Hi at all,
I was wondering if there's a way to get access to internal storage memory of my rooted Milestone 2 and put user data into it.
I have 6gb free with a tons of apps intalled and I believe it's a waste of memory
I'm not an android geek, I'm looking to a /etc/fstab to create a new mount point, but android is quite different from a standard linux system...
You can use a Root Explorer app (http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-speedsoftware-rootexplorer-Fiq.aspx)

You can't actually use the internal memory for storage. Its read only. You can access it with root explorer but you can't store pictures or music there. 8 gigs for apps, kind of a waste

You can pretty much store whatever you want there. The gallery app may not recognize it being there, but with root explorer you can put whatever you want on the phone. I suppose you could also use ADB and push things to the phone but, that's you're prerogative.

It's not the same thing I meant
You can put files in root filesystem with rootexplorer, adb or terminal emulator but apps as album, music or video player can't access it.
On win mobile devices with internal storage (es: i900 omnia) system recognizes 2 storage card with rw access, I wondered if we could use in some way the 8gb of internal storage of our D2/M2

i tried to move my picture folder on the internal memory so i could format my sd. my phone froze up and i had to pull the battery after about 10 minutes. when it rebooted the folder i created to hold my pics was gone.
The same here, files and folders placed in internal memory disappear.
I read somewhere that you can put files only on /data folder

I'm sorry if this has been covered but I have looked in several places and have not yet found an answer.
Bought the Vibrant on day 1- LOVE IT
I upgraded from my G1 running CM5.0.8 with Apps2SD
ALL my apps on the G1 were on the SD card
For whatever reason- LOTS of apps I have on the card never showed up as me having downloaded them when I signed into my google account and checked the market with the Vibrant.
3 QUESTIONS:
1) I want to put my 8Gig card from the G1 in the Vibrant but I want to know if there is a way to get those apps on the SD card on the Vibrant. (Actually it's just one app that for some reason is no longer in the market- it's called NightClock and it was one of the super early apps from back in the ORIGINAL days of the G1- none of the "NightClock" apps in the market is the one on my G1).
2) When I eventually put the 8gig card in the Vibrant is there some special way I need to format it? When I mount the vibrant now it shows 2 drives.
3) When I put the Vibrant's 2 Gig card in the G1 can I just reformat it as it was in stock form and still use the phone as a test device to upload my .apk files from eclipse?
Thanks
1) I think your best method to retreive your apps from your G1 is to copy them from either linux or from your g1 to the fat partition as i dont think you will be able to access the ext partition on the vibrant, i could be wrong on this, nvr done it.
2) I fdisk'd my sdcard on my pc then formated it before putting it in my Vibrant.
3) if you like you wont need to reformat the vibrant card as it is already in the correct format.
You could use a computer to pull the files from the SD. or you could back up the files using titanium backup then move that sd to the new phone and use titanium backup to restore them. Or, at least, I think you can. I have not tried it myself. If you format the SD while in the vibrant, you will lose all data.
good call, titanium backup run from the G1 would be the easiest way to back them up
Thanks everyone- stupid questions here but bear with me-

I don't know how to do either of those things- How do I even access the apps from my pc? When I mount the SD card I do not see the apps anywhere- Ideally I would love to just drag the .apk files and install the ones I need on my phone- is that possible?

Again- I don't know what that means- sorry- Do I need to partition the card somehow as there are two drives associated with it?

I see that I have to have root to backup using Titanium Backup (not a problem on the G1) but do I need root on the Vibrant to restore a Titanium Backup file? I have never used it before.
Thanks again
You can format the card AFTER you pull the info from it.
I do not know if root is required to use titanium to restore, but if it does, this is the easiest phone to root ever!
If mainly just want that one app, then you can use something like Astro File Manager to back up your apk files. As long as it wasn't a protected app then you can save the apk file to your sdcard and then just transfer the apk over to your Vibrant and reinstall it.

I know WHEN to format the card I'm just wondering HOW to format it- do I just get everything off it I need and then pop it in the vibrant and hit format? Or do I FAT32 format it on the computer and then put it in the Vibrant and THEN hit format? Is it automatically partitioned? Are the two drives that show up when you mount the Vibrant both on the SD card?
THANK YOU
There is no need to partition because there is no apps-to-sd. You can format it right in the phone, or do a FAT32 format on your computer. The reason you see 2 drives when you mount it to the computer is because there is the internal 16gb SD and the external (removable) SD. It does not see your partitions.
Ahhhhhh- thank you very much- THAT is exactly what I was wondering. So the Vibrant gives you the option to unmount the internal SD card- what purpose does that serve?
dude, just use titanium backup or 'my backup pro' to back ur apps up from ur g1 (with root access) and then... put that zip file on ur PC, extract it, pick the apps that you want to put on ur vibrant, put them in a folder and then install them using astro on ur unrooted vibrant.

If you unmount the card from the phone, you won't be able to access it (on the phone). So, if you have it hooked up to your computer, you unmount it from your phone and mount it to your computer, your computer will recognize the drive and will allow you to search/explore it.
If you mount it back onto the phone, it will no longer be accessible by the computer. However, it will be accessible by the phone.
Thanks everyone problem solved using astro

you unmount so that you can take the sd card out while the phone is on. you do not want to take the card out while powered up without unmounting.
I am trying to create a folder on internal memory of my phone, but every time i do it disappear. Can this be done?
I dont think you can do that to be honest.
It is possible if you got root.

As root i can but after a reboot is gone
I'll bet money you are still s-on. If the security flag is on then any user defined changes to the internal flash will be temporary only and disappear on reboot.

Correct, I can do as normal after root. Used File Expert
I have S-OFF
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537&highlight=guide
Here's what you need to do! I used Root Explorer, but you can use any program which has similar features. Note I have S-Off and all that
Mount the Root of the phone as (R/W) Which means Read/Write. This lets you change files, modify, delete etc. What I did was I wanted to copy some music as a backup to my internal, so if I ever forgot my memory card at home, i'd have my favourite music on my phone! Anyways, I went to System/Media/Audio and made a new folder in there called Music. You don't have to do this, but I don't want files going all over the place around that area, can get messy
So I copied my music into that folder, around 500mb worth XD!
Then I set the Mount status to (RO) Read Only.
I took my memory card out, and put it in a safe place...those things can get lost in a sec XD
Back to the topic, I loaded up Music Player, and nope, no music shows...it's designed to read music from the SD Card only.
I loaded up Poweramp, and navigated to the folder in which I stored my music in! Voila, it read them! I even created a playlist called "No SDCARD" So I know what it's for Try it, the files won't disappear after you reboot. Handy if you wanna keep certain files safe.
WARNING: If you install a new rom, the files get deleted, since it's the system that gets formatted! So you have to do it all over again...not S-OFF, just copying the files Haha doesn't take long though!
Hope I helped
trying root your device, you will have everything!good luck

Already rooted and running Android Revolution
Hi all loads of chatter about storage on the Galaxy S4, the best solution to the storage issue on the S4 is to Root and use Folder Mount from Google Play to move the app data and build a virtual link in the Android OS.
Video guide:
You need to keep in mind that if you have a crap SD card that is either slow or failing then you will see a performance dip in games or app responsiveness if it needs to access the externally stored files.
Your other root option is Debloater to remove the sammy apps you don't need, or use both these and save space and install more stuff
Does it really work well?

Hi Everyone,
Back with an android phone after quite a while.
Just added a sd card to my SGS7E and realised I can't do anything with it.
All I want is to be able to use the sd card as you would normally, create and move files, folders etc.
Is this possible without rooting?
If so could someone provide any advice or point me to a relevant resource.
If i need to root what would you good people recommend? I don't want to do anything fancy at the moment (I'm sure that'll change) just use the card as normal storage.
Thank you for your help, advice and time.
The SD issues are my biggest let down. My camera won't save to it... people tell me to factory reset but I don't feel like loosing all my work I put into it.
Other apps see it as having storage in mb I think instead of GB. issues and nobody talks about it
Hi,
The sdcard is working okay for me. If system apps can't read or modify the content inside the sdcard, then reinsert the card or reformat it because it's very likely that the phone isn't seeing it.
If you want user installed apps to access the sdcard, it's a bit more annoying. Open the app that you want to access the card, then try to make a modification in it (like creating a new file if a file manager, saving a picture if a camera, downloading a file if a torrent client, etc), it will say it can't access the sdcard and will ask you to point where to root of the sdcard is, just select your sdcard folder on the prompt and it will work fine.
Keep in mind some stuff like app data can't be moved to the sdcard, so try to keep all media on your sdcard and all apps in your internal memory, that's what I found to be a pretty easy and good memory management. If you want however to install apps on your sdcard, you can enable adoptable storage using a terminal window (formatting your card), or root your device to use some third party app that will do that for you.
All the best,
~Lord

I'm having a rather unique problem with my the Micro SD card I installed.
I can format it as internal storage and it won't pop up for file managers or my computer.
This means I can't manually move files to it all.
Despite that when it's internal storage I can move apps to it and it adds new apps to it by default.
I could go to move all and move everything it can on, but it's a fairly slow SD card so I'm hoping to mainly put music, videos and any pictures on there.
I worry about it moving the apps that I want to keep in internal storage for speed over.
Does anyone know how I could fix this?
EDIT:
I didn't manage to figure out how to add files manually while it was internal storage through either internal file managers or through the computer.
But I did manage to find the SD card while it was portable.
The trick is to use the built in file explorer on the phone and copy a small file onto the SD card.
With there being something other than just Android files on the SD card it can then be discovered by the computer.
This mainly solves my problem as I plan to use it primarily for storage of music and game files, with the emulators being on the phone itself.
I had this issue a few days ago. You have 2 options to format, (1) as a internal storage and only your phone can read this and other option (2)to use on others devices. Using the second option I managed to transfer files to my microSD like it used to be.
While using the first option I was able only to transfer apps to it through the system.
I hope it helps
I'm using one, but I'm not even able to find it with File Manager?
Is that normal for Internal Storage?
I expected there to at least be a folder in the normal phone space called SD card or something?
Is there no way to manually move music there when it's internal storage?
Also I tried changing it to be portable but my computer still couldn't see it.
File manager could actually see it and open it but I couldn't copy paste anything to it.
So I turned it back to internal as I can at least move apps to it successfully at the moment.

When I tried as Internal Storage any File Manager found my SDcard too... Thats why I'm using as portable.
After that, i could see this.
Maybe you're missing something like changing the USB connection from Charging to File transfering.
Did you checked this?
Yes it can see the rest of my phone and move files, so I've made sure to change it to file transferring.
When you used internal storage file managers failed to find your SD card as well?

I assume you forgot to say it failed to show up separately and that's why you changed to portable.

Sorry! Yes, I failed to find my SD card too, thats why i changed to portable.
Im assuming this is a normal behavior, my last Android phone was a Galaxy S2 and I stopped following Android changes for the lasts 4/5 years. But idk why you can't see it even in portable mode... That should work as worked for me.
Hope someone help you more than I did!

Thank you for trying to help.
I think I might have figured out part of the problem, the file explorer I normally use doesn't have permission to add anything to the SD card. I'm not sure how I would go about giving it permission though.
But when I use the system built in I was able to copy paste some music onto it.
With a file on the SD Card my computer was able to locate it as well, and I can now copy and paste to the SD card using my computer.
So with your help I was able to figure out how to get portable working.
It is a bit disappointing that there isn't a way to manually add files while it is an internal storage though.
So again while your solution didn't directly work, it made me think and find a solution to my problem even if it's not the one I wanted.
