TmoNews has an article saying HTC will most likely upgrade some handsets to Gingerbread. Assuming the MyTouch 4G is on the list, will rooting the phone cause any problems with getting this update? If so I'll probably wait till the update is released before rooting.
Yes, I believe rooting will prevent any future OTA updates on your device; however I'm not sure waiting is a good idea. More often then not, a ROM will probably be available quicker if you just root now, then waiting for it "officially".
U won't got OTA updates if your rooted. But if u are rooted, u can have it before it's officially released for the device anyway.
Its a race actually. We don't know if the ROM will be available before the official 2.3 release. My money is on a custom ROM but only time will tell.
GO DEVS GO!
If you root, Custom ROM would be great. Plus, it gives a bit of time for people to try out the new Gingerbread and see what can be improved by the awesome Devs!!!
I had a question about this too. I backed up my phone with RM with a fresh wipe and everything so my data (when restored is pretty much right out the box) I only rooted to get rid of bloatware (wish I knew about titanium first though but its okay since I have a backup already of the system) But what I wanted to know is... if I unrooted and restored from the backup I have... then could I get an OTA update or no?

Why both with anything else?
You should add a "I spend most of my battery restoring specimens from my extensive library of frozen ROM's" option, lol.

Well right now I'm just rooted, and I'll do the full root on my replacement phones later tonight or tomorrow; flash a custom rom when a good aosp or 2.2 comes out.
Just got my Evo 2 days ago. Stock for now. Would like to root, but need to read some more first. Might wait for Froyo to come out first
I wish I could vote twice. my wife and I bot got Evos and I rooted and installed Damaged on both of them. BTW battery life is awsome with the new update and radios
Fully customized Fresh ROM .5.3 with GatorBoots theme and inverted splash1.
Flawless.
You forgot the ones who are waiting for the Froyo upgrade to root when available. So Stock with plans.
stock. rooting sounds a bit risky right now but i would like to get rid of the Sprint apps, facebook, Sense UI, etc. waiting to see if HTC/Sprint will deliver Froyo in a timely fashion as promised.

What good will it do when HTC will just increase their security even more to keep people from doing custom ROMs?
Stock Evo, not planning on rooting yet... I like Sense UI but hate all the Sprint Apps and all the auto-starting apps that I never use.
I'm on stock, but I plan to root and flash roms later after I get my new phone and source/froyo is release.
Rooted and love the custom rom especially the multi touch keyboard

I said when I got this phone that I wouldn't mess with it cuz it was already stupid fast compared to g-pa G1. About a week went by and that went out the window.

stock 1.32.651.6 with unrevoked root app
i need nothing else right now as wifi tether, vpn connection and shootme works. things may change when froyo comes out though. i'm not applying the latest ota until unrevoked has an updated root version for it (that works!). lol
Once rooted, even if running the stock ROM with su permissions, will I be able to even receive OTA updates (Froyo)? Or be solely responsible for flashing the firmware myself? Had a G1 before this but I ended up rooting it after all the updates to 1.6 had been sent out, so I'm unfamiliar how the world of rooting and OTA's collide. I would prefer to do as little modding as possible, even though my vibrant is much more of a high end phone than the G1, it got to a point where I was constantly flashing my phone with new mods and hacks and roms, and it got kind of frustrating having little things wrong here and there. I got my adfree so far, thats enough to make me happy for now.

I'm sure right before the update becomes available you'll hear about it and you can always unroot ...
if you install the OTA, you will download the OTA (which is a NON ROOTED update) therefore making your phone get UNROOTED. now, you WANT do avoid installing the OTA's because they will unroot you, but since you aren't running a custom rom on your phone, you WILL get the OTA from t-mobile, you just have to force urself to DECLINE the install (if you want to keep root) you can update to the OTA release if you want to get rid of root, but if you wait a couple days, someone will have hacked a rooted version of the update.

or you can just re-root...correct?
most of the time when an ota update comes out they patch the exploit used to root... this probably will not happen with the galaxy s series phones... 1)Samsung intends to sell 10 million of these phones... 2)It wasnt an exploit, it was left open to begin with
I'm not even sure if T-mobile cares. They allow their customers to post information about rooting their phones on their own forum.
I would post the link but I'm not allowed until my account has been verified.
oh lol, the way i worded my post was inferring that the new update would have "patched" the way to get root, but your responses make me think otherwise lol.
Better safe than sorry if Root is important to you. Wait for a guinea pig to update and verify if root is still an option or not.....
I was wondering the same thing too, but I have deleted most of the bloat ware that came with the brand. So after the ota and unroot, will these programs be reinstalled?
And if I did a factory reset would it restore the bloat ware and unroot the phone?
I got my adfree so far, thats enough to make me happy for now.[/QUOTE]
Is add free really that important? If you don't want a 3mm bar on your screen buy the app. I click the add every time I open an app that is free. If you don't then all the dev will make apple apps... Just kind of selfish if you where to ask me.

Rather then making another thread about this, id just like to ask it here.
i know this has been asked about a million times, but i need to make in a million and one.
im rooted, clockwork recovery, mobile ap installed, and JAC kernel. I do not have any custom roms installed. Because of the custom kernel, im guessing that will keep me from receiving OTA?
I stumbled across a page a few days ago, and someone said that if you take the 2.2 update through Sprint, you'll lose your root (I know this part) but he also said you won't be able to root in the future.
Is this true? If so then I'd definitely prefer jumping on a 2.2 ROM and using that instead of receiving the update via Sprint.
I would like to use the Cyro ROM or whatever, but I don't like the idea of not having my FM radio or 4G etc etc.
Just use Fresh 3.0 (based on 2.2) then you can keep all the HTC/Sprint stuff you want.
Any official updates - past, present, and future - will break root. If you are rooted and don't want to lose root, be patient and wait a couple days for the dudes here to put out a rooted ROM without having to wait for a root exploit. When updating to an official ROM there is a likelihood that there will be no root exploit to discover and thus you will be S.O.L. when it comes to regaining root. Patience.
There are currently several 2.2 ROMs based off of the official leak (but it's supposedly not the final build). Look for the rooted ones by netarchy or whoever.
just give it a few more days. the official v2.2 should go out tomorrow. just don't accept the OTA update.
if you are planning on rooting your phone then do not accept any Over The Air updates (yes OTA can jak ur root). the official comes out on 8/3 so give it till the weekend and you should have updated ROMs using the latest greatest. anyone updating to the leaked version 'should' be ok but will prolly be updating again once their ROM gets the official updates. save yourself the stress and wait til the dust settles...unless ur big into the geeking on your EVO...then just make sure your nandroids are good.
Cyanogen will be nice. however, due to that teams philosophy on using opensource code you may not see 4G as fast as you will with some of our other devs (godspeed to madcoders fingers). I'm probably going to load the Fresh 3.0 ROM later this week...once the dust has settled. i miss my 4G.
If you want to keep root, DO NOT download anything from sprint, only download from XDA and the like.

OTA has been known to cause:
Anal Seepage.
Watch.
Right after someone takes it, they are gonna come here wanting root...
If you do OTA, either wait for Root, or SHUT UP!
Don't whine, don't b!tch, and don't say you didn't know!
I am not in hurry to upgrade to 2.2, I don't mind waiting. I've had my phone two weeks and I've barely rooted it and it's still not even setup the way I want it yet because I know I'll be flashing soon anyways.
Looks like Fresh 3.0 will be the way to go, I'll just wait until a bit after the 3rd so I have the final build.
I downloaded the update just so I could have the file I don't want to actually install it. Anyone know where the file is downloaded too so I can pull it off my phone?
1. can I accept it if I'm on the stock rom?
2. if not, will there be a comprehensive update from the dev community with new radios and the updated rom?
We already got the update go look in dev section for glacier gingerbread leak posted by faux123, not teampokerface

This wasn't always true in the past on older phones, but on the MT4G and you're rooted, you won't receive OTA updates even if you're on the stock ROM.
so in other words i have to unroot to get the ota update when it comes out?

no, those are the exact words.
The new OTA will be GB MySense, we've had it for over a week. We now also have GB Sense 2.1 built specifically for our hardware. So in other words, everything tmo has to offer and SO much more is already posted in the dev section. The pecking order of AOSP>Sense>MySense pretty much means that it takes FOREVER to get updates, so official OTA's are like celebrating Christmas in July.
I rooted my shift so i can use wifi tether. When, if htc releases 2.3 for the shift will i be able to load it or do i have to use a custom version? I rooted using the instructions on this site. Thanks in advance.
To be able to use the HTC drop you should ruu first, but I would just stay rooted it offers far more perks then being locked down
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
Don't load the ruu. Load a stock rooted rom. It may be a long time if at all before an official update is rooted.

Maybe im an idiot but if i thought if you were rooted and let it update with an official update i thought you were screwed thats why i said if you want htcs unroot if not flash one of the htc leaks which is out gingerbread with the new sense so it will get an update

As far as I know, any "official" update will break root.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
Usually someone will post the update but remove only the crap that breaks root. Wait until that is available and use it. It will be tempting to load the official update when you see posts around the various websites mentioning that it is going out to people BUT DON'T DO IT!!! You may forever lose root....as it seems the Shift was fairly involved to root the first time around I wouldn't hold my breath for the next update to get rooted very soon, if ever.
Also, based on the EVO 3D apparently having an encrypted bootloader I wouldn't be surprised if this is the last HTC phone I ever own unless they make a future Nexus phone.
