What are you guys' thoughts on the new 15 minute window for returning an app in the market?
Lets debate... good or bad? (and why...)
http://www.androidcentral.com/googl...rket-featues-refund-window-shrinks-15-minutes
Here's what I said on Twitter...
"I think the new 15 minute window in the Android Market is just going to lead to more piracy. 15 minutes is not enough time!"
Agreed. 15 minutes is a joke.
And schizo, just because you are a Dev, doesn't mean all your posts go in Development. ;-)

I meant to post this in General, hah. Someone can move this. I know it goes in general I just wasnt looking. My bad.
Not happy about it. It was always one of those things I used to tell smug iPhone owners that they could never have a good retort for. 15 minutes is not enough time for me to decide if I like an application or not most of the time.
In fact, today I purchased an application and it got stuck at the "Authorizing Purchase" screen for a couple hours, even through a few reboots of the phone. By the time it finally decided to install, it wouldn't allow me a refund. That pissed me off.

Good for devs bad for users... 15 minutes isnt really enough time to decide if I like an app or even see if its buggy

I agree, it's a shame that we'll have to pirate the app to test it... I'd say an hour is fair, 24 hours does infact hurt devs that make small games or something you would only really need to use once for an hour. Though with the current guidelines since you can't get a refund on the same app twice, buy, adb pull, refund, adb push. If you're satisfied with your purchase, go buy it again. Otherwise uninstall it
I honestly think Google should make it up to the dev to choose the refund period. Give the dev a drop down menu of time increments...
15 minutes
30 minutes
1 hour
2 hours
24 hours
Something like that.
I personally think the changes overall are good, I thought the 24-hour was kind of long to be honest the first time I heard of it, I personally don't try before I buy, but the only thing I would do is if that I accidentally purchased an app, 15 minutes is plenty enough time to get a refund.
I think they are trying to gear the refund more-so towards accidental purchases and also a quick way to gauge if the application is something you want, I think you should always put thought into something you are going to purchase and not just act on impulse, I think they are trying to work away from some of that mentality as well as make the Market more professional overall.
Just my $0.02
You do raise a few good points, though I'm thinking to the times I've purchased apps in the past, You have to hit at least 2 buttons, if not 3. Perhaps if one were not paying attention to the icons or titles names. I've always enjoyed the return period as I saw it of more of a pc game-esk approach, I always looked at this as a "demo" window. 15 minutes would not be enough time for me to test any system apps, ie: battery to see how effective they are.
Bad!!!!
24 hours gets rid of buyers remorse! Less refund arguements!

I posted this early in the updated market app thread.
would be more effective to debate here:

The potential problem I can see is that app developers may be less likely to provide ad-supported and demo versions, as they may consider the 15 minutes as a good enough trial period as a previous poster pointed out... But it would be their loss as far as my business is concerned, as I'm already more likely to go with the ad-supported version simply because I haven't come across an app yet that I need so badly that I would actually pay for it - if I feel it is warranted, I'll donate to the dev. But if they're asking for money up front, I'll just say no thanks and move on

Sounds like you've never downloaded a GPS app or system tools such as Tasker. You expect me to fully evaluate these types of apps in 15 minutes? You definitely need 24 hours for the GPS app simply because first you have to download the maps to your phone which can easily be over 1GB (1.5GB for Navigon) before you can even take the app out for a test drive.
Expect piracy and credit card chargebacks to rise.
I rarely return an app unless it really doesn't work. But due dilligence is getting easier on the market, and hopefully everyone checks the comments before making a purchase, or even updating. So, I'm fine with it. though, i wonder if this decision stems from the current android fragmentation, and incompatibilities resulting... And lots of ppl not reading the instructions. ..like every time u read a 1 star comment for a widget that says, "doesn't open!"
Sent from the future.
It would be nice if the window for returns was a scaling window. As in, the more expensive the app and/or bigger the download the more time the purchaser has to get a refund. Letting the developers chose would produce a system with 99% of apps with no (or at least the smallest allowable) return window. I wish they would allow paypal transactions before changing the return window.

15 mins is not enough time at all, should be an hour i think.
Could it possibly be done to implement a timer along with the refund time like you said shiz. Once the timer is complete then you could remove the files from the device

Totally agree with this. Some programs require a lot more time to test than others. A good example being Navigation. Leave it to the devs.

I haven't, nor have I personally seen for them (yet), but I think you can evaluate any well known application via other means. Just as with any other software, using the Internet as your resource, I'm sure you can come to a conclusion without even using the Application if it's something you'd be interested in.
Maybe it comes from the fact that I used to own an iPod Touch, where the App Store market is pretty much as soon as you buy it that's it, it's yours for good. I'm sure they'd make exceptions in some cases, as I'm sure would be the case in this situation, and I think we almost have it too good, yet people are still complaining. I'm not saying they don't have a right to complain, I just think it is being blown way out of proportion.
I know you can't entirely compare it to this, but I think of it this way. If you went to an electronics store, let's say Best Buy, and purchased a game (or any software for that matter) and tried it for 15 minutes then decided you didn't like it, you would get no refund for it at all. In fact the only thing you could do, is get it exchanged if the product itself was defective. That's not the point here though, I think of it as we are purchasing software, and we are lucky enough that we even have a refund option like this available, especially with how simple and easy it to quickly to backup the application and pirate software, yet people still seem to have issues with it.
You do make a very good point with your example though, and I in no way think you are wrong by it, I think for the majority of the Market as a whole, this shouldn't make too much of a difference. I know that there are always special cases to be made, but I don't think Google can cater to every single audience, instead try to cater to the majority and provide cool things for everything. I don't think they always make the right decision on some things, but in this case I simply see little to nothing wrong with it and welcome the changes with open arms.
Again this is just my opinion though, and I would just like to provide my $0.02 on the "issue" in question, since this is a debate thread after all. I am open to agreeing that it isn't a good idea, but so far I haven't seen anyone press a convincing enough case that it might become an issue enough to actually do more bad than good.
tl;dr Still think they made a good decision.
Thanks all.
Edit: Sorry for the wall of text, didn't realize how much I had typed until I posted. Didn't mean to get carried away or ramble on with some issues.

I've had the HD2 since November. This forum has been a revelation. But a few hours ago I lost the phone. It's gone for good. No insurance, no location software, unlocked, 16gb sd card. Adios amigo.
Perhaps not my finest hour. Sadly, I wasn't even drunk. Just fell out of my pocket in the taxi cab. It seems some people in Poland aren't that honest. I contacted the actual cab 20min later through the company but it wasn't there.
Anyway, I still consider myself a lucky guy. This was my first foray into the world of smartphones and through an almost free upgrade on t-mobile uk i got the phone for only 100gbp (+40 for the sd card). I bought a few apps and pirated quite a few more, so perhaps this is karma at work.
Writing this is somewhat therapeutic for me but the need to find a replacement is paramount so this also allows all you guys to share your wisdom, if you will..
No other phone matches the HD2 for screen size. It's pure luxury - ok its not AMOLED, but I've looked just now - and AMOLED is maxed at 3.7" - a significant downgrade.
The other issue is the pirating of software. I know it's wrong but I think we can all agree it's the most convenient way to test apps before buying.
However, WMP7S has left me somewhat unimpressed, I think Android is where it's at right now - development is on fire on that platform. Am I wrong? should I wait to see what happens on wm7 - i suspect that would take a year at least
So what are my options? Whichever phone I pick must be supported by XDA.... (I know I don't have many posts yet, but I chose my name for a reason... )
HTC Desire? HTC Bravo? Samsung Pico (Projector phone!!!) What's coming up?
I suspect this is the year of the smartphone and my academic year is almost up so I can perhaps hold off until the summer before buying. (Back to my w810 - still the toughest phone ever built imo)
Thanks for listening and hopefully replying.... time to roll...

I'm not proud but I'm not rich either - I'm trying to do Med School on the cheap and its not easy. If a simple google search gives me free software, only a fool would say no.
This has only been a brief visit to the Windows platform since Windows 7 came out. For 3 years prior to that I was using linux.
Virtually all the apps I use regularly,eg FPSECE, I paid for the supporter version. There's plenty of programs that don't survive more than 2 weeks.
I apologise to anyone who may feel insulted. My intent is not to steal, but to get value for money.

You can Google a lot of things. So you should steal them? No need to respond. Just wait 10 years when you have your own medical practice and you start getting people stiffing you on the bill. They probably found your location via Google.
Touche, and a fair point. I wont try to defend piracy with any real heart - I accept it's wrong even if the end justifies the means ('end' being good software, 'means' being fracturing a few rules)
Thanks for the MyPhone tip - I've locked the phone at least.

Hey guys I'm thinking about quitting smoking and my biggest issue with quitting is I've been smoking too long to go cold turkey (10 years) and cutting back never works for me cause I can't keep track of how long its been since my last. So I figured there's gotta be a good app for this. Unfortunately they're almost all pay apps so I was wondering if anyone's been where I am and might give me a heads up on a good place to start.
On 125th day with a cigarette. Good luck.

I quit last October cold Turkey. Smoked for 12 years 2 packs a day. It can be done. Ten months strong. Just sayin
How about just a little Notepad or Sticky-note app? Kind of a longer way to do it maybe, but you could just type on the Notepad/Sticky-note when your last smoke was ?
I recommend "AK Notepad". It has a widget form that can be pinned right to a home screen, it even has reminder/alert functions.
Or maybe just some kind of counter/timer app? The default clock even has an included stopwatch and timer. Maybe you could figure out some way to use those?

As a former smoker of 14 years I say bull**** on the smoking too long to go cold turkey. Once you set your mind on not smoking all you have to do is not smoke, this isn't as easy as it would seem but it isn't as hard either. You need to change your life pattens or you will be stuck in the same smoking rut you are in now.
I like the one by Konrad Muller. I used it for a bit and decided I wasn't ready. I will be using it sooner rather than later, though.
Thanks for the replies guys. I was looking at these two:

http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.gamesoul.quitsm
I like the widget that shows you how long you've gone with out one, I think that would motivate me not give up.
Yup I quit cold turkey too after 6 years
If the app costs less that a pack or two, I'd venture to say that it's well worth the cost. Short term, it might seem like a waste but long term even 50 bucks is still less than cancer treatment (or any medical expense for that matter). Not to mention that health insurance is cheaper if you are a non-smoker. Just my two cents.
I'm wanting to quit, but I'm to stressed all the time because of work. I'm going the electronic route. I used to have the app on my g1 but it doesn't help the urge IMO. Good luck though try anything and everything you can as long as it works.

The stress stuff goes away after a few weeks.
I would suggest gum or those nicotine inhaler thingys that seem to have become rather popular as of late, to help with the withdraw issues.
Yeah I feel the ecig has really helped me. Be sure to get big batteries or a lot of them. Nothing worse than a craving and no battery left.

don't even bother quitting if you don't have your mind set on it, you have to get mad and want to stop. im been smoking for 16 years and i know i could stop if i want too, just not my time yet. an app isn't going to help you quit, there is no cutting down, you just stop and withdraw.

So I just realized today, whenever i first got my phone (i think its been 1 week or 2 now), one of the first things i opened was tmobile tv, i remember it saying something about 30 day free trial, I was wondering will it charge me after 30 days? If so, how do i cancel it?
This is an exceptionally good question. I haven't accepted their trial yet because I planned to wait to start until I had time to play with it. That said, I figured I'd look up the answer for you so I could post a good natured poke of "Google is your friend". Turns out Google doesn't know either and by now I'm seriously questioning if TMOB knows!
I found 4 artiicals on TMO News that were almost completely content free, so much for truth in naming. I did find a reference that the new win-7 abomination will have free tv. Seems if anyone would pay for TV people stupid enough to buy win-7 would be the ones. Still that may imply MT4G will be free as well. Of course that begs the question exactly what is it a trial of.
By this time I was fairly obsessed and checked my account. According to TMOB the only upgrade they are currently dangling is the caller tunes thing. IMO this is just about the only thing you can do with a phone that is more annoying than RING-RING. But I suppose some people like it.
My several years old opinion of cellco tv service is that it compares very poorly to just about any other form of video consumption available. Of course that was Sprint and they compare very unfavorably to just about everything. So, maybe things are different, but until I see it I remain skeptical.
So ultimately I am unable to answer your question. Might be time to just call and ask them. But where's the fun in that?!
When you open the tmobile tv app it pops up a message stating how many days you have left on your trial. Just go into the help, subscriptions, and unsubscribe. Simple as that. I just did that last night.

I dont have an EVO, but I saw this on CL
http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/mob/2241065529.html
If your reading this then you must have an EVO. And if you do you already know the battery life is the worst!!! I dies in about 4 or 5 hrs without even using it. Yea mine did that too.....at first.
First you have to root your phone. If your not rooted i can do that too. For extra of course! Then once i drop my addition on your phone you'll have a battery that lasts all day. You think im joking right? Look at the pictures.
**The first pic is of the screen i root your phone on!!**
**The second picture shows at the top when i last plugged my phone in....YES that DOES say over 16 HOURS since i last charged my phone!!! Dont believe me I'll show you on my own phone!!!
**The third is of the wifi screen your gonna use...you can use the internet off your phone on a laptop, ipad or whatever....
**The fourth pic is of me deleting the crap sprint apps wasting memory on my phone!!
....And yes i can make it happen on yours!! By the way I've got many more tricks i can show you if your interested...changing ROMs/operating systems & the whole 9 yards!!
Ok here's a quick off the top of my head list of things I can do. Hopefully I don't forget anything.
1. Root the phone. <<--You cant do anything w/o this $15
2. Do a full Nand unlock. You cant do wifi unless the security/ NAND is unlocked. <<--$5
3. WiFi tether. Can make the phone a hotspot so you dont have to pay sprint for it. Sprint charges $10 a month. <<-- Hit me with $10 and its yours. Dont pay sprint $10 a month
4. Change the way the phone looks. Colors, functions, home screens...everything
5. Change to the ROM of your choice. Like different operating systems. <<--#4 & #5 go together im flexible on this. Make me an offer
6. Change the kernel. Improve performance & battery functions. <<--$10 this is what makes your battery last wayyyyyy longer
7. Set processor speed. Overclock = make it faster. Underclock = slow things down...better battery life. <<--You either get #6 or #7 not both.
8. Backup all your contacts & apps forever & delete sprint apps <--$5 this is easy
9. Backup your entire system forever. <<--$5 this is easy
10. Show you how to get paid apps for free. <<--$5
I can also do any new android phone. Tmobile mytouch 4g's, Samsung EPIC's, Droid's and a bunch more....
I know I'm forgetting something. Email me when your ready. It goes straight to my phone. I'll answer immediately.
Damn lmao what a joke.. ...

Wow what a rip off.

Yea, I can't say I haven't thought of making an ad myself. If people are to lazy to Google something or feel like this is too hard, why not make a few dollars off of them?
I don't see anything wrong. He's just charging for labor and believe it or not but some people don't want to learn how to do it themselves. You have people who go to car washes in the summer because they are too lazy to do it themselves. You have fast food joints for people too lazy to fix themselves a meal.
That's life. The point I'm trying to make is people don't have time.
last summer i made thousands under the table rooting/unlocking phones for $30 a pop.

nope, i had a no refund policy, even if their phone bricked.
I'm too lazy to do an ad. I thought about it but don't want to have to deal with the people complaining. The best thing if you are going to do it is to meet them somewhere and fix it instead of having them come over your place (retarded idea).
I do this myself... I've made over $100 on a 2-3 span of doing this. My ad is old now and expired, haven't started a new one. Old customers still refer people to me though
I see nothing wrong with this at all, and have been contemplating putting an ad up as a matter of fact. I'm out of work for a few months due to medical reasons, and could definitely use a little extra cash. I'd root evo's all day long for 25 to 30 bucks each. If someone wants their phone rooted for things like tethering and what not, but doesn't have the know-how or the interest in learning, but is willing to spend a little cash to have it done, I see nothing wrong with that at all. They would likely be the one's searching craigslist for something specific like that, which obviously means they are willing to pay for it. I think this thread motivated me even more to do it. I have all the time in the world these days.
Yea I kind dont see it being wrong, you're spending and effort = money. Otherwise the EVO owner would not know about it.
Maybe its just me but im not as impressed with my Atrix as i thought i would be. Before this i had a Nexus one and it seemed like it was much faster than the Atrix it just seems like its always lagging a little bit, i can really tell it when i unlock it because it will randomly stop before im done swiping my code. (if that makes since, hard to explain) I would use the Finger Print scanner but that took about 6 times to finally unlock the phone. Last but not least the flash light on the back. I use to use it all the time but now it doesn't work half the time. It will start flashing and dim untill it finally goes dead and doesnt work. It has like a yellow tint to it to. (not sure if that's normal)
Also the dock was a waist of 80$ Its not worth but maybe 10$ I cant even sync the phone up to the computer in it.
I am pretty much in love with mine... No lag, no random restarts, no troubles from the flash, zero problems. I am rooted and using GingerBlur 4.5 ATM. Maybe try modding it some.
i think we need a separate sub-forum for unhappy users. that way I dont have to read them
I think the Atrix is GREAT. I have owned it for a few months and at the same time bought and returned the HTC Inspire, SGS2 and the HTC Sensation. It beat them ALL IMHO. especially in battery life, sound quality and loudness, and general ability to run anything I install without a hitch. It is fast but not over-tuned (and lacking torque when it matters). For example, I play a lot of video and onyl the Atrix plays everything without a stutter. OK its camera isnt as good as SGS2, but its good enough. I like its screen the most of all the devices (its the birghtest, especially whites). Its the only device I feel I can rely on for an entire day without being near a battery charger.

Also the dock was a waist of 80$ Its not worth but maybe 10$ I cant even sync the phone up to the computer in it.

..And the towers are too far apart and it doesn't play the song I want and one of the guys at the att store smells funny. Also Im on XDA but I'm not too sure how to search or ask questions so I guess I will rant.
As has bene documented countless times in this forum, the hardware is being suffocated by the software. That's why everyone anxiously awaits the bypassing of the bootloader, loading custom kernels and ROMs, and why many people are pressuring Motorola to set their phone free. Motorola promises late 2011, but some people have different timelines to take matters into their own hands.
No, mine is fast and has no lag.
Getting faster the more crap I put on it.

Exactly what goes through my mind when I see responses like that.
I'm in the same boat as you Sanbourne. Been having a lot of problems with my Atrix and I'm just about ready to get rid of it
I have used many phones, and I mean MANY. The atrix is the only phone that has finally made me say, wow. I don't see the problems your having and maybe the fact that its an assembly line phone you might need to replace it. I run 3d graphics without a hitch. Screen scrolling and unlocking is smooth as butter. Not to mention call quality, speaker, display, etc... It is by far a beast of a device. I have packed almost 40gb of info into this thing, have over 80 apps, including games, productivity and more. I am probably at any given time running 15 or more processes in the background and still, it takes it with no problem. These are phones here, and in a world where we rely less on what they do and more on how they do it and how they look we seem to forget that nothing comes close to what this phone has achieved in a power user standpoint. Keep that all in mind when you think the atrix isn't that great or impressive. Its your personal workhorse, its not a "pretty" phone or a "wow look at that phone!" its a, "nope, leave the laptop, I have everything I need right here"
I'm so tired of people *****ing about there phone. If I don't like it take it back. I love mine....fast as hell....tons of features..

You didn't ask any questions, there is not one single question mark in your whole post. You only posted to complain. This is a public forum if you dont want to hear my reply then you should post in a private forum. Instead you want me to read your lame ass post and copy/paste the information here for you so you dont have to do any work finding the answers yourself? YOU are the troll.

Same here and with Citrix Xen Desktop and the lapdock I can run a Windows XP session and use Excel/Word and all my other office software....
I don't understand about the flashlight...although I have read that some apps can burn out the led on a phone. Maybe you should take it in under warranty.
On the keypad..there is a delay if you are in the process of rebooting your phone. Otherwise entering the code is instantaneous. Fingerprint reader may take me two times..
Ive owned a moto backflip and htc aria before getting this phone and in my opinion, it feels like a better version of the motorola backflip

I'm pretty sure you're the troll. If you don't like the content of the thread (or can already tell you won't by reading the title), exercise some god damn willpower and DON'T REPLY. You're wasting everyone's time.
I came from a Vodafone UK Iphone 4 and got back to the states...I picked up the atrix after a BUNCH of research. I am really happy with it. So much I really havent even paid attention to upcoming phones.(thats how I gauge how much i really like a phone). it is kinda like being happy with your woman enough not to notice all the others out there.
The other thing to keep in mind is the version of Android isnt even supporting ALL that this phone can do. So it really is future proof for a while. Gingerblur has made things smooth as can possibly be also.
give it some time bro
OP, I disagree with you. I recently baught a nexus one for my wife, $270 brand new. Although I love its build quality, my Atrix is MUCH faster (with Go launcher EX). And yes, even the Nexus one with its 1 Ghz CPU lags after a day of use.

Exactly what I think about the atrix.
I love it.
Great post skillz. +1
Will agree with OP... It's nice but nothing takes advantage of the dual cores it seems.
Live Wallpaper is laggy (with launcher pro or motoblur), the screen takes forever to turn on, it seems every other previous flagship device is getting updates (It's pissing me off!)...
Next time I'm definitely going with HTC, if I can't find a good HTC I'll opt for samsung, but never again for Motorola. Or AT&T for that fact.
