[Q] Swype on EVO word search window - Vibrant General

My terminology is probably way off, but what I am wondering is, on my friends evo with 2.2 when you want to go back through a word say you typed hello and you want to go back to between the H and E. On my Vibrant (running Obsidian) it has this little ball I need to drag through the word. Now on the evo its a window that lets you actually drag your finger over the word and a window appears above your finger to show where you are.
Wondering if there is a way to get that function, not sure if it has to do with Swype versions or if its built into the android.

it is in the android. I have complaints about those functions missing from Vibrant. With my wifes Nexus she can highlight and copy from anywhere. It is not that way in the Vibrant. there is a few things like that. I am not sure if the dev's can fix it. I have not seen one rom with it.

copy/paste?

So on my G1, you could just hold shift and use the touchscreen to select text to copy it. Is there similar functionality hidden somewhere on the nexus one?
its the same android OS, actually newer version. i doubt they would take a feature out.
Just hold down the trackball, that's what I do. I'm assuming you're talking about a field where you entered text?
Press and hold works too.
While on the browser if you want to select a text press menu > more and select text and the rest has been covered by previous post.
There is no copy/paste on the Nexus One. Apple have a software patent on it with the iPhone.

You have no idea what your talking about see previous post and Nexus One runs android which has it, apple can't patent it because its been out as well as the tech however they can patent how they specifically implement it.

I'm pretty sure he was making fun of Apple... trying to patent things they stole from others... Like half the code in Mac OS... or 90% of the technology in the iPhone....

Well, that and the fact that the iPhone didn't have C&P for years.

Thanks! I tried searching on here and in the google help for the nexus one and couldn't find it anywhere.
I've only used the Android on Samsung Galaxy, and was frustrated by the fact that its user interface varies from application to applications. To do text selection, cut, copy for example, you press and hold until a pop up letting you select/select all/cut/copy. This is how it works in messaging and an application called Andoird Note. However, if you go to the brower and do the same, a pop up with ask you if you want to save the picture (although your finger is pointing not to a picture but to text). In order to perform text selection then copy in browser, you press the menu button first. Whereas pressing the menu button in the other applications will not let you have access to the text selection/copy function.
Is this version of Android still the same?
Hmm, this is really frustrating as I used copy & paste on mu 3GS all of the time for e-mailing web pages and copying text messages etc. Now it's not even possible to copy the contents of an e-mail... at all. The copying in the web browser is pretty sucky too since there's no time to edit the selection if you missed something.
Even so, I would like even that much in all applications. I can't even copy part of an e-mail into my notes app ¬¬
Does anybody know if there will be a fix for this?
Not as of yet. Definitely a missing feature.
I dont think anyones done it as good as WinMo yet. Iphone and Android both leave alot to be desired with copy and paste.

Yeah that's true, I forgot all about WinMo copy&paste. It's just so well thought out. I really like the Maemo method, where you select "mouse mode" or something and then select text like a computer; that's fairly intelligent of them, although I'm not fond of the "corkscrew" zoom
and there's no need, since Apple have no "pinch to zoom" patent in Europe (that I'm aware of)

This could slam the door on the Iphone for me.

Hey
This device is slowly racking up the checkmarks that have me miss my iphone less and less.
The htc_ime keyboard was a huge one...many other gems have just about sealed the deal. The functionality has just about overwhelmed the usability advantage of the iphone (which it had to do!).
My big issue is copy paste feature....which i needed extensively on the iphone.
Specifically the ability to copy a whole page.....not the page url, but whole page...images and all.
Unless I'm really losing it, the N1 one is incapable of it.
Wondering if rooted, this function exists.
I appreciate any responses.
Thanks
Most apps allow copy and paste. Try doing a long-press on the text and look for "select text" then select the text using the trackball. Pressing the trackball will automatically copy the text.
Then you can paste in most text fields with a similar long-press and "paste"
Thanks
I have been using my finger ala iphone to acccess the text and try to move it down but it only gets a small amount of text.
ill try the trackball.
Why all the bad press for Android and the Nexus?
I don't really understand. Granted, the guy is obviously an Apple fanboy, but, there are a lot of negative reviews out there. No multi-touch? Give me a break.
I can't post a link yet-- search "google-android-personal-thoughts" for the Boy Genius report.
while android OS may not have some of the features of iphone OS, and yes the controls are definatly not as streamlined as iPhone, Android OS can do many, many things iPhone users can only dream of (ESPECIALLY if your iPhone is not jailbroken).
The iPhone OS, while being very intuitive and streamlined, feels like it was made for children. Everything you do in the iPhone OS is linear and controlled. This even goes for the App store, where Apple controls what apps can and cannot be distributed through the Appstore with an iron fist. If iPhone OS is your home, Apple is your strict dad.
Android on the other hand is much more lenient. On the Nexus One, they even give you the option to "jailbreak" (root) your phone out of the box! All you need to do is type in one simple 3 word command from your PC's command prompt.
Also, most of the apps on the iPhone appstore are garbage. Sure there may be over 100,000 apps to download, but 80% of them are useless iBeer/Flashlight apps, dumbed down games, or broken applications the so called devs cooked together to make a quick $0.99 off anyone who is eager to spend their money on something that looks cool on the description.
Dolphin browser has a "read it later" option.
Don't know if that counts.
Have NO idea what sixcoronas or melkers sic posts have to do with my question which is simply is there a way to cut and paste and entire intact page...not an url of the page....which, I said, is done really well on the iphone, gasp! (must be a really inflammatory thing to say for some reason).
Anyway, Couldnt do it with the trackball.
When highlighting text the most i can copy is a small paragraph.

Just curious as to why you would need this feature... perhaps there is a better way to accomplish what you're trying to do, without having to copy/paste?
You could try Any Web Copy from the market or some kind or screenshot app if you don't need to manipulate the text.

copy and paste on vibrant

I was able to copy and paste on the Evo from regular web page text but can't seem to do it on the vibrant...I can only seem do it with an input field. Does the evo have an extra program for that I can download?
It works on my Vibrant. Just use the Menu key, choose More and then pick Select text. Then, select the text that you want to copy to the clipboard.
1. Menu -> More options -> Select Text
I noticed that too, don't like it at all.
Hrrm, I think that using the menu to copy/paste works rather well.
Thanks, I come from an iPhone and then Evo which both seem to have universal copy/paste that works the same way (Evo copied apple's method almost perfectly).
I was using the dolphin and xscope browsers, but now I see how to do it on the stock Vibrant browser. Many thanks
The stock Android method of selecting text (which the Vibrant employs) is really quite awful. Keep in mind, also, that solution was assuming you used a trackball for navigation. But with these touch-only phones, you're stuck using your finger, in an inaccurate fashion. Yuck.
I agree: the iPhone method (with that handy magnifying glass and easily adjusted tabs) is really ideal. Copy and Paste is one of those solutions that they really nailed. Hopefully, someone can release something on the market to 'borrow' that solution.
Other than that, the TouchWiz additions that are straight-up rip-offs of the iPhone UI are stellar. I'm loving the Clocks and Calendar apps. Top-notch stuff.
Lol I'm I'm the same boat, the c/p on the stock android is awful after using the iphone and evo, they got that right for sure.

FlexT9 Speak, Trace, Write, Tap Keyboard

I was lucky enough to get this keyboard free from Amazon, but knowing how good it is, I would easily pay for it now if I had to:
FlexT9
This keyboard does everything, and I have found it to be the most accurate, (in portrait at least cos' I don't use in landscape), that I have tried with my fat fingering!
I see there are posts about it in other phone forums, but didn't see any for Atrix, so thought I'd make people aware of it.
It is probably one of the best. Keyboard. Since it does everything and very well
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
still has some problems..
like not being able to swipe .com or .edu etc.
how sometimes the word i swipe isn't right and I don't want to completely delete the whole word when I backspace.
the delay on pressing a button when you hold your finger there to get numbers or ! and ? etc. take too long.
it's a great alternative to swype though. :] glad I got it off amazon too

[Q] Convert Hero to dumbphone

Hi. Here's the deal...my elderly parents are travelling this winter in another country. International roaming is expensive, as is international travel, and we're looking for as many ways as we can to save money. One of the ways we've considered to deal with both of these problems is to buy a sim card where they are at, rather than bringing their phone from home and paying outrageous international roaming charges. This is where Hero comes in...I have an unlocked HTC Hero that I could let them use. The problem is, they are intimidated by technology, and having a capable phone with lots of features is overwhelming to them. I was wondering if there's a way I can lock the phone down so it goes to the dialer and nowhere else. No lock screen, no email, no Android market, no text messages sent or received, none of that, just the dialer to make and receive calls. Ideally, I'd like to be able to return it to normal functionality when I get it back, but if this is a one-way thing, that's OK, too. It is currently running Elelinux-7.1-Hero-v3.6-Light.
I apologize profusely if this is a silly question...I'm new at all of this.

It's kind of easy what you want...but not every thing can be erased
1ownload eles ROM
2. Open the archive with WinRar or other app that you use
3. Go to /system/apps and you will find all the app there with the extension .apk
4. Delete what you think that they won't use (but be very careful): for example market.apk (you said that they don't need it)
4. Close the program and you will see that the rom is more lighter
5. Flash the rom
6. Enjoy
For the part with the lock screen i don't think i can help you...
Hope you get work done
Stefan
The lock screen part is really the important part. The other apps can still be installed, just abstracted away from my parent's eyes, if they're locked into the dialer. I guess I wasn't clear enough when I described what I was looking for. I want to make it so that the dialer program is the only program accessible to the user...when they press the home button, I want it to go to the dialer rather than to a launcher. When the screen goes off due to inactivity, I want it to go to the dialer right away when any button is pressed rather than showing a lock screen. On iPhone (sorry, it's a platform I'm more familiar with), there's a jailbreak app called IncarcerApp that can do this...is there anything similar for Hero?
Lockscreen
Hi there! If you want to get rid of the lock screen what you can do is go into settings on the phone then Cyanogen mod settings then tablet tweaks and in there, there is a tick box or similar that you can press to disable the lock screen!
Hope that Helped
Thanks for the tip, PP337, but that's still not what I am looking for. I did some Googling last night, and I found a lot of developers refer to what I am looking for as 'Kiosk Mode'. Unfortunately, everything I found on that is in the context of creating a new app, rather than using an existing one.
I'm obviously not making myself clear enough, but I'm not sure how I can phrase it more clearly. I really hope we won't have to go buy a junky SIMlocked Nokia phone that we'll have to throw out in three months when they come home.
i can't understand one think....why is it so hard to unlock a phone??? especially when it's so simple...
Stefan
Unlocking a phone is indeed simple, for you and I. But for an elderly person, particularly one who is unfamiliar with technology, being confronted with a screen full of app icons can be intimidating. I tried to get my mom to use the Android phone as it is, and she is terrified of breaking something or doing something wrong, to the point where she won't use it for those fears.
I have to say, I hadn't expected it would be this difficult to make this 'open platform' do what I want it to. If it were iPhone, I'd be done by now. Disappointing.
Could you not just remove all the homescreen icons? Can't remember which launcher comes with that ROM, but if you install launcher pro for example, you can remove all the icons even the dock. You can then choose to have just one homescreen and just the dialer icon. Or you could leave it blank to just select the dialer button to make calls. Then disable the lock screen as described above. Would that be ok for them ?

how old are your parents that you say that they "can't unlock" a phone... Both my parents use android on their phones and don't have any problems....
Don't want to be rude or things like that but it's easy on android...

She's 72, and in the early stages of Alzheimer's. He's 70 and has a severe learning disability.
I tried the suggestion someone posted about LauncherPro with only one icon. She accidentally long-pressed an empty space and the menu came up and she didn't know what to do. I was able to tell her what to do because I am here now, but if that had happened when I wasn't around she wouldn't have been able to cope at all, for fear it was dialing some 1-900 number or doing something else she didn't want. I'm shocked that it isn't possible to lock Hero into a single app, but it seems it simply isn't. Thanks anyways for all your help.

Are they traveling alone? That sounds like something you should worry about more then just having a phone for them
You could use adw and lock the desktop by pressing menu and choosing 'lock desktop'. That would prevent any accidental menus popping up. You could also hide the status bar from adw settings and disable the lockscreen from cm tweaks menu. You could also download a dialer widget (https://market.android.com/details?id=dialer.impact) and set that as a widget on a single homescreen and lock the desktop on adw launcher.
Hope that helped
