application? I am then copying the mp4 file over to my Xoom in the "Movies" folder.
Is there some other way to do this because all the players so it can't play this type of file?

I use badaboom and it have a tab for the xoom. And everything works. There is a trial that you can download

Have you tried to play back the mp4 files on the computer to see if they are working files? Also, do you know if you encoded it as h.264 baseline? Sorry, but I am not familiar with this program. I personally use handbrake/adobe media encoder.

I just downloaded Dvdcatalyst and handbrake. Tried DVDcatalyst and used the preset standard xoom format and it wouldn't play that either.
I am now converting using Handbrake...i am keeping my fingers crossed. I used one of the imported plist settings from another post I saw on here.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the source format of the AVI's I am using?
They are all DVDrips that I have downloaded, I'm thinking about trying to rip one of my actual DVD's and seeing if that works.

MHL HDMI movie output with subtitle

I have problem to find app which support movie play via HDMI output with subtitle.
On my device I see movie playing with subtitle (.srt) but on TV I see only movie but withouth subtitle.
Does anybody have any proposal how to fix that or which app do show subtitle on output HDMI. To include subtitle into movie as is not optional becouse I can't convert movie every time I want to look TV via phone MHL.
For movies I think format like .avi, .mkv, mp4 etc...

It does on my Galaxy Tab 7" ...

I use MoboPlayer, tried also DicePlayer.. I did not try "standard" included player...

I have tried both standard and mobo player, both show subtitle on the TV using MHL!
redzion: Does the sub and video file got exactly the same name? And is the sub file an .srt file? If not, try converting the sub file to .srt

ok. problem was in filename.. strange that subs did work on device but not on tv, now when subs have same name work on boths sides..

What i have found about stock player is you can't have more than one subtitle file for example:
nameofthevideofile.ENG.srt
nameofthevideofile.SPA.srt
I know mVideoPlayer can load different srt files but i'm not sure it can display the subtitles over MHL. I'm going to try it and post results.

Ok my little experiment with subtitles and MHL:
Stock player shows subtitles both phone and MHL
mVideoPlayer only shows subtitles on the phone screen
MoboPlayer only shows subtitles on the phone screen
RockPlayer shows subtitles both phone and MHL only in software decoding mode. In hardware decoding software subtitles are shown only on the phone screen
DicePlayer only shows subtitles on the phone screen
Those are the tests so far. Only mVideoPlayer allows me to choose the srt file (several languages for example).

Had the same problem and answer bellow helped me to see the subtitles on TV screen. The only limitation I currently see is that the internal player control the size of font on the phone screen but not change it externally. In addition, the subtitles position in both screens are slightly different, which point on different processing for internal and external view.
In addition I had a problem that the Hebrew subtitles does not shown but I saw question marks.
After some investigation and tests I found that the internal player on my Galaxy 2 accept only unicode srt files, designed for RTL read. Since most of the subtitles in Hebrew are historically published as ANSI and LTR read (since the DVD appliance days that were limited to this format. Currently most software and streamers read all formats) I had to convert it twice:
1) Open the ANSI file in Subtitles Workshop and fix punctuation (Subtitles Workshop works only with ANSI files).
2) Convert the file to Unicode (using Notepad "save as" command and choosing Unicode or UTF-8 format).
BTW, usually I use mVideoPlayer. It requires RTL file so I had to do the first step any way before transferring the movie to the phone, but then it doesn't support the Unicode file that I saved. After more test I found that it plays UTF-8 files. Since the internal player is luckily support both Unicode and UTF-8 formats, I can keep only one file in UTF-8 format and RTL direction of punctuation.
The only problem is that Subtitles Workshop doesn't support not Unicode neither UTF-8, so if the srt file is originally in these format, I can't fix the punctuation direction (I didn't find another tool) unless I lose the special characters like notes you can find mainly in musical.
Hope this helps for other users, specially for RTL language users (Hebrew/Arabic).

I use MoboPlayer and BsPlayer and both reproduce video with subtitle on TV via MHL, only you has to play the video with Soft Decoding.

Hdmi with subs
I dont know if i help you but i made it to see movie from samsung galaxy s2 to tv with subs.I open e.m. total video converter,put movie with subs for permanent use and i play with mvideoplayer on my tv and the subs play perfect.I am from Greece and my subs play ok.Sorry for my English.
