(Q) Calls on USA gt with no minutes?

I have been reading many posts on flashing roms and such to USA galaxy tablets that allow them to make calls. Ok, I understand that. What I want to know is how that all works out since no US plans have call minutes for our tablets. I am looking for specifics. Is this VOIP? or what? Second, Why only 2G if this mod is made?

For GSM tabs, you need to use a sim with voice and data.

Its VOIP. At least the ones I've seen. Made over wifi. Since there is no calling plan with minutes tied to the Tab it can't be a typical voice call. Sipdroid from the market with Google Voice accomplished this as well and is very easy to set up without root (I'm pretty sure). Just set up GV. Download sipdroid and before entering anything click on the bottom tab that says create with GV account. It will ask password and to create a pbx account and ow right in that screen. Then its done.
Its funny but if you try to select the dialer it says calls can't be made with Samsung Galaxy Tab. But if you select the box for a number the keyboard dialer pops up and allows you to type a number! Works great.
I just tried it over 3g with wifi off and works as well. Just select allow voice over 3g in your account tab.
This was showed to me and there is a thread on droidx forums
I realize this isn't 100% relevant to your thread, just thought I would point you to it if you were wanting to make calls on tab.

All the provider cares about is the Sim card. So all you need is a sim with what you want, and then change/disable the IMEI of your tab.

I was able to set this up bit when I call my goog voice # from my wife's phone it still only rings my dumbphone. Do I need to add my tab number to Google voice somehow?

Go to your Google account and select the voice icon. Settings in top right. Voice setting. Then at bottom select add another phone. I was able to add it, but cannot get it to verify. So I'm not sure if it can receive calls, just make.
And to the poster about the SIM card, I'm on VZW, no sim card or slot.

For SIPDroid, does it do that annoying thing where it asks the receiving person to accept the call ? Or is it just like regular calling?
Does it do that call back thing?

If you install firmware that allows phone calls it works no different than any other Android phone. Pull the SIM out of your Android phone and insert into the Tab and viola you have a 7" Android phone that can make calls and browse the web. The easiest way to think about it is that the Tab is a big Android phone, the carrier's don't know any difference because it's running the same O/S as Samsung's Android phones.

[Q] Someone give me a definative answer please

I keep seeing posts from various users here, as well as all over the internet, about how easy it is to get SMS up and going through WiFi and they describe various ways of accomplishing it, but none of them ever work for me. Can someone/anyone tell me once in for all rather its possible, and please describe (in detail if you please), how to do it?
Question: If I, or anyone else, was to decide to just wait for the WiFi ONLY Tabs to come out for this very purpose (texting via wifi), would we be wasting our time? I mean IF its not possible via wifi on the wifi/3G Tab, then we shouldnt expect it to work on the wifi ONLY Tab either right? Thanks in advance.

It is possible (and quite easy) to get SMS working over WiFi. If you have a google voice account, you can download the google voice app and use that to text people (or you can use other apps like textplus). That is the current setup that I have since I have no texting plan on my line.

Thanks for the reply. Google voice was one of those ways that I had read about already and for me it was not easy at all, and I could never get it to work. The last thing I read about setting that up was using le your home # for the Tab since it is not used for texting purposes...well, it didnt work for me. Maybe you could explain exactly how you set it up?
That app you mentioned I, I tried that a while back and my son told me he was flooded with advertisements...etc, so I dumped it.

Can't someone else give me some help here? This is driving me nuts. Why would using Google work for one and not for others? What could I be missing/doing that's possibly screwing it up?

Thanks for the reply. I've already set up google voice but cannot get it to function properly. That's what I meant when I said in my previous post "Why would it work for one but not others, what could I be missing/doing wrong to screw it up". I have followed all of the instructions on google website, I've put in the # to be used for my device, google has verified it, I've downloaded the app for my SG Tab, but it will NOT WORK. Perhaps you could explain in detail how exactly you set it up? I really don't know what else to do.

What am I to do after this point if....
I'm to this point (see attachment) and I'm trying to set everything up "for texting only" and what I've read is "use your home phone #" because it is not used for texting...etc. Well, when I get to the point of what the attachment shows, what the heck do I do? It doesn't seem like I would be able to use my voice phone line to do this, and I cannot use the SGT as I have no dialer??????

Have you tried opening google in the browser via your Tab and useing the provided dialer in google? I use it on my PC as my PC has no dialer either. I will try with my tab and edit this post if it works or not.

I know it's not quite the same, but you could try using "Whatsapp" from the market if all parties have either android or iOS devices.

I just tried your suggestion, well..I at least got on the tab and went to GV site, but then I noticed voice had been activated without me following through at that point shown in the attachment. Now I have another problem. When I sent a text to the tab from my Evo, my home phone rang and Sprint sent what's called a TTLL (Text to Land Line) call....so that's screwed up. I used my tab to try it the other way, but cannot see any way to even send a text, not online at the voice site and not on the tab with the voice app. So it looks like I'm still stuck at not being able to get this going. Really frustrating..

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a go, and if it works, I think I can afford 2 dollars a year. I might just do that, thanks again.
EDIT: This won't work because it has to verify a number for your phone. The tab doesn't have a number.

I have not used the setting "Forwad to Google Chat" and confirm that I'm able to send/receive text but I have my free phone number from IPKall and I'm able to send/receive text using GV account from the tab. Read the instruction in the Sprint VoIP call in Dev if you want to (find my post there).

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately this isnt working for me either. Im at the point of giving up now and just returning the damn Tab. I did all kinds of research on this prior to even buying the tab to at least try and make sure I could accomplish it. Most of what I found was "seemingly" possitive. Everyone makes it sound sooo damned easy to set it up and get it going, well its not, and I will go as far as saying that it isnt possible at all, for at least some, me being included in that latter bunch.

Sms was designed to be sent over cellular network and being associated with the phone number.
The number is also needed for GV. You might try Skype and get phone # and etc using it but its all far from comfortable. There are other services that might work as proxies for you but all cost some money.

Thanks for the reply. I guess then that all of those posts that I've seen here, as well as all over the net, was just "bull". I say this only because of your comment about SMS being designed for cellular network, and only because these posts I'm talking about specifically say they got things up and running and are successfully texting on their SG Tabs via WiFi/Google Voice.
I suppose then that I should just forget about waiting for that WiFi only Tab because SMS would not work on that device either. I wouldn't mind spending some money to get this going, although I don't think that I would want to get into a contract or anything like that and be stuck spending on a monthly basis, which I think all of the Wirelss companies like Sprint make you do (not sure).

For SMS and voice phone on my Tmobile Tab I use prepaid voice only Sim. The tab was flashed with Euro ROM and works very smooth and giving me ability to place voice calls and send SMS if needed. It costs me money but no monthly obligations.
BTW, I can send Sms using Sim card from my phone as well.

I guess I couldn't do anything like that correct? Is there a difference between T-Mobile and Sprint Tabs .... besides what may be the obvious, like I know Sprint is CDMA, not sure of T-Mobile. Anyway, do you think the same type of setup is possible with my Sprint device? If so, could you please describe how I would go about setting it up? [Q] Voicemail on Galaxy Tab without Google Voice?

I've rooted and installed MoDaCo on my T-Mobiile Galaxy Tablet, and have carrier unlocked it and am using it on AT&T. However, for the life of me I can't figure out how to get AT&T's voicemail working with the tablet, and those who call me are told my voicemail is not set up.
My Google voice number is already connected to a DIFFERENT mobile voice number, and I'd prefer just to use AT&T's voicemail until my contract is up and I switch to another carrier - however, I can't find information on how to do this and forum searches have only turned up messages saying "Use Google Voice," which doesn't actually help to solve my problem.
Can someone please point me in the right direction to figure this out? I'm reasonably tech-saavy but could really use a starting point.

EDIT: I should add that I'm new to dealing w/ Android and that if this is a stupid question, my apologies - I'm still working my way through how things work on the platform.

I dunno the local AT&T voicemail for where you're at but what happens when you dial your own number from teh tab? It should let you check your voicemail and/or set it up.

I managed to get AT&T to help me get through it. They had to reset my voicemail password (which I had already done) and I had to set the voice mailbox up again from scratch. They also asked for my IMEI number, but didn't flinch when I told them it was a Galaxy Tab - I was prepared to cancel my contract if necessary, which may have been the reason for their help as they'd be losing multiple voice & data accounts otherwise.

Forward calls and texts to Wifi tablet???

I would like to do this for free (or as cheap as possible).
When I go to the gym I bring my 10.1 Tab in with me and I watch Netflix while I work out. I hate carrying my phone in there PLUS my tab. Is there any possible way that you guys can think of where I can somehow forward my calls and text messages to my tab to come to me over the gym Wifi????
Would love to hear your thoughts.

There are three relatively popular solutions to your question.
[-] The first is SyncSMS, by d0lph1nK1ng. It syncs text messages, using a Dropbox account (you'll need to sign up for one, but it's free for the amount of space required for something like this). You don't need the phone in close proximity to the tablet, but a network connection is required on both devices. Push notifications are available, although as a 'beta' feature.
[-] The second is TexTab, by howettl. It uses Bluetooth to make the transfers, so no Dropbox-style file hosting service is required, however you need the phone to be in the tablet's Bluetooth range.
[-] The third option, which I use, is Google Voice. I prefer the integration (no relying on phone range, file sharing sites, or polling). I receive voicemail notifications and the ability to listen to them in the same inbox. I love the setup. A lot. Phone/tablet/chrome (on my docked laptop) are all notified within three seconds of each other when a new text is received. Google voice uses push notifications on all devices (incl. Chrome, although not technically a device), which has been awesome on my Tab 10.1 in my experience.
Polling is commonly used when push notifications aren't an available feature. This is when an app repeatedly checks every X amount of seconds/minutes/etc. for new messages, instead of being notified from the cloud/other device. Receiving a normal text on your phone is a push notification. It's pushed to your phone. Facebook checking for new friend requests every hour is polling.

Ferris upon has a new app called Verizon Messages that can allow you to sync text messages between your phone and tablet if they are connected too the same wifi network.

You would need to call forward your mobile phone to GrooveIP. This is backwards from what people normally do though(they forward calls from GV# to their phones). hehe

I love the Google voice idea for text messages but I'm assuming he wants to reply to his text messages from his phone carrier. He won't be able to do that with Google voice. He will have to use his Google voice number which is a pain.

Not correct, inbound calls to my Google voice number ring on my wifi tab when I'm signed into grooveIP. I don't forward the carrier assigned cell phone number.

Not if he has Sprint, which it looks like he does.
Google and Sprint have partnered to allow your Sprint mobile number to be your GV number. All texts I send from my 10.1 using GV come from my regular cell phone number. Super slick....

I use groove ip with a Google voice assigned nbr. Used to have the gv nbr forwarded to my phone (droidx). To get the nbr working for both inbound and outbound calls on this tab I had to send the nbr to Google chat. You have to do this in a full browser in your Google account options. Of course you need connection to a Wifi network.

When I desire, I would like to have my phone in my pocket / backpack etc, and be able to use my tablet as a phone. When somene calls my phone, I'd like it to "ring" my tablet. When some texts me, I'd like to see it on my tablet. Moreover, I'd like to be able to place calls from my tablet (using my phone number). (I know you can use google voice and skype, etc. but I want it to use my phone with my phone number and appear in my call log and my tmobile monthly bill).
1) Is this already possible? (If so, what is the software called.)
2) If this is not already possible, is it possible given the exposed APIs of android?

I use GrooveIP and Google Voice with my Sprint number.. SMS and phone work great on Tab and on my SGS2 Epic 4G Touch..

It's the perfect solution and good for some smiles also.
I was sitting on the couch using my laptop PC and a call came in on Google voice. It rang on my land line, it rang on my Galaxy Nexus phone, it rang on my Galaxy Tab and it also rang on my laptop via Gmail. All 4 places had a different ring tone. My wife and I just looked at each other and cracked up laughing.

Yes. I do this with Google Voice and Grove IP.
When someone calls my Google Voice number it rings in 6 places: 1) Personal Cell phone, 2) Galaxy Tab, 3) Laptop PC (via Gmail), 4) Home phone land line, 5) My office desk phone, 6) Office cell phone.
The only downside to this is that I people always know they can get me on the phone.
This also presumes that people call your Google Voice number instead of your cell phone number. It takes a while to train people but after a few months everybody will be using the Google Voice number. In fact, I have no idea what the phone number of my office cell phone is. I'd have to look in settings if someone needed to know.
If you're not using Google Voice do it now. It's a little effort but the payback is BIG.
Also, this makes for some very humorous scenarios. For example, I was in San Jose visiting my daughter. We were in a crowd and got separated. She called me using my Google Voice number. It rang on all of the devices listed above but before I could answer on my cell phone my wife picked up the land line at home which was 400 miles away. My daughter was confused, "Mom? How did I get you? I was calling dad." "Just call again and I won't pick up the phone," says my wife. My daughter called again and this time I answered.
Here's a HUGE benefit of Google Voice:
You can put people into groups. Then you can handle each group differently. For example you can make it so those in the "Office coworkers" group never get passed to your cell or home phone after 8pm. I have a group called Spam. When a I find out a number calling is a telemarketer I put that number into the Spam group. When someone in the Spam group calls me it is NEVER sent to any of my phones. It's my own personal "Do Not Call" list. Google Voice is very powerful.
More Google Voice benefits:
- When someone sends a text message you can have it forwarded to all cell phones and tablets and also your gmail account.
- When someone leaves a voicemail message it will be translated into text and then sent via text messaging. It can also be sent to your email. And, by the way, an attached voice file is included. When you play the voicemail back it highlights the text like a karaoke machine. Very cool.
- ALL Of your text messages and all of your voicemail are stored in you Google Voice mail account. You'll never lose a text or voicemail again. You can log into any browser and retrieve them. And, if you get a new phone all the old text messages immediately show up.

How do I set it up so it still rings on both the tab AND the computer? I assumed this would be the default setting but since installing GrooVe IP, calls only get forwarded to my tab and cell phone but not google chat on the computer anymore. I have to log out on my tab for calls to go to my computer. Any ideas on how I can change that?

I have to admit that I have no idea how it rings on my laptop or what setting it takes to make it ring. I do know it's a part of Gmail. I don't think I'd ever answer a call there. It surprised me at first I had to look around to figure out that the ringing was coming from my laptop.

There is actually an app in the market that does just this.... its called tablet talk and connects over Bluetooth or wifi. Its not free but worth every penny. You only need to purchase it once and install on both devices, it will sync your txt messages and allow you to send/receive on your tablet. The best thing about this app is that it will notify you of an incoming call from you phone right on your tablet From your contacts and allow you to mute the call or hang it up.
Go check it out... you will be glad you did.

It is called Table Talk. And you have to install it to your phone and tablet from the Market.
I can't believe you guys don't know this.

[Q] Sms with verizon number?

Hello, ive been searching but cant find a clear answer as to how to sms with tab 7.7 using my verizon number and sim i thougt h left this feature still in and only removed phone function? Am i missing something? I know theres sms apps but i wouod like to use my actual number.

Anyone? Some one pkease help i dont i its because my questions are stupid or not bit i seriously cant find a answer ive been searchin forever sites say it supports sms.

As far as i know, the application that allows you to send sms is called "Messaging"
And the one for call is "Phone".

Maybe you are looking for TextTab or TabletTalk. Both are in the market and will send/receive text from your tablet.

Its disabled.. Unless someone can hack it but i doubt that.. I dont see any developer for the Verizon 7.7
what i did is ported my current Verizon # to Google Voice which routes calls and text on the tablet to my new Verizon #.. so now my tablet is a full feature phone with unlimited fast LTE data
note: need to use Groove IP for calls... Its $4 but well worth it

Yeah i wanted to port my number but itll cancel my current contract and i have the unlimited data so i definately dont wanna do that. forwarding my verizon calls to my gv is great but i. Cant forward texts.. Thanks for the replies guys just gonna have to return it.
