DI18 - EC05 Update - Stock App Restore Procedure for Rooted Phones

So I received the OTA Update for my Samsung EPIC 4G stock build Eclair DI18.
Unfortunately it did not install due to missing packages.
I was rooted.
I was not running any custom roms,
I did use the SDX Stock App Remover to remove "nascar",
I have seen other people having problems because they are missing the "Asphalt Demo" apk.
Unfortunately if you remove Nascar or Asphalt you will get that error message when you try to install the OTA EC05 update, as well as if you try the manual method of upgrading by copying the update.zip. This happens because the installer is trying to verify packages for the upgrade (which you no longer have).
I went nuts considering all the different methods I could take to apply this update. I wanted the quickest and easiest method, and one that would leave my data intact.
So if this matches your situation, you don't have to reflash back to stock DI18 to recover a couple of missing stock apps and you don't need Odin or the 255 mb tar ROM that's out there (SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar.md5) etc. with this method.
So here is the method I used to restore my Stock Sprint apps so I could get the installer to run.
Before you start, make sure you know which packages you need to restore back to your /system/app folder. (unfortunately, their is no way of knowing which package(s) you're missing if you don't remember what you removed. You could cross reference what you have with someone who has all the stock apps OR the easiest way is to try to apply the update and write down or remember which apk it is complaining about. Chances are you already know which APK you're missing and that's why you're here. If you removed multiple stock apps, then you might have already guessed that you are going to have to restore each apk one by one, and so you may need to go through this process more than once to discover exactly which apk files are missing.)
These instructions also assume that you've already copied the DI18-EC05 update.zip file found in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005593 to your sdcard.
Download the stock Sprint apk packages from:

The file you are looking for that is linked from that thread is:
http://www.nubecoder.com/files/andro...store_EB13.zip (Even though these are EB13 app's it doesn't matter that you're on DI18, we just need the file to be there so we can trick the installer into running.)
Unzip this file and copy the apk's you need to your sdcard by first mounting your android phone in mass storage mode (usb debugging disabled). After you have copied the apk's to your sdcard, you will need to remount your system folder and copy the apks to that /system/apps location for the update installer to recognize it (simply installing the app to your phone won't cut it).
To continue you will need the Samsung drivers ( I am not providing links because this can be found anywhere on the web. My particular Samsung driver archive is called "usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64.zip" (reboot your system after installing if necessary).
You will also need the "one click root" zip archive (or any other package that can give you access to the adb shell.) I used the adb shell from the "epic aio one click root" file archive "epic.aio.v1.13.zip".
Enable USB Debugging mode in your phone, and then plug your phone into usb.
Follow the instructions below to remount your /system partition as rw so that you can copy back (to /system/app) the missing apk packages that you've already copied to your sdcard.
Navigate to the location where your adb executable is installed:
1. cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools> adb shell
2. $ su
3. # mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
4. # cd /system/app
5. # ls (make sure it is mounted)
6. # cd /sdcard
7. # ls *.apk (show the apk package filenames)
8. # cp "apkfilename" /system/app (copy from current working directory [/sdcard] to /system/apps)
On step 8, replace "apkfilename" with apk's you want to copy. Repeat process as many times as necessary to copy back all the default apk's that you removed.

After you have copied all of your stock apk's back, simply unplug your phone, and reboot. Once you have rebooted press and hold volume down, power and camera buttons until the recovery menu pops back up, then simply select install update.zip
This time the installer will not error out on missing packages.

For those who only need the stock epic asphalt demo here it is.
(Note to mods, this is a 5 minute demo only, not a full game. As such I believe it is ok to post.)

I was looking inside the run.bat file and I used a run.bat file that did not remove asphalt5.apk and freeHDGamesDemo.apk.
Now I don't know if you need the freeHDGamesDemo.apk or where to find it.
I was going to reinstall the asphalt5.apk, but do I erase the /sdcard/gameloft/ folder and if I do will it be recreated again or should I leave it in?

You can get rid of the gameloft folder on sdcard, thats where it puts the file it downloads when you launch the asphalt demo and it prompts to download. Be careful though, if you have other gameloft games they will also use that folder.
I'm not sure on the free hd demo file, if the ota complains about it we should be able to pull it from the eb13 tar file. If it's not posted by time the ota rolls out I'll add it here for ease.

Thanks, I am not a big game player so the little asphalt5 demo is about all I need - I never even opened the freeHDDemo file so I don't know what it does, I was only looking for it incase it stopped you from getting any minor updates via OTA's.
I didn't think the Odin EC05 no data loss upgrade version would remove those two apps on Androidcentral.

i did everything but when i went to the system menu to intall the update.zip i dont have that file...
where do i get it from?

[Q] U8800 2.3 owerseas remove stock apk

Since I cant post in development section I will ask here if someone can help me. I have U8800 with 2.3 stock rom and I cant remove stock apps (swype in my case).I am rooted with DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT and SU is instaled. I did find apk file (/cust/hw/default/apk) but I am not able to remove it. I tried with titanium backup, root explorer, terminal emulator (cant find target) and with super manager.It seems like I am half rooted as root explorer cant mount rw in cust directory but works in system directory.Any idea is welcome,thank you!

You need to do it manually via adb shell. First to mount the partition as rw and then to remove it. I want to remove this file too, so I' ll try it asap.

I tried but this partition which is on /dev/block/loop0 cannot be mounted rw, I get a permission denied error.

In pinkscreen mode delete cust.image file,then delete apps with titanium backup.

We want to delete only some apps.
With your way we loose all huawei' s custom configuration, it' s like we don' t install step3.
This is not a solution.

I hope that we can find solution for this as I want to instal costum swype with my language enabled (slovenian) and can not do it untill I remove stock one. If any of you can post in development section maybe you can ask there if they know the solution for this, thank you!

I fixed it.
I deleted all unneeded apks (stock apps) that stored in cust.img
My method;
1. On Slitaz Linux 3.0
2. Open terminal
3. Copy cust.img from phone to /home folder
4. mkdir tmp
5. mount cust.img /home/tmp
6. cd /home/tmp/hw/default/app
7. Delete apk files what you don't want
8. unmount tmp
9. Copy cust.img from /home folder to phone

Ok, but I dont have linux or terminal on my computer. Is there any way to do this via terminal emulator on the phone? Or is there some step by step guide how to do it as I am not really familiar with terminal or its use.

1. Download this rar archive and open it.
2. Start your phone in pink screen mode
3. Backup original cust.img to your computer
4. Copy "cleared" cust.img from rar to phone.

Thank you,I managed to install swype in my language and it works great. I was wondering if there is any chance to extract all factory .apk files and post them somewere so people could donload them and install them if they want. I am missing that weather clock widget but swype is far more important to me, so thank you again to make it possible.

Ok, so I managed to get my fire rooted again after the 6.2 update with little to no problems. However, my gmail, market, etc is still broken. I've tried reinstalling the apks to no avail. It won't even install the google framework at all. I have ESFile Explorer & just gave it root access, but that's not helping me too much, since I don't know what I'm doing. If someone has some steps to try, I'm up for it.

1. Mount /system as rw
2. Copy the google framework.apk to /system/apps
3. Set permissions to rw- r-- r--
4. Install the google framework.apk (This is how I was able to keep my gapps functiong after the update. I think this will install it under /data/apps. You don't have to install since anything in /system/app runs a boot, but it will probably help in avoiding to have to re-do this after every update.)
5. Reboot
6. Follow the regular install steps for the .apks you want to add.
7. Make sure /system is read only when you're done.
These are pretty much just a reprint of the steps from this thread. So I would take a look at it.
I don't use ESFile Explorer so I can't help you with specific actions, just the general ones. Sorry!

I did everything, using root access on ES File Explorer. No dice. All the APKs are in the system/app folder. The still refuse to install. I still get "application did not install" on all of them.

Change the permissions on the apps in /system/app as he said above. Reboot. Done.

I don't have any options to change permissions, but they are the same as all the other apps in the folder.

[Q] Why can I not delete my /sdcard/clockworkmod folder?

So I've installed a custom ClockworkMod recovery and ROM on my Nexus 7 tablet. Life was good. Recently, I was running out of space and decided to delete my CWM backup (after saving it to my computer). And then, I realized I couldn't.
I went into ES File Explorer to try. I couldn't do it there.
I went into the ADB shell as root to try to remove it. No luck again, just the message when I finally DID try to remove one file:

What am I doing wrong?
Edit: This looks like it's ClockWorkMod (5.8.??)'s fault, but besides reading that another backup won't make the current one much larger, I don't actually know how to delete the current one.

Try "rm -rf ddd" (where "ddd" is the directory name) on the directory containing the files.

in the development section there is a cwm flashable.zip that will delete them.. Then upgrade to latest cwm or TWRP.. its a bug from older version of cwm.. its talked about in the dev cwm thread..

I did this in a way not mentioned here that still deserves mentioning... First I updated to the latest version of CWM available (via the Nexus 7 Toolkit) and then booted into recovery, opened the backup option, deleted the backup that was there, then cleaned the nandroids.
I could not find the aforementioned flashable zip, and because of the new CWM I had, I wanted to attempt a proper method of removal before running another rm command via the terminal. Therefore I could not verify the other methods mentioned here, my apologies.

Sorry for re-opening an old thread, but I am having a problem where I have files that I cannot delete from the clockworkmods/blobs folder on my external sd card. So far, I have tried deleting them from a file explorer, deleting them as root from a file explorer, root and non-root deletes from terminal emulator, deleting through windows, adb shell deletes (with system booted).
I also wanted to try adb shell while booted into cwm, but I could not get the adb connection to work from recovery.
I also tried to find the zip file in the developer section and that's the real reason why I revived this thread...Does anyone know where the thread is with the zip file to remove these files?

I think the only way to delete them is through cwm.Boot to recovery and use the menu to delete them.

When I booted to recovery, I am able to delete each of the backups that I created. These all deleted correctly. I then went to Free unused backup files (to delete the files/folders in the blobs folder) and ran that and most of the files are gone. When I boot back into the phone, there are still some files/folders there and they seem to be taking up about 4-5 GB on the card. When I try to delete them through the file manager apps (either as root or not) they will not delete and the manager reports an error (before clicking delete, the manager displays a statistics report that says that the size of the files are over 2TB so obviously something is very messed up about them). I have also tried to delete them through the terminal (again as root and regular user) and they will not delete there either and they totally mess up the terminal window with unprintable characters (the only way to recover is to exit out of the current window and start a new one).
I finally fixed this problem last night by backing up all of my stuff (except the clockworkmod folder) to my computer. I then rebooted into recovery (latest version of CWM non-touch) and formatting the ext SD Card. When I rebooted there were still some folders there (including the clockworkmod folder). I did a format from within the OS and that cleared everything out. I copied all of my stuff back from my computer and I'm now good to go. Not sure how it got messed up to begin with, but the problem is fixed now. I think I'm going to stick with TWRP from now on.

I've problems installing CM11 and a user recommended me this but i dont know how to intall it :/ help?

Download the recovery
Save it to wherever you want.
Make sure the image name is recovery.img, rename if needed.
Download any root file manager, which can mount and show hidden folders.
Mount /.cust_backup as rw.
Copy and replace recovery.img from SD card to /.cust_backup/image/recovery.img

there's no /.cust_backup on my phone :/ do you know any other way to install google apps without flashing it?

Do you have a /cust folder? If yes that's the same as /.cust_backup.
