I am actively working this guide and will be for some time to come.
The ultimate guide to getting the most of your battery
on CyanogenMod 6.1
Post 1: Installing CyanogenMod
Post 2: Settings
Post 3: Deleting and Adding Files
Requirements:
HTC Vision/G2
Root Access and S-Off http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833965
Clockwork Recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834731
Files:
CyanogenMod 6.1 http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/files/file/176-update-cm-610-vision-signedzip/
Google Apps http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/files/file/152-google-addon-hdpi-20101114/
Step 1:
Installing CyanogenMod 6.1
1. Root your HTC Vision/G2 and install Clockwork Recovery. Refer to the link at the top of this post if needed.
2. Download CyanogenMod 6.1 and the Google Apps via the links above and place them in the Root of your SD Card.
3. Load into Bootloader Mode via Volume Down and Power.
4. Navigate to Recovery Mode.
5. Navigate to Wipe Data/Factory Reset and press yes.
6. After Data and Cache Wipe are complete navigate down to Install Zip From SD Card. Press Choose Zip From SD Card and navigate to the CyanogenMod 6.1 Zip Folder.
7. Do the same for the Google Apps.
8. After installs are complete pull the battery or navigate through the menu to reboot.
9. Phone will take longer than usual to boot the first time.
Wireless & Network Settings:
Airplane Mode
Keep Airplane Mode off unless you are in an area with no coverage or are not expecting calls or data use.
Wifi
Keep Wifi off unless it is needed right away. Leaving Wifi on will consume battery since it will be searching for signal from Wifi networks constantly.
Bluetooth
Keep Bluetooth off unless actively using it. It is a huge power hog and will deplete batteries quickly.
Tethering & Portable Hotspot
USB Tethering is fine to use and will not consume battery power since your phone will be actively charging at the same time. However, Portable Wifi Hotspot depletes battery power quickly.
VPN Settings
I do not know what this is and delete file for it anyway.
Mobile Networks
Disable Data when not in use. Check 2G networks only if you are in a non 3G network area or are not detoured by slower speeds.
Call Settings:
12345678910
Holding as well
......what is the point of this? Why not wait until you finish your "ultimate guide" before you waste server space?
For teh lulz, thats why.
And I predicts its gonna be like:
turn this off, turn that off,
don't make your screen bright...
cycle your battery once a month etc etc

I do agree. Why bother to post placeholder threads for something that's not completed? This is not a race to see who posts guides faster.
When I came to this thread, I expected to see something good, but all I get is a whole bunch of nothing. At least post a warning on the thread title right?
I just set a personal best on my G1 (one). I charged it a few days ago and it's been on for almost 70 hours and the battery meter is still at 73%!!!
Never mind that there is no sim card in it and Set CPU has it at 128 mhz. I really thought it would be dead in 12 hours because the battery is getting weak.

Please do post it! I'm looking forward to it, and it sounds like you have some different ideas from other people (something about deleting from system directories?).
I'm not entirely sure how much that would work, but if it does, I'd be happy to hear it.
Why a guide specifically for Cyanogen though ?

I just found Froyo 2.2.1 with Kernel Version 2.6.32.9-27240 over here

...Cyanogen as well
As expected, I shouldn't have posted. Question: I got a Nexus since 1 day, installed Cyanogen and observed battery drain. So I am trying to use the original rom and see what happens. I'm not very experienced, does someone have hints to prolong battery lifetime?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Hi MenoDev,
from my personal experience I can tell that the duration of a new battery improves after a few charge/discharge cycles.
When I bought my N1 (but I had a similar experience with the Desire) the battery didn't last more than a working day (~8 hrs). Now, under the same usual workload, I can squeeze 2 full days of energy out of the battery.
I must admit that while I keep my GPRS connection always on, I do not use the telephone that much (20-30 mins of conversation a day). A different usage could obviously affect the battery duration.
But that is pointless. What I'm suggesting you is to use the device as you normally would, do a few charge/discharge cycles and you will surely experience a better battery duration in a matter of days.
Cheers.

I agree on that what the core dev has written. As for my understanding it is the lack of interprocess communication from "branded" stuff that the controller has no access to. That's not an Android issue but rather the implementation of the various "flavours" - teach me better, that's what I'm here for.
A note: Dynamic handling of processes and threads can't be hard coded - keyword Mutex: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_exclusion
(not even predictive modelling would get close to what is been claimed above)

OMG thank you sooo much for hosting the file! Ive been looking everywhere for 2.2.1 ota update and all the link where down! THANKS!
Ok i have posted these comments elsewhere. At the moment I have been lihjtly using my phone and it has been on standby since 1930 (10/2/11) and currently it stands at 80% charge at 1430 (11/2/11)
All I have done is turn flash to on demand (internet-settings-enable plugins- select on demand) I have also got the option to turn my mobile data usage off as well.
The idea came from a blog I was reading about macbook air and why Apple does not ship it with Flash, as it is this software that chews into the Macbook airs battery.
So i applied same idea to the DHD and Voila!
gonna give it a try
thanks btw
DN41
I'm trying this now and I've also noticed that apps are loading faster. Let me try the games...
Cheers from my DHD.
Hey....Nice one....Looks like the phone is faster now...Running CM7...can notice a visible difference...will leave it for some time to check the standby battery consumption
How did you turn off the mobile data usage ?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I used the mobile data app from the settings selection I think
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Or you can go to settings > wireless. Or set up a widget.
Cheers from my DHD.
Not sure if I notice a difference but I'll report back in a few days time. Thanks for the tip bro
Something I know is the XDA app works better and faster. I don't know why its so...
Cheers from my DHD.
Have just turned plungins to on demand... not sure if it's just me but things do start to feel a tad bit faster/smoother...
What are the implications of changing this setting? Would browsing sites with flash take a slightly longer time to load?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Well I cannot say about speed difference as it may be anecdotal however, I have now put it on charge this morning as it hit less than 10%. So in total it has lasted 36 hours!!!
I will fully charge again and try leaving the phone with internet data on and see what kind of difference this will make.
Over the past two days I have surfed on the phone, downloaded several podcasts (Freakonomics) listened to them all and done all the usual things with this phone. It now seems to behave how my Iphone 3GS use to act when in 2g mode.
Conclusion:
Impressed and overall consistency of improved battery life is finally available if we follow the Apple way and get the Flash off!!!lol.
Sorry could not help myself
Where can i find the setting to turn off? I would like to try and see if the battery life is better but i can't find the specified setting?
Never mind, found it. Lets see if this does the trick? Thanks

Isn't it common sense to turn off Mobile Data when you don't need it?
No wonder people complain about battery life when they have every single setting and sync turned on.
will give it a bash now

Can anyone explain how to turn flashh off please.
Yup, This is a great post
With a web page open goto menu, settings, scroll to the bottom and change plugins to on demand. That's it.
I tried it but haven't noticed any difference.

Hey Guys,
Not sure if anyone has ever posted this but I thought I would share how I am able to get 2 days plus on single charge...
I only recomend this if you are not totally dependent on your email, facebook, gtalk, etc to sync.
I have my email accounts on my phone but I don't need to receive them instantly meaning they are not dire important so this works for me.
Android's biggest battery killer, which most of you probably know, is data syncing in background and just data connection in general. What I personally do is keep 3G data off at all times by going to settings->wireless and networks->mobile networks->3G Data and uncheck it.
Obviously with this off, you wont be able to connect to web, get emails, download apps, etc... But if you live in a 4G area like me, all I do every once in awhile is flip on 4G from dropdown let it sync or do what I got to do then flip 4G back off so there is no connection anymore... This will save so much of your battery but it is up to you to check things when you need to....
I hope this helps some people because it helps me a lot... I always recommend this to customers that come in my store if they are not depending on work email and such...
Let me know if you have any questions!
You can hold down the power button and click Data mode to toggle 3g
I have done those things since I've had this phone in august and everytime I talk about getting great battery life the haters come out and say well you didn't have sync on blah blah. Freaking retards. Especially if you are sleeping why not turn off sync for the email that is not going to come anyways. I haven't seen the battery life yet as I did since eclair though.

interesting thread i am going to try some of these suggestions
I get 56 hours using Ultimate Juicedefender.
Wow...i use to get great battery life. I'm using lowest brightness setting, sfr, and ultimate juice defender and getting only like 16 to 24 hours of life.
What else are you guys doing? I use to get 50 hours but not anymore..
I thought I knew all the tricks in the book. But I use my phone constantly. Above average I would say.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
I am not sure, I keep lowest brightness and keep data off almost all day except for occasional checking but maybe 10 minutes total of data being on... I have noticed with EC05 battery life lowered even on complete stock... Most people in my store hve epics and all have suffered worse battery since the update... It didnt matter if it was OTA or OTW...
Maybe try and get a new battery...
I think the reasons the 'haters' come out is simply because you're stating your getting better battery life and then revealing you're castrating your phone. It is a smartphone after all. It's supposed to do all those things you turn off. This isn't a phone which is only supposed to make calls. I mean, if I wanted to check my email once a day, I'd simply do it while I'm in front of a computer.
I don't believe I'm one of said-haters but possibly providing a bit of information on where they're coming from as well.
I think it's well documented that Android phones pretty much suck in terms of battery life, especially when compared to Blackberry. Man, RIM got it right on that aspect.

How is that castrating your phone? I can still do everything else on the phone... You don't need a constant data connection to use it like a PDA. Do all tabs have a constant data connection? No, so are they not going to be considered PDA because they lack internet sometimes? no
I am sorry to say but if your managing your phone and doing things to better, that is not castrating, that is good device management and what should be done so it runs how you want...

Well, it sorts of like taking a porsche and not pushing it past 2nd gear. Some people are happy with it, some are not. On one hand, battery saving posts can be thought as misleading, if the premise is that you dont compromise any functionality. I prefer to charge my phone everyday and not worry about battery, but when your battery is dying when you need it in the evening, than one is of a different opinion entirely.
One thing which I realized to late, is if you are at work in the office or somewhere with wifi, you can toggle 3G off and not lose any functionality, since wifi uses a lot less juice.
I have tried I new battery, I have three that I alternate between. I have no idea what has happened to my phone. It could be the phone itself

And I did say from the beginning what it does and what you loose from it... The only reason it was posted was to try and help people who may be newer to android and needing to squish extra minutes out of their phone for the day... Or they may find themselves not near a charger and almost dead and need their phone so turn off data to preserve the battery... I mean it doesn't "cripple" your phone to turn off data... I can still play angry birds, check my calendar, call people, text, etc. You don't need your phone to have data to use its features...

"8. Frequently use the native task manager to free memory.. Long press on the big button to access task manager."
This is wrong advice. This actually increases battery use. The frequently used applications stay in memory so that they will not be loaded again when needed. If you purge the memory like you recommend, these apps will have to be reloaded every time, which significantly increases battery usage.

It's not wasting memory, it's just sitting there doing nothing in case you launch it soon again. If that memory is needed by another program, Android releases it immediately.
Try this yourself. Launch a game, then exit. You'll see the game still in memory. Then launch other apps and games. You'll see that the first game is no longer in memory, because Android saw that that part of the memory is needed elsewhere. It's all automatic and it works well. There's no need to fiddle with it. As I said, fiddling with it actually increases battery usage, because frequently used apps have to be reloaded every single time, instead of being called back from memory.

I have to disagree with this. Quite often I have noticed that after playing some game my battery still keeps draining like hell.
I know that Android is SUPPOSED to work as you said it would, but there are quite a lot of rogue apps which don't behave like that.
So unless you are 100% sure that your apps are not rogue apps in any possible situation I also have to suggest to use the "kill all" once in a while.
I don't do it often, maybe twice a day but it helps.

I agree, yesterday I barely used my phone. 1 hour and 40 minutes of screen on time, 3G, Sync, Whatsapping most of the time that I used it, wifi, too. Downloaded a few apps maybe 10 minutes of games. It was at 40% when I went to bed 15 hours later. I barely touched it! LOL.
I don't mind though, this is a FANTASTIC phone. I wouldn't change it for any other phone at the moment. I will probably get an extended battery case from Samsung in the near future. It's a case AND a battery ALL IN ONE! Woopie! lol.

I am starting to believe that it is a hardware fault..If lucky it could be because of the battery. You could try to order another battery and see how it goes.
If not so lucky then its something else in the phone which is almost impossible to fix at home.

My simple solution. Buy juice defender ultimate. Its cheap only less than 9 dollars. Set it to extreme and configure each app. Then go to market and search 'gothic'. Select the darkest and most plain black wallpaper. You are done! I am getting 2 days on stock rom with this setup. With about 20% of the time surfing the net via HSDPA or 3g.

I'd have to agree. Task killers are generally a bad idea.
Sure, there are poorly coded apps that stay in memory and use up CPU cycles. Those are apps that needs to be closed via task killers. But is that really the solution?
What you should do is NOT use such apps. If you do continue to use those apps, you're just supporting the developer for his poor coding. In that case, you're on your own.
OP: Try not to get too antagonistic. This is after all, a discussion forum.
Here's an analogy just for fun....
General consensus: You don't need a case for your phone.
Argument: You do need a case for your phone because SOME phones have antennae issues and a case will alleviate those issues.
Weird solution: Buy those phones wtih antennae issues and then also buy a case.
Real solution: Don't buy those phones with antennae issues! (wink wink)

+1 to this, task manager was a good idea in the old days (eclair & froyo), but gingerbread does a great job in memory management, there is no need for "task management kill" everytime you exit. Although I am a bit conservative on "frequently killing apps in gingerbread will actually decrease your battery life", but certainly, doing so will not improve it.
Using the 'Clear Memory' feature in Task Manager will stop and kill everything. Some widgets, apps will stop work. So that feature is extremely kiddish imo.
But using ATK won't do it as it has an Ignore list, if its set up properly then its the best.
Regards.

With all gripes over battery life, I thought it would be a good idea to create a list of steps for newcomers that will help make battery life better.
With these steps I am getting well over 24 hours.
Feel free to add some and I will update the OP.
1. Flash a rom.. I'm using Lightening Rom 2.0 with KG1
2. Flash a kernel.. I use Chainfires KG1
3. Use Titanium backup to freeze any crap you dont need. There is a guide on here already about this.
4. Disable fast dormancy.. *#*#9900#*#*
5. Wifi Sleep Policy set this to Screen Off.. Settings>Wireless & Networks>WiFi Networks>Menu>Advanced>WiFi Sleep Policy
6. Manage your radios.. Use the power widget to turn off BlueTooth,WiFi, GPS, even 3G when not needed.
7. Screen brightness.. Set this as low as you can whilst still being readable.
8. Frequently use the native task manager to free memory.. Long press on the big button to access task manager.
9. Monitor what apps are using battery.. Menu>Settings>About Phone>Battery Usage
10. Use a static wallpaper.. Live wallpapers are nice but draw more power than a still image. Dark backgrounds are best.
11. Full overnight charge with phone off.. I found this makes a difference.
12. Change the frequency at which your mail and widgets update. Instead of 30 minutes or whatever try 1 hour.
13. Turn off AutoSync when not needed. Menu>Settings>Accounts &Sync. Note.. This will do what it says and stop any app or widget syncing though..

I'll only comment on the points I can share my opinion with:
4. didn't change a damn thing for me regarding the battery, it just made switching betweens 3g and H slower.
5. will try that, but won't it turn wifi off when the screen is off thus disabling any sync via wifi when screen is off?
6. common sense not to leave everything on all the time
7. auto brightness does a good job for me, a mate uses lowest brightness and has no advantages besides having problems reading from the screen sometimes
8. just use it to end apps/games that won't stop after using them like KiesAir
10. true
11. doesn't make a difference
12. sure but whoever needs (e.g. for work) push (like me) will have to skip that
13. see 12.

With about 20% of the time surfing the net via HSDPA or 3g.

juice defender is my last option to squeeze more time out of my phone. still with my general usage I get around 36h our of one charge, mostly between 24h and 48h depending on how much I use it AND how good the reception is (better reception -> more battery life)
OP deleted.. This was supposed to be a usefull guide for newcomers but soon descended into a viscious disection of all my points. **** you all. Twats.

I found a guide somewhere on the internet on the best way to calibrate battery stats on a rooted device when I had my old hero and I use it a lot to this day so I decided to share the best way to do it here. If there is in fact a thread about this already in our forums I apologize but I could not find one. So here it is.
Step 1.
First and foremost charge the phone to 100%(Even if it says 100% wait about 5 minutes or so just be sure.)
Step 2.
Once it is at 100% go into data/system (using root explorer) and delete the batterystats.bin file there.
Step 3.
Unplug the charger and reboot to recovery, wipe cache and dalvik cache and wipe battery stats once more while you're there just to make sure they're gone.
Step 4.
Power the phone down and plug it back in. Charge it to 100% while it's off (the battery bar can be deceiving so even once it shows it's full give it five more minutes or so to be sure) and then power up.
*As a side note, if you are using stock kernel, or a kernel without the 100% battery mod then your only going to be at 96%. Thanks to Glennkaonang for reminding me of this.
Once it is booted to the OS you should now see that the battery bar is at 100%. (please note that when it's going through the "Android is upgrading" thing it can take 1 or 2% off the battery if you have lots of apps)
Final step.
Wait for the phone to die completely (to where it shuts off on its own) and let it charge to 100% while the phone is off and power it back up. Do this step at least two or three times.
After that you should have a fully calibrated battery and have no more messed up battery reporting.
Photo of my average battery life just for fun.
Everybody enjoy! If this helped you please hit thanks!
*Thanks to whoever it was that wrote this up in the first place. If I knew who it was I would give proper thanks.

Unless my batt % reporting goes wonky between reboots, I don't ever wipe stats. It doesn't necessarily increase your battery life, but it does appear to fix incorrect reporting.

Wipe batterystats and fix permissions working well after each kernel change but I will give a try.

I didn't think it would improve battery life either but it does. Maybe not a HUGE amount but it definitely does help a little. Plus it will give you the correct percentage rather than showing 100% when it's really only 95%. Lol. Anyways, to each their own.

It thought someone from Google talked about this before and how it's unnecessary?

Yeah this is kind of a more in depth way of doing it and it seems to help a bit more.

It's not work on my phone

Maybe it's not working on your phone because you're using the stock kernel which doesn't have a Battery Life Extender cosmetic MOD.
It's just cosmetic, actually it's still the same 96% as all other Android devices do.

That's pretty much what I was going to say. Lol. I need to add that to the OP.

This doesn't do anything other than fix incorrect battery logging, it DOES NOT increase battery life in any way.
Not even a tiny bit. Nada. Zip. Zero.
Dianne hackborne covered this on Google+ and said repeatedly that it doesn't extend battery life in the slightest. She would know as she wrote the code I believe.
Placebo effect in operation here. Plain and simple.
Thanks a bunch.

Why do you insist on bumping this? No new information has been uncovered, nothing has changed.
The only reason I can think of is that you are looking to stock up on thanks.
I did this before I even found this thread, save for I use a Battery Calibration app from the market instead of deleting the .bin file. (App does it for me.)
This was the result.
Word.
Great guide! I haven't saw a calibrating guide either. I think it should be sticky!

Why do you insist on trolling my stuff? Maybe you should spend your time doing something useful instead of wasting it on something that obviously doesn't matter to you. I bump it so new users can see it. If you don't like it, don't look at it.

I wasn't trying to troll your stuff. I appreciate that somebody created this guide (albeit now proved to be ineffective/useless) as an informative resource for others. That being said, this information is easily found everywhere, especially with search.
Please understand, if everybody bumped a thread they created every few days because they thought it was useful, nothing new would ever show up on the first page of the forum. It would be the same threads appearing over and over.
I wasn't trying to offend you, I just think that bumping dying/dead threads is counter intuitive to growing this forum community.
Thank you.
It is in a sense misinformation though. It doesn't calibrate the battery, merely wipes androids battery usage statistics, which are only for reference to the user not the system.
Although included, the only pseudo calibration is charge fully, discharge fully then charge fully. This process wipes battery stats anyway.

I have never calibrated my battery and get almost exactly the same battery life as what you are getting. All this does is wipe the stats.
