Glad to be back! - EVO 4G General

Well, I am one of the Evo defects that switched over to the epic when it came out because of the keyboard and the super amoled. 2 months later, I am back to my evo. I forgot how truly sexy this phone is and with the development community as strong as it is now, I know I made the right choice.
I found myself never using the keyboard on the epic and the super amoled lost its wow factor after a while. I also had the horrible keyboard wobble that drove my OCD bonkers.
Just wanted to say that I am now another proud evo owner!

meh..........

Want a cookie???

Sure, I would love a cookie.... but seriously.
I wasn't trying to get any praise, just wanted to express how I thought the evo was a superior phone (at least in my opinion).

Just did the same 2 days ago

Welcome back!!

Welcome back to the greener side.

Yeah dev community for this phone is sick. Don't worry about all the negative replies. I was honestly expecting Cheesynutz to post some useless post in here but I guess after reading this he wont.
Welcome back man.

How was the epic? I never touched one.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

The epic wasn't horrible. After getting 2.2 on it is was actually pretty good. I just had battery life issues, plus gps issues and some other slight annoyances. I would still recommend the epic if you need a keyboard, I just like the Evo a lot better.

Epic fail

I was inspired by a post in another thread stating that nobody posts when times are good....
So for the record I want to say that the Evo rocks and I have nothing bad to report.

I have had a couple hiccups along the way but very happy with this phone so far.
I will agree with you guus, and one up you.
I am very happy with my evo. However, I am happy there hasn't been an evo 2 announcement.... YET. I love seeing new tech, but the Evo is still worthy of holding the Sprint thrown for a a few months a la Apple. A one year life cycle is great. Just my opinion though.

I absolutely love my Evo. Been in smartphone heaven since June 4! But a Evo 2 announcement wouldn't hurt. Never worried about yearly cycles. If they announced a Evo 2 tomorrow & started selling the next day, I would be in line. Well that is if they give us some major upgrades. The Shift imo isn't a upgrade.

Ditching the Epic for an EVO

I'm still within my 30 days, so I'm going to the Sprint store tomorrow to trade this Epic in for an EVO.
I have played with the EVO quite a bit (couple of co-workers have it) and my reasons for trading it are:
1. I hate the clunkyness associated with having the type of keyboard that the Epic has. It drives me insane! I am not a gamer, I don't need the keyboard. I <3 Swype.
2. The EVO feels solid. Partially because it doesn't have a keyboard like the Epic, but it seems to be better built, physically.
3. The quality of display difference really isn't that drastic. Hold the two side by site. I think the difference is often exaggerated.
t;dr: The Epic is like a shiny, pretty car with a great motor, but it physically feels like a cheap plastic body and it drives me nuts.
Ok, we care why? This belongs in the EVO forum where people well cherry you on. Otherwise, you just look like a spoilsport. So you love the EVO, go enjoy it and let us enjoy our phones.

It would be fine if it was based in any sort of reality. The display on the Epic is in another class entirely than the EVO display. To say they are similar is a lie.
Also, if you don't like the form factor of a hardware keyboard sliding phone, why the hell did you buy it in the first place?
Lastly, no one cares about any of this because they are excited about getting froyo on Monday.

I can't say that the difference isn't obvious, but it's not "better enough" with the Epic for me, personally, to enjoy a phone that feels as clunky as the Epic does because of the shoddy keyboard mechanism.
I'm not here to flame, I personally don't have an interest in which phone you prefer. But as others have said, if you prefer Swype why would you even get a phone with a hardware keyboard?
I agree the EVO has a more solid feel, but I attribute this to it being thinner, and not having the slider.
Disagree about the display, especially outside. Are you sure you had your brightness turned up?
Anyways, enjoy your EVO...

Regreting htc evo shift?

Nobody take me wrong but at times I kinda regret not going with the evo just because its forums are fast moving and really active. like I said none take me wrong because I love my shift its so smooth. I thought all android was like this but I'm proud to say my phone runs android smooth. I thought this phone was going to be a hit like the evo. I'm hoping in general things take off. Anyone having the same feelings about the evo shift?
Sent from my HTC speedy using Xda Premium
Development is going fine, most of the development goes on behind the scenes and there are a lot of non-public builds out there.
Most of the action is in the IRC right now. I'd say about 1/2 of the builds are on the irc only. Some of the best builds are on the irc, or released early with bug fixes in irc. Things have taken off, but it's mostly behind the scenes.
I don't regret getting a shift at all =P
In no way do i regret getting a shift
No regrets here! My girlfriend has the evo so I've played with it since it came out and this was my upgrade from the hero. I love this phone! Lol
Sent from my PG06100
I'm rooted but still running the stock rom. The phone runs smoother than the Evo (especially when running live wall papers) and battery life is much better when the phone is in use. I'm not blown away by the phone like when I first purchased the Evo, but I still think the Shift is a better phone. I thought I would miss the bigger screen of the Evo, but the sharpness of the Shift's screen almost makes up for it.
All I'm waiting for in a custom rom is one that has toggle switches in the pull down notification bar.
My perception of the Shift is that development does move slower than I had hoped/expected. That's just my perception coming from the Hero. (Not slighting those doing the good work.) However, my "regret" comes from personal tastes.
- I don't need a physical keyboard and the added bulk has started to bug me
- The keyboard slider isn't as tight as I feel it should be, and makes the phone feel a little more cheap that I'd prefer.
- Small design elements bother me (Chrome trim and circles, blue...)
The main "regret" feeling now comes from the Nexus S 4G that's rumored to be announced at CTIA. Likely selling the Shift to pick that up if it's released relatively soon.

Did you remove the plastic from the back? If you did, that's probably why. I left it on and it's pretty tight.
Ahh me too!i wish i would have waited for the nexus from sprint but my heros charger port failed so i had to get something fast.=/ im have faith for the shift development.the hero rom development was amazing!!it made me love the phone.Im just looking forward to what everyone can do with the shift also im hoping in a camcorder mod or something like the nexus one did =] im sure it is possible.im starting to get into cooking some roms and everything but i just havent gotten it all down yet.my shift makes me wanna learn though!alot more than my hero!and the keyboard does feel a bit loose after a while but ive always had that problem with phones with slide out keyboards.i just hope it doesnt mess up like one of my old phone that caused the screen not to be touch able anymore.Dont Regret!give it time!

I'm very happy with my phone. It's as if HTC remade my Moment awesome.
^ Shift Faced
The Shift is still a young platform, give it time. The EVO has had almost a year head start on the Shift as far as development goes, so it's no surprise that the community would be booming over there.
I too had this same question when it came time to upgrade. As a Hero CDMA user, I enjoyed a fantastic, active community, even for a phone that was based on ARMv6. If a phone of that caliber STILL has a community as vibrant as it is, the Shift is SURE to foster a wonderful kitchen of ROM creation and hacking. We've already got some excellent folks on board (I'm looking @ you NFX!) and more will come as people upgrade their phones.
I much prefer HTC builds to the likes of Samsung. The slide on my Shift is taught and feels solid - I too left the plastic on the back / edges. When the time came to select a phone, I tried everything at T-Mobile and Sprint and the only phone that would have enticed me away from the Shift would have been the G2. That second gen Snapdragon / Adreno 205 rocks my socks. So fast, so smooth.
I love this phone.
(ps. I also did not want a physical keyboard, but I'm falling in love with it, ESPECIALLY when ssh'ing into a box or using the terminal emulator)

Leaving my Evo. Parting is such sweet sorrow.

About to leave to go get my Epic 4g Touch using my dads upgrade. ( I'll have mine in a month to get a new LTE phone ) Just wanted to thank everyone that helped me learn about android by answering my stupid questions and for being a wonderful community of people. Gonna miss my Evo alot, but I'll still have it around for random business such as PC remote and whatnot. oh no.... I told myself I wouldn't cry... *sniff sniff* I LOVE YOU GUYSSSSSS

I switched to the NS4G after my Evo **** the bed, and I still miss it.
The Nexus has been far more reliable and has a slick form factor, but I have large hands and miss the brutish size of the Evo. Not to mention the dev support - with the nexus, you get your choice of AOSP, modded AOSP, or the single Sense 2.1 rom.
can u please elaborate on that pc remote thing?
thanks
that is the biggest reason I rooted my phone. I was getting tired of it and still have about 8 months to my upgrade since Sprint did awway with the yearly upgrade on the primary line. The ability to flash different ROMS has given it a totally different look n feel, improved my battery life and brought about new love for my phone. i have decided im not upgrading now until I can get a 4G LTE device and have 4G service in my area.
Having similar feelings. Will be getting something new very soon. Everything I know about android I learned from my Evo and this community. Pretty awesome.

It sets different OOM values. Essentially telling androind when to kill processes if they're bogging down the rest of your system. That is my understanding from reading, if anyone cares to correct, I'd be more than happy.

I just wanted to chime in to give credit to the DEVs for keeping the EVO bad ass for so long. I got mine the day it came out (almost 2 years ago, which is an ETERNITY for a technology product) and I would still much rather have the EVO than my wife's I-Phone 4S. Every time I get bored with it I find a new ROM and it's like getting a brand new phone for the donation I make.
