Browsing through a bunch of threads reveals a few people mentioning changing their Home Agent on their CDMA phones to improve their data connection. How does it improve it?
- Lower ping times
- A bit higher 3G data speeds
I ran 5 speed tests with the default Home Agent and 5 speed tests with the Home Agent I've set, and I'm consistently seeing about a 20% increase in data speed and ~2/3 shorter ping times. I normally get about 4-500kbps down with 350ms ping times, and now I get about 600kbps down with 120ms ping times. (With 2 bars max coverage in my home, sometimes losing coverage completely)
The Home Agent can be thought of as the default gateway on a home network. It tells the phone which exit node to use when exiting Sprint's network and jumping onto the internet.
By default, the Home Agent is set to 255.255.255.255. This works and gives you a data connection, and figures out the "best" home agent to use, but it's really not ideal since it seems to always go to the Kansas exit node.
You'll need a couple things to change your Home Agent. First is your MSL, which can be found by calling Sprint or using MSL Reader on the market. Second off, you'll need the nearest Home Agent to your current location:
Code:
68.28.57.76 Anaheim, CA Area 1
68.28.57.77 San Jose, CA Area 7 (possible DNS config issue, likely Anaheim)
68.28.185.76 Atlanta, GA Area 5
68.28.185.77 Atlanta, GA Area 5
(speedtest.net says in Houston)
68.28.249.76 Atlanta, GA Area 7
68.28.249.77 Atlanta, GA Area 7
68.28.145.76 Chicago, IL Area 4
68.28.145.77 Chicago, IL Area 4
68.28.177.76 Fort Worth, TX Area 7
68.28.177.77 Kansas City, KS Area 5 (possible DNS config issue, likely Ft. Worth)
68.28.81.76 Kansas City, KS Area 2
68.28.81.77 Kansas City, KS Area 2
(could be Omaha)
68.28.89.76 Kansas City, MO Area 2
68.28.89.77 Kansas City, MO Area 2
68.28.121.76 New York, NY Area 3
68.28.121.77 New York, NY Area 3
68.28.113.76 Pennsauken, NJ Area 3
68.28.113.77 Pennsauken, NJ Area 3
68.28.241.76 Relay, MD Area 7
68.28.241.77 Relay, MD Area 7
(speedtest.net says in Florida)
68.28.153.76 Roachdale, IN Area 4
68.28.153.77 Roachdale, IN Area 4
68.28.49.76 San Jose, CA Area 1
68.28.49.77 San Jose, CA Area 1
To change your Home Agent:
1. Root your phone
2. Install MSL Reader
3. Read and write down MSL
4. Open dialer, dial ##3282# (##DATA#)
5. EPST menu opens, select Edit.
6. Enter MSL, hit OK
7. Select "Data Profile"
8. Tap "Primary Home Agent"
9. Type selected IP into boxes, hit OK
10. Tap "Menu", then "Commit Changes"
11. Phone will restart and you should be able to see lower pings and faster data!
Note: This only works on Sense-based ROMs since AOSP roms do not have EPST settings in them that allow tweaking these settings.
Note2: You can edit this if you are not rooted, you just need to con Sprint into giving you your MSL.

Chicago ones are actually Michigan City, Indiana (from a lookup), which is just outside Chicago area.
Just thought I'd point that out.

I'll have to go through and update these. The list was compiled over three years ago and probably needs updating. You're not the first person to point out that some of the locations are incorrect.
Apparently the NY HA is in Maryland and the NJ HA is in Brooklyn, NY! List will be updated later!
Did this a while ago.
My secondary was set correctly so I switched my secondary to primary and primary to secondary.
Are those all the home agents? Or are you just listing those because they pertain to you? is it possible to get a list for texas?
thanks!
Actually reduced my speeds by 30-50% depending on the address.

Did you try the closest near you? What kind of speeds and latency did you have out of each?

Thank you! I checked and my primary was 255.255.255.255 and the secondary was the home agent it should be using. I've noticed that google will usually think my phone is in Chicago, so I'm guessing when left to decide on it's own it always chose the chicago home agent and not the one an hour away from here. I swapped the primary and secondary home agents and downstream went from ~600kbps to ~1300kbps. I tested both configs three times each and those are the rough averages.

On stock was pulling 2000 down with ping of around 220 and uploads where around 650. After changing to the Forth Worth one and the one stated as being Houston (where I live) couldn't get above 1300 down with ping around 290. Primary Home Agent was the 255 while the secondary was Fort Worth as stock. Ran all the tests off the Austin server which has consistently shown to be the best one near my location. Now I didn't change my secondary home agent when testing different primary home agent. Not sure if that should matter but I wouldn't think so.
what would you choose for la

Can this change be implemented on sense roms, committed to memory then nandroid back to aosp? From my understanding these sort of settings (prl, slot index etc.) r not affected by a rom flash nd settings should keep but just r not conveniently editable in aosp. Correct me if im wrong.

That's the theory behind it. It would take someone setting it on a Sense ROM, flashing to AOSP, then flashing back to Sense to verify all stayed the same. I'm not quite sure where it's saved, but I'm definitely going to assume it's stored in the same place the PRL is.
Interesting thread. I live in Tallahassee, Florida, do you think it would still serve me to change mine to Atlanta, GA, since that would still be a good bit closer than Kansas?
I'm always looking to increase my 3G speeds, since I seem to average around -90 to -100 DB's in my area, definitely serviceable, but still a bit slow.
Of course, it should be easy to revert back to the 255 home agent using the same method if it proves problematic, correct?
Also, what's the best method to use for speed tests? I know the speedtest.net app can be a bit inconsistent.
Sorry for all the questions, thanks!
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1
Click that for a good speed test, I messed around with it a little, I get the best speeds with the original settings.
For what it's worth, my default "Secondary" is 68.28.241.76 and I am in Ocala, Florida. We don't have 4G yet, so these are all 3G numbers.
With using 255.255.255.255 or 68.28.241.76 as my "Primary", I get the same results. I will probably try some of the other HAs (Atlanta and the other 68.28.241 for starters).
Using Speedtest.net for Android (Macclenny, FL and Tampa, FL with same results), I get ~600kbps both directions. I am an average of 412ms for pings as well.
I tried the DSL Reports Mobile Speed Test and got an average of ~675kbps (Lows in 400, Highs in 900).
I have read reports (and reports are very anecdotal) saying that others' 3G speeds are averaging in the 1000kbps range. Anyone, particularly in Florida, having that sort of luck?

It depends on where I am. At home, I average 1.3Mbps-1.6Mbps on 3G. However, at work, I'm lucky to get 500 kbps going down.
I've been doing most of my testing at work but get the same around town. Thanks for your feedback.

So today I was trying to kill my battery after wiping all data to rebuild the battery stats and randomly turned on 4G to help kill the battery, but found that it connected to Clearwire, rather than Sprint. Now I will have to drive around and try and locate the broadcast point.
I live in Wolcott, CT and small town in New Haven County that boarders Hartford County, next to Waterbury. This was a fluke that I turned on 4G but was surprised to see that it connected.
My speeds are crap but have gotten it up to 6mbps down, nothing better than 3G upload speeds though ~0.33mbps up.
Here are some pictures to show.
I live in stamford, no luck with 4g here.

i see your 4g bars, dont seem to much!
Sprint and Clearwire
I thought Sprint used Clearwire's WiMax network. (i.e. Sprint 4G is really a rebranded Clearwire WiMax) Not to mention Sprint owns the majority interest in Clearwire.
In Orange County California I came across a small pocket of 4G coverage. The weak signal only allowed about 1.65 Mbs down and 0.48 up which is far below the 4G spec but better than the usual 3G (altho also below the 3G spec).

Clearwire is Sprint's 4G provider. I have just never seen Clearwire listed as the ISP while in labeled 4G areas thats all...
What I find funny is Clearwire does not list any active broadcast location in CT, so I wonder why I am picking anything up...
A quick google finds that Clearwire is hiring in the Hartford, CT area. Everyone from customer support to RF Engineers. Perhaps you were close to their Hartford location.
last time I was in hartford (at the club lol) I got like 3-4 bars of 4G, it was AWESOME! That's the only place I've ever had 4g, since I live in the springfield area (I wouldn't give my city, that's just stupid. Even though I use my real name as my username and you could easily find me via google. lol)
anyways I was getting like 8mbps down and 2-3mbps up
That's pretty cool and all, but do you really want to post a map to your home on the internet?

I will track down the broadcast point. There are a couple large cell towers in my area that I will start with.
I found the broadcast point, it was were I thought it would be, top of route 69. Was getting almost 11mbps down and around 1.5mbps up. Kind of weird that there is 4G in this area now.
I had 1 bar in new haven not to long ago and got a little over 4 mbps down and about 1 mbps up.
4G Waterbury CT
Hello everyone. Found this post searching around and figured I would join this great forum.
I found out earlier today that 4g service was started up in Waterbury. I saw that the OP is in wolcott. Flip on ur 4G and give it a minute to set up.
With speedtest.net Im getting an average of 9.25 down and 1.75 up.
The internet flies on this phone at those speeds. Web pages load in a second or so compared to 10 secs on 3g.
Finally we get our 10 bucks out of the deal, lol.
4g is all over newhaven and hartford
It's also available in stamford, ct - there is a tower on the TOP of the new Trump building.
Just google "4g stamford" or "4g your town here"
download the sensorly app on your phone and you can see real time reports of it down to road level.
You have to zoom in on this link before it gets accurate
http://www.sensorly.com/Map/4G/USA/Sprint/wimax-sp
nobody tried sensorly?
That sensorly map seems to be inaccurate for me at my current location, it says I should have 4g coverage but I do not. Back at home in seattle though I do have 4g almost everywhere so I am used to having it.
Edit: I stand corrected by the fact that if you download the app and zoom in really close (better then you can on the website) it shows I do not have coverage.

I get 4G throughout E.Hartford and Manchester. None in Glastonbury though. I get 5-8 Down in E.Ha.
There are pockets of 4g in Rocky Hill & Newington. Conveniently, the Newington Sprint Store has 4g coverage ;-)
I'm in Dallas where hspa + is already available, but using three speed test app the fastest download speed I've been able to get is about 2.5 mbs.

I've been getting 2-3 Mbps tops in Boston, a supposed HSPA+ city, though I haven't tried all over town or in Cambridge. But I was in Chicago last week and topped 7 Mbps in one location. So I just think it varies widely with exact location. Probably all it takes to call a city HSPA+ is a few cell towers with peak theoretical speeds of 14 or 21 Mbps or whatever.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Well, seems it' still not quite up to snuff in Houston. Best I've been able to get is 3.94 Mbps down (I saw that kind of speed on my 3g Vibrant).
After some phone calls and other investigations, I am thinking that their "4g" network isn't as all encompassing as the coverage map shows.
Accessing the testing menu, I can see that I am on either UMTS or HSDPA network, both of which are 3g (according to Tmo tech support).
So, just to make sure my phone wasn't the problem (was already refreshed on the network a couple of time by tech support and even did a master reset) I went down to a Tmo store that was shown to be in 4G coverage area and checked out a MT4G and G2. Neither of them showed connection to HSPA ot HSPA+.
So, dissappointing for sure, but I guess the phone was free (replaced my Vibrant) I can't complain.
You can call tech care with your speed test results and we submit a ticket to have engineers check it out. It's at least worth a try.

Contacted tech support this morning and they are supposed to check out the problem in a wide area.
My wife gets her MT4G Wednesday, so I will have another phone to go by. Obviously if hers sees the HSPA/HSPA+ network and mine doesn't I'll know it's my phone or a setting of some sort within.
I guess it just bugs me since the MYT4G and G2 I checked out also display 3g network connectivity in what is supposed to be 4g coverage area.
I'm in Salt Lake City where the coverage map shows 4g. I have gotten 3 to 4 Mbps speeds before 5 am. However, during the day, I'm getting around 2 mbps or less. My big problem is the coverage. When it drops from H to E, the browsing locks up. It:s like I get 3/4G or nothing. Has anyone else experienced this?
My AT&T Captivate runs almost as fast on 3G networks during the day, but it even gets just under 200 kbps on E. What gives? One of my employees has the MT4G also and find that E doesn't work either.

Going through the build.prop files, I notice in all of the CM builds, that the throughput settings seem to be inaccurate. I can only assume this is because all phones they build for aren't HSPA+ compatible. I'm no expert (as wikipedia is my source here) but according to T-Mobile's HSPA+ specs, we're to achieve up to 21mbps download and 5.7mbps upload on their network. In the build.prop files for the MT4G, our ro.ril.hsdpa.category is set to 8. According to Wikipedia, this category should be set to 14 and at a minimum 10. I say 10 because i'm quite unsure of the MT4G's radio capability and documents I've read seem to suggest the G2 (similar to MT4G) is only capable of max download speeds of 14.4 mbps (which is category 10). However, setting category 14 doesn't seem to impede download speeds, so I set mine to that- just in case. On the flip-side, the ro.ril.hsupa.category is set at 6, which seems to be correct in supporting our max theoretical upload speeds of 5.7mbps. There are other factors that have to be considered as well, such as how many users are connected to a tower at any given time. HSDPA/HSPA+ is a shared data-link, much like your home internet connections. At home, I average between 2 and 4mbps downloads. There are times (usually REALLY late at night or early in the morning) where i've seen 8mbps and once 11mbps download speeds. I'm not quite sure I would have seen these speeds with my ro.ril.hsdpa.category set to 8 as it is in CM because that would indicate a cap in download speeds of 7.2mbps.
Then again, I could be completely wrong and none of this means anything. Just food for thought.

Just so you know just BC the tower is within 30 feet doesn't mean its faster. Actually it will probably be slower; think of the tower as just the placeholder the signal is focused outward and doesn't beam down beside it BC usually nothing is right under it. When I had Verizon there was a tower on my roof at my apt but I had no signal directly below.

the thing to remember when asking about dl and ul speeds on the intercept is also it was cheated in many departments one of those being radio. it's a EVDO rev. 0 not the newer, faster EVDO rev. A radio. This also limits the speeds you'll get compared to your vibrant. As always your mileage will vary based on signal strength as well

When I had a touch pro 2 I was getting MUCH faster speeds. I have researched somethings and I found that we had issues with upload but never saw anything about download.
Is this just me or is something wrong?
Try this fix.

Well for me it is the towers, in south texas i am lucky to break 100k up, right now i am in houston and i am getting about 1.2 megs up on 3g. For some reason the south texas area (mcallen,edinburg..etc) just has very poor 3g speed.

Verizon only allows roaming on their 1x network. This would not help the OP
Also go to the dialer and type *#INFO*1111# then select phone information. Scroll down to network type and see if you're actually connected to EVDO or 1x

For 3G Try This..
It may already be implemented in your ROM, just check again:
Steps:
1. Know the MSL
2. Dial ##3282#
3. Go to multimedia
4. HTTPPD Proxy Port must be 0
5. HTTPPD Proxy Address must be 0.0.0.0
Tried that but it was already set.....
sooo no fix on that

It says I am on CDMA - EvDo rev.A
Signal Strength is -91dBm
Judging by your speeds in your OP, that is 100% 2G speeds (aka 1x). You're just in a dead area - I was getting those speeds until about 2 weeks ago. Sprint upgraded their network in my area.
Its samsungs radio. Cant be the towers. Im in nyc and
My hero gets hspa speeds (well average around 3mb/s dl and 1.2mb/s ul)
Whereas i have to be on "4g" with the epic to even get close to and finally pass that.
I feel they gimped the 3g radio to make 4g seem more special cuz the 4g has relatively great speeds

At home, I can pull 1.2 meg down all day, every day. Down around the Purdue campus, i'm lucky to hit 400 kbps.
I'm in Southeast PA (Philly suburbs). I pull anywhere from .5mbps to 1.2mbps down and .3mbps to .6mbps up on Speedtest.net in 3G. And about 3.5mbps to 6.1mbps down and .5mbps to 3mbps up in 4G.
I did the 3G and 4G adjustments and it definitely made a positive impact.

Hello fellow Boiler! I second the Purdue numbers.
So when you say the radio you mean its a physical limitation or is it something software related?
I guess my next questions is in 2.2 do we get a new radio if its software related.
i live in new york
i jus did the fix on both 3g and 4g
3g: dl: .74mbps ul:.14mbps
4g: dl .95mbps ul:.04mbps
whats with the up speeds in 4g being less than 3g?
About 20 miles north of Austin.
3G, I usually pull about 1.5-2.0mbps down.
4G, at home where I have no real reception (~-90dBm), I get about 4mbps, sometimes hitting 7. In my office at work, where the connection is even worse (~-101dBm), I'll get about 1.5-2.5mbps. When I'm outside and have a good signal (~-70dBm), I'll hit around 7-8mbps, sometimes peaking around 10-11.
My phone's speed through the speedtest.net app at my home got better yesterday. A LOT better. I'm now reliably getting 3.5Mbits minimum, and got over 5 (5.11 was highest) 3 times. The ping is also good, ~125ms. I can find no explanation for these great scores other than "4"g finally being deployed. Anyone else getting better results?
For the record, the best score I ever got at home before this was 2.2Mbits.
upload still sucks... 300Kbits
nothing has changed for me..still paltry download and embarrassing upload.

Are you sure that you weren't accidentally connected to wifi? Well, then again, that wouldn't explain the 300kbps
my area nw of detroit is hit or miss. sometimes i see 5mb speeds while other times i can barely break 400kb.
overall, my atrix works much better/fasterr than my att n1...
I was getting 2.5-3.0 Mbps when I got it and I live in a very small city. Just tested right now and got 3.5 Mbps and then 3.1 Mbps.
You can see the 4G coverage map at att.com/network
So far I see 4G released in greater Los Angeles, Bay area, "northern California" (Santa Rosa area), greater Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Buffalo, Providence (RI), Boston, Baltimore, Charlotte, and Puerto Rico.
I'm about an hour and change away from boston, and I see decent speeds. Faster than my verizon phone.
I'll be in boston next weekend for pax east, I'm pretty excited to see what kind of speeds I'm going to get.
I've always gotten 3mbs down and 300kbs up.

My speeds tested with the speedtest app in Portland, OR (Vancouver, WA) which automatically tests from a server in Iowa (guess that's AT&T's connection point?). Anyways, not the speeds I expect, but I can live with them.

For the record, I was in Santa Rosa, CA (one of their claimed rolled-out locations) for the past week. When downtown, I had great speeds. If you travel 1-2 miles away from downtown, coverage is hit or miss.
I was there for a week testing it and couldn't have been more frustrated. Constantly dropped calls because it kept switching between networks. I wanted a way to force it to stay on Edge while I was there so I could competently conduct business, but both AT&T and Motorola assured me that there was no way to force it to stay on Edge, as that feature was purposely disabled in the phone's settings.
My iPhone had that function and it came in handy when in bad areas. WTF?!
[edit]
Also, these speed tests in Vancouver, WA (Portland metro area) were tested now. Also, I spoke to 3 AT&T reps + 4 Motorola reps while I was in Santa Rosa, CA. As if it matters, but tracking the help from these companies is important at this stage I think
I noticed the same thing this morning. Im getting 4Mbps+ down, but still .3 up. Im just outside Chicago

Maybe this is a good sign of things to come?
I can confirm that at the moment I am getting 3.4Mbps and that with 4 bars not 5 but yeah the upload still sucks
Huh. If this really has been deployed, maybe I should replace my Cingular SIM...
Just had 2 bars, ~200ms 3.4 down, .39 up

Are you guys getting this speed with new APN setting or just the default? I'm in a 4G coverage area but am only getting about 1.5m down.

I'm using the wireless tethering mod in the Dev section. The one where you need the SQLite editor and root explorer.
EDIT: I actually hit 4.06 down, and 0.95 up Haven't hit those speeds since then, but my downloads are looking far better (2 mbps+ down, a little more than .3 up) compared to when I got the phone. (Was lucky to hit 1.5 mbps down, and .2 up)

FWIW, I was sitting in Chicago's Midway airport yesterday (remember, Chicago is a "4G" city based on ATT's map). Well, I was consistently hitting 4.0 - 4.5 Mbps down and 300 kbps up while in Chicago on my Atrix. Latency was around 120 ms IIRC. This was very promising to see.
This morning, I'm back to ~2 Mbps down and ~150 kbps up in Denver (where "4G" is not deployed)

Seeing 5+ Download and 305k Upload.
To me it's not an issue of 4g or no 4g. I just want the speed my wife get's on her iphone. Sitting next to each other on the couch on the same [email protected] network!!!

yeah, I agree. I want the speeds that I had on my Nexus One, but I'm just going to be patient and see if they get their act together with this phone. I love this phone regardless.
