Hi,
I hope I am adhereing to Forum 'etiquette' here.
I've taken ownership of an X10 on Monday, after having experience of the iPhone. First impressions are 'I hate it' in capital letters... I just can't get used to it and have a number of annoyances.
I'm hoping this is a case of user error as some of this forum users seem to think it walks on water, so apologies for this, but a few questions
1) Is there a recommended set up? It is currently configured as it was out of the box
2) Android App Store - I don't want to register for a google email account that I'll never use, do I have to? Can I not access a full app store online via the web?
3) I find the bundled Sat Nav useless... It can't ever find my current location.
4) I really miss the 'notification' of the iPhone, the little red number when you've got a text, facebook update, missed call etc. Timescape does not replace this as it constantly updates and my phone is always on silent 8-6 every day so I'm missing calls, messages and notifications.
5) Recommended apps?
6) Battery Life... I've hardly used the thing today, yet its used nearly 75% of the battery life and I've made 2 calls, a little bit of Facebook and 4 text messages.
7) Any general recommendations?
At this moment, I really am close to sending this back (7 day trial) and getting a HTC Desire or going back to the iPhone.
Thanks in advance
Stuart
1) Is there a recommended set up? It is currently configured as it was out of the box
Unlike the iPhone, Android allows you to configure and personalize your phone as you like, what recommended setup are you looking for ? I have disabled Timescape and use handcent/K-9 for SMS/Email, though I still find Mediascape the best media player.
2) Android App Store - I don't want to register for a google email account that I'll never use, do I have to? Can I not access a full app store online via the web?
To use Googles Android market you do need a Google ID. I have never used mine to send email and it is only used for the Google applications I have downloaded. I only ever registered an Apple ID to be ableto download apps from the Itunes App store.
3) I find the bundled Sat Nav useless... It can't ever find my current location.
Have you got the GPS switched on ? My X10 locks onto GPS faster than my iPhone ever did. Download Google Maps.
4) I really miss the 'notification' of the iPhone, the little red number when you've got a text, facebook update, missed call etc. Timescape does not replace this as it constantly updates and my phone is always on silent 8-6 every day so I'm missing calls, messages and notifications.
These appear in the 'notification' drag down at the top of the screen. I prefer them to the iPhone as they stay there until I decide to clear them.
5) Recommended apps?
See other thread for this.
6) Battery Life... I've hardly used the thing today, yet its used nearly 75% of the battery life and I've made 2 calls, a little bit of Facebook and 4 text messages.
Wait a week or so, battery does improve and should improve further after the next firmware update in the next week or so. The X10 has a much more powerful processor than the iPhone so does use more battery, but having used the phone for a month I actually find that the battery lasts longer than the iPhone, although it does take longer to top-up and recharge.
7) Any general recommendations?
Use it, play with it, get used to it. Android is so different to the iPhone that it does take some getting used to. I personally love Android as it allows me to customize and personalize my phone far beyond what the iPhone allowed me to do.
At this moment, I really am close to sending this back (7 day trial) and getting a HTC Desire or going back to the iPhone.
The majority of the issues you raise above, you would also find on the HTC Desire.
Thanks for the reply, I just wondered whether there was a standard set up that most users used, seems not.
One final question;
There are far too many apps that I'll never use that I don't seem to be able to uninstall... E.g. I've got the Mail app, Google Mail and Moxier Mail... I'm only ever going to want one of these.
I haven't a clue what the Moxier things do full stop mind you, and I don't want GoogleTalk for example.
Is there a way to un-install or hide the ones I don't want?
And can I re-arrange apps, e.g. bring my Facebook onto the 4 icons you have on the homepage.
Sorry if this all sounds picky, I just want the customisation I'm used too.
"Is there a way to un-install or hide the ones I don't want?"
Not yet. We need to be able to root the device. (Like jailbreak on Iphone)
"And can I re-arrange apps, e.g. bring my Facebook onto the 4 icons you have on the homepage."
Press and hold on whatever icon you want to move.

Many of the pre-installed apps are not possibile to un-install. But if you load other mail apps then it will ask you which is the default mail app you want to use. The apps themselves take up such a small amount of space that you don't need to worry too much if you don't want to use them. Moxier etc are primarily used to access work/exchange email. There are many on here who are desperate to delete them but I have no real problem with them.
To add apps to your homescreen, just select he app in your app menu, hold onto it and drag it upto your homescreen. With default Android you have three homescreens to organise and you can add app shortcuts to any of these. From any homescreen, press and hold in an empty space and it will then ask which shortcut/app or widget you need to place there.
My own Android app whinge is that I cannot reorganize the apps in my app page, they are always displayed in the alphabetical order of whatever the developer has decided to name them.
Once we have root (jailbreak for android phones), we should be able to get rid of most of the unwanted apps that came pre-installed.
If those are the annoyances you are talking about, then the Desire won't fix anything because almost all of those "problems" are with android itself.
Battery life isn't much better on the Desire and the GPS is insanely quick to get a lock on almost everyone else's handsets.
I also wasn't aware that the iPhone was customizable...
Use Navigon for GPS navigation. Its by far the best for Android, similar to iGo & Tom Tom. Its also free if you know where to look! ;-)
Also make sure you turn GPS on and off when its used from the settings menu as it can drain battery. A-GPS also helps lock on as it uses the internet to track satalites positions for start up.
Hi guys ... I have just got an off contract Tab.
Love it ... but curiously there is no Social Hub installed. I spoke to Samsung support ... they came back after talking to colleagues only to say their one didn't have it either ... apparently some do and some don't ... and initially he said there is no way of getting it if you don't have it. I said that was unacceptable .. and he is supposed to be getting back to me.
I wonder what else is missing.
Cheers
Paul.
Sorry guys ... I'm sure this could be UK specific ... but I do need to know if anyone else hasn't got the Social Hub installed on their Tab ...
Please let me know if you have / haven't.
Cheers
Paul.
Got mine from PCWorld, it was cheaper than Tesco and TCW and their crappy free class2 16GB mSD and no pushing for simcard contracts or embarrassing credit checks
No Social Hub, No Media Hub either, unless the media hub is the Samsung movies and Samsung Games widgets?
I have the music hub and the readers hub (news and magazines not available yet) plus the daily briefing widget
Also for what I been reading around here the Samsung App store may have different apps depending on you location?
What is Samsung playing at!!
You have samsung movies and games widgets?
Dont have Social or Media Hub either, but i do have music hub..
Hopefully we can get the apks from the US model (if that has the missing Samsung apps) and install them.
Sent from my GT-P1000
Can everyone check to see if their software build is different to this please ?
This is insane.
PCW and Tescos both market the social hub in their own adverts. I was in Tesco this morning and their Tab is the same - no Social Hub.
I don't want to wait until next year for a new firmware release to get something that was advertised at time of purchase.
What do we do to get Samsung to resolve this issue ?
I think we need to get more of a representative view from other UK people ... are we all missing it ? Are we missing other apps as well.
In Apps I have :
Alarm Clock, All Share, Browser, Calendar,
Camera, Contacts, Daily Briefing, Digital Frame,
eBook, Email, FT Mobile, Gallery,
Gmail, Google Search, Lattitude, Maps,
Market, Memo, Messaging, Music,
Music Hub, My Files, Navigation, News and Weather,
Nova, Phone, Places, Readers Hub
Samsung Apps, Samgung Games, Samsung Movies, Settings,
Sky+, Talk, Task Manager, ThinkFree Office,
Video, Voice Search, World Clock, YouTube
-->
No Social Hub, No Media Hub (are you sure there is one .. I have Music Hub).
Samsung Games and Samsung Movies aren't really apps or widgets - just short cuts to Samsung Game and Movie purchase websites.
We need to ensure we have a proper breakdown of what is missing and somehow approach Samsung to resolve.
Paul.
Picked up my Tab last night from my local PC World contract free. I seem to be missing the Social Hub also. Grrrrrrr.
No calculator?
I cannot find the calculator. Am I being a dunce?
Update
Just got off a the phone with a far better Samsung chap in the Apps group. He spoke to his tech chappie who explained that Social Hub isn't a standalone app like the Reader and Music Hub. It is basically the integration through the Contacts app which is activated when you go into Accounts and Sync and add Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. This then updates the Feeds and Updates Widget (which is too small in my view).
In the contacts ... go to groups tab ... scroll down to your facebook or twitter account and tap the All contacts below it ... on the right you then see all your contacts for that social network ... then if you tap one of those contacts you get a display focusing on just that network with your contact on the right showing their details and last message. Finally if you then click on their profile you get a facebook viewer or twitter viewer to show you those message. A bit clunky ... but that is the 'Social Hub'
As regards the missing media or video hub ... I think that is the 'Samsung Movies' which is just a website like iTunes you can order movies from ... not the fully integrated offering that Music hub is for music.
So ... perhaps it's just really bad marketing making out it was a separate app.
I'm pretty happy.
Aside from 2.2 on my HD2 which I just play with, this is the first real Android device I've played with.
The market place seems pretty good ... lots of free stuff that is actually worth having.
Kindle reader will never replace my new Kindle ... but is good if synced and I don't have the Kindle.
eWallet Viewer is great if you have eWallet for PC / WM which I do. You can't do updates yet ... but it does sync from the PC.
Real Calc is quite a nice basic scientific calculator - I'd really like something like Omega-One 1-Calc, myPlayer (BBC iPlayer ... mainly for the downloads for later watching), Google Translate, Google Sky Map, Google Streets, Google Earth, Yell.com (if you're in the UK). I'm sure I'll find a lot more
Have fun guys.
Paul.
Thanks for clarifying on the social hub, as I had the same issue.
The Samsung.co.uk site also advertises 2 premium games being installed: Nova and Asphalt 5.
On my version from Carphonewarehouse (contract-free), only Nova is installed and other game is missing. I called Samsung, and they advised to swap it around! I did, and new one still is missing the Asphalt game (probably from same batch, with even lower serial number).
Send an email to Samsung past Sunday and still no response. I guess I have to call them tomorrow...
Asphalt isn't preinstalled, you have to download it from Gameloft site.
A guy from Gameloft said it in a youtube video (it was in french)
Seeking suggestions on some good widgets/apps. My interests are social networking, music, ..the norm.
Also, what do you guys think about the "Twitter for HTC Sense" widget vs. the "Touiteur"?
For music services try pandora or slacker. For players, poweramp, mixzing, or meridian. For song id shazam.
Some people like Foursquare.

Double twist is a good music player and tweetdeck is good for social networking

PowerAMP is the best for music players. Hands down. I bought the full version today - the trial is full-featured but expires after a while.
I use Peep (the HTC twitter widget) but I don't do any tweeting I just follow stuff and check up on it a few times a day. Definitely get Handcent; it's a great SMS replacement app that is really customizable. My favorite is getting it to split messages after 160 characters by word, so there's no word being cut off, and you dont get an annoying message from Verizon about how you can't send over 160 characters to carriers other than Verizon like you do with the stock app.
For web browsing, I'd pick up Dolphin HD. I like it better htan the stock one because I can exit out of it and end the process - for a while I was having problems with the stock browser getting my phone hot and using CPU while I wasn't using it.
Definitely get Appbrain. Then:
On Appbrain, you can install an app called Car Home released by Google. It replaces the (awful) stock "Car Panel." Add it to your phone from the web site and then install it from the application and open the Car Panel app and choose Car Home. It's much more customizable and it doesn't use GPS all the time whenever it's open.
Obviously, get Angry Birds.
Good Morning is an alarm app that I like. It starts playing music and then tells you the time, day, weather, and if you purchase it, your calendar appointments for the day. Get the free version and then upgrade if you want multiple alarms and the calendar appointments.
Hope this helps enjoy your phone.

so i have no need of it now but the top line of apps that keep track of what you have opened just keeps getting longer.. anyone now how to clear that out yet?
also if anyone is looking for a password app to bock a few apps from the kids accidently buying apps or getting into your email the app "app protector pro"(also has a trial) is one of the few that work... some on the amazon store do not block at all and some are buggy. this one i have been using since yesterday and it has several good modes. only thing with this is i had to side load a different facebook app(touch client for facebook) because the "app" for amazon just goes to the browser. and this will allow the kids on theirs without logging me out or getting into mine.
.i know people are having problems getting the regular market place in. i stopped trying and just started using blapkmarket side loaded for my apps.
also im finding kobo to be the best ereader app to side load that seems to give the best results.
hope this helps anyone with the same issues
The Recent section is one of the more annoying aspects to the UI in my opinion. First it should need to be SO LARGE... and second, it would be nice to just turn it off. Many of the "icons" displayed are terrible looking especially recent web pages etc...
The other is the lack of control buttons being available without an extra step. Coming from a Android phone it takes some getting used to. I suppose someone who has never had a droid based phone might think it is okay, but I would guess not.
To clear apps from your carousel: Settings->applications->Filter by all Apps->AppManager -> Clear Data
to clear watched videos from your carousel. Settings->More->Applications->Amazon Video-> Clear Data -> Go back to the home screen click on one of the other tabs like books and then back the the home and it is gone.
-D
worked thank you
Now we need a setting that just makes the carousel disappear completely.... most likely a different app launcher though.
Symbian Sxx, Windows CE, IOS, Android, etc...
I tried them all but didn't find the ... how to say it.... yes cheeriness & easiness which I found in my new WP8 devices!
but yet, I still feel like I'm left behind, because all of the missing Apps like (Instagram, Whoshere, Tumblr, Keek)
It is true that whatsapp has shortened the distance but it has its flaws like:
1- can't read long messages
2- no broadcast
3- can't save videos to my library
4- slowness
5- can't forward messages to recent contacts
and other things...
I tried to find if whether these application are coming to WP8 or not by contacting the official websites and twitter accounts but no luck!
if anybody has any information about that, please share it.
Thank you,,
No Luck either ...
Yea, I have tried to log a couple of questions with WunderList and SpringPad on their forums/email and the response is working on it. Wunderlist does have an app in the WP8 Store but it's not available/compatible for my phone.
Flipboard pls
I really would like to have TapaTalk (because BoardExpress, ForoPlex and ForumTalk just don't work for me), and TeamViewer.
I would really like a SiriusXM app. That and Google+ integration (just like how Facebook and Twitter are integrated).
I would also love it if the phone had separate "audio profiles". For example, if I plug in a pair of headphones, all the volume should automatically adjust to the settings I had it on last time I had headphones plugged in. Then when I unplug them, the volume should all revert back to what it was set to before.
Also, also a Sonos app would be fantastic!
Snapchat, Instagram, Draw Something 2, official 4Pics1Word, Dropbox, Starbucks, University of Arizona app, etc......
I can tell you that my next phone won't be a Windows Phone.

While I am not trying to change your oppinion, why do you need the official "4pics1Word" app? It's not a multiplayergame and there are multiple similar games on windows phone ("What's The Word" for instance).
Also, there are dropbox clients for windows phone as well. There's boxfiles for dropbox, there's Filebox and there are others as well. And they work. Why do they not suffice?
Draw Something 2: I got fed up with Draw Something after 2 weeks. What does DS2 do better than DS?
Even Though I do not use instagram I can see how people might want that. Same goes with snapchat for me. I just do not see the use-case for me (appart from sexting), but those are two big names that are missing on WP, alternatives (like Lomogram or Picit) don't cut it because they are incompatible with the already existent userbase on android and ios.
I miss
