just a hunch, but I can't see people paying an extra $5 for this feature - so I can't see sprint (or qik?) charging people.
edit: actually I think I read something about $5/year for qik premium come to think of it, but I could be wrong.
hmm, the link says monthly charge...but via PayPal? Not everyone have PayPal account, and how is that gonna work?
Is Mobile Video Chat free?
Mobile video chat will be a premium service with a $4.99 MRC (monthly recurring charge). Billing will be via PayPal.
not to worry, no ones going to pay it once they realize they can use Fring on the EVO to chat with skype. in the words of a fellow xda-er, BAM!
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/27/qik-charging-5-monthly-for-evo-4g-video-chat/
Yup, if it's free via Fring, or any other apps that I am sure will appear in a short while, Qik will have to have some sort of fantastic advantage over the freebies, feature-wise.
'tards...
if they do, i sense a lawsuit. i wouldn't be surprised if a lawyer didn't push a class action lawsuit due to a bait and switch. they've touted this as a feature and never once made mention of the charge.
just a thought.
Yeah, but they said that Wifi Hotspot was gonna be a "feature" and never heard a word about $30 per month till the official kickoff.
They can charge if they want.......who is really going to want to vid chat with their phone.... when I first saw this vid chat thing i said cool....but then quickly thought I dont want people seeing me when I talk to them I might want to pick my nose or something else.....
IMO this is just a gimmick like when I first got my MB I did a few ichat sessions(video) and quickly never used the feature again.

video chat is a staple in my house, I'll definitely be using it. it is how my extended family stays together. I'm sure usage will vary with personal preference.
This rumor has been debunked by Gizmodo. They got a reply from Qik:
http://gizmodo.com/5550572/qik-video-chat-to-cost-5month-on-sprint-evo-4g
"Well, there're a number of rumors flying around that the 2-way Qik mobile video service will require a premium subscription. We wanted to clarify what that really means. Firstly, rest assured that the core Qik service that lets you communicate live from your phone to other phones, web and desktop will be FREE. Yes – this means that the core capability of doing 2-way Qik video chat will be FREE for Sprint EVO 4G users. The subscription fee will be for some advanced premium features that we are working on, which we will be announcing on June 4th – the day the amazing HTC EVO 4G phone launches.
So, tune back in on June 4th for a complete list of features of the new Qik along with the optional advanced premium features for you to enjoy!"

Sprint Epic 4G Update Brings Faster Uploads Tomorrow

Forum member dshoem01 on Sprint's community forums has promised that the carrier will be releasing an update to the Sprint Epic 4G that will be coming tomorrow, September 30th, and will be rolled out over the air over four days. The firmware update should fix the slow upload speeds that Epic 4G owners have been experiencing, which caps their uploads to a measly 150 kbps on Sprint's 3G network. According to the forum post, "Good news - an update will be released tomorrow 9/30. It will be rolled out over a 4 day period so not everyone will get it on day 1. I will have the standard MR information (fixes included, rollout schedule, etc) available tomorrow morning and will post it in a new featured thread."

The only one I've ever experienced was the 3G upload. and it just isn't a big deal for me right now. Plus, fix is in the works.
People who have the market download problem didn't clear their cache before flashing a ROM. That's no one's fault except the person who flashed the ROM. The only time I've had anything fail in the market is when I was actively switching from wifi to 3g or vice versa. Download restarted fine with no issues.
GPS, sorry, just don't experience them. I apologize for those with them, but I just have not had an issue getting a lock when I'm outdoors. I travel to different stores everyday for work, and I've never had an issue navigating there. GPS/Maps way better on this phone than Hero, which frequently put me on some side road instead of the current one, and no one *****es about that phone's GPS issues.

I didn't have GPS issues at first, but eventually I started to experience it. The biggest problem though is the battery drain that can basically kill the whole thing in 4-5 hours.

Seriously, this update needs to fix the 3G battery drain that is killing this phone. Fixing the GPS would be nice too, but upload speeds are a distant third on the list of stuff that needs to be fixed ASAP...

This does not uncap the upload speed, it just doesn't route your internet traffic through a proxy anymore, after you change this.
What is the PRL version number for the updated PRL?

Well I changed mine to eliminate the proxy and with 2bars of signal on 3g I got a ping of 145 with speedtest app also it now shows a server thats actually near me . The same server when I test the 4g speeds! That could bed the reason for a lower ping though

This is from a post regarding the ESPN app not senting text to Sprint customers anymore. Read the update at the bottom:
Update: And just like that, we get a tip about what's really going on. Here 'tis:
It's not a "money thing" in the traditional sense. They didn't give us a real clear picture of what's going on, but ESPN offers these messages free of charge to ESPN.com members, and Sprint is going to start charging their customers for each individual text message, regardless of having an unlimited messaging package. ESPN really isn't going to put up with it being "free," yet not free.

The way I read this article, Sprint is charging the content providers, i.e. ESPN, MSNBC, CNN, etc. more per message sent than before. Not the individual subscribers.

You are correct. I found this post on another site by a user named Mustangboy88 so all credit to him for the info.
Just found this article over on the Sprint Forums and it basically shows what happened today.
http://http://www.mobilemarketer.com...orks/9330.html
This was already going to happen, but obviously none of us knew. This is not the only service that it going to be affected. This is all on Sprint's end. They basically want and have raised the price on the companies that send out texts through their databases. The update above is not exactly right and really should be rephrased. They are not charging "us", but rather, charging the companies that send out the mass texts to subscribers of that paricular service.
T-Mobile tried the same thing last September. And VZW tried it in 2008 with a .03% increase for content related text services.
Here
This is something that is happening across all the carriers. I think it is just getting blown up because ESPN is a big name to throw out and really affects the masses.
I am like many above. I like getting my texts, instead of refreshing apps to get the scores. Not to mention that ESPN did a pretty good job getting the scores out pretty quickly. I installed the scorecenter app and hopefully it will fill the void.
Sprint speaks
In response to inquiries on the topic, Emmy Anderson, Minneapolis-based spokeswoman for Sprint, gave the following statement:
Sprint is partnering with many industry-leading companies to form the core of Sprint’s Solution Enabler Program.
These solution-enablers have direct access to Sprint’s APIs that are exposed through the new Sprint Services Framework.
Solution-enablers will also provide many of their own value-added services to help a customer deliver an optimized solution that meets their needs.
As the first wave of APIs, Sprint is exposing services such as LBS, SMS, MMS, geofence and presence as part of the Sprint Services Framework.
Many services will be provided for free such as presence, while some services will require Sprint to charge solution-enablers, aggregators and developers a fee to recoup our costs of delivering these services.
Sprint is not increasing the messaging or data fees consumers pay
Specific to SMS, Sprint will charge a per-message fee to aggregators and solution-enablers for SMS programs.
This charge is a cost-recovery measure designed to allow Sprint to continue to support the billions of SMS messages that are sent each year as part of mobile marketing campaigns, alerts, et cetera.

i never suggested that you use PDANET to download 50gb a month with your torrents, however there have been people served with tethering warning emails who have not even exceeded 2gb so please refrain from making bold assumptions, you could get caught using barnacle with a low usage just the same as pdanet except for that barnacle does not have hide tether usage as a feature
and yes i agree there is a downside that you can only use it on one device at a time and only certain devices, but everyones needs are different, if you are only using your pc or laptop and want take extra precautions to not lose your unlimited plan then use pdanet over barnacle, i personally only need my laptop connected, and realistically you could create an adhoc network with your PC that you tether with if you would like multiple devices connected at the same time
please if you are not here to contribute, just go away i dont want this thread clogged up with a ton of misinformation from a bunch of misinformed people with poor reading comprehension, i was just making a suggestion here, if you dont like it stfu and gtfo

Because tethering Apps are shortcuts for APNs really. So the tethering counter counts data going through a tethering APN. Therefore any tethering app that is a APN shortcut (MyWi) would be counted because it goes through the tethering APN.....

Alright, then cite your sources saying that people on Android phones are being caught for unoffical tethering and that AT&T can actually see it on Android phones....
btw that picture was for another forum. I got it from my friend when this whole thing started...

I don't know how they do it that's the point, no one does, att has not disclosed how they do it in order to avoid to having people figure ways around it, so since we are all just guessing at it, I suggest we err on the side of caution hence why I created this thread to inform people, not to attract trolls like moths to a flame, and for the record I try to maintain my usage around 2gb to be safe because u could be right although I believe I read somewhere that someone with low usage was sent a warning as well so that is where my doubt comes from, truthfully I haven't even looked into how pdanet is hiding tethering usage exactly or if it actually works, but like I said I believe in erring on the side of caution
I tethered my Atrix to my iPhone 4 when I was working on it at school, probably no more than 20MB. Got a letter in the mail, a call, and the text. I, on average, use around 6GB/month (non tethering). They're just mad that my $2500/year isn't good enough for them. Sorry, let me give you 20 of my unborn children.

Ill leave it at this:
My guess...
AT&T is working there way down the list of people with high data usage or whatever they look for and they are emailing them.
If that is true, my time is coming up.
I'll remember to PM you when/if I get an email from AT&T regarding unauthorized tethering usage.

What method did u tether with?
Here is your proof:

http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...locking-tethering-apps-in-the-android-market/
There are a million ways to get around this of course: market hacks, downloading the apps from other sources, side-loading... they're included with most roms... blah blah blah.
Just bringing this to your attention in case you were trying to d/l it from the market and it's not showing up. Now you know why
Just checked the market and looks like you're right. No PdaNet. No Easy Tether. Can still get Easy Tether on Amazon's app store however.
This will only effect the NOOBS.

This will only effect the Noobs. We can easy download the tether programs to our computers and then copy them on to our android phones.
I knew this. I just ingored it

Why do they give us data hungry phone and then want to limit our usage?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Technically we agreed not to use these, but still. Getting around it is so trivial, and yes, this might trip up a few noobs, but chances are if you're that nooby you wouldn't have a need for, or even realize that, tethering is an option.
Add that all up, and it seems like the only thing this move can get you is bad PR/karma.
You may as well be "cool","allow" it, and play the "other carriers try to tell you how you can use your phone and limit your access to certain apps" card, cause it's happening either way.
Sprint can and will cancel service with high data usage.

I use my PC and go to http://market.android.com/ and login to google account.
Easier to find apps that way anyway. Plus it shows all that I've ever downloaded if I look at my library.

Easier to find apps, yes. Shows your previous download library, yes. Once you click on an item that is no longer offerred, it will tell you its no longer available for download. You basically stare at the husk of an app it once was. But it doesn't tell you that til after you click on it to view its details.
Meh i never used tether apps i use the official hotpot hack

I like that one better. Its not an adhoc connection like the tether apps, but an actual hotspot that your computer actively looks for and can become a preferred network. Its just kewler.
Doesn't log your data usage though, only downside really.

Really only applies on your phone, as in, the data your phone is using. Tethering is a whole new realm. Sprint can tell if you're tethering or using your phone, so if you have a large amount of data through tethering, they'll flag you for it.
I think they're putting limits on tethering plans now, somewhere around 5GB or so I thought.

They can make you pay for the use of *their* tether app, but I'd like to see evidence that they can tell if your using the likes of a rooted phone with Wireless Tether. I think of this situation the way I viewed using a wired/wireless switch off your home broadband ISP back in the day. For me, Charter only allowed one registered MAC address to the cable modem, and there was some FUD spreading around that you'd get "busted" for using a switch to provide service to multiple computers. Of course there was no way to tell unless they get really invasive. Similar deal here. Hopefully restrictions on phone tethering will seem just as crazy in a few years.
I'm using TWC isp over wifi right now & its not showing up? WTF how is it that its not showing up over wifi?
Edit. I see the one by open gradin. But not the one by Muller

Actually they can't. The data logger only kicks in if you pay for the Hotspot app. They can't tell the difference if you are tethering or downloading tons of movies to your phone.

Actually... I decided to use my Epic as a wireless hotspot about 3 days ago and was didn't find any wifi tether apps using my phone so I used my PC 'cause I knew I'd downloaded one before. (wifi tether). Went through my library, found it and pushed it to my phone.
(cool story bro)

You forgot "I think" in the beginning of that sentence - you can't "know" something that is false, so that would be the only edit that would make your sentence accurate. Oh, but you'd still be wrong, just to be clear

"Unlimited data" only means that you aren't going to get billed for going over x amount.
It doesn't mean Sprint just has to lay back and take it from someone who's costing them money to have as a customer, tethering or not. They reserve the right to tell any of us to beat it.
