My Nexus One will be here tomorrow, and I am wondering what the Pro's and Con's of rooting are.
I've rooted before. I had a G1, but I bricked it, accidentally. Won't stop me from rooting the Nexus, but just give me some reasons why.
I obviously know about cooked roms, etc. I've read about the Desire rom with Sense UI, is it worth it?
Just want your input.
The "search" function of the forums is a great feature. I've seen several threads about this very subject already.
Its definitely worth it! I enjoyed the phone stock, but when i rooted and went with cyanogen 5053. I couldnt happier. I thought the phone was fast already, but with the ROM, its a step above!
And plus some apps from the market are only for rooted phones. SetCPU (underclocking app) is one of them, and has helped me out with battery life. moderate use, i got about 18 hours yesterday with still 35% left on the battery.

This is exactly why I don't post alot.
@stuff: I rooted my n1 and flashed cyanogen 5053 and gotta say it's alot faster! If your the kind of guy that gets alot of apps and games like me there is another feature of rooted phones called apps2sd. Apps2sd allows you to set a partition size of your choosing on your sd card for use of storing installed apps and games. That way you are not limited to the internal phone memory. Also as h2opoloplyr_11 stated there are some apps that require your phone to be rooted. Thats all I can think of right now as I am new to android and the n1 but I'm sure there are more reasons and more reasons to come as devs get creative.

It has nothing to do with getting our post counts up and everything to do with having a clean, uncluttered and efficient forum. No one likes to see the same questions asked every few days. The point of a forum is for it to serve as a repository of information to help and educate future enthusiasts. This guy isn't special and somehow entitled to create another redundant thread instead of using the search function like the rest of us do.. Not to mention he said in his original post that he rooted his G1.

Why the hell isn't there an official stickied topic listing the pros and cons of rooting your device. The first thing people would see before they go asking repeated questions would be that thread.
Good question...the info was stickies in the G1 forum..probably still is.

What could have been very simple has turned to a two page topic with only a few post that actually answer the question and it's not because of the op. It's because of all the other post within the topic that are completely of topic including this one.

Hi guys,
There is an arrow icon to the left of my 3G icon, and I was wondering if anyone knew what it was? it shows two white arrows forming a loop but I can't find it in the manual.
Can someone let me know?
Thanks!
That's the sync service running (GMail, Contacts, Calendar, etc).
If it keeps running forever, you might have an issue, but it should pop up from time to time.
It was running forever and I realized it was failing to synch, a data reset fixed.

Anybody have any ideas. I am aware that devs are not supporting the original leak. But im just looking for info more than anything. Every once in a while i will hit the home button and as soon as i return to the home screen the calendar clock, and the feeds and updates widget are no longer there.
I think I know what you're talking about. If you wait a little bit they come back... think it's the launcher resetting. Did it to me a lot too, switched to super clean, haven't seen it since *knock on wood*.
This belongs in general. Read Me
But it happens to me to with beautiful widgets. Time and again. i just deal with it since this is not the final build.
I understand what your guys are saying but thats not my problem. im fully aware that if you use adobe flash, or apps that use a lot of resources that if you hit home sometimes it will refresh the home screen (happened all the time on the Original droid). My problem is the widgets disappear all together meaning they dont reappear. Ohh and this isnt a general question this question refers to an unofficial rom aka ROM DEVELOPMENT!!!
Also its not all the widgets that disappear it just the Samsung widgets (i only use calendar clock, and feeds and updates widget)
If you read that link you would see that your question should have gone in the leak thread. Or your thread should have been started in general. Why must people try to justify their mistakes?
good day. From the Fascinate sporting the XDA app.
Here are few key excerpts so you don't have to read the whole thing:
If you have developed a ROM, or are working with others to do so, the development forum is somewhere to discuss and share ideas, post useful feedback and logs or crash dumps, and to discuss a common goal developers are trying to achieve.
Once you have identified what you need help with go to the device Q&A forum (general if device lacks one), and make a clear, informative thread that explains the issue, and what you have tried doing to fix it. Did you re-download the ROM? Did you ask a friend to flash it for you, to reduce chance of user error? What steps (exactly) did you follow? What errors did you see (exact wording)? Did you double check all the steps? Did you do a wipe or hard reset?
So remember… before you start a thread in development, ask yourself what you are developing. If you can’t answer, then stop, step away from the post button, and think about where you are posting. Would it be better in General or Q&A, or is some more time with your best friend, search, required?

Seriously? He just wanted to know why his Widgets are disappearing. If you seriously expect anyone new to this forum to read through a big list of rules, it sucks all the fun out of being an android user. He posted in the wrong section, we get it. It's now dead and done. Let's try and help with an explanation as opposed to making him feel stupid for posting in the wrong section. If it's as simple as telling them once to not post such things in here again and move the thread, why doesn't that just happen?

^I agree with you wholeheartedly, and I dont think they were trying to attack him personally, but...
it's a matter of frustration that established users have here with people completely disregarding the rules (and this is coming from someone with low post count). To my understanding the development fora are supposed to be FOR devs, not end-users. I think our role as end-users (in this development forum) is to provide support in terms of bug reporting (or whatever the dev might need) and such WITHIN specific dev threads. By not adhering to the rules, new users are unintentionally changing the dynamic of how these fora are supposed to operate.
So they're not trying to be d*cks, they're just trying to maintain the integrity of this forum.

Here is the very next post. It shows the original poster, who obviously didn't read the provided readme in the above post, attempting to justify his posting in the wrong section. This is where it became an issue, when the OP, instead of admitting his mistake and avoiding misplaced topics in the future (which would be perfectly forgivable, and not a problem) defends his uninformed postition with his own flawed logic.

Easy solution: Read the rules, and when you're corrected by someone with 10 times your post count, who provides verification, just admit you were wrong.
How about a solution to this problem,, in the sub forum section page change the expalnation of the 4 sub forums to capatilazation and place it before the actual sub forum link and change the sub forum link to un capitalized font . I think this might help force people to rerad first before clicking the link.

No one has a problem with everyone being able to post in the development forum, Just people cluttering it up with things that belong in the general forum. I will never understand how people can argue so hard for anarchy. If developers and veterans are complaining about the state of the site, then maybe you ought to get your act together or we'll just leave. Then who's going to help you with your issues? Other noobs who have won the right to post wherever the hell they want by driving off the people who actually make roms and mods and fixes. If the op wanted a topic for his specific issue, he should have posted it in general. If he wanted to post in development he should have done so in the thread for the rom he is using, not created a new thread. It's clearly stated in the rules. Why is that such a problem to some people?

Thanks for the reply, but as you may have guessed, I am new at this, thus "root it" does not mean a lot to me.
By the way, saying "root it" to a bunch of Aussies might get you a few laughs in mixed company.
If you can direct me to any site or method with step-by-step procedures it would be a big help.

This is the easiest way

Rooting gives you a level of permissions that allow you to modify system files and play around with things in non-userspace. Relevant threads will have moer info on that, or you can peruse the Wiki (link up top).
Regarding the preinstalled apps, my advice is not to even bother deleting them. It's not entirely trivial to figure out what the phone needs to run, and you might find out later that something you removed all of a sudden is necessary again. Also, the stock ROM has frameworks and stuff installed by HTC that you can't get rid of anyway. I think it's much much easier to install a custom ROM that has all that stuff removed right from the start.
We call those apps "bloatware", I can't believe none of you told him this yet..... grankins post for s-off(he has two save the ultimate for if your having troubles) is the most affective, use his alternate method midway through his OP.

The reason i didn't mention the Ultimate Guide was he asked for the easiest method. That is not per-say the easiest method. But i know it's the most effective method.
I didn't suggest ultimate either, it was for a backup plan if no success..... I refuse to use gfree, as I have no need for it.

It is pretty unbelievable that T-mobile will not allow those things to be deleted (hence my original question).

I would root it, then install a custom ROM. 3 weeks ago I had no idea what root was either, but with the step by step walk through, I was able to do it with no issues. The development section will help you with basically everything you are trying to do.

people are pretty smart but if you ask them to use something that sorta kinda works sometimes
well peoples behavior speaks for itself! and that is the answer to why people dont use it.

Why? In 30 seconds of searching, you could have found three threads related to what you want. Since you didn't, I went ahead and provided them here.

There are so many outdated posts, it's really difficult to know a good list from a bad one. One link you gave has a list from June with a handful of apps. Another link has a huge list that is for some kind of automated script that I don't understand. I'd just like a list of apps that can be frozen from Titanium Backup if I want to freeze them.

The list of apps in that script are safe to freeze and that is why they are included in the script. You don't have to use the script, just freeze the apps that have a strike through them on the list. I'm not sure how to make it easier for you, aside from creating a custom list for you and that doesn't really help anyone.

I didn't realize there were crossed-out apps in that list. Basically, I just think it would be great if there was a master list with everything that is safe to freeze. I'll use the apps on that script list with strike through for now.
