Broken wifi hotspot - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay so I remember reading somewhere that if you followed a certain tutorial to either root phone or get s-off. Can't remember which. But after you do it your wifi will be broken ie. hotspot will disconnect randomly. Well in that same tutorial they tell you how to fix it. I never bothered to fix it because I thought it was "connecting to a wifi" will be broken, not the actual hotspot (i never connect to a wifi) At first I just thought it was my phone acting up. But I think its cuz I never did the wifi fix. Can anyone tell me which post it was that tells you how to fix it? I did the s-off tutorial, then the ultimate s-off with CID, simunlock, root process iud that helps any. Any help is greatly appreciated.

My phone is rooted with s=off and my Wi-Fi works just fine. Doesn't disconnect. Hotspot/wi-fi calling works great.
Not sure why yours is having issues. I never did any Wi-Fi fix either.
Sounds like (not trying to offend here) that you aren't too familiar with how things work and sort of barreled into rooting your phone cuz maybe you thought it was/would be cool. Now you have things not working.
Rooting is/can be dangerous and lead to broken processes and bricked phones. That is why there are always disclosures with the guides. Rooting is a risk taken by us wanting to own our phones, but the guides are not for beginners (not implying that you are).
I suggest you unroot, flash back to stable and wait patiently.
AGAIN; no intention of insulting or hurting anyone's feelings.

Thanks but I'm very familiar with rooting. I know the risks and warnings. But since ur not having the same problem it could just be my phone. I could have read it in a different forum because I'm constantly reading forums in the vibrant, g2, droid, and evo. But everything else works perfectly just the wifi is spotty for me.

did you flash any of Gorilla's OC kernels? I know his earlier versions broke wi-fi

Rooted, S=Off, stock ROM, etc. and WiFi Hotspot is working just fine. Posting this reply while connected to it right now.

Well I use the stock app and T-Mobile says is free (for now). You could use other apps like Barnacle Wi-Fi Tether. You could also use the andorid-wifi-teather app http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/. I like the latter of the two the best.
If you don't use the stock tmo app, you should be fine... we won't know till Nov 14th tho...

ive seen a couple people saying they gotten wifi tether 2.0.5 to work fine (before permroot) but it doesnt seem to work for me (kernel does not support tethering)
How did you guys get it to work? correct me if im wrong but temproot/permroot shouldnt have anything to do with it cus its saying its the kernel... (unless this is the generic error message)
perm rooted, with s off, I just dl 2.0.5 pre13
Works fine...

Has anyone heard/figured out how TMo will be "stopping" tethering (update, account sync file, etc.)?
I will not accept an OTA (won't get one while rooted anyway) and have account sync turned off.

this ones a mystery so far... I just dont think tmo would announce the charge then make the change.... I would guess its already done (key word guess but who knows this change could of been made months ago... before the g2's release)
Anyone see a change yet or figure out how they are going to charge for tethering?

Issues with Wireless Tether

I am running MikShift with 1.8 kernal with Cyan Dragon Theme.
The wireless tether works just fine with the 4g, but it doesn't work with the 3g, are there any threads or a fix or anything info on this?
I'm also having problems with this. I have thread a few post down but unfortunately we haven't found a solution.
Sent from my Evolution
The only problem I'm having is that devices connected to my phone via Wireless Tether get a LOT LESS speed than my phone will. Full 4G signal on my phone ~5Megs while a connected device will be pulling about 500K.

The 4G works just fine for me, I just can't get the 3G to work.
I'm having this exact same problem. I haven't been able to figurre anything out either. One this I've noticed is that if I switch to a different app, the tether will stop working until I go back to the wireless tether app itself and then the data will start to flow again.

Well it looks like newkidd might of found out the tether issue..../system/bi/sh is symlinked to bash....
he is working on a fix...but i was helping test and can say fixing the symlink and tether worked perfectly....on 3g...although i know i didn't do this fix Friday when we toyed with it so who knows what the deal was....
The hack apparently takes a lot of work to change from EVO to ours....not sure what dev is going to be able to port it....

Guys, I submitted an issue on their google code page, feel free to go comment and knock this thing up to a hot issue so they will look into it. lol
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=878
OK I'm glad to see others are having this issue.
Prior to yesterday, I was only able to tether on 4G using Wired Tether OR Wireless Tether. As of yesterday, I can no longer tether AT ALL.
I've tried flashing back to the completely stock ROM (only had root mod) that preludedrew posted and I'm still experiencing this issue. The only other thing I could possibly do is RUU and then re-root.
Has anyone found a solution to this? Is this a sprint issue or individual phone? Are some people not affected at all? I have been using the stock ROM, rooted and with bcnice's 1.8 GHz kernel since root.
I use my phone as my primary internet so this is a HUGE detriment for me and also a GARGANTUAN downside for the phone. I'm wondering if Sprint is finding a way to outsmart us...
EDIT: Azilink appears to still be working fine for tethering. Although it does take a bit more of a setup and some familiarity (marginal) with adb, it also typically performs much better as well. Brandock made a post about it in the apps forum, a search should pull it up fairly quickly.
Well with stock root wireless tether wasw working fine once I switched roms it stopped working so you do the math

My 4G tethering came back oddly enough. Maybe it was my area.

Mine is back working now too...that's really weird.
NYC here.
Guess I wasted my whole day yesterday trying to figure this crap out =(
This is an issue with the ROMs not the app or anything. The symlin for /system/bin/sh is wrong....thats why when you go into terminal you see sh3.2 if you remove it and make a new symlink wireless tether will work....i can post the commands I was given that worked fine but I make no guarantees it will work or that it wont do something bad to your phone but I will give you the commands I used.
using terminal and your /system will have to be r/w
rm /system/bin/sh
ln -s /system/bin/sh0 /system/bin/sh

I have no knowledge of flashing sbf's, so I don't want to brick my phone with no experience on fixing it. I'd appreciate it though if someone else would want to try it. I want to see if this actually deblurs it >_>

I would think it would have to be changed in other areas of the root partition. Not sure exactly which areas though. I'll do some experimenting and post back.

anyone with a bravo willing to give it a whirl?
Just flash cm7 lol

The Atrix has it and I tried it. It just disconnected me from MotoBlur. Contacts was still usable, Gallery won't connect to social networks, and Music won't work at all. For some reason, I wiped and tried it again and it didn't work. Not really useful though since you can achieve the same thing by freezing services in Titanium Backup.

[Q] Got root but wifi tether troubles me

Ok so I just ordered a X from ebay and its on its way. So I started doing a little research on rooting since I want to root it right away. I have done some research in this form but wanted to be sure before I attempted anything. So, is their one solid way to root the phone no matter what version it is? If not what do I need to know for certain OTA versions so I dont brick my phone? Thanks!

Sweet thanks man
Ok so I have revived my phone and rooted it. Its awesome by the way. But I am in the process of setting up WiFi tether. But each time I start it the 3g hotspot comes up in the background. So when I connect my computer and go to any website it shoots me strait to the Verizons page. Even though I have root and am running a different WiFi tether program other then the 3g hotspot that the x comes with. How do I get around this without being charged.
Try using easytether to usb tether instead
I would really like to use some sort of wifi tether. Their should be some sort of work around or fix.

wifi / bluetooth issues on Atrix 4g

Hello Everyone,
I have a slight problem, here goes, my friend was using my Atrix 4g and she started forceclosing apps and now my wifi / bluetooth wont turn turn on. The phone is updated to the 4.1.8.3 software and yes wifi/bluetooth was working before and after the update. So would anyone any intel on how I would be able to recover them back ? When turning on wifi it reads error and bluth does nothing they both try to go on and then nothing can you help. Thanks sstageboy5 later peace.

Are you on stock 4.1.83, or are you rooted?
If rooted, do you have Titanium Backup installed, or anything like Bloat Freezer?
Have you tried just rebooting?
More info please.....................and go slap your friend!..............HARD!
Hello , and yes im on stock 4.1.8.3 and I dont have Titanium Backup ya c its hard for me cause I dont have a credit card to buy any apps and the free ones just dont cut the mustard I was told. Do you have any suggestions ?

Apps like Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, Bloat Freezer, etc. all require root access, so if you are not rooted, that's a moot point. Are you on AT&T? If so, you could try taking it to an AT&T store, or call customer support. Should have no issues as you haven't messed with your phone from stock.
I was having the same BT issue where it wouldn't turn on. I went through all sorts of methods to fix it and finally got it working ... been working perfect ever since. Off the top of my head, I can't recall what it was that I did, but I'll think on it and try to repost my solution. If I'm not mistaken, it was a 3rd party app that was causing the issue, but I'm not 100% on that.
Do you happen to have a banking app installed? I know that when .83 came out, the banking apps quit working and I did a work-around to fix it. I believe that was the issue. I uninstalled my fix and the banking apps. I've since reinstalled them and used Motorola's certificate installer. BT still works well.
No I dont any banking apps on the phone
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Banking apps shouldn't have affected BT. Didn't on my phone. The banking app issue was a blank screen after login.
Beamed in from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium app
I had a issue where I couldn't turn my wifi back on (1.8.3)
When you toggled it on, it would show scanning, then turn back off. I had to flash sbf 1.2.6 to fix it, then OTA update again
Kool thanks much appreciated

No, the banking apps weren't the issue...it was more likely the mucking around that I did with the certificates that created any issue. Perhaps it was just coincidental as it happened at the same time and I resolved it after removing the certificates and banking app. In any case....mine now works flawlessly, albeit I'm not completely sure what I did to resolve it.
