difference between WCDMA and HSPA - Streak 5 General

hi all
Indian telecom operators are about to roll out 3g (i know it sucks when the world is already on 4g) and i have been told that 3g on WCDMA really sucks as compared to HSPA enabled handsets. Now in the settings menu, i can there is an option to select network mode which only gives GSM/WCDMA as an option.
my service provider (Airtel) tells me that WCDMA only handsets can only support speeds upto 384 kbps while HSPA handsets can support upto 7 mbps!! what will i get with the streak??

Dont worry dell streak run hspa

Hi is anyone having problems with o2 update. I cant seem to get 3g working on my streak and I know im in a 3g area because my other phones pick up 3g ?

No problems like that, a couple of apps seem to be playing up since the upgrade but I'm not sure that's the fault of the upgrade so much as the apps not liking later versions of Android or possibly the new EX version of ADW.

It was after my buddy got his vibrant unlocked in the Philippines that he didn't get to connect on Globe's 3g or even T-Mobile. I flashed his Vibrant last night with PepperKake om: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885404 and it finally got a 3g signal. Now just to wait for him to confirm when he get's back to the Philippines. He's leaving tonight...hehe! Update will be soon...
maybe it's just because of the modem? How did you know that the phone isn't getting 3g speed with globe?

what band does smart use? because the 3g band of globe is not compatible with.the 3g of vibrant. well that's what I have read.
What's the speed of 3g in smart?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Sorry, I'm not sure what band Smart is actually using.
But according to other forums, smart uses 2100.
I do get a 3G signal, there's a 3G icon displayed on my phone.
However, surfing is crap.
I'm not sure if its the SIM I'm using, coz it's prepaid (Smart Buddy).
I dont know if using a postpaid sim (Smart Gold) will improve anything.
Or it could probably be that the network is congested thats why everything is slow.
All I can say for sure is that I get a 3G signal.
Service Provider GSM Frequency Band 3G Standard 3G Frequency Band
Globe Telecom 900 MHz/1800 MHz W-CDMA (UMTS) 2100 MHz
Smart 900 MHz/1800 MHz W-CDMA (UMTS) 2100 MHz
Sun Cellular 1800 MHz
T-Mobile Vibrant should also get the globe 3g.

AT&T 850 MHz 3G

I've been searching around and I can't get a definite answer...
Can the vibrant pick up the AT&T 850 MHz 3G network? Is there any way to turn on this feature?

Yes. The 1900mhz I believe as well. Idk what you search but Google "Vibrant on at&t 3G"

I can get 3G in other areas, but not here, which leads me to believe it's just a 850 MHz band.
I can take out the SIM and put it in an iPhone and it picks up 3G just fine, whereas the vibrant is stuck on edge. It's frustrating to keep having to reboot the phone to pop out the SIM

Its got to be unlocked doesn't it to work on att 3g network don't it?
Here we go again...
Here we go again. If you are referring to the T-Mobile USA Vibrant, it does not have support for 850Mhz UMTS bands. Period. The FCC says so. That is pretty definitive as far as I am concerned. It does not matter what some piece of software shows you. The hardware is not capable as it sits in the T-Mobile USA Vibrant. Search the FCC database for the Vibrant. GSM 850Mhz ≠ UMTS 850Mhz.
Pretty sure it's just 1900MHz. The FCC documents would have included the 850MHz band if it was really there.
Edit: Lol, yeah what he said.

Thanks for clearing it up now comes the dilemma of deciding whether to use the vibrant or an iPhone that uses the 3G speeds...
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Tmobile Vibrant does have capability to operate on ATT 3G network.
I could get it working with iphone sim card.
Specification also includes ATT frequencies.
Att is using two frequencies for 3G.
If it don't run on 3g then why does my vibrant have a 3g data icon and is blazing fast on it?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
It runs on 3G in areas where AT&T uses 1900MHz for 3G. It runs on Edge in areas where AT&T only uses 850MHz for 3G.

Precisely.
The Vibrant does not have 850mhz 3g support. Only AWS(1700)/PCS(1900)/IMT(2100) 3g support.
Wow...just wow. Seriously, the FCC does not generally lie about things like this. And no, I don't think it is a big conspiracy in this case...lol

I'm not sure what this is about. Maybe it's just wishful thinking run amok...seems like most of these people either want to switch to AT&T or bought the phone intending to use it on AT&T, have since found out that it won't work in their area, and are refusing to ultimately admit to themselves that it won't work.
People like to think to themselves, "Well, maybe the FCC screwed up and I DO have a pentaband (or quadband?) 3G phone." The slightest bit of uncertainty encourages such thoughts...there are threads with jokers enabling the fake 850MHz menu selection and exclaiming, "OMG, I have AT&T 3G on 850MHz" when they already had it on 1900MHz. People who bother googling the question ahead of time will no doubt find some older, confusing threads.(Albeit they will hopefully find more and more threads with people like us saying "No, it's not in the FCC docs," etc.)
We should have a sticky or something about this lol.
Yes, I googled it and found conflicting reports which is why I came here to clear it up.
Thanks again

Maybe. If it works on 1700Mhz and can use HSPA+ it will be able to do 3G. If it only gets 1900Mhz with GSM then it can do Edge.

They are working nationwide on putting 3g not just on their 1700/2100 classic 3g frequencies but the more standard 1900 MHz since their Edge uses that frequency.

I'm getting HSPA in Manhattan now after going into service mode to select only the 1700 and 21000 WCDMA bands, and then setting Network Mode to "WCDMA Only" in the "Wireless and Networks" menu in Settings. It still seems to hop between H and 3 quite frequently.
[EDIT]
I get the same issue of getting kicked off of T-Mobile under this setup. When I set Network Mode to "GSM/WCDMA (auto)", I stay on T-Mobile but don't get HSPA or 3G and it seems to revert to 850 band and Edge only.
