HTC Magic without data plan

Here's the thing,
I'm portuguese but I live in the UK and I'm going home on vacation.
I want to use my Magic overthere but I don't have a data plan on my portuguese Vodafone SIM.
Is there anyway I can like 'cancel' all the data transfers in the Magic so that it doesn't 'dry out' my portuguese pay as you go SIM ?
Cheerz
change your APN, for example, mines like rogers.apn
so what I do is change it to rogers.apnn and it cant connect. Maybe that'll work for you
I just tried that with my UK SIM and it worked just fine.
Thanks a lot KAwAtA!
disable background data sync, easier than messing with apn settings..then you dont have to worry about fixing your apn once you get back to the UK

I believe this disables some features but it doesn't completely disable your data
you can also try an app in the market called APNdroid

Nexus s decided today was good to lose data

My nexus s lost data connection today and it won't turn back on. Even after reset. Anyone else had this?

Maybe check if something's happened to the APN settings / if they have been disabled?
Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Network Settings
What am I looking for? I havent changed anything?

Sounds like a network issue, you need to call your carrier.

well .. if your phone didn't need any additional configuration for APN during your very first use, then I guess, as princeasi just mentioned, you might have to check with your network operator for help..
the reason why i told tht you might have to define the APN settings is because, for me, I had to manually add the APN, username /password in order to get access to my carrier's data network ...
maybe you could browsing on this link: http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/Carrier_APN_Settings#Italian_Networks
for APN settings..
that link is meant to help configure iPhone APN settings (Android has a lot more parameters to define) .. but the details shud still work with your NexS
(for eg. all settings for my carrier were the same as what were already on my phone by default.. the only thing i had to configure manually was the u/name, password and APN name)
Hope that helps...
I let it auto reconfigure everything and it came back .. not sure what happened

now rooted?? any way to disable data

now that my phone is running CM7...
is there any way to disable data but still be able to send/receive mms?
prior to flashing to CM7, when i was on stock 2.3.4, i was able to get it to where "data" is always on but only to receive mms.. apps like foursquare, fb, etc didnt work. never started using data when i went out of wifi.. bad part about this was i couldnt send mms.. all i remember doing was disabling data in the hidden menu, and changing the APN.. iirc, the "spot where it says "data enabled", that was checked..
now that i have flashed to cm7, i disabled data in the hidden menu, changed the APN, but it still uses data for everything like foursquare, fb, etc once i have data turned on in settings, everything goes on data and starts using it.. foursquare gets updates, etc.. yah i can send and receive mms too but what the heck happened D:
so now im on CM7, is tehre something that can disable data without disabling mms? i understand some people say u need data to send n receive mms but eh
using T-mobile with no data plan.
tried finding that data toggle widget someone had suggested in the past but cant find it.
-------------------
tried disabling data on *#*#4636#*#*, none of the APN's worked.... couldnt get mms or go online
after enabling data... apn's grabbed data.. D:
so back to using the mms.voicestream.com one... and just having data disabled for now... enabling it when i see a mms coming in...
unless u guys have better ideas
Have you tried using a firewall?
You don't need a data plan to send/received MMS.
You do need to have the correct APN setup.
Name: MMS
APN: epc.tmobile.com
MMSC:http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MCC:310
MNC:260
APN type:mms
everything else blank (not set).
is that the only apn i put in there or which ones do i have in there ?
hmm looks like it may be working.. no internet access.. can receive mms... no response on sending yet.

That's good. Also if you haven't done it.
Go into the stock messaging app.
Settings>Custom User-Agent>Chose Custom>Android-Mms/2.0
or chose Nokia N95
this way your incoming MMS doesn't get resize to thumbnail size
good to know ! dunoe what most of these customization stuff does on cm7 ahhahaha anything else ud like to suggest? (even if it doesnt pertain to messaging) xD

You also may try Widgetsoid. Create a custom widget for data and use it to toggle. It toggles by appending a '-' to the APN name. Data turning on by itself is a bug to be addressed in CM9.

Just toggle it off in data usage and don't toggle it on again. You can't permanently disable it. (It's a smartphone after all and it is meant to use the internet.)

Edit the APN n give some weird proxy and address, this should make sure that a conncetion is not established.
Also setting a global proxy will make sure you do not get data.
But if you disable the data no app can force it on.
Apart from that there is no way to disable data permanantly ( Android is meant to stay connected, thats how google wanted it )
Wipe data, wipe cache and dalvik cache. Maybe solved
