[Q] Format SD in Android Before First Use? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

So, when getting a new SD or just while using one in Android in General. Should you format it with the PC, or with Android?
I have my stock 16GB Class 2 from my HD2 running Android, but I just got a 16GB MicroSDHC Class 10 I plan to use now instead.. Should I just copy everything over and use it, as it's a brand new card. Or is formatting before First use a good idea? Also I've read it's best to Format in a Android Device as it will format it for best Android Compatibility. Whats everyone's take on this?
Thanks!

[Q] Need help with Micro SD

Hey guys,
I have been running Android on my HD2 for a few months now using the stock 16gb class 2 and had no real issues. I purchased a Patriot 8gb class 4 to replace the stock because I need it for another device.
I have tried formating it 32kb and 64kb, default allocation size and nothing has worked. After transfering the android files and running haret a few minutes later I get stuck on the boot screen. I tried a fresh install of various android builds and keep having the same problem.
Can someone tell me the correct way to prep this card for my HD2 to run android? Maybe a utility or something.
Link to the card's product page: http://www.patriotmem.com/products/detailp.jsp?prodline=4&catid=16&prodgroupid=78&id=730&type=15
Thanks
Give SD Formatter a try in quick format mode.
http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/
It formats FAT32 with 32kb sectors, and has worked well here with multiple class and size MircoSDHC cards. That said, 16GB Sandisk cards are cheap now. Maybe consider picking up another one and ditching the Patriot, if SD Formatter does not fix it up.
Best to all,
R

I'm sorry for you... That card is a junk! I also have that one and after many hours of frustrations end up buying sandisk 8gb class 4 for $15usd.
I have done all suggested ways to prep that card. If ever you will be able to boot, expect for minutes of lags.
I would recommend what has been said before, just re-format the SD Card.

[Q] Resize WP7 partition

I'm running WP7 and, from the the SD, Android.
Now, I'm using an 8Gb Sandisk SD, 4Gb used by the WP7 unknown file system and 4Gb by the Android FAT32 partition. Since I put a lot of stuff in WP7, it's getting closer to be full sooner and sooner.
Is it possible to resize the partition - let's say 6Gb WP7/2Gb Android - without losing data? Has anyone of you already tried doing it?
Thanks!
There are many reformatting and partitioning applications out there, but they wipe the data of your sd card. Since its on the sd card just backup(move) all the info onto your pc.
Hope this helps
If I helped please hit the thanks button!
i have tried an tried, but each time i inserted the sd card then wp7 didn't recognize it untill i hard reset the phone and wp7 destroys the partition info again and all of the sd card is assigned to wp7 again.

bump up the same question.

[Q] MICRO SD FORMAT/PARTITION? OR TWO Cards?

I have watched and read for some time here and been putting the android switch off because of time. Now I would like to try to run a build or two from my MicroSD. I have seen several places that a formatted SD is best. I have tons of WM's apps stored there so I reluctant to format over them.
I would like to be able to dual boot with my current WM6.5 and android.
I thought about getting a second Micro SD to mess with but if I had to swap sd card it would be a real pain. I have a Otter box for my HD2 and just getting the cover off to reset it is terrible.
Can I partition my Micro SD for wm and android? or does it have to be two cards?
Since you are staying with winmo and running android from SD, there's no need for partitioning the card,,, the android build simply lives in a folder called android on the SD card.
Partitioning the SD card is for nand android that uses apps2sd.
If you want to format the card,(or if you decide to partition) just copy everything off onto the PC, format (or partition) it, then copy everything back.
I have all my winmo files and folders still on my card, with no issues (running nand build with partitioned card,,, the android stuff and winmo stuff all sit quite happily together with no interference)
Samsamuel,
Thanks for the reply. That is good news. I know that the class of the card makes a different in performance but should I even try it on the class 2 16gb card what came with the phone?
I'm using a 7 or 8 year old 2gbsandisk, no idea what class it is but can't be that great, and I have no problems, no lags, nothing to indicate any performance issues.

Why my HD2 android won't start with my SD card?

My HTC HD2 works with my Transcend 4 GB microSD card, but it won't android won't boot up with my 8 GB Verbatim microSD card. Do I need to format it or something? Thanks!
Are you sure you have the correct set up ? (Files are copied to their destinations)
Try to format it to FAT32, and try again.
I`have just formated it to FAT32 and still the same problem. What files are you talking about?
PS: Sorry to bother you with "stupid" questions, I am pretty noob in this
I have read that Verbatim SDCards can cause problems in the build; booting or running, SanDisk is your best bet, but you may still be able to get it running,
Im not a dev; just brought SanDisk as a result of this,

It depends on many factors. Which Android Rom do you want flash, does this need Ext 3/4 Partition on the SD Card ? Do you have flashed the right partition size ? Read the installation instructions of Rom you wants to flash, there you mostly find all information.
Are you talking about NAND or SD? If NAND, make sure the ext partition is set up correctly, as this is where a lot of the apps are stored. If SD, then I would assume you know how to install an SD build so it could be a problem with the SD card being incompatible as alex.odell.2011 said.
I've had similar problems sometimes with my SD card; my HD2 wouldn't boot unless I took the card out then put it back in once it was booted. The only thing that I thought might cause it is something CWR related on the SD card, since I had used it in my Hero and Droid 1 as well to flash ROMs to them. It was a class 4 16 GB Sandisk, if that helps at all.

32GB Transcend card not recognised

hi, anyone using a 32GB Transcend card?
win 7 was ok with a 2GB Sandisk and an unmarked 4GB card, dual boot with android.
are some roms better than others or is there anything else i can do or is that just how it is?
tried full clean format of card etc.
did you try insert card on already installed WP7 or you flashed ROM with card inside?
you cant only insert card... you need to make hard reset or flash ROM to use new card...
http://www.wpcentral.com/first-offi...-certified-microsd-card-announced-sandisk-8gb
same with my 16g Transcend, WP7 doesn't recognize it while flashing, what I did was use an 8g Sandisk then just made an image copy of that to the Transcend then it is OK, but during the flashing it wont see a Transcend card
you guys need to realize it's not always about the sd card that causes problems. the particular wp7 rom flavor causes incompatibilities. also, you can't copy existing wp7 sd images and expect it to work. just make sure the sd card is formatted in any of the std windows/dos formats...fat16, fat32, ntfs.
also, i've never encountered sd issues with 4 different brands ranging from 8gb to 32gb sizes of sd cards using yuki rom, but these same cards have issues when trying to flash pdaj, ansar, and hd2o wp7 roms.
BTW
if I flash WP7 using the Transcend it wont work
if I flash Android using the Transcend it will work

that goes without.saying. android doesn't have such strict requirements as wp7. as i stated in previous post...other wp7 roms other than yuki rom seem to be prone to sd card issues.

hi,
@dxdy: as i said in my post, i dual booted with android on 2 other different cards ok (by imaging and resizing and adjusting partitions)
bad thing was losing half my sd just for win 7. and i didnt like the idea of swapping cards.
also, the battery issue does not seem to have been bottomed out with its appalling standby times.
thanks though to hjhjhj for that info. that was just what i wanted to know. interesting but strange that different roms see the cards differently.
locking an os to a removable storage card has to be one of the worst features i have seen.
at least with our HD2's we still have other options.
will fire up win 7 again and give it another go.
