**warning** you can get your phone to a unrecoverable state - Epic 4G General

**WARNING** I was following the 2.2 Leaks, and after about a week on the DK17 leak my EPIC would no longer do PRL/PROFILE/Firmware updates, and would complain about INTERNAL ERROR.
I went back to DI18, and still no luck, even with a factory reset.
I took the phone into my local sprint store, and they couldn't revive it either.
The Manager was VERY nice to me and asked that as long as I don't ROOT any more, he'd replace it under TEP this ONE time.
This is a WARNING TO ALL: You **CAN** get your phone into an UNRECOVERABLE state, that even TEP will NOT cover you.
Please be forewarned.

First of all; wrong section..
Secondly.. DK28 is out. So dk17 is old news.

First, I dont agree. u could always odin ur phone back to stock d118 and take it in and say it happened by itself that will remove root and all evidence of tampering.

I went from dk17 rom and modem to dk28 rom and modem and have no issues with my PRL/firmware, etc.

If a mod wants to move it, fine.
This is also possible with the DK28 leaks. My problem STARTED with DK17, but persisted with DK28 as well as going back to DI18.
The bottom line is with ANY NON OFFICIAL UPDATE you can get into this state, and this is fair warning to ALL.

NOT TRUE. The Carrier / Equipment department CAN tell what you've been running. This DOES NOT remove all evidence.

It doesn't happen all the time apparently, but it IS possible. My phone is proof.

ok im on stock 2.1 rom custom kernal/theme and all that good stuff, when i try to update firmware, prl and profile it just keeps loading, no error but doesnt do anything but load is this the same thing that the OP is talking about?
Im sure if i odined back to stock totally i would have no problem doing this prl stuff.

I had tried that too, no luck on MY phone.

And on top of what I said earlier all people who root their phones should kno it can void your warranty and insurance contract if u have 1 and if they dont know that they probably need to learn that lesson themselves like u did.

No, I was getting a specific pop-up with INTERNAL ERROR or UNKNOWN ERROR.
I would still be careful. ODIN'ing back to DI18 in MY case did NOT fix it.

Did u odin your phone back to di18 md5 tar or just flash through cl0ckwork?

Very true, but until this point, I had NEVER had a phone go into a truly unrecoverable state that would need the manufacturer to fix it.

[Q] Failed to boot 0X1000

Hi everybody, this what happened:
I tried to flash my atrix with Atrix 1.26 Retail SBF through RSDLite.
After that it shut down and when i try to turn it on it says :"Failed to boot 0X1000" then it shuts down again. It doesn't even give me any option.
For the record, my phone was up to date (i got that wifi only system update by att). Also, this phone is unlocked and I have no warranty with any carrier.
I hope I didn't brick it.
Please give me simple solutions if there is any. Your help will b very much appreciated.
Thank you so much.
i'll let others break down the news to you..
Sorry bud, but I believe you now have a nice set of glass upon to look at.

Can't believe people are still doing this with all the warnings in the forums.
You tried to SBF back to 4.1.26 (Froyo) on a bootloader unlocked phone. You now have a very expensive reflective beer coaster!

This error also comes up with soft bricks which you can fix as you gave options to choose from and can recover. This guy has no options.

People are being helpful...by telling you sorry. If you need it for work, you'll probably just need to go buy a new phone ASAP. Like others have said, there are plenty of warnings and instructions on what/what not to do on your phone. Unfortunately, you missed those. Hope you can find another phone for cheap...
You have a hard brick, never try to downgrade. Nottach was able to fix his because he got a brick by upgrading, and he was lucky enough to figure it out. Downgrading on the other hand ruins your device, every time

We are helping you, by telling you that there's nothing that you can do. Your phone is hard bricked. There is absolutely no way to recover from a hard brick, period. You need to replace the phone. That is the reality, and there is no getting around it.
I was running CM9 on my Atrix when my digitizer went bad and I got a dead spot. I submitted it for warranty and before I sent it I tried to put it back to normal. I did something wrong I guess and ended up with a different boot error (didn't even give me an error code the screen was black unless I plugged it in I just got the NV flash thing). Anyways, I sent it in and the same phone came back completely working with a fixed screen. I think when they get it they hook it up with a factory cable and flash it back to stock with the SBK, which we don't even have access too. Just send it in for warranty saying it has software problems, and I can almost guarantee you it will come back working.

Possible he does with motorola. OP there is a tool on motorola website to see if its under warranty. Maybe give that a shot.
Bro do some reseatch that error message is a soft brick I believe I ran into a similar issue when I first roote it last year
Just thought I would weigh in that I received this same error code after an attempted SBF flash of zomgunlock-lite.sbf, and thought all hope was lost, but then I found this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27158667&postcount=153
The instructions there helped me un-brick my phone, and I'm a happy camper once again

Well Kies has my S4 all up.

Not sure if the phone was previously rooted or not, but now when I turn it on it says firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please elecet recover mode in kies and try again. I tried an odin and it says FAIL (AUTH) any ideas?

Are you on MF3 firmware. And have you read the several threads available about the problems with Kies and ODIN with MF3 and any sollutions there might be?
The "pinned" threads in the general and Q&A sections are a good place to start. Also make sure to read any threads about MF3. Good luck.
If you are not on MF3 firmware, I still suggest you read.

Did you buy the phone in this condition? Because I can't imagine how any thought process would allow someone to do ANYTHING to a phone if they didn't at least (and I mean at the very least) know what firmware the phone was running. And actually, much more than that needs to be learned before the phone is ever touched.
So you bought it from someone like that?

Try manually putting the phone into ODIN (download) mode and then manually cancel out of it (volume down button...I think). and see if it boots up. There is also a thread in the general section about "a fix for KIES", you might want to check it out. Also, apparently Best Buys stores can reflash MF3 phones if you ask them nicely. All of this might help if you were on MF3.
If you were not on MF3, try to ODIN back to stock. Only do this with MDB or MDL firmware.
Good luck.

Mine working
Just to let everyone know I flashed to stock firmware MDL and when I rebooted it had a software update which I did without thinking which MF3. I then rooted with know problems and at this point I used goo manger and attempted to install CWM bad idea. Should have read but didn't but I read for a week trying to figure out and try everything I could think of no deal. I saw that people talked about going to best buy so I went to one close to me and system kept showing device not found the person told me he couldn't do anything so I called AT&T who wanted me to travel clear across the city to have it flashed or replaced. Decided that was to much so I went to another best buy and his system said not supported. He called Samsung and they wanted me to send it in or take to there Samsung repair center which was only couple miles away which I did. They had no problem flashing it funny thing they used Odin which they have the files for. I tried to get the guy to give me a copy of the software but he said he couldn't oh well I tried but it does prove that there is Odin files for it just have to wait. I know this is long post just thought that maybe it will help others.

I'm posting on XDA for some help/suggestions on what i should do. (please note I have no custom recovery)
Also I saw someone say they put their phone on T-Mobile and took a T-Mobile OTA to replace the MF3 and then bootloader unlocked the T-Mobile update.
Edit: I do have the SGH-1337 sim unlocked currently running on airvoice going to make the switch to T-Mobile sometime this week.
Don't mess with the pit file. Best case, it didn't do anything, worst case I'd it messes up your phone worse that it is. You never mentioned what state your phone is in. Did it boot? Boot into download or what.
I think your best bet is best buy. They seem to be able to flash the mf3 firmware. It's basically the same thing jtag would do and it's free.

[Q] Did I just turn my G2 into a masonary block?

So, I think I've bricked my LS980. Was rooted runing the stock rom happily when I stupidly accepted a LG UIUU? update. Phone rebooted into TWRP recovery and thats all it will do. Didn't make a backup yet because as I alluded to earlier, I'm stupid. When I power off from TWRP it asks to Install Supersu to gain root yet that does nothing. When I boot into download mode it says rooted on the bottom. I have no idea where to go from here. Is there even an option? I'd love to go back to stock and never mention this again... Any idea? Mine would stay in download mode at 0% every time until I retried the instructions for the lgflashtool. I was extracting the file into the LG flash tool folder using Zipeg but once I tried 7zip it seemed to work. Once again sorry if this doesn't help at all I'm writing this from memory (hence being so vague about the instructions) and on my phone. Hope you get it fixed!

update killed my phone

Hi All,
So about an hour ago I searched for an update knowing that Verizon was supposed to be pushing out a security update today. It found an update and installed it. After reboot, the phone will not start. The splash screen shows the unlocked lock and the word "custom." The next screen says "Start Up Failed - Your device didn't start up successfully. Use the Verizon Software Repair Assistant on a computer to repair your device. Connect your device to your computer to get the Verizon Software Repair Assistant." More specifically, in the corner it says "Custom binary blocked by SECURE BOOT (boot.img)."
The Verizon Software Repair Assistant doesn't pop up when I plug it into my computer, and I can't find it online.
Ironically this is the ONE phone I have not actually tinkered with so yeah... VZW said they will most likely have to ship my work a new phone for replacement. I can't expedite that since I'm not authorized on the work account. Is there an image for Odin floating around that I can use to flash this myself? Help me please!!!
You did tinker, you tried to install the wrong/a bad file.
Odin to stock, there's a thread in one of the S7/S7e forums with the Verizon stock files.

where did you "find" this update? unless you went to settings and hit software update, you probably downloaded an incorrect update for the wrong phone, which soft bricked it. needs a re-flash.

I did in fact hit software update and let the phone search for the update itself. I have no reason to lie about this. I'm the first to admit when I screw up. I see someone has the firmwares on his mediashare in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65764861&postcount=14. I just requested access to the file I need.

UPDATE: I was able to get the phone back to life by doing a recovery boot (power up + home button + power). Previously, I was doing it the LG G2 way not using the home button. The phone booted all the way but now it still says I'm "custom." I'm holding off on using Odin to flash the full stock firmware because I've read that it won't reset that custom thing. Thoughts on Odin?
If you flash a factory image you should be good. Just make sure it's for the variant you are using.
Another update: I spoke with a great VZW rep today and explained everything. She posted an androidcentral forum link in the ticket where a woman had the same exact thing happen to her on her GS6. She also put in there that my valid is still valid. So that's that and I'll just keep using the phone as is now.
I just got the pop up for the OTA too...anyone had luck with it?

Same here. Appears to be some sort of security updates but no details. It does not include the March patches from Google.
Maybe you are rooted while upgrading your device into a new firmware? Some of peoples have problems with this.

If he is rooted he'd be the only rooted Verizon S7, so I doubt it.

Definitely wasn't rooted. I still suspect some goofball engineer at VZW in my area posted the update before it was signed properly or something like that. The phone has been working great though. It was a worthy upgrade from my LG G2.
