I am flashing my epic back to stock and I am having some issues. I am using Odin3 v1.61 and Odin3 v1.3. They both seem to freeze almost half way through, it stops at factoryfs.rfs. Does anyone have any ideas? I am using SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar in my phone spot and s1_odin_20100512 in my pit spot.
I got it.. I am just dumb. I didn't put the .tar file in the pda spot. Not sure what I was thinking.

did you flash the dk28 modem before flashing Viper?
I did.. but I think this is where I went wrong. I wasn't sure how to flash just the DK28 Modem without linking a tar with it. So I flashed the DK28 modem with a 2.1 tar.. How do I flash the DK28 without anything else using ODIN?

Hmm... I'm pretty sure it should have worked either way... as long as you ended up with your baseband version ending with dk28. I'm not at my computer at the moment, but there is a modem tar file that gives you just the dk28 modem, without actually updating you to Froyo.... but I would think you should have been good either way. After Odin, did the phone reboot, and did you have dk28 at the end of your baseband version? Sorry if I can't help more... lol.
I've seen your problem happen before when the dk28 modem flash didnt take. Just do it again. You don't need another tar to flash the modem, just the modem.bin.
So when using ODIN, just select the modem bin and install?
>>You don't need another tar to flash the modem, just the modem.bin.
Why not just flash the dk28 tar?
Clean install; and will allow your GPS to fix
He already has viper rom installed and just needs the modem. If he odined dk28, then he would have to convert to ext4 and install his rom again. If he just flashes the modem, then he can go on his merry way.
Well I just tried flashing the modem again.. Now all I get when I try to power up the phone is the screen comes on with a small icon of a phone with a icon of a computer with a yelllow triangle with an exclamation point inside of it.. This doesn't look good.
Darn Noobs anyways.. Any ideas on what I did, and how I can get it back?

I'm just taking this from the ACS thread here but it looks like you need to use the modem and pit file. There is a big link in the first post.
Their instructions then simply say
1. Download from the first link and use the included files to flash the modem (check only "Auto Reboot" on the left, use the PIT in the "PIT" section and modem.tar in the "PDA" section on the right.)
Hope this helps, if not - please ignore accordingly
Edit: Well I just saw you have a new problem. I think I would just flash with the DK28 Extended tarball found here. This will be a full odin flash, modem and all and you'll have a fresh DK28 that is prerooted and ready to go. Then you'd just need to do install CWM 3 and then flash your ROM of choice. I recommend Midnight, but Viper is popular too.
Thats what I just downloaded and tried to install with Odin. Now I cannot boot into recovery or anything. It just comes up with an icon of a phone and computer on the screen with a yellow triangle in between them. I pulled that battery, put it back in with no luck.

I've seen that screen before.... so it's fixable. I think the key is gonna be if you can still get into download mode, and get Odin to work. I once had to run Odin 10 times til it finally worked. Somw people say to remove your sd card when using Odin... but I don't know if that's the key. Also, are you following the directions as to the buttons on the left, and leaving auto-reboot checked?
Here's a question: what is happening when Odin stops doing what it's doing? Did it run thru the install and say 'pass' at the end? And in the dialog box, did it say (something like) succeed:1 fail:0? At that point the phone should reboot into the new system.

Its odin time now; no other choice. So go ahead and hold 1 and power to boot into download mode and flash the dk28 tar.

I had to do a bunch of things, and don't know what finally made it work for sure but my theory. . .
I was able to get it to boot into clockwork by plugging it into the charger. But even after reseting everything it would still come up with the screen I describe before.
The way I believe I got it back into download mode was to take out the battery, hook it to the USB cable and then hold down the # 1 with the power button. Could of just been a conicendince though.
Anyways... it is fixed and working with ViperRom.

Not really sure why it keeps doing this but after an ODIN to DL09 with re-partition, my phone just boots to stock recovery no matter what I do...cannot get Android to boot...A CM7 install went bad earlier during the install and since the reinstall has a reboot in it, it was stuck in a bootloop trying to install it...Anyway why isn't ODIN taking care of all of this? Do I need to ADB and clear something? Thanks for any help guys

I had this happen to me the other day, you likely downloaded the wrong DL09 odin files. This is the DL09 you want (I bet it's several dozen megs larger than the one you have, if you did the same thing as me).
Flash that with the re-partition PIT and then you should be good.
Not sure what the issue was, but heimdall fixed it, thanks, will go back and odin DL09 now

Had the exact same problem. Went to Tmobile and everything to get the phone exchange but it was out of warranty. Then i did this and it worked like a charm: taknische.com/2011/12/14/how-to-unbrick-a-hard-bricked-samsung-vibrant/
What rar file u flashing? Stock or the j16 rar
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
I was using Bionix and it was so freaking slow, so I attempted to flash stock on it and forgot about the different filesystems, and that hardbricked my phohe like in the article. So I did the instructions in the article and then I flashed stock deodexed Froyo, choosing "Re-partition". Then I rooted it and flashed a kernel with lagfix to make it a little faster.
So long as you can get it to turn on in ANY fashion (anything on the screen) it will flash.
If you can't get Odin to recognize the phone or flash it (e.g. it fails during operation and hoses you) either use Heimdal or turn OFF your computer and start from zero with it. Samsung's USB drivers are flaky and will flip out on occasion which hoses your flashing attempts and leads to soft "bricks."
I've actually managed to recover from what I THOUGHT was a hard brick this way -- I couldn't get ANYTHING to come up on the screen for a while -- but eventually did manage to get the computer --> phone icon back up, and from there was able to flash.
Note that ALL of the flashes other than the ORIGINAL T-Mobile code are non-formatting, non-wiping flashes. If you flash one of those over something incompatible (e.g. a custom rom) you will get a boot loop back into recovery that will not start. The solution is to flash back to the ORIGINAL T-Mobile code and then go from there.
Make sure you are using T959UVJFD.tar and 512.pit file when you flash with odin when having these types of issues. Just be ready for the really loud and annoying t-mobile chime upon bootup.
Man I hate that chime with a passion.
Sounds like the issue may be on Odin's end. Did you plug your USB cable into your computer and open Odin before plugging into your phone?
Alright I'm now going to ask.
Been searching for two days and am ready to take a hammer to this thing.
Posted already in stock rooted thread:
Really having problems here.
Downloaded both (on PC) Odexed and DeOdexed no data tar.rar's and the md5s matched..
Extracted the tar.md5 and attempted to use in Oding and get md5 mismatch and it won't flash either file.
I've downloaded so many times in the past day in a half it's silley
Just trying to get a completely stock system so I can clear up all the issues I've been having with all the ROMs and seem unable to do so.
Anyone have a working PC Odin'able tar.md5 of stock (rooted or not I don't care I can fix that) MF9?
Dying here.
Tried Stock Rooted Deodexed (no data wipe) zip and it won't get past yellow Sprint screen now. :/ arrr
SOOO f&cking pissed.
Edit.
Looks like I'm able to start Odin the Odexed full .tar.
Hopefully I'll have a working phone again and stick with my personal tweaking just adding mods (from great the great devs and contributors) instead of whole ROMs for now.
I'll update if this finishes well.
Well not going well - still stuck at yellow Sprint boot screen (going on 5 minutes now) after reboot. And phone is hotter than hell.
WELL. CAN'T GET PAST YELLOW SPRINT SCREEN!!
I can get into download mode I Odin'd Stock tar and it completed but still no boot. FUUUUUU .....
----
I have no stock recovery I can get into.
I can ONLY get into download mode and even then when I flash any available ROM I can't get past yellow sprint screen.
I've been at this for almost two days (12 hours yesterday and another 6 today)
ANYONE have any ideas?
Still nothing:
Wasn't able to get into recovery so:
Created a .tar.md5 of twrp 2.5.0.2 from the recovery image.
Flashed that via PC Odin and got into recovery.
But That still leaves me in a bind.
Flashed Stock MF9 kernel.zip and see what happens.
NOPE still stuck at Sprint screen.
Going to keep on f'n with it...
F it. After installing stock recovery and factory resetting a few times the thing is still jacked up.
WiFi will not stay connected and the phone is useless to me.
Worst experience I've personally ever had with a device

First off go back to stock MF9 which will be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2375523
You can use odin for it.
Then go to stock recovery (volume up + power button) and do a factory reset.
After let it boot and settle down. Once you have pass initial screen. Go turn it off and odin the tar files from which you downloaded. If your using 3.07 of odin then let it run even if it says odin not responding. If your using 1.85 make sure you delete .md5 extension (if you want the deodex version and your using 3.07 also delete .md5 extension appearently it will give you md5 error.) Once thats done you will boot up and will be rooted.

I waited for for over 3.5 hours for that to download.
But by that time I'd already said F it.
I appear to have two lemons instead of phones.
Both are packed up with call tags/RMA's.
When I get my refund(s) for the phones I might be back.
At least I know have every possible zip, tar, tar.md5. .img and other file I could possibly need ready.
I posted some more info that may help others with regards to phone setups, and WiFi problems here.
so here is what happened i installed a custom rom and it looks like it wiped all my data then i put my phone into odin mode installed the proper tar file and odin 307 and i flashed my kernel and on the "samsung galaxy s4" screen if anyone could help asap that's would be great.

Had the same issue couldnt find a fix was stuck on it for like 6hrs and then I accidentally dropped my phone and it fixed it.. but the best bet is if you have full stock mf9 just take in for insurance, the only reason I couldnt is because i was rooted and I was in the process of the tar files when it fixed it self also something to add before I dropped it I flashed back to the mdl version of my rom, yes I was still stuck on the splash screen but 30 mins later or so is when I dropped and it fixed its self so maybe try the tar file for mdl and make sure you do a factory reset

make sure your MD5's match and make sure your downloading the correct version of the rom.
