Switching over to Epic from Evo today - Epic 4G General

I just agreed to meet someone to swap out my rooted HTC Evo with a Samsung Epic. I hope I'm making the right decision. I miss a physical qwerty so much. I hope the battery life on the epic is halfway decent. Thoughts?

The battery life for my Epic lasts all day before I have to put it back to charge, about 15 hrs. But it all depends on how you use the phone. Also welcome to the Epic community

ProTip: If you slide your finger along the status bar you can adjust the brightness to save battery. I believe auto-brightness needs to be turned off to do this.

The huge gap in the experience between the Evo being better than the epic (in terms of modding) has been lessened seeing how Froyo is up and running and Devs are having a field day. If the Keyboard is what you want i'd do the deal straight up. If the person wants you to throw something extra in though, don't do it. It isn't worth it.
On a side note am I the only person upset that the keyboad doesn't have a dedicated @ key but has a dedicated smiley key???

So after 6 hours with the Epic I am beyond speechless. Sure I would love a neat custom rom but this thing is fast and swype is working outstanding.. I missed the keyboard more than I could imagine and after taking off the gaudy screen protector the graphics and color is the most amazing thing I have ever seen. It got down to about 50% after 6 hours of heavy usage but I plan on getting it better. I have a few questions.. Is there no battery monitor in settings.. because I had to guess it was 50% by looking at the battery bar. there was no 10% mark in settings that I could find. I plan on searching up on how to root it.. Need my wireless tether.. BTW if anyone has a direct link I'd consider it an early XMAS gift.. ironically I heard Froyo was released today.. the day I decide to swap out the evo for the epic.. I'm not missing a thing about the evo.. it was way to bulky and wide.. plus my fingers are like hot dogs lol..

The best options to know the exact battery % (IMO)

very straight forward. And remember to always make a backup!

UnOffical- Offical Battery Use for the Evo

I will be getting the Evo when it will be coming out and I and probably 100 other people are worried about the battery life of this monster. What we know is this guy has a huge screen, a WiMax radio and a 1 GHz processor that will suck up the battery life crazy. However, HTC has made sure to put in a 1500 mAh battery that is almost as big as the phone. Coming from the Pre this is comforting but I am still kinda skeptical about the battery life if this monster.
So the purpose of this thread is for all of those lucky people who already have a Evo to post there experiences with the life of this superphone. What I need of you is normal daily battery life with 3G and 4G, normal screen brighness, how much you use internet, email check frequency, and anything else you what to mention. This will really help alot of people out here who are potential Evo owners.
Oh, and Thanks in advance!!!!
EDIT to moderators: This maybe a good thread to make a sticky.

This is the beast of a battery I'm planning to get for my future Evo. Can't wait to see what 2000 mAh of juice will do to its durability .

Keep in mind: this battery will add 25-33% to the thickness.
The extra 3 to 4 mm of thickness would make the Evo as thick as the G1 which to me is no problem at all considering my current phone is the G1 WITH an extended battery.

Not much of a problem for me; if anything, it will make the Evo easier to hold in the hand.

That just may be perfect for the protruding camera lens many are worried about!
Well I live in a 3g area and work in a 4g area. I have a 2 hour drive each way and half way I hit 4g. Right now if I just stay on 3g the battery can last me all day with normal usage. I usually only charge the device while I'm driving home from work so I can listen to my music or podcasts. I'd say on normal usage you get about 12 hours. That's what I get at least. But here's a solution for you. The Evo takes a normal HTC Hero or Touch Pro 2 battery. I bought a TP2 battery on eBay for about $5. Now all I need to do is make sure I keep one charged and the other charged and in my car. Then I can swap if I need to.
Also note that as of now, 4g sucks battery big time. I think this is a bug in the software so once they fix that then we'll be fine. But right now if you leave 4g on permanently you probably only get about 4 hrs. Just a warning.
Thx for the comments so far! My experience with the Pre, which had alot of battery bugs at the start, says that after all the bugs are worked out it will give you 1-3 hours more. So with 4G running 5-6 hours strait is an ok deal. Just the most important thing to me right now is just to have at least 12 hours of usage with a far amount of browsing on 4G at the time.
I previously owned an HD2, which is nearly identical to the EVO 4G except for OS, and thought battery life was pretty good. Got at least a day out of it and I was on it all the time (wifi connection mostly).
this is pretty surprising that people are getting this much out of the battery.
i was figuring maybe four or so hours max. i can't even last a whole day on my droid with low usage, but the fact i dropped it in the toilet could have something to do with it.

Ha ha. Yeah toilets and phones usually don't mix. Unless it's WinMo in which case thats where it belongs
But yeah my battery has been very good to me. Definitely can't complain. On a side note it does take a considerable longer amount of time to charge than the Hero I was using but that only makes sense.
Yesterday I took my Evo to work with me for the first time since receiving it Friday. It had a full charge when I left the house at about 340pm. At about 1030pm, I got the message to connect the phone to the charger. In between that time span, I did some web browsing and sent some text messages (I love the Evo keyboard). I didn't make any calls because I'm still carrying my Palm Pre with me until the 4th when I can get my service switched to my Evo. But anyway the Evo lasted a lot longer than my Palm Pre. It probably would have even lasted longer but I had some programs pulling information every 15mins and some every 2 hours. So I set all them to pull information at longer intervals. So I'm going to see how long it'll take before I get that message again. But so far the battery that came with Evo serves me fine.

What are you doing with a phone in a bathroom? Jerk off material?
As the owner of a Sprint Hero, I was very happy to discover that the battery is interchangeable with my Evo.
When I actually tested out the battery (second day of ownership): I was at 36% remaining after 14 hours of moderate use (auto-backlight, occasional texting, reading emails, installed a few apps, browsing XDA, etc). Some observations: The first 10-15% will drain more quickly than the others, incredibly intense apps like 3D gaming will extremely quickly drain the battery (like 6% in half of an hour), and keep your brightness on 20% or so because auto seems to always keep it very bright.
Yesterday I tried the typical "full discharge" test since people seem to rave about it, and I don't see any harm. I will see how this goes today.

Evo Info

Hi all.
I currently have a galaxy s and I'm tired of all of the bugs (lag and gps). I've searched the www. And I don't see any complaints about the evo other than battery life.
Im thinking about switching to the evo becuase it seems like a pretty solid phone with great community dev support. But before I do, I thought I would check in with you all to see if there are any known issues/annoyances with the phone.
Thanks!

the battery life has gotten a lot better over the past few months. Now 2 days on a charge is pretty easy. It sucks compared to dumbphones but considering this phone is more powerful than my original eeePC netbook which only lasts 2 hours on a charge 2 days is pretty phenomenal
The REAL flaw with the Evo is that the housing cracks. Pretty much all Evos develop hairline cracks/fractures at the power button and volume buttons. It's not going to cause the phone to fall apart but it's kind of a downer when you find the cracks in your phone. If you get a case that protects the phone and has its own buttons that press the power and volume buttons for you then you can likely avoid developing those cracks.
Other than that this phone is amazing.
All I can say is my wife and I got rid of our etch e sketches (iphones) and switched over to Sprint for the EVO and have never looked back.
With ROM/Kernel combo in my sig I am currently at Uptime of 11hrs 39 min and 50 min with Awake time while at 90% batt life. I stream a lot of music through bluetooth headset, watch videos, hulu tv, pull data thru apps from home computer, email etc.
The least I do is make phone calls and I dont have 4G here so I am sure battery life will get pegged somewhat when we do get it.
All in all I use between 8-9GB of data a month since EVO came out. I have also upped from 8GB micro sd to a 32GB and bought Sprints OEM extended battery.
When you see pics of cracked screens on the web you will learn not to drop it... Again, I think you will like it.
I made the switch from a vibrant and I love the evo. The only thing I miss about the vibrant is the amount of on board storage. Evo has no lag, perfect gps and great support so far

HTC Shift Keyboard has the Desire/iPhone Cursor Magnifying

So glad I traded in my Epic today for the Shift. This just topped it off.
Word.
Moved to general
You make a good point OP. I'm curious why you moved from the Epic? I'm actually contemplating going the other way around although I might give the Shift a second chance. It's starting to grow on me so as long as I can get around the battery dying in 4 hours thing.

As a current owner of all 3 sprint 4G phones DONT DO IT dont move to the epic stick to one of the Evo's if the wobbly keyboard of the epic doesnt get you the laggy RFS (which can be corrected now) filesystem will, or lack of official froyo (yea the leak works great but lacks the polish feel) you also have the lack of girth it just feels like its going to break in your hands and the screen isnt quite as bright its vivid but only gets about 75% as bright as the evo.
I have some side by side shots if you would like to see em.
^ It's okay, but thanks for the offer. I played with all 3 in the Sprint store for an hour before making a decision. I'm just having second thoughts, because I'm missing a larger screen, but I'm hoping to get around it.
Ok, I'm not familiar with this feature. What is it?
When you are typing a box, try holding down your finger. You will see a magnified popup either above or below your finger. At this point you can see easier so you can slide the cursor around effortlessly.

I nearly returned the phone for the same reason. I did a factory reset, then charged the phone until the light turned green, then unplugged and turned the phone off and recharged until the light turned green, then unplugged till the light turned off and then plugged in again until the light turned green.
It took about an hour each time, but now my battery is working great. I am only adding one app each cycle and will watch my battery usage.
Got 13:41 on my last charge! Give it a try.

There must have been something wrong with your setup. I'm 36 hours without a charge and at 30% battery left. I'm not doing anything different than I ever have. I've never had an android phone last this long not even my Optimus S which I thought was the best on battery.
I'm guessing you had something running at 100% cpu in the backround. I noticed I had a download hang up in the market and that killed my phone in a few short hours the first day I got it. I didnt know it was stuck trying to download until the next time I went into the market.

This is a very handy feature...good looking out.
i think the battery life is great, i'm getting between 13 and 15 hours a day and the battery is still at 35% when i plug it in.
i have Sync set to one hour: 2 gmail accounts, facebook and weather.
WiFi is always turned on (and connected about 80% of the time)
Bluetooth is always on and connected to my headset
4G is off (don't live in a 4G market)
GPS is off (turned it off to test 3G speeds and never turned it back on, i don't think it does much in th way of impacting battery life)
and my brightness is set to Auto.
i'm sure i could get more life out of it but i can't justify turning off all the phones features to do so.
this thing is night and day better than my Evo when it comes to battery life, i bought the Seidio 3500mah battery for my Evo and it only gets about 19 hours on a good day, stock battery i was lucky to get 8 hours.
haha funny thing though, i have my Evo on me for testing roms and such, i'm at 40 hours and it's at 27% on the extended battery, thats with everything but WiFi turned off and i hardly touch it during the day.

Thinking of purchasing a Fascinate

Hey guys,
I am thinking of purchasing a certified used Fascinate to a) have another phone to play with and b) lock myself into the unlimited data plan before VZW cuts me off this summer (i am month to month right now.)
is it a good phone? i know the screen is brilliant. how is the battery life? i have a Dinc and it cant be worse than that. how is the dev community? is cm7 available?
any thoughts or opinions would be great.. thanks.
I think its a great phone and we have a great dev community. However, it won't help you lock in unlimited. As soon as anyone upgrades to a lte phone you'll be forced to get a new plan. That's what happened when 3g came out and it will happen with 4g on all big carriers. I.e. at&t peeps will lose their grandfather clause too with lte. Sucks but its how they work.

Punk.Kaos is working on a CM7 build currently. He has an alpha posted in the dev section, and many people (including myself) are salivating for his next release.

i have no plans to upgrade to a 4g phone at this time, at least not through verizon. i am only looking to secure my $29.99 unlimited data for the time being.
Verizon hates me; Its an argument every time I get a new phone, but I insist on keeping my exisiting plan.
Im paying Alltell rates from a plan 4 years old. To get the exact same service branded 'Verizon', Id have to pay $25 more a month for two phones.
Its all a game. If you like your plan after your contract, they cant force you to change unless you go to LTE or something that isnt supported on your current plan.
it's a great phone! lots of potential, and, if you read everything you can in the fascinate forums here, you will learn a lot. the screen was what made me choose it over the droid x. i don't regret it at all.
Battery and Screen have to go to the fascinate but if your looking at ROMs I would stick with the DINC. There is no groundbreaking or impressive ROM development out here for the fascinate. So you wont see a fully functional Ultimate Droid, MIUI, or CM ROM. Who knows if there will ever be innovative and feature-packed ROMs for us here.
now everyone can start bashing me
Well from what I read now that froyo is available the fascinate is the most state of the art single core 3g android phone on Verizon.
Screen is impressive and looks better than the INC. Battery life really depends on what kernel and rom you choose, like other phones. The Fascinate, although it has a great dev community, because Samsung's being a douche about Froyo and its source for the Fascinate, many custom roms like CM, and MIUI, and roms with special addons are not quite there yet, but we do have stable Froyo roms and themes. No custom kernels for Froyo yet because of lack of source.

If it weren't for the Devs there wouldn't be any Froyo. The false promises of an update have been frustrating but I've been using the leaked version in the Super clean rom for awhile and I love it.
To sum it up for you quickly, you want custom stuff, stay with the incredible or move on to the Thunderbolt, but if you want the best hardware and media playback on the market, get the Fascinate.
I have been using certified used for about a month.
Looked good as new, they put in new battery, charger, rear cover, etc.
Works well...have bricked twice and had no issues that were related to hardware.

so well worth the $35 dollars? lol
i do have the INC for development but my concern is that my inc only gets good battery life if i run cm6.1 with a very modified kernel.
what is the average battery life on a froyo rom? lets say... moderate use.
no one has anything else to say about their phone they use everyday?
I came from a D1 and would not go back. Miss some of the the things from CM but am happy with what I can do so far.
Mine will last a typical moderate (i even play some games) day off the charger with SC** rom's. Just updated today to latest so dont know on it yet.
Rom's will only get better.
Battery life is the only thing that I don't like about it. But with a screen like this its hard not to have bad battery life. RIP geekniks stupidfast kernels with 4 days of battery life.

As far as custom Roms go battery life is all over the board. When I was using SC 2.2 my battery life was good, but it dropped off on 2.4, 2.6, and 2.7. Now that I'm using 2.8 it's good again but different people have different results because their are so many ways to customize. The worst battery life I got was with the stock rom.
Seidio makes a 1600mAh slim battery which gets you an additional 100mAh without replacing your battery door; Not that signifigant but the 3000mAh extended battery is a huge jump.
I do agree that the picture quality is second to none. It has a beautiful screen.
Battery life depends on how you use and how you define "light", "moderate", and "heavy" usage. For me, moderate usage will get me around 15-20 hours of battery life. Phone will lose about 1-1.5% an hour when it is idle with screen off so standby time is very good.
Phone is fast and stable. Media playback is top-notch. The screen is beautiful and quite responsive to input. The phone feels decent in your hand though I do prefer it with a rubberized case. I have the Otterbox Impact and I find that it gives the phone a perfect feel for my hand.
I honestly have no complaints with the Fascinate aside from Sansung being slow to update it. That said, with Superclean 2.8 I'm pretty sure I'll never use the Froyo OTA update anyway. We also have a buddding dev scene. A CM7 port and framework are in the works, along with a custom 2.2 kernel, and a MIUI port.
I'm certainly biased, but I would recommend the Fascinate to just about everyone except for people who NEED a hardware based keyboard.
My battery life is very good with any use.
I know others have used varying beta roms and have battery issues.
I have had zero of these issues.
My battery always lasts a full day easily (last night after being unplugged for ~20hrs it still had over 40% life).
I use it daily with these basic cases:
get up around 6:30am....
unplug, read email/messages, check out online game (diplomacy), check some news, check calendar...
throughout day...
use various tools, browser, map, gps on, xda, diplomacy, etc, use pandora for couple hours as i hit the gym...
I then plug in at bedtime between 11pm and 1am.
Rarely it will be in a low red colored %. Great majority of time its between 20 and 40%.
Only time frame I needed to plug in during day was on days when I was making extensive phone calls (hours for various issues) or right after I got Angry Birds. Played continuously for a week.

Evo Shift vs. evo 4g

I'm thinking of switching to sprint, which means a new phone (yay) and as I browse my phone options I hear a lot of good things about the Evo. My question for you guys is, is the evo shift pretty much the same as the evo just with the slide out keyboard? is one somehow "better" in some aspects then the other? I would love to have the keyboard but to be honest I usually use the on screen one anyways on my current phone (Tmobile G2).
My second question is, which other phones would you say are worth considering as well?
Lastly, I'm also thinking of switching to Verizon when the Thunderbolt comes out. The main reason I'm switching is because I'm pissed off that Tmobile is cutting my internet speed after I reach 5 GB bandwidth and I know that Sprint and Verizon are the two providers that don't do that. However It appears that Verizon will charge you a higher fee once you go over 10gb bandwidth, which would be ok if the Thunderbolt is really cool

Might want to hold off until CTIA and Sprints announcements there to see if you want one of those phones.
http://goo.gl/xwHrG
I agree with the post above, you may want to wait as Sprint will be announcing 2 new phones. The EVO 3D does sound interesting.
If you can't wait, I looked at both the EVO and EVO Shift and decided on the EVO Shift. The extra battery life alone is what sells me on this device. I also prefer the size of the Shift. As as added bonus the Shift has benchmarked higher than the EVO, and the keyboard has come in handy on many occasion.
There are many selling points to the EVO as well, primarily the larger screen, but pound for pound the Shift was and still is the better choice IMHO.
Try and buy a phone outright from bb and you will pay significantly more than a corporate store.
My 2 cents...
The evo with the sprint branded extended life battery makes up for the evo's biggest con, battery life. Only bad thing so far is I can't find a case for the fatter evo. My eyesight is getting worse so smaller screens and fonts aren't fun to deal with. I do have a shift and it's a nice little phone. I thought I wanted a keyboard phone but I'm growing out of that. Now, the thing I find the keyboard good for is playing emulator games. It's too frustrating with on screen controls with console games, for me.
Another feature to consider with the evo is it is supposedly one of the few phones that with wireless tether, it runs in infrastructure mode and not ad hoc like most the rest. You could, theoretically, run a xoom or other android phones on wifi with the evo as the access point. From what I've been reading, the xoom can't see ad hoc. Once again I digress.
I am willing to wager some money that the new Evo will be a much better phone then the Thunderbolt. I went with the shift because by the time the device comes out my 1 year upgrade will be rolling around again. Also I remember seeing something about Sprint having a cap on 3G speeds after 5 GB of data usage, but 4G is all you can eat. All phones can be run as Wifi Tether when Rooted, or you can pay Sprint for the unrooted version, which the Evo and Evo Shift both do.
Evo shift.. has much better battery life!!!

Another feature to consider with the evo is it is supposedly one of the few phones that with wireless tether, it runs in infrastructure mode and not ad hoc like most the rest. really? The Xoom won't be able to see the shift's WiFi signal? I know the iPad can, because I use it all the time through my phone. That'd be yet another shortcoming of the Xoom.

did you use an evo extensively before using the shift?
anyone else perhaps switch from an evo to a shift? Im looking for battery life, i use my device all the time and recharging in my 10a class is getting annoying.(I leave my house at 6.30a)
I need better battery life without adding bulk so i dont want an aftermarket battery. been thinking heading to the blackberry camp because i loved the battery life on my tour.
is the shift significantly better on battery consumption than the evo? advise please.thank you!

I picked up the Shift last week, came from the Evo which I've had since last June. The Shift has much better battery life while in use compared to the Evo. With the Shift, if i use the xda app for an hour, I'll see the battery drop 13%-16%. With the Evo it was closer to 20% battery drop. Doing web browsing on the Evo sometimes the battery will drop almost 25% per hour, where as the same usage on the Shift will be less than 20%. Keep in mind battery usage will vary depending on location, signal strength, whether you're using wifi or 3g, etc. In my regular usage I do notice an improvement with the Shift.
I tried pretty much every ROM available for the Evo and had no issues getting through the day without needing to recharge with my regular usage. Battery life was great while the phone was sleeping - charge the phone to 100% at night, unplug and go to bed, wake up and the battery was at 95%. This was using some of the custom kernels available. With the stock rooted ROM on the Shift, I wake up and the battery is at 93%. I'm sure changing to an undervolted kernel will at least match the Evo when it comes to battery life while sleeping.
Bottomline is with heavy or moderate usage, battery life with the Shift is noticeably better. If you barely use your phone both phones can easily go over 24 hours.

Hey abanh... is it bad to keep ur phone on the plug? Does it wear out the battery?

No - HTC designed it so when your battery reaches 100% it will stop charging. So that means even though your phone is still sitting on the charger and the battery meter indicates 100%, it's actually not charging until the battery drops below a certain threshhold (I'm thinking 90%). The battery meter will still be at 100% even though it actually dropped somewhere into the 90 percent range. Thats why when you take your phone off the charger the battery drops down close to 90% so quick.
I take my phone off the charger every night, but when i wake up in the morning i put it back on the charger while i get ready for work. 15 minutes on the charger in the morning will put the battery closer to 100% to start the day versus leaving it charging all night.
