put one in. can't seem to find it.
do i need to format or something?
If you are connecting to the tablet via USB mass storage, you will initially see the internal storage of the device. On mine there is then an 'external_sd' folder (link) in that volume that re-directs to the microSD storage.
/sdcard/external_sd
It's a really irritating way to mount the internal and external storage actually. Buy hey, what can you do?

man i must sound like a real noob but how in the hell can you transfer files from a sd card or usb drive to the iconia they both show in applications tried drive mount they wont mount tried es file explorer see usb drive and sd storage when i open them there isnt anything in them i have clockwork installed and rooted with iconia root i can install other roms if i put sd card in a card reader to tranfer files wont even see in my computer i see storage but nothing in there either any help is appreciated driving me nuts only in xoom rom can i see storage on computer actually shows 2 drives
In file managers you'll find them under /mnt/ The sd is actually under "external_sd" and the usb is something similar like "usb_drive"
If you have been saving things so far they are most likely in the internal storage which is actually mounted as if it's an internal sd card (/sdcard/ or /mnt/internal_sd i think).
Hi Guys,
When I put an SD card in my phone and plug it into my PC, windows only sees the SD Card. I hit "USB mass storage" option on the phone after plugging it in, but I still only get access to the SD card.
When the SD Card isn't in the phone windows explorer will see the internal phone storage. I just can't get them both to show up at the same time.
The other weird thing is when I plug the phone in, it unmounts both the SD Card and the Internal Storage (in order for the PC to use them). However, when I remove the phone from the PC, I have to manually remount the internal storage. The SD Card will automatically remount.
Any ideas?
Thx.
Hello. There is one thing that doesn't really work well by me: if I plug the phone (usb) and choose the mobile archive function, windows 7 detects 2 thing:
- space volume of 12 GB (the phone?)
- MICROSD32 (the name i used when i formatted it), which is 32 GB
The problem is that not the whole microsd is mounted: from the file browser on the phone, I can see that the micro sd is there, and then there is a folder named 'external_sd', and THAT folder is the folder that is been mounted on windows.
This doesn't allow me to read/write data files on the sd (application files, savegames, and so on)....because it doesn't mount that part of the micro sd.
Is there a way to fix this? I am always forced to copy/cut/paste things from the phone file browser...to get to the micro sd root...
And BTW i have root access now. if that can make a difference with this.
I just noticed that I am wrong, and BOTH volumes belong to the same micro sd....the mobile storage 12GB is the root of the microsd, while the other 32 GB volume....is also the microsd....but the external-sd folder....why this partitioning?????
external_sd is where your 32 giga micro sd should be mounted, if you're browsing from the phone.
You should have checked the option 'usb debugging ' in menu/applications/development'. Then connect the phone to pc and you should see the both internal and external storage.

It doesn't happen. I have usb debugging, but it mounts the micro sd as two volumes : 12 GB and 32 GB...which is impossible.
Also browsing from the phone, the mircrosd (sdcard) has an internal folder named 'external_sd'....weird.
Maybe I should reformat the card from the phone? I formatted from the computer before putting it in the phone...but it was completely empty.

exactly, it is not a small problem....i'll wait until someone else knows more than we know...
I installed App2SD (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.co.pricealert.apps2sd&hl=en) on my head unit in hopes to create symlinks between my internal and external storage to free up my internal storage to install more apps. In process of doing so it needed to partition my external SD card. I selected FAT32 & ext2. After it rebooted I found that my SDCard, USB Flash Drives, and External SD card were no longer mounted. Infact they dont even appear at all in ES File explorer as if they didnt exist. Looking in storage, I do not get an option to format my SD card or USB drives. I took them to my PC and confirmed they are still FAT32. I reformatted my Micro SD Card from my PC and although it was successful it did not bring any of my external devices back.
I cannot mount the SD card.
Errors Im getting
The above is the original mounting point of my External SD Card, taken from External 2 Internal - it is no longer mounting and External 2 Internal no longer even sees it when I scan for additional devices.
This is what appears to be currently mounted.
Additional troubleshooting I took.
If anyone could help I really need it because I cannot reinstall redmod without the device being able to read the external SD card, I also cannot listen to any of my music or access any of my apps that were moved to the SD Card. Also can anyone show me how to properly create symlinks using that app without losing all my mounts?
New android version Marshmallow has a feature to use microSD card as internal storage.
When Marshmallow detects a microSD card for the first time it asks to chose Portable or Internal storage mode.
If you choose "Use as portable storage" you will use it as before. You can save your photos, videos, some applications or their data,
backup/restore your phone, etc. and you can see your files if you take it out of your phone and connect to another device or PC, as usual.
But if you choose "Use as internal storage" and click "ERASE&FORMAT" button at next screen,
then your microSD card will be formatted as ext4 and encrypted. You will loose everything in your microSD card and it will
become your only internal storage. Now, If you take it out of your phone and connect to another device or PC, it will not possible to see your files
since it is encrypted. Your microSD is usable only with your phone.
Than, what is the advantage of using microSD card as internal storage?
If your phone's real internal storage very small (ex: 4gb) and you have trouble installing new apps then you may put a 32 GB microSD card and use it as internal storage. Then your internal storage will be 32 GB (Not total of 36GB).
It will act as your phone's internal storage.
Disadvantages?
microSD card used as internal storage is useless out of your phone since it is encrypted. You can not use it taking out of your phone and putting into another device to transfer your photos, music files, zipped ROM files etc.
It will not be visible as external storage anymore.
Phone's real internal storage is not visible.
So,
If your phone's real internal storage is not too small and especially if you want to use your external storage as usual, there is no need to use a microSD card as internal storage.

But its still encrypted, so that won't help I guess. Also once you flash your phone or something, the contents won't be available anymore I think. It's just a guess though, I don't know how it is decrypted and all.

It seems to be not possible out of your phone by anyway since it is encrypted.
I don't not know whether it is possible to extract encryption key from phone and decrypt the files using this key but this shouldn't be possible because of security reasons.
No one desires access to the important files in the sd card if it is captured by any one else.
