WP7 (Windows Phone 7)-esque layout on Milestone - Motorola Droid and Milestone Themes and Apps

Hi all,
I posted this screenshot on Twitter last night and had some interest:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
So thought I'd show how I did it.
Yes, and before you say anything - I know the icons aren't quite lined up, but on screen you don't really notice (and it was late, I was tired, and I didn't want to start messing with images! Well, I know 8.25pm isn't late, but I had a busy day, ok? lol)
In the flesh:
So, I'm running MIUI 12.3 on my Milestone (great ROM!), but I doubt that matters - you just need LauncherPro as your Launcher and you should be good to go. It doesn't have to be registered to Plus, but if it is, you'll be able to fit in the battery as well as the clock (by resizing the 4x1 widget to 3x1)...
1) Install LauncherPro and Desktop Visualizer from the Android Market.
2) In LauncherPro settings, set Appearance of the Dock to Custom, and use this image: http://imgur.com/download/N4HuX
3) Under Advanced, set rows to 7 (yes!) and leave columns on 4. This is at the moment the best way I've found the icons line up. It seems the Milestone screen doesn't seem to match other Layout configurations I've seen!
4) You'll also want to Hide the Status Bar.
5) Get the icons from here and download to your SD card: http://cl.ly/587f170f67f0e691eec9
6) Using Desktop Visualizer, layout the icons in 3x1 or 1x2 widgets as above, making sure you Clear the icon text after you select the program to link the image to.
7) Delete all the items from the dock, and use this transparent icon from here for the centre menu button: http://www.elektrobike-hotels.com/markers/transparent.png
8) The clock is the Digital Clock Widget and the battery is BattStat.
I hope that helps some of you!
The source of the files I've used are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=781455 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=783946. Thank you to those original posters - without you I wouldn't have even tried! However, I couldn't get either layout to line up exactly so had to make my own instructions.
It may be due to the fonts under MIUI, so this make not line up the same on other ROMs - I'm not sure! You may find the first link above actually works better for you if this one doesn't! I know different ROMs seem to layout things a bit differently!

Nice work!
It needs some fine tuning (size/overlap) and some more icons (modern).
Here's a screenshot on my Moto.

I have been searching for the Battstat widget, but have not been able to get it from the market or anywhere.
Could yuou upload this for us, or assist with download.

Firstly, please don't quote a WHOLE massive post to ask a question about one line.
Secondly, does this help? http://www.appbrain.com/app/battstatt-free/net.bajawa.battery

Extended Controls Widget

UPDATED: December 29, 2010.
I have changed, because I found a better alternative:
WIDGETSOID2.x
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.jim2/
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
It is much better with more customizations and more widget sizes & variations.
And it is FREE !
The dev is awesome, updated quite often as well.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS IS THE ORIGINAL THREAD:
Hi,
Is anyone using "Extended Controls Widget"?
Did you find any issue with HTC Desire?
QR Code:
Thanks, problem in HTC Desire are fixed
Last Release: 3.1
Nice for the Desire supports ... but I have couple of suggestions:
1. Configurable "Brightness" control for 3 steps only and user can specify how much brightness for each step (I want to use 10% brightness for the lowest setting, 20% is too much for me).
2. Controls that when pressed will execute choosen applications. This should work like a shortcut for application. It would be awesome to have this! For example: I have an app to activate certain "profile" and I want to launch it from the Extended Control widget.
This widget has a lot more potential. Think about my suggestions above
why do these contorl widgets never come with mobile data widget?
This one has.

Thanks Gogol for your suggests!! We immediately working on
@ supasye: there is the control called APN that switches the data network.
Where to download, can't find it in market?!?
great widget, I only miss more configuration for brightness (too many steps for easy use) and auto brightness support
Dammit Gogol, you find some really nice widgets
cool.. have a go at SwitchPro Widget as well...
How about:
Dazzle Configurable Switcher
http://www.appbrain.com/app/org.hermit.dazzle
Just got Switch Pro. Handy widget.
Tried to get Extended Controls but got stuck on payment authorization and failed.
The functions and UI look almost identical fwiw.
Sent from my Eris using Tapatalk
Does Extended Controls Widget support On / Off of cellular/mobile data ?
Or does it just take you to the setting page for this ?
Dazzle Configurable Switcher only take you to the setting page
^I've only found the stock widget able to do that.
-------------------------------------
- Sent via my HTC Desire -
I tried both and ended up going with Extended Controls Widget.
The only things I'd like to see in a future release are:
Turn off the widget's background. SwitchPro has this and it works well with dark wallpapers
Flashlight switch to turn on LED
Also if you remove a widget and try to add it, it sometimes gets confused and tells you you need to add a widget you're not currently using. Have to reinstall to get around that.
Aside from that it's great!
yes, would love to see...
* a transparency slider option
* some way to change the settings of the widget already onscreen? (a shortcut in the applications folder or something?)
* a way to arange the order of the widgets
other than that great, i bought it
Main reason that i'll take Switchpro over anyhting else is that is has a 7 button widget iso just 5.
really love this widget!
this that I would suggest for future versions:
transparent widget
ability to toggle wireless tether on froyo
Add the ability to switch to auto with backlighting
So far great app. def. worth the 79c!

Extended Controls will shove as many buttons into the widget you're building as you want to put in there. You could throw 11 buttons in there if you wanted to (and I have, for fun).
Really? Nice In the same space as 4 regular icons, right? Then they really only need to add skins indeed! ( esp. transparent )

[LAYOUT + ICONS] CommonSense v1.3 (new icons)

Hey all! This is a theme I made to make my device both practical and stylish. I got tired of all of the minimalistic themes out there because they were so unpractical. So many people requested this that I decided to make entire thread for it
I was inspired by a screenshot I saw in the General Android Themes thread but I can't find the post anymore. I haven't made any of the icons myself so all credit goes to the artists at DeviantART The small icons I combined from icons made by chrfb and borncold. There's an about.txt inside the zip file containing all the information about the origins of the icons. The lockscreen is a combination of modified programs by Andrewtst
Feel free to share and modify! I hope you share your own modifications and icons in this thread so that we can develop this theme even further
All the required files and information can be found right here:

The round icons are included in the modded widget, but you can download them here. I can't recall who's made them but I just happened to have them on my computer. I think they're from Win7 phones.

Thanks Jiia, much appreciated.
Really cool, I had similar layout. I edited the "big" icons and removed the shadow under them so it looked cleaner.
My old layout looked like this:
Ah, that's quite similar to the one I saw I liked it but thought it had too few icons and didn't make use of the dock bar. Anyways I like that style a lot. Maybe you could share your icons and wp too so people can use them?
Thanks Jiia
I have a question about the large icon that is to be placed in the center of the screen. How can I make this big, when I add it the icon appears tiny and I cant seem to find an option to make it bigger?
Edit: I am so silly!!! I realised I needed to add this as a widget
these all are made of widgets.what if we wipe our phone before installing a custom rom? do we have make all icons etc again? i mean is there any way of backing up these?

Not that I know of. LauncherPro can't backup widget settings so I don't think there's a way.
Added 25 new icons 5 new colour options
no zip files there when I try to download?

[JOURNAL] The making of: a Launcher

Today I began to make an old idea into reality: a new, lightweight launcher.
The basic idea was derived from iPhone: an easy-to-use menu, without a home screen (thus light-weight).
So basically, this won't be the favorite of the people, as it does not include widget support, or anything like that. Just a bunch of icons, and a bottom dock (what is editable of course).
After mixing the good features of the latest launchers (ADW, LauncherPro, TouchWiz, original Froyo, Donut launchers), I came to a feature list:
- Pages of icons instead of a list
- Page indicator dots (top or bottom)
- Icons get background like iOS (or like TouchWiz)
- Icons are placed based on position - new app goes to the end (not alphabetically ordered - like in TouchWiz3 Launcher, layout loaded from an XML file)
- A nice clock screen (this one is my idea - to have a clean area, where are no icons, just a clock, maybe with weather and music player, and with notifications)
- Use labels if possible (so the GMail account will have an incoming messages circle at the top, just like messaging and Phone (for missed calls, etc).
- Customization by skins - icons can be replaced with a custom theme, and this time, the app icons aren't loaded (lightweight!!!!)
- Customization by settings - select layout style (4/4 or 4/5 icon layout, page indicator position and color)
- Settings backup to SD card
After this list, I made a little mockup what shows how I imagined iLauncher:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
What you can see here:
- The basic layout
- Page indicator circles on top (first page - clock, second page (current) - icons, third page -icons)
- Incoming indicators on icons (GMail and messaging)
- Running background process indicator (Google Talk is running in the bg)
What you can't see here:
- Icon labels - it will be the usual icon label, nothing really big change
- Icon backgrounds - when the mockup was made, I did not decide whether to have them or not
- Anything else I forgot to include
Then, when the mockup was ready, I began working on the code.
As a beginning, I took a look at android-7's (Android 2.1 update 1) samples, namely the Home sample (actually, the whole current AppInfo/AppIcon class is from there). That gave a pretty nice look over the stuff, so I grabbed what I needed (the icon classes) and began working on the bottom dock.
More will come as I develop each bit of the app!
Please note:
I do NOT need help in this. This journal is merely a share of my experience what I got coding iLauncher. Any time I code a bit of it, I add here what I did, and what happened after.
If you want to help me even I told you I don't need it, you can do so by collecting tutorials, code samples on these:
- The (not so) random icon background - still haven't figured out how to add them based on icon color, etc
- The paging system (the whole page system, flipping around, needs to be done)
- Notification labels
I will test it for you.

Hacked ADW w/ Large MIUI'ish dock

Updated to ADW latest github
I hacked up ADW launcher to have a MIUI'sih dock. It's nothing special but I kinda dig it so i figured id dump it here to share. I'm pretty sure it will only work in portrait mode because i never use landscape i didn't bother modding that source.
Thanks to Anderweb for having such a great open source project!
Thanks to Jrizzill for having such great icons!
- ADWSettings->Main Dock Style->5 Icons has been changed, to have 4 large icons as in pictures below. You must have ADWSettings->UI Settings->Dockbar checked to have swipe gesture open/close app drawer properly.
- Get icons here.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/team-d1-miui/88474-miui-themed-icons.html
- To open/close the app drawer, swipe the dock apps.
- To add a MIUI icon to the dock
1) long press, select custom shortcut
2) press pick your activity, press applications, select application
3) click the icon to the left of the "pick your activity" button, navigate to the one you want to use, click ok.
4) drag and drop it into the dock.
- Use desktop visualizer (1x1 small) for other desktop shortcuts.

OMG this is exactly what I've been looking for. Seriously when i switched from the Incredible to the Fascinate, the one thing I really missed was MIUI and having the large dock. I've been trying to hack launcher pro but this is great! Thank you so much.
Does this need root?
Awesome!
There are only a few bugs that I have found.
- For some reason I can't seem to trash anything on the screen :O Drag to the top of the screen and nothing happens, just reappears on the bottom.
- Sometimes when hitting the home button it forgets what apps are in the dock until I open the tray and close it.
Not sure if those have to do with the version that you compiled, or ADW itself. Anyhow not trying to get down on ya, considering this is exactly what I was looking for!
Can't wait for 2.2 MIUI!

don't believe so
For all those out there using blackhole rom's if you are using the embedded ADW then you can't install this for some reason. I had to reinstall a clean rom with TW and then install this APK.
EDIT:
Sorry for the double post
Glad you guys like it. I will try and fix/tweak a few things. Also will try to make it so that it can be installed side by side with stock ADW.
1) haven't had that happen with missing dock apps. try using the old dock implementation, that's the config i'm using? will mess around with it.
2) do you see the trash icon appear at the top of the screen? try and drag it all the way up to the top and drop it there. it works for me.
3) you don't need root, but if you are using some ROM with ADW pre-installed, just remove it from /system/app and drop this apk in there.

Odd, how do I implement the old dock config? Also yes the trash can appears, I drag the icon up, it turns red then it reappears at the original location just does not want me to change the setup haha
hmm weird with the delete.
make sure that this is not checked.

Ok, found it. Still seems to have the same issue sometimes. Once in a while only 2 icons in the tray will appear in the center, until I open the app drawer then close it. Once I do that all is good again.
i updated a new build, try that one.
How do I use these icons in adw? Step by step if possible.
updated to 1.3.1 and added some instructions.
tried using desktop virtualizer to make the other icons. It works but there small. How do I make them larger. I'm using the icons in the link you provided.
Thanks
The large icons in the dock seem a bit fuzzy.Am I the only one having this problem?
I used hd icons btw
updated to latest github commits.

Hi,
You've done a fantastic job.
But can you build a version with dock bar like the dock on mac os? It should look like this image below
cdn3.staztic.com/screenshots/199657-1.jpg
Please copy and paste, i do not have permission to post image here.
MIUI
icons in this launcher are bad, can you port MIUI ADW theme for this? becouse theme haves good icons from MIUI and can you made dock from MIUI(screen indicator, dock style). If this`ll complete, launcher`ll looks pretty good) thanks!
Hey there,
Why cannot be installed on Eclair 2.1?
* LE: I made a mistake, it's working now. Agree with with the fuzzy icons in the dock. And also, is there a way to increase the number of rows? I like the icons to have also their labels, and only this is how it will going to work. Thanks.
Can we change the dockbar??

- WidgetLocker [The best of the best!]
WidgetLocker have to be the best Lock screen app out there.
You can do so much with it, have your own widget on the lock screen,
change slider layout from Iphone, Sense Ui, Froyo and Motorola.
To top it off, it can be customized! Every slider can be edited with
a png edit program like Photoshop or Gimp. Just replace the images in
the .APK and push it over wia ADB or use Root Explorer.
NB: This is not a free app, this is a paid app.

[If you do not wanna pay for the app there is an alternative,
But not that good!]
- LockBot Free
LockBot is totaly useable! It has some nice customizations and great layouts,
but i think its not that good due to the WidgetLocker App has so many more features. But this will do the work if you want a simple Iphone, Froyo Slider,
Circle Lock, X10 or even Galaxy. But i Recommend WidgetLocker.

This launcher is just as good as LauncherPro or Plus.
But to top it off, it is free like LauncherPro BUT you can resize in this launcher
without paying nothing for it. Its a great launcher,
it can do all the things stated in launcherpro launcher. But you have an alternative choice,
you can get a pad version "ADWLauncher EX" this one has alot of
new features and gives you a faster experience and better feel.
