Samsung Captivate ROM Flashing *VIDEO* How-To - Captivate Android Development

All links pulled due to XDA Request after an XDA member complained I was only out for profits to a moderator on a few products I have. Due to the fact I link to a product or two and a few other things in many videos, I was asked to pull any content relating to this.
I will still be offering all this great material at my website. Just go to google and search for MobileTechVideos.

Great work!

I'm sure a lot of users will appreciate the time you put into this. I thank you for them ;-)

Good idea, but allow some constructive criticism. Too long of a video, people don't really need to know how the file structuring works, too long of a demonstration is just going to cause them to get impatient and step ahead of you, possibly bricking or causing their device to malfunction. That's all fine and good, but you forgot to emphasize that new Captivate's don't have 3-button.
It's important, because if they end up bricking it, the only way to recover is to make a usb jig to force the phone into download mode. I would say that to protect yourself, give people the proper precautions to flash. If i were to buy a captivate right now, and try to flash Cog or something with Odin and botched it up, I wouldn't be able to boot it into Download or Recovery, and would most likely have to do a warranty claim.
Long post short, I think you should definitely edit video one and make a notion of the importance of the 3-button fix. Good video over-all, and I always thought it would be a great idea to have a visible tutorial video as some people learn better from videos than they do from text or audibles, but way too much information, being well informed is best case scenario for any scene, as it would lessen the clutter of idiotic searchless support we suffer on here, but 3 parts is too much. Another thing I'd like to mention is if people need to be instructed on how to manage their screen real estate, they probably won't understand any of the video.

Thanks a lot for the comment. I know it is LONG, but the intent was to give users a Real-Time analysis and be with them step by step. I mentioned the importance of watching the video BEFORE flashing as well a few times. I included a large disclaimer as well in the beginning. This was really a shot to all the "I have no clue how to ROM" folks so I made it as newbie-proof as possible. Try to keep a, I have no clue how to do this and I'm not an IT pro type of mentality when watching as that is the TARGET audience. I'll definitely consider making a shorter version however with time-lapsed instances.

Well, great job, it's something that should definitely be worked on and stickied. If at all possible I would still recommend at most a pause and a text overlay alerting the noobs in question of the 3 button. I work at AT&T, and I deal with captivates every day, and I get a lot of people who come back in with bricked phones that don't have the 3-button fix. I would say, before they try flashing anything, make sure 3-button is present, and if it's not, stress how important it is, and stress how important it is that they follow your directions to the T if it is indeed absent, as it's the only user-friendly way to recover from a brick. I only say this because the fickle community known as the internet might take it out on you if they follow your video and end up with a doorstop.
Nice job dude, should definitely be a stickied topic, you've done a service to all of the XDA members; we won't have to answer as many questions now!

To truly make sure I'm on the same page as you, are you referring to the 3 button download mode sequence? I teach the step using the 2 button plus USB cable sequence instead. Just making sure.

Lots of phones don't have any button combination that works, even if you are just holding the vol buttons and inserting the USB. I think he is just talking in general for people to know if their phones are cable of entering download mode via any way possible before flashing, as it is always a topic of "I bricked my phone help me" status.

I see. Nothing leading up to entering download mode will brick the phone. So basically if you are unable to enter download mode during this video, literally all you have done is backed up your applications. At this time I assume a post or comment would be made and other methods may be mentioned. See what I mean? Basically if you can't complete the step at the point of the download mode step, you won't risk getting stuck.

these are very nice videos, gret for begginers!
realy sorts things up!
one thing i am missing here...
the id restore, in all my installes i always backup the 2.1 original device id, and i had to implement it int the cog roms or any other using android id changer.
i tried it on 3 different captivates, with different rom versions of cog, all with the same results. maybe you shuld mention it in a comment or something.
my 2 cents.

Excellent point. I did forget about the ID Changer app and that the COG roms and many others were momentarily not reflashing SSID info. I'll try and cook that into the first video.

nice video bro BTW, do you necessarily have to flash back to stock rom using odin or can you just use clockwork and rom manager to do a direct flash?

You can but nobody really recommends it. Flashing back to stock is just the easiest way to ensure Vodoo or other lagfix options don't get in the way of the way the ROM was natively intended to install. I wanted to do a full wiping flash. The master clear really is going above and beyond but hey I was being an over achiever...

I think this is really nice, but it seems like there is a gap between the end of video one and the beginning of video two. You explain how to boot into download mode, but then you never actually show the flashing back to stock process, and instead skip right to re-rooting the newly flashed phone.

I can't believe I missed that. I recorded all of that footage and have it in the single bulk file but apparently missed it when cropping the file for multi-part uploading. I'll fix it tonight and thank you for pointing that out.
EDIT: I actually didn't miss that. My video project shows I cropped correctly but after producing the software unexplainably cropped incorrectly. I'm patching with the latest update and then hoping I can correctly produce that clip. I'll reupload soon. I just didn't have 30 mins available at the end to full watch the clips.
OK CLIP 2 SYNC ISSUES RESOLVED. ALL CLIPS ARE NOW INLINE...

I'm new to Android but I have some decent enough tech skills from a career in IT and tinkering. However I was absolutely terrified to do this just because of the harsh reality that bricking my phone is possible. This guide was immensely helpful and I'll probably attempt to flash to 2.2 soon. Thanks for all your work!

Should be sticky! v

I've just found your videos and while I haven't watched them yet (it's too late, tomorrow.....) I have one comment - please don't edit out info about file structure, etc. I need that kind of info! I'm hoping to learn enough to get brave and take the plunge

about the DK05 leak wasn't about monopoly

he is lying about the whole thing. i did not give it to people i liked...
i only gave it to people that developed for the epic and people that they trust weather i liked it or not.
I gave firon the leak of dj29 then whodaman & firon decided to leak it without my approval a week later... they have the power to leak froyo without me approving that .. it take time to test froyo.. i assure you that guy that leaked it is not a developer or a tester..
thanks the mods for closing the thread of the dk05 leak because flashing the leak is NOT SAFE!
i just don't want people bricking their phone and yes it has a signature. don't take word for it my source confirmed it..
the closed leak lasted for a week before it became out of control..
Good to know that bro!

I agree it wasnt posted by many people who had it for a REASON as to prevent problems and people getting BRICKED or not flashing properly.
Sit back and think about how long the leak has been out do you all really think that if it was WORTHY of being let out to the masses it would have taken so long? No it would have been posted as a rom for mass consumption REALLY Fast....

They absolutely are.
I tested DJ29 for about a week and found it was good enough for a release. DK05 bricked my modem, so I didn't consider it safe.
The ROM was -probably- okay to release, but the modem is not.
It was not held back for fame or any bull**** like that.
There are too many trolls on these forums who obviously don't understand the time and patience it takes to make things like this possible.
I appreciate all the hard work you've done noob, and firon.
I really wish I had the knowledge to participate, but my time will come

You are dead right on this one. The Epic side of the house is unbelievably bad. Not only are things slow, at no fault to anyone here, but there is WAY too much bickering in these threads. I go to the threads concerning my EVO and love it. I come here and am continually caught off guard by the way folks are. Either way, I want my Epic to stay my main phone, so I keep coming back.
Any one know what the "phone, orange triangle and little computer" mean. I fear I bricked my phone. I can't even get into download mode now. WHen I press 1 and power up the charging battery comes on the screen. Thanks for trying to keep this from happening. This the first time I have bricked a phone in many years. Guess ut was bound to happen at some point.
Why not just release the rom + modem with a disclaimer that it may brick your phone and require an Odin flash? Also, the safety net Odin represents in itself, I think, nullifies any danger from bricking.
And another thing; don't send things to people over the internet and expect them to stay secret.

Lol, that's my problem. I love my Epic, so I just skim through the bickering & hang around. No offense but a lot of it does seem about egos & fame, but I understand what goes into being a dev & it is nice to have recognition for your work. But at the same time it's not safe to release stuff not ready for the primetime because everyday average users looking for a better phone experience will just end up bricking their phones. & like I said, everything noob has put out has been quality work & I've never had a problem with any of it. just my two cents.

Hm. What you're describing sounds like you have the phone plugged in while you're trying to enter Download mode, which isn't very effective. Try plugging it out first.
Anyway we can have you guys upload DK17 at least for us to flash or odin? I can wait for the final modem...jjst want an up to date rom.

Very well put. I am ok waiting. I don't think it's some big conspiracy. I feel better knowing that the newer radios seem to fix the gps. Now we just need to make it safer to use. Until then I'll just pull up a chair, crack open a beer and roast some marshmallows courtesy of all the flames. Anyone care to join? lol
I'm not getting dragged into another fight on here, the **** with Hero was bad enough, but I will say a few things on this issue.
1. Odin gives a safety net, and it works well.
2. The modem is safe, so long as you're competent enough to flash it right. Thats not a shot at anyone who got a brick from it, but it works fine for me and many people who flashed it successfully.
3. This ROM is essentially **** anyway. I had one of the early leaks of it, and I went back to DJ29. The music player has issues, there are UI bugs in the launcher, the camera & flashlight APIs are broken for everything but the stock camera app, and there's still the lag issue on unlock. This is all straight off a wipe as well, so it isn't that.
4. Sometimes it isn't good to give everything to the public. I don't agree with keeping it in a secret little circle for devs, but sometimes things NEED to be tested and cleaned up before they can be given to the public.
5. As for the whole thing that it was a lie that there are tags from the source in the ROM, I'm not aware of everything, but I have found a few myself. All pointing to one Korean name, who built the ROM originally, and it's the same name as on the DJ29 leaks. I'm sure you're smart enough to find it. Does that mean he leaked it? No, but it is still a liability for him and his career because it was built on his machine & probably by him as well. Some people on here are just selfish and don't realize that their craving for the latest and greatest could cost someone their job.
There. I'm done.
This is exactly why the Epic community is not progessing as fast as the Evo community, the leaks don't get put into the right hands. And progress haults, I understand your concern about bricks but maybe you should post a thread with a request for people to Close beta test and perhaps create an application that can be filled out and submitted via PM to the person in control of the leak, this could help the rom fall into the correct hands that can test and verify a rom.
Thank you.
Well when you released dj29 he lost his job then

root

I don't know much about root with the mytouch 4g Or any phone for that matter A
except that it is considered very very good However it may or may not want a warranty that is where I hear different issues
Could someone clarify the two things first what are the exact benefits I get out of it. would it take me back to what I had on my nexus --basic android. nd
Secondly would it void my warranty? If so is there a way of getting back to the original factory settings where they would not know?
Lastly there is no way I would be able to do this is there anyway of getting anyone else to do it in person or over the computer By giving me instructions I know there is a list of instructions but I was thinking more along the lines of seeing or speaking to someone
I would pay handsomely for this
Thank you and this was typed and sent using Dragon dictation so forgive me for any misspellings or punctuation I correct is almost all spelling and punctuation till the end

1 - Simply rooting the phone would not give you the same setup that you had on your Nexus One, but it would allow you to get there. By rooting the phone, you are getting complete access to every partition on that phone and THAT is what allows changes to be made to the kernel and operating systems (aka ROMs). Unless you are a developer and know how to create your own ROM, you'd have to wait until one is created for us. Right now I believe there is one called Ice or something to that extent. You can check the Development section for that.
2 - Rooting technically does void your warranty, however there are way to get back to the original stock ROM/settings. There are threads in the Development section as well. As with anything that is in unfamiliar territory, take care and precaution when modifying your phone...especially if you use it on a daily basis and aren't sure of the exact steps to take.
Hopefully this was somewhat useful. Good luck!
Allen, and everyone, thank you
Yes, it does help
You say I can wait for one, or do my own, or use one by ??Ice.
Is that the one that was on the net, namely one like this, created by Scotty also?
http://www.intomobile.com/2010/11/11/root-mytouch-4g-install-custom-recovery/
1. Is that safe
2. Is the "flash" the thing that can get you back to factory settings
3. As far as the ? about getting anyone to take baby steps with you in doing this OR somewhere to take the phone to do it, has anyone heard of this.
Lastly, Allen
did you know anything about the phone locking up after a break, when using WiFi (EDIT: Oops thought I mentioned this in the post above. fwiw, anyone know why I can use wifi over the net quite well, using my browser (not to confuse using the wifi calling app, as one gent thought I meant. But then after a brief break, it locks up. even if I switch back to hspa. I have to restart. any ideas?)
Again, Thanks Allen, and all
If the only thing you know about rooting is "its very very good" then my suggestion would be to not do it just to do it.... do your research first, learn the basics and what its all about, yes there are pro's but theres con's. A simple mistake could leave you with a very expensive paper weight. All I'm saying is there's no need to jump in to it. root was around far before android and wont disappear over night. The only thing that I can't stress enough is research research research.

For a beginner developing your own rom would be extremely difficult/almost impossible... no other roms have been released yet except for the ice one but that is the exact same thing as what you have now minus the stock apps
One problem with using other peoples roms is if you can't read the code you really don't know what your putting on your phone... with XDA a decent amount of us can read code and would say something if we found it malicious but what if noone took the time on that specific rom? unless you can read it that just brings me back to you really never know
So I guess that answers your is it safe question... its safe if you know what your doing... and don't get me wrong I'm not tryin to make it sound scary it'll be a 1 in a million shot to find a malicious file on xda but it could happen
2 flash an equal to install ... as installing a rom flashing a rom

thanks. No, that just about answers it. very well, I might add. I will wait
what i meant, is if there is one that comes out, might there be someone who will walk you thru it, i.e for a newbie either thru chat, phone, or somewhere to take your phone to get it flashed with the new rom
oh ok i see, you would probably not want someone to do it for you because youll need to do it more than once... if someone walks you through it at least you learn how to do it and you'll be able to do it next time (and trust me theres always a next time) if your interested in doing it i pm'd you my aim name and id help you out with it... its really quite simply when its broken down... but like i said before id do some more research on it first and come up with some reason you personally need root access because its importance to other people may not mean anything to you n vice versa.

That heart-stopping moment

I'm new to this root/flash etc and it has been fairly difficult getting my head around what it all means. Guides such as Intratech's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969 are extremely helpful and much appreciated but still aren't really for noob's like me who don';t know all the acronyms or processes. (and where is the THANKS button - I see the thanks scores in the side bar but be buggered if I can find the way to thank someone)
As an example of what I mean, a guide such as siberian tiger's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674286 clearly contains valuable info but I have no idea which ROM to choose or why there are so many different ones.
Also, where do you download them from?
I got often sidetracked while trying to find out things, and nowhere did I find a set-out process that didn't require considerable research to work out what was being said. But I eventually got to where, when my new SGS3 arrived, I was ready to try stuff on it.
First I rooted it. There was confusion here because it wasn't clear that CF Root was a part of a larger process that included CWM, but I found it in Chainfire's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
Then my phone found an update - it's German market from Kogan so I went from i9300XXLEF to i9300XXLG8. I started in on removing the German stuff not vaild here but then realised I would be better doing what I originally wanted which was installing a stock Aussie ROM. First I tried out TriangleAway (with trepidation considering the rather dire warnings about bricks ) and it worked just fine, resetting my counter.
I then used CWM to run a backup of the system to my external SD.
So, using Odin I VERY carefully followed the process in Chainfire's guide.
All went well for a while...
Then the phone booted up and I got a message about Contacts not starting and then android.process.acore 'stopping'.
The heart missed a beat. I clicked OK, thinking (rather desperately ) 'it's OK, probably just a part of the set up process.'
Many clicks later, with the new system appearing in brief flashes in between 'acore' messages the gaps between heart beats became extremely long.
I forced it down (holding power for 10 secs) and started it again. 'It's better! It's going past the start up! it's...' BUGGER! there it is again!!!'
Searching frantically I found Faryaab's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610 thread with a lovely Youtube clip by TotallyDubbedHD (found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8Tga_yKywc&feature=player_embedded
In it he mentions wiping the data, cache and dalvik cache. So I followed the clip and wiped them all, then ran the Odin process again.
Same result. Looking for paddles for heart-starting machine at this point.
AND I couldn't seem to boot into download mode any more. AND the Recovery mode was different now, with far fewer options. I tried using Recovery to Restore my backup - it found it, started to run it, then failed.
I'm not sure what the issue was with the Download option for start up, maybe in my distraught state I wasn't holding the buttons down properly or something, but after using the truncated version of recovery to wipe data and cache again, I finally got back into the Download... I went back to Odin and ran the latest German ROM - my reasoning was (not good at this point ) that maybe the phone needed the German stuff, even though I'd seen nothing about such problems in my 4 days of research on XDA. I also wondered if the Aussie ROM was corrupted...
The German one installed and started, but after about 1 minute I got the 'acore' msg again. Wondering how I was going to tell the missus I had broken my phone after less than 12 hours, and getting increasingly concerned about the lateness of the hour (as a PC support person I learned early never to do anything major after 10PM :lol I used the now restored Recovery mode to wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, then, with a prayer to the gods I don't believe in, I ran the Aussie ROM onto it again.
10 minutes later it started, sweet and fast, no errors, and no German-only icons.
I have a brand new, Aussie phone! I did some downloading of Apps to get it al back how I had it and went to bed.
I can't seem to do Thanks in threads (or even post in some of them yet) but I wish to thank wholeheartedly all those who spend so much time trying to document all the confusing issues involved for those of us learning a new language. It's been a bit of a slog but I'm getting there...
(I got to bed and told the wife, rather proudly, 'I broke my phone, AND I fixed it...'
I didnt root my phone, but i got the acore message too. Got shot of tthat & still my stock messages are still screwed. 100% agree that for a newbie nothing is crystal clear. "Search for this" "download that" not ideal wthen you are fretting on wether u just your phone up. Resisted the root, route until i see something that makes perfect sense.
The frustrating thing though, nobody believes you followed it to the letter, no matter how many times you explain it, simple stock flash (hence why i did it), even the wife cooda done that, but still had problems...still Think the 3 network was the culprit.
Get used to that feeling.....
I've been flashing phones since my x8 (had a Samsung galaxy 5, galaxy S1, nexus s, galaxy nexus and now the S3)
I've had plenty "I've definitely f*cked it now" moments.
To be honest those moments are half the fun of flashing stuff to phones.
Crackflashing is an addiction and those moments and when you sort them are like a really good hit.
Best way to learn is to make mistakes.

I made a few mistakes and bricked my previous phone, an Xperia Pro MK16i, and learnt in the process. Haven't had a heart stopping moment on my S3 yet *touches wood*
Having said that, it is thanks to the tireless community at XDA that has ebbed me on to take the (minor) risks in order to reap the (humongous) benefits of tinkering with my phone. So thank you all.

You reminded me the first time i tried to root my Galaxy S .
It was a disaster
The phone had stuck in the root screen(z4 root some will remember)
for over 20 minutes and i didn't know what to do.
I was searching the xda for an answer but nada.
I thought that's it you just spend 600e for a brand new phone and you destroyed it
I plugged the battery out went to bed and the other day with more clear mind i read all the guides for rooting from the start and voila i did rooted it my heart came again in the place where belongs
Don't hesitate to post in my thread your questions.I'll try to help as much as i can

My first trail with flashing and rooting was on my mum's galaxy tab, it was a horrific experience since i might brick it at that time but it went without a problem.
After that i started flashing phones s1, s2 , s3 . But to be honest, without the help from the guys in this form i would have deff bricked many phones.
I had a few of these moments on my LG GT540 what worried me was I had no replacement phone, you will get used to them and learn how to solve them in no time.

Happy flashing there mate!
Anything you need ask or pm me,i like helping!
First android phone i ever flashed was my Galaxy S1...(btw i absolutely loved this phone!)
I remember i had bricked mine and it stayed in SAMSUNG logo,we had issues with the 3 button combo back then!
The bootloader wouldn't let me go to download mode to use ODIN!
I was sooooo sc***ed! xD
It was the most expensive phone i had ever bought and i freaked out!
Thank god we built a homemade jig with my informatics proffesor back then and we revived the damn thing!
Great guy..
Point is if it's a software error it's 99% fixable, even imei can be fixed!
(happened with mine... thank god i had a backup!)
The worst thing as an effect would be...losing your apps/settings?
So don't worry...
Don't worry everyone has had their ups and downs and for me that's a part of the beauty of modding (rooting/unlocking/...)
I still remember the bootloader unlocking of my HTC legend.
You needed burn an iso CD and set your BIOS of your PC to boot from CD then run that cd and connect your phone.
Before the process begun it stated (about 10times) that you should NOT disconnect your phone in any case. The fact they mentioned it so much made me kida worried.
But I took a deep breath and continued. You had to follow some steps answer some y/n questions and then you needed to boot your phone in fastboot
And time it so that you hit enter on your PC about 2sec after it booted into fastboot...
which I did..... but the script was still stuck on waiting... And the warning message was still there visible in the top of the script.
I started hitting enter again and again but that obviously didn't help.
After 30 min I realized there was nothing else I could do then unplugging the USB and pulling the battery. At that point I was convinced I just bricked my €450 phone.
You can't imagine how happy I was when I found out it still booted. So I rebooted my PC did some more research and tried again. And finaly after 2days and 10 attempts I got my unlocked bootloader. That victory feeling was o so great!
I must say things are getting easier for the end user and because of that it's partly losing it's charm. But it's nice too read your stories and see that some of you still experience that victory feeling!
that heart stopping moment is the best part of this crazy debranding flashing rooting customizing "thing" we so love to do and my experience wouldn't be complete without it. been at it since windows phones came out and i really think i wouldn't stop hahaha!
btw bricked a couple but jtag is always there to save us ass

OK, the difference between what I saw on the youtube and what was in the guide I used seems to have been the parts about (in Recovery) wiping the data and deleting cache and dalvik cache. I might be wrong and one of the gurus here could clear things up...
But deleting or changing Contacts was clearfly, in my case, not going to be a solution - Touchwiz was the first error and there were a couple of others.
Some history... I have been doing User Support and Desktop Help as well as Sysadmin since 1987. I am a noob to Android but definitely not to computers nor effing around with system partitions.I LIKED DOS and I can think my way through software issues with an aplomb that users have called for. In other words, I am not a nuff-nuff.
But the confusion generated by ST's Guide where I can just run CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4 or CF-SGS3-CWM-v5.5-v1.5 (forgive me if I am quoting the wrong poster for the thread) and then find threads telling me to install Android SDK so I can access ADB to root my phone is nothing short of awesome.
I rooted my phone. I tried to run the approved Aussie ROM on it, and then had to recover things so it would work. Did I miss a step? Was it that even though my PC recognised and allowed Odin access to my phone I should have first run Samsung USB drivers? Should I have found out what an 'Insecure kernel' is and installed one? WTF is an insecure kernel and what programs give you one if you DON'T want to run a DOS window and do command line commands?
In all the hundreds of ROMs, Kernels. and other installations presented here on site, what, as a Noob, should I be looking for? The version numbers don't mean much to me. I prefer to stay with an Aussie version but if there's a JB out there that makes my phone run better, longer, faster, I could give a flying eff when Telstra decides to update my phone... but apart from a thread offering 'buttery smooth' menu motions, none of the ROM's seem to have descriptions of WHY I should install them.
I have bought Titanium Backup and System Panel on recommendations of a thread about battery life that seems to have nothing to do with battery life but has some fascinating stuff in it anyway (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=471521&page=4 and I am backing up every time I make changes that I like, but some of these programs seem to duplicate what others do - e.g. there's a File Explorer download that offers rooting, kernel and ROM installs AND lots of file-type options, but given I have CF Root, CWM, Super SU, Titanium etc. why would I need another?
I am happy to learn. I don't mind paying for the work others have done. As the OP documents, I am willing to take a risk with my hardware to try things out.
But...
is there anywhere on here where anyone has done an Intro to Android systems?
Is there a Glossary somewhere to explain all the acronyms?
Has anyone done a step-by-step of what you replace and why to get a fully functional and fast phone?
Is there a location somewhere on site where the ROM's can be downloaded? (what I have seen is mostly references to ROM's with no links to how to find the MD5 file)
Is there somewhere on site where the features of particular ROM's is listed?
If I am rooted, what else do I need to be able to flash (say) the buttery smooth JB?
a good poem.
OP that was a good poem
you should commission a new book, 50 shades of rooting
nice read
I touch wood never hard bricked my phones. Toyed around with N900, installed android on maemo got in bit of a mess but thanks to maemo community got out of it.
Jailbroke both my iphone 4 and wife's 4S. Flashed few fws on Optimus 3D. Been installing custom FW on S3 since I got it in late May, thanks to indie who helped make the first custom rom for S3 and even not having S3 himself as world wide launch happened in June.
Anyway my worst moment came when i plugged my external 500 WD drive to S3 via OTG cable and drive was detected for little time but then disappeared. I plugged it in the pc to check it and it showed unrecognized usb device. I still thought it wasn't big deal and tried it on my NB and still same. After it didn't show up in any of my media players (a have a few) i got panicky. It had 2 years worth of data/movies/music/backups and was full to the brim.
I searched and searched on the net and the only solution some said was that the port might have got damaged and needs to be changed. Then found on youtube how to take it out of its casing and thought if i could just hook it to my pc with sata cable it will hopefully work.
I took it out and to my shock WD had soldiered some weird connector on it and it could only connect through it and the standard sata port wasn't there.
I had all but given hope and posted it on one website about this issue and found one nice old (self proclaimed) gentleman posted that i should try to put it in freezer overnight as i have nothing to lose. I thought what a joke but did put it in the freezer wrapped in thick plastic bag.
Next day i took it out and thought just might give it a try and plugged the drive in the pc and to my amazement and relief it came up with message of options of opening the device. WOW i must admit after 20+ years in IT, handling components biz, trading /selling of components, building PCs for others and myself I never heard about this tip. I can't thank that man enough and i did recover another drive by doing the same. Both are after 1+ months working fine

The heart-stopper is not the best thing - getting past it and fixing things is the best part. It may be that we wouldn';t enjoy the fixing as much without the previous heart-stopper but that 'oh, f**k' moment is still nothing to wish for...
@spaco22 - in 19876 I bought an XT PC so I could write my SciFi Novel. The pc took over my life and to this date I haven't done much more nthan occasional spurts of creativity in the writing field - did do some poetry though.
@Sak500 - the freezer trick has rescued a number of drives over my years. Including ones making the dreaded 'tick...tick...' noise. You were lucky - as a drive dies you get about 15 minutes to get the data off before it goes to god. And the freezer trick doesn't usually work twice... AND you need to put it in a sealed plastic bag... unlike a client of mine who sat it in their chest freezer and complained to me it didn't help and when I got there, there was still a small puddle of melt under the drive. :silly:
Mind you the best was a Manager who brought me his almost new laptop and told me it was warranty because it 'just stopped working' and when I took it out of the bag, and checked for physical case stress damage, found a car tyre track across the back of the case. Like Lenovo would warranty for running over the thing in a Territory...
In spite of my intro to all this, I am looking forward to the journey. Y'all could help by giving me reasons for my missus letting me flash her beloved GNote from United Emirates... *innocent look*
I've got a super pro tip: Backup the EFS partition!!!
Almost every other issue is solvable with a bit of digging on this forum. An EFS partition format would need the assistance of Samsung Service Centre personnel, and a good explanation as to how it came to be.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18524176 works for me. This is the first thing I did after rooting using CF-ROOT. Also, CF-ROOT is the safest "first thing" as it only flashes a new recovery image and no kernel nor any ROM.
Guides can only be made so noob friendly, so I'm afraid some acronyms and finger crossing are inevitable. My advice would be to read, read and read some more before attempting any actions that may brick your phone. Remember nandroid is your friend and as long as you read the threads and follow the instructions help will always be there.

Great tip and one I'd like to follow up on but the server hosting it seems not to be available.(see screenshot below) I'll check back and maybe look on google-play as well. Thanks.
@ghostofcain - been doing that. Check the screen shot of my Chrome window  But there comes a time when one must try some of the things one has been reading about and I'm enough of a sysadmin that I follow system instructions very precisely - had to rebuild a server once, unpaid, over the weekend, because I skipped a line in an upgrade process.
So when strange things happen, and you're trying to think without that reassuring 'thud-THUD' pulse that you don't miss until it isn't there, it isn't all that reassuring to know you've done all the right things, there's just a mad moment of internal panic when you second guess and try to blame and desperately, after long training in PC's, try NOT to touch ANYTHING until you understand what just happened.
Another question - can someone point me to the download area? It has been mentioned in a few threads and I have a PM telling me that is where ROM's etc can be found, but I can't seem to find a link to that page or server. Feel free to tell me I'm being dumb...
And weirdly, I found the thanks button in posts and I swear I looked there before and it wasn't there. Maybe you can't thank until you've posted or something?
I've often told my customers, 'if computers/windows behaved as they are meant to I wouldn't have had a job for the past 25 years...'
Hm... image doesn't show in preview... it's attached as well.

Once you learn all the Voodoo tricks to fixing half of your problems with Roms and Kernels.. or soft bricked devices, you'll be smooth flashing..till then you must go thru a few bricks, a few data wipes, a few crashes, and a few replacements

[Q] Will pay today

Hi, i have an atrix, once upon a time i let it fly off my motorcycle while using gps. 12 cars and a full schoolbus later i needed another phone. I got another atrix 2 months ago off ebay for a fair price. I really like the phone, but i was running kennethpenns alien ROM. I tried to put another rom on, but i had to unlock it first, well i have failed miserably. I dont think i am bricked, but it said "Failed to boot 0x1000" to i scrolled down to android recovery and selected that thinking i will start over. Now it says "reading ODM fus:1" and its stuck doing that.
Look here is the short facts. Im not a developer, but i LOVE messing around with my atrix. I have a lapdock that i like to occasionally use, I use it in my car all the time in the dock and i have an 11 week old daughter (my first child) that i am fond of taking video and pictures with and sharing with my family. I sometimes web surf from my HD dock and use it for music.
I am 42yrs old, and i try to keep up, but obviously i messed up.
Here is what i am looking for, Someone who, for $30 will speaker phone, Go To Meeting with me (i can set it up) and spend no more than 45min with me to get this unlocked and a ROM on it. The question is the ROM. I need all these functions that i mentioned above, i dont care if the fingerprint reader works or not, it would be nice but it doesnt have to.
Is there anyone out there that can help, or would like to? I will paypal Today, as soon as you contact me. I will check messages, but if you want to go ahead and call my office phone #, here it is.xxx-xxx-xxxx, it calls a Dallas number, but i am a remote worker on the east coast in Atlanta.
I will reply to this post, once someone has contacted me to help, thus no need for multiple call.
Thank you so much for anyone up to the challenge. Max
EDIT I should add, that whomever helps, i dont care if your 6 years old, have a little patience with me. I rarely use Command Prompt in my day to day living, although i took a C+ class 10 years ago and got a C-....seriously embarresed. I also have RSDlite installed and all the drivers, unzipped in a file on my desktop as instructed from this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423

No need to pay for something that you can easily do yourself.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600 This link should have all the relevant information you need.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871 This should solve your softbrick problems. You are going to need to install Official Motorola Drivers found here: http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-E...arging-Drivers and a USB to micro USB cable.
As for Roms, I do not use Webtop myself, but there are many threads in the development section that can operate under the conditions you require. It just requires a little bit of reading, if you have taken C++ before, this should be fairly simple. After unbricking your phone and installing recovery, all you have to do is flash the zip from within the recovery, quite harmless compared to RSD.
It's very simple, i had this issue too and this tip below worked with me, hope it helps you
I: Unlock BootLoader
Step 1:
- Download file Atrix.zip, then extract to C, now you have folder C:\Atrix
- Install Handset USB driver & RSD lite
Step 2.
- On Atrix, go to RSD protocol mode
Step 3.
- Flash intl-fix-try1.sbf in Atrix folder via RSD lite
Step 4.
- On Atrix go to Fastboot mode
- On your PC, open CMD and type
c: cd \Atrix
fastboot oem unlock [ Remember your device ID (16 letters and numbers)]
fastboot oem unlock #### ( #### is your device ID above)
fastboot reboot
Done
In the first reboot, you'll see the text Unlocked on your screen.
II: Install CWM
1.go to fastboot mode
2. on PC, type in cmd
c: cd \Atrix
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot

Now go flash Nottach or "The ROM" and enjoy your phone.
you'll find Atrix.zip here
Thanks, working on it

The Megaupload link was siezed by the FBI so i was unable to download that zip pack. I did get the motodrivers though, thank you.
Just searched the thread for V4.2 and found a dropbox mirrored site. Sorry! Got it!
AND I FIXED MY SOFTBRICK!
Sweet! Now flash recovery from 4.2 then flash the room of your choice from recovery... some process is painless.

No JOKE! Wow this is unbelievable, except the very believable part where i unlocked it, (unbricked it) and then went back into main and it said, battery too low to flash! Bahaha, im charging it now. So curious to see what the Nottach ROM is like. Really wish there was a "Best" Rom for my listed applications.
On another note, this will hold me over until december when i see all the Head to Head reviews of the 920 lumina (since my work is based in Windows Outlook and Salesforce.com software) the Optimus G, or the Nexus version of said phone. Not sure there are any other power house phones out there being released besides the One V+ which doesnt really strike me. You know what does though, thats a little oddball but cool? That Padfone 2 coming out. If that has LTE, i really might consider that as a serious contender to replace my awesome Atrix 4g.
If you don't really need the webtop, I would suggest epinter's cm10. Hardware Acceleration does not work right now, but all normal day to day process works very well. Hopefully, with so many people working on the leaked rom, it will come to fruition very soon and we'll have a fully functional jelly bean on our hands. I read somewhere that they are working on an improved version of webtop, but since I don't use it, I didn't really pay attention to that development. Hopefully that did not take up too much of your time and enjoy your newly unlocked phone!

[Q] Brick after loading cm d802 on verizon phone

sigh let's start the horror story. So I rooted my verizon LG G2 (VS980) phone yesterday using this guide:
http://theunlockr.com/2013/10/25/root-lg-g2-versions-video/
I found that pretty easy so i decide to then be more adventurous and load cyanogenmod 10.2 on my phone since I heard it was officially on nightly release for verizon phones. So then i came across this youtube video explaining how to do this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_s3eO-jvNWk
I make 3 mistakes in this process:
1. i don't do the settings part
2. i don't wipe the phone
3. and most importantly i download the wrong cyanogenmod 10.2 version. I put the 802 international version on it instead of the verizon version.
Now my phone is stuck with fastboot with a black screen.
I can go into download mode and have tried the following guides:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
In this one it gets stuck at 49% loading when i use the verizon version
the second:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960
here when i start to load it says my device is the wrong model because i loaded the wrong cyanogenmod
Now that i know why my phone wouldn't load the verizon rom (because i had cyanogenmod 802 international). I have successfully loaded the stock 802 rom on my phone. the bad part is the touch screen is all wacky and i can't get into setting to go into developer mode and finally fix my phone.
Any ideas on where i can go from here? If i could just get into developer mode i can restore everything by loading TWRP then loading the cyanogenmod for verizon.
Just an idea, but maybe you could use a mouse via OTG in the meantime.

thanks i didnt know i could use a mouse. I will try to find a cable that will allow me to do that.
I was able to help a few peeps with the same prob get back to stock. Pm me if you need help.
some updates.
I didn't get the mouse to help me around the touch screen. I just memorized where all the new locations where for example the middle of the screen clicked the bottom left
I have been able to get this european 820 stock ROM running on my verizon phone and have it in debugging mode.
All the other flash methods are failing me because i get "different model" error.
I'm currently trying to update my build.prop file so i can get the other flash methods to work since this is the file they are looking at to see if it's ok to flash with the rom you have select. Personally i find that kinda silly. I mean i'm flashing the thing give me an option that say "are you sure you want to do this? you are about to flash your phone with an compatible rom". Yes i'm aware i put the wrong rom on the thing now flash my phone with this one.
Oh it would be great if someone out there could post me their verizon build.prop. Would really appreciate that.
update
don't change the build.prop model number to VS-980. my phone is now in a reboot cycle.
I can get into download mode but i fear that i still won't be able to flash with the right rom because that build.prop is wrong. can i skip this verification step?
I also have twrp running but again it's the European version so the touch screen doesn't work properly. i can't swipe across to do anything even if i wanted to.
I would just do this and start over...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960
WHY?

I can't help myself, I have to speak up..
nothing against the OP BUT this is exactly why I DO NOT try to do this stuff. There's really no benefit that the stock ROM on this phone cannot do...and more...and I read so many reports of people turning their beautifully working phones into little black plastic paper weights. Simply not worth the trouble, time, and possible money :silly: to get a little more screen space, or a smaller NAV bar, or whatever.
And then so many people want KIT-KAT...WHY? Will it REALLY be that much better than what this thing can do now? Or will it just introduce BUGS like every other update always does to an android device? If, and when this phone gets an update to KIT-KAT or whatever version they decide upon, and it actually works without new bugs, then I will be pleasantly surprised. Here we have what just might be the best android phone to land on earth so far, and people want to "improve" it??? My $0.02

Totally unnecessary to make this post. Unless you have something to contribute regarding the prob at hand, please keep your opinion to yourself. The point of these forums is to ask questions and provide help when possible. If you wish to voice you're opinion, I suggest you start your own thread.

I can't speak to everyone else's why but I do it because I'm an engineer and here is what i mean by that. Ever since I was a little kid I would mess around with stuff even though I had no clue what i was doing. I remember the first time I took apart a stereo was because our living stereo broke (the CD player wouldn't play anymore and that's what it was used for mostly). I told my mom not to throw it away so I could see if I could fix it. I was maybe 10 at the time so of course she knew i couldn't possibly fix but she let me. In the end I couldn't fix it (hell i had screws left over) but it was just fun looking around and exploring. As I grew I still kept doing the same thing, taking things apart and explore. Sometimes I can improve the thing I took apart other times I completely break it but most of the time I can just put it back the way it was originally. That's my why.

Sounds like my childhood and I'm an engineer aswell.
Software to me is pure magic, but I'm very happy there's people that can code Roms.
Good luck mate.
Once you fix your phone and it's back to stock it will feel better than sex.
Keep stock for a couple of days and that itching feeling of "i need to do something with this" is gonna come creeping back

Just try searching in Q & A thread. Maybe search "brick"? Read everything you can read. I'll help and comeback when i see it.
Try here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2534511&highlight=brick

I am horribly confused as to why you are an XDA member. :-/
Support your Devs......
I'm having the same problem and haven't been able to get it to work. As soon as I flash the stock d802 (my phone is really d803 but I had a d802 custom rom on it before) the touch screen goes all weird and my phone keeps restarting.
