what is this symbol on the space bar? - Epic 4G General

on the right hand side, it looks kinda like a speaker with a little two way arrow intersecting the right most line.. it doesn't do anything with shift or the fn key but make more spaces...

Turns speakerphone on and off during a call.

For some reason, pressing mine from the home screen opens google search. uh edit, it opens google search with any keypress on the physical keyboard... that ws supposed to be an edit anyway...
News flash for everyone but johnbarry3434.....johnbarry3434 was correct at least on my phone. with the keyboard open I made a call, and as it was ringing I held down the space bar - a long press - and the speaker came on. long pressing again turned it off.

Bottom touch button sensitivity

It seems the bottom buttons sometimes don't respond to touch. It takes a few taps to wake them up. Anyone else notice this?
yes i have, but mostly the home button... but once all of them are lit, the sensitivity goes up for some reason

No they do not. I wish they would stay on as long as the screen stays on. On the Samsung Fascinate for Verizon, they button DO stay on, so I believe this will or could come in a future update.
As for the sensitivity, I think they work great. I haven't used an N1, but on the N1 all the reviewers complained about the buttons, and with this phone, no reviewer has complained about the buttons so far, so I bet they are better. As for me, I have no complaints with them either.

Huh, I was gonna say mine are too sensitive, as I can hover over them and they go off without touching them. Then again, in the winter time static electricty always finds a way to knock my on my butt all the time. I should prolly stay indoors during lightning storms.
hopefully there is an update or tweak to keep these buttons powered on as long as the screen is on!

Volume down / Search

Has anyone else noticed the little magnifying glass right below the volume down button?
I could have read the manual, but i threw it out
I can't seem to find any other use out of the volume down button except for well... turning the volume down.
Can someone put an end to my curiosity ?

Placement of Home button

Is it just me or the placement of the home button really annoying? Logically it should be centered of the space below the screen and not so close to the bottom. I found this odd when I saw this during the announcement but didn't realise it will end up being ergonomically wrong.
I've developed wrist pains that I never had with the sgs2 due to the placement and the hardness of the home button. As I have to consciously reach for the home button lower than need to.
And to make matters worse the time I gotta hold it down for multitasking is a bit longer than needed in my opinion.
Except for this phone is perfect for me!
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I also am really irritated by the buttons and the placing of them.
They are far to far down, so I constantly touch them accidentally. As you say they should be nicely placed half way between the screen and the bottom of the phone.
And to be fair I would have preferred a capacitive button over that huge home button.
Ok, so I've only had the phone for 9 days now so maybe with a bit more time i will get used to this disfunctional design.
I would rather it a bit higher, always feels like I am on the verge of dropping it when using the phone one-handed, and I have big hands!
Not only you amigo!
I think the home button should be bigger - like it was on the S1.
Also the colour of it on "blue" is...more like purple.
Im fine with the home button. What i dont like is the back button on the right and not the left.

I can agree to some extent about malplaced buttons, I'd want them right up below the screen as before I got my soft-shell for the phone kept touching the back button with the palm of my hand while holding it. What I really like that I didn't like the least with the S2 is the rounded shape, it's so much nicer to hold than the S2. With CM9 it also became so much friendlier in terms of tweaks and hax. Me like!
My only complaint is the button placement should be higher. Yes it is a little long holding the home button for the multitask menu but it is not a problem for me
If I have assisted you, please press Thanks button.
I think the button looks good where it is
No problems
Looks good, but doesn't feel good when reaching for. Especially if you have a case
If I have assisted you, please press Thanks button.
The home button should've been bigger or placed a little bit shifted upwards, i always loved the site of the back button, as it's all the time used and since i use my right hand it's perfect for me.

If only HTC would place that power button on the side...

... they would have made way, way more profit
No seriously, HTC One, fantastic device, everything is amazing, but again that power button on the top. Why? :crying: :crying: :crying:
I'm seriously having a first world crisis here.
Most of the custom Roms here allow for the volume buttons to wake up the phone. It's saving my finger stretching so much.

Holy crap, seriously? So a simple button remap should work? Anyone any idea how the button map files should be modified to make this work.. (Long time out of the low level customization business )
I like the button placement on the top left. Last year on the One X is was on the right side... That was a bit hard to reach.
They included the IR Blaster in the Power Button. That could be a reason why its on the top.

It could be, but you'd have a landscape remote. Power button placement should take precedence over a gimmicky feature most people won't use. I don't speak for everyone, but even as a geeky person, I'd rather reach for the remote than pull my phone out of my pocket, unlock it, and launch a remote control app to do the same thing.

Seriously? I've been wishing they'd do this for years. It's a universal (programmable) remote too so I can do my TV, Stereo (which I actually use a lot) and Roku box. It's a great feature.
Plus, if I'm sitting down, especially on a couch, I usually have already pulled my phone out of my pocket.

I wonder if the issue is really just hypothetical, as in the people who object don't have their One yet. I guess I'm lucky cause I had a Nokia and an iPhone before this so I've had the button on the top for several years. I'm concerned too about how tall the phone is but I have a case already and it isn't a problem to shift the phone slightly to get my finger up there (I have small hands).
That, the battery and the MicroSD card are non issues for me, but then I might be in the minority too. I've never been more excited to own or impressed with the design of a phone. In fact it's a little embarrassing how hard it is to wait two weeks.

It was still on the top in the one x, just the right side of the top compared to the left now. (it's always been top right iirc for htc and iphones) minus maybe small exception. I think right top is better for right handers... But as htc knows... Most people are left handed... /sarcasm this must be why they chose the left side now.

Actually, top left is better for right-handers because it allows you to fully stretch your finger, rather than cramping it in an awkward position if it's on the top right. But personally, if there was no IR Blaster, I would prefer it on the right side of the phone because it's so much easier and more natural to hit it with your thumb, with the way you hold a phone.

Yeah, that depends I guess on individual. Having owned htc phones and an ipod, and being right handed I prefer it be on the right side... So probably more about hand size. I've tried to hit the top left of my current phone as if it was the htc one to see the comfort... Doesn't work for me

Is there a known workaround yet for enabling the volume buttons to wake up the device (don't want to flash a rom yet)?

Really? Okay great... Pretty long time ago that I have played with HTC devices. But anyway, this is the problem. I have root, can modify files in the system directory. But all those changes are undone when rebooting the devices, i.e. the changes are not permanent. Because the keymap files are loaded when booting the device there's really no way to change anything.
Anyone? Non permanent write access ?
