Android 2.3 Gingerbread does not fix Arabic :( - Android Software Development

For anyone hoping that Android 2.3 would natively support Arabic/Persian/Urdu, it doesn't seem like it. I just downloaded the API and loaded al-jazeera up in the emulator. Here's what comes out

Unless the released version is different from the API, it's not. The only thing changing the locale does is to change the time to Arabic numbers. This is with the Egyptian Locale enabled.
Though I very well could be wrong so if someone gets Arabic working in the emulator please let me know.

i guess arabic will be supportes in the official version ,, since it's said so in the site !

Whyyyy?
What is the problem really? Why is it so freaking difficult for Android to fix this, when apple supported right to left languages all the way from the start.
I was looking forward to 2.3, but it seems like it is not as good as I hoped.

No official Arabic support and no paid apps in my country (Kuwait) are holding me back from getting any android phone, I really want the nexus S though.

My guess is it is a very low priority item due to user base.

can you try to change the font?

Smartphone growth in the MENA region is huge. Really Google could adopt one of the third-party solutions for Arabic and incorporate into the base Android architecture and this problem would be solved, but they don't.

its done by changing the font in "/system/fonts/"
before that i think you need read-write permission

This is in an emulator in the Android SDK and I was testing to see if there is native Arabic support. Obviously that is possible on rooted phones but only if there is a third-party developer to create Arabization libraries for the specific architecture of the phone.

This is bull crp.
Just saying.
This really pisses me off. I am thinking of withdrawing my vast moral sponsorship of the Android platform until they start taking my language seriously.

joining letters was ahope but not the big deal
indeed RTL support must be built in views and layouts like swing

The problem is not arabic fonts, they are there as you can see on the picture, the problem is how to display them, they should be displayed from right to left and not from left to right, also they should be linked together like handwrited latin and not disconnected like printed latin.

Provides the Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm. The algorithm is defined in the Unicode Standard Annex #9, version 13, also described in The Unicode Standard, Version 4.0 . Use a Bidi object to get the information on the position reordering of a bidirectional text, such as Arabic or Hebrew. The natural display ordering of horizontal text in these languages is from right to left, while they order numbers from left to right. If the text contains multiple runs, the information of each run can be obtained from the run index. The level of any particular run indicates the direction of the text as well as the nesting level. Left-to-right runs have even levels while right-to-left runs have odd levels.
http://developer.android.com/reference/java/text/Bidi.html

Google took alot from samsung in Nexus S n 2.3 and probably they'll take what samsung have done wit hthe arabic as well "No RTL" :\

please can see you my topic here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864048
this way can showing arabic chart correctly

Waiting for the official release
I think it will be fully supported in the official puplic release (I optimistically hope that) because this is just an emulator and many files are missing compared to the ROM.

Someone on an early Gingerbread build on the Eris took a screenshot, having the same problem.

The eris build is based off the SDK so it would have the same problems the SDK might have.

SwiftKey Beta is out (IME)

What is SwiftKey?
SwiftKey brings the future of text entry to smartphones. It uses TouchType’s breakthrough Fluency™ technology to predict the next word you want to type, before you even press a key.
Fast
With SwiftKey, your next word is predicted with such incredible accuracy that a third of suggestions are right first time and usually you won’t need to press more than two letters.
Accurate
SwiftKey uses advanced error correction, meaning grammar and spelling errors are a thing of the past. Typing with SwiftKey produces text you can rely on, in a fraction of the time it takes on a regular QWERTY keyboard.
Intelligent
SwiftKey doesn’t just predict regular words – it learns as you type and remembers how you write. As words and sentences are chosen over time, its Fluency™ engine creates a dynamic understanding of your writing style to boost the accuracy, fluency and speed of prediction.

But is it really that much better than the HTC keyboard? I'm not a fan of Swype to be honest. I like tapping much more, especially since I don't always use standard words, which can be annoying with Swype then.
Download:
1. Search for it on the android market.
2. Or use this QR Code:
Thanks for posting this.
I have to say Ive just tried this and it seems very good. Might be my favourite so far out of the Stock keyboard, HTC Mod, and Swype. Time will tell though. Only wrote a few texts with it, but it does seem quick.
So far, I quite like it.
I wish it would stop inserting spaces after punctuation and word selection though.
Other languages than English are supported ?
I like it a lot, also because it can learn from your sms history and HTC IME mod is extremely poor in dictionary.
So far it's working ok, but it needs some fine tuning in the interface and it allows just one language for now!

Was blown away by first message... typed a full sentence and only had to press the first letter of a few words and space bar the rest.
Have been using BetterKeyboard for a while now, but SwiftKey immediately outdoes it's prediction and easier to select other words. Hopefully this takes off and skins are developed etc... keys felt a touch smaller than BK.
edit: "I love you." = , [space], [l], [space], [space] - still has the same meaning

Not that I know about. I uninstalled it quickly after. I still love the Sense keyboard more.
With Sense you can type something like:
gey, egat ere yuu diing ronught?
It will actually manage to fix it to:
hey, what are you doing tonight?
Well, as long as there is no multi language support for this keyboard I will have to switch back to sense too. But I have to say the the Swift keyboard is the best keyboard I tried until now (besides the original keyboard).
Greetings,
Thomas
it' cool very cool.
But it's very boring that add a space every time.
If I want to add a three point I have to cancel the space.

New swype beta what do you think?

I think its much improved it looks better, feels better to use, voice input and alot more accurate.
download the installer from your phone browser from https://beta.swype.com/android/get/ if you are a beta tester to get the latest version...
We're happy to bring you version 2.15.56.14870 of Swype BETA for Android. We've made some pretty fantastic upgrades with this version, including adding some new requested features and addressing some reported bugs. Read on for details...
First and foremost - We've resolved an accuracy issue that was introduced in the last beta update. Refer to the changelog for more detail on this critical fix.
Second - Swype BETA for Android now supports Double-Tap-to-Edit! Swype choose a wrong word? Just tap the word twice to bring up the word choice window, pick the correct word, and the cursor will return to wherever it was before. It doesn't get any simpler! See a
video demonstration
, and check out our other tips and tricks.
And Third - Swype BETA for Android now includes a Voice-to-Text button (available for QWERTY layouts ONLY)! You MUST have Google Voice Search pre-integrated in your ROM for this feature to work. We wish everyone could access it, and are working to adapt our existing code to support versions of Voice Search downloaded from the market, as well as other voice search providers, in our next update.
Users with access to the beta can begin downloading the update immediately by pointing their device's browser to http://beta.swype.com/android/get
Some additional details...
* You'll see much less of that pesky "Hidden Word" popup (though it will still show up once in a while)
* Names from the address book will no longer muscle out all other words for top spot in the word-choice-window.
* NEW SELF-UPDATING INSTALLER! This update includes a new installer with some long-needed feature updates.
o The new installer will self-update when you launch it, if necessary, so you'll NEVER have to uninstall and re-install the installer via our website. Just keep the installer on your device, and launch it periodically - If needed you'll be given the option to update it with just a click.
o We've converted the installation app from an "application" to a "service" so that the Android activity manager and other 3rd party task killers won't end the install process prematurely. That means no more rebooting, swap file, or voodoo witchcraft required!
o The installer now includes a repair function. If for any reason Swype stops working, simply re-launch the installer and you'll be guided through the steps necessary to get Swype running again.

Seems to have solved the issue I had where I would need to switch input methods on a restart to be able to use it. Very happy to finally have French support.
I think that although it is a pretty painless installation, the method is a bit peculiar, I just wish it was more streamlined.
Fixed those annoying pop ups.also runs much smoother. Was almost considering switching to the gingerbread keyboard.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
The new version is better, but still likes to pick words from your contacts. I really dislike the pop up which at times drove me to use HTC's keyboard. So far now i can definitely say the accuracy is back compared to the pain it was before.

[Library] Color picker (Open Source)

Hi guys,
I don't know if this is the right forum, so please forgive me if it isn't
During the development of Minimalistic Text I came across the lack of a good color picker view for Android.
In the first attempt I used the one from the samples (The "Ring").
The second attempt has been to integrate this one and add the possibility to change the alpha channel.
In the end I decided to build my own.
To let you use this color picker and - if you like to and are able to - improve it, I've extracted it into an Android library project and made it open source.
It's hosted at Google Code:
http://code.google.com/p/devmil-android-color-picker/
The code has almost no code comments. I will add them if I have time.
At the moment it is localized to German and English.
Please let me know what you think and write me an email if you want to contribute.
Thanks
Devmil

I guess you never found hxxp://code.google.com/p/color-picker-view/ which has been around for a while now. It got an optional alpha slider too.
But on the other hand it doesn't support HEX input or RGB sliders like yours.

no, I haven't found this one. But the one I have used before is quite similar. I added the alpha slider to it.
The main difference for the new selector is the choice between the three input methods.
Working on project created ColorPickerPreference.
Shared it here github.com/attenzione/android-ColorPickerPreference (sorry, can't post links)
Why not RGB sliders or HEX input field?
because regular users will not use them. this is our project group opinion
OP Thanks, this is just what i was looking for. I wanted a color picker where you could choose a color like in photoshop but also input exact values for the more advanced users. Is it alright if i take a look at the code and see if I can get it all on one tab. Ill probably just end up using your stock one though.

Thank you!
When I was programming for WM in c# I had occasion to need a colour picker, but never really found one and couldn't be bothered to create it myself (the program was intensive enough by itself not to want to add something like this to it). Now I have transitioned to android I'm sure that I'll need this at one point. so thank you for sharing this! I might never need it (although I'm pretty sure I will use it), but if and when I do, I'll be damn thankful that you put in the effort!
So again, thanks!
-edit-
I'm having some trouble getting the code...seems I need some kind of version control software, but I wouldn't know which one (Mercurial?). Could you add a source download (.zip or .rar) for me to download so I could use (link/include) it in Eclipse? Or am I really being a noob at this (I have successfully used other libraries in c#, so I'm not a total noob ).
On further inspection: I can access the sourcecode, but I guess I just don't know code.google.com AT ALL. I can create a server side clone (don't want to do that, I think), and I can go through all the files in the source and copy/paste to local files, but do I really have to do that to integrate this? Could someone tell me (or point to a tutorial) the best way to get all the code local so I cn use it? Or is the best way just to check out the source online (source file by source file) and copy/paste it into my own project as and how I need it?
Sorry for being a noob, but as I mentioned, I come from c# and have zero experience with code.google.com. I know enough to get everything into my Eclipse project through copy/paste, but there must be a better way!
PS: on winxp sp3, eclipse 3.6 (android 2.2, targetting 1.6, but that's beside the point, if I'm at all in the right ballpark )
Awesome library! I hacked it up a bit, adding a recent colors list, turning it into a activity, and added it to my app https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rj.pixelesque
Amazing Work
Thanks so much for the color picker, this improved the function of my app if a big way. Thanks YOU!
can i use this in my paid app??
Yes, you can use it for whatever you like. Including paid apps.
a stupid question but how to include it in my code??
You can download the source code using a Mercurial client.
I have pushed a compiled library into the downloads section. So if you don't want to have the source code and build it on your own you can simply use the library.
thnx for the help and the color picker
I've just checked the download section, but there is no compiled library. AND is there the chance to have a sample app, how to use it simply?
noob question
op , how to use this as library after downloading ?

I don't think that's possible with android platform. You can try using FontForge on windows/mac to get that thing.
It actually worked for the most part with some only imperfection being some characters were too tall and resulted in a cutoff. Like the 'g' would lose the bottom hook a bit. I've tried some apps including what you mention I believe. It was more complicated than I can handle.
Added support to include Bold/Italics/BoldItalics if available.

If you apply/change a theme, fonts will disappear from settings and you can't select them anymore. When it disappears follow those steps. These font packages are nothing but overlays.
This is a really great app, many thanks.
Quick question, could we use it to change the emoji style if we had an emoji TTF? Or are the emoji something that can't be changed using this method?
