issues installing apps / unmounting and mounting sd card - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

First off if moderators think this is pointless please move or delete thread!
I've noticed in the many threads for all these android builds people asking about , why I can't install apps like angry birds or such, and many people have answered to unmount and mount after install, well it was brought to my attention today that some people think that because android is running off the sd card , if they unmount something bad will happen, well nothing will happen and it does what everybody says, it will let you install such apps.
Unmount sd card , install, and remount sd card
So here's a fix that ARTO found for anyone not being able to unmount sd card to install apps, thanks ARTO!

5.if everything worked right then nothing should happen except it moves to a fresh line in the emulator .
if you did everything right you should be able to go into settings and unmount your sdcard from there.
hope this helps some people i was going insane trying to figure this one out took me about a week to figure it out.

FYI, I've tried to unmount SD card from settings menu in every Android build I've tested but I still can't get this to work, I still get Application Not Installed...
And when I check the setting again, the unmount SD card setting that was previously greyed out is selectable again...so it doesn't unmount

My response to that is the same lazy ass people that can do a simple search to figure it out, are the same ones who dont read a damn thing on the first page of every thread and just download, then ask questions later to something that is answered in first page.

Well MY response to that is perhaps you shouldn't ASSUME that just because I'm asking a question it automatically means that I don't read threads when in actual fact I DO and haven't come across a solution that WORKS.
Do YOU have a WORKING solution for this problem?
ARE you going to post a WORKING solution to this thread for this problem? No, I didn't think so.

I totally agree, and I posted this hoping for builders to add the info to their threads. I searched to see what I found in the matter , but only threads of builds come up, and some people are too lazy to search within a thread.

I don't know of any other working solution, since unmounting the sd card has worked and I've always been able to install angry birds and any other app.

I have tried most of the android builds available. And never once had an issue with unmounting the storage card.
When you select unmount storage card there is nothing that should be greyed out. You should get a response about the card unmounting and it is ready for safe removal. (Although we can't really remove it) You should also see notification in your task bar. The setting then changes to Mount storage card.
So if you can't unmount your card then look to see what might be different with everyone else. Maybe try a different storage card. Also don't have your phone connected to your pc when trying to unmount.

I have this problem too, I can't unmount the storage card, when I click on unmount, it appears to work but it revert back at the initial button "unmount sd card" and there are no notifications. I have no idea whats cause this. what I can say is that I use titanium backup pro for restoring my apps, maybe it has something to do with it...
edit : Found the fix !

I know that this has been asked before. And yes I searched and couldnt really find an answer.

Can anybody let me know how to store apps on SD or if its even possible... I want to store apps from market there...
Thanks for any input...
ok i dont mean to sound like a ****, but there are about a million threads in big bold letters that explain how to move apps to sdcard - on the first page.
so i dont believe that you searched.
read the forum and dont create new threads when the answer is on the FIRST page.
MOds please close/delete this thread.
and - if you just want to store the .apk files on your sd card there are plenty of backup programs in the market that do just that
OK I found this thread; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=512743

Check to see if you have anymore room on your phone.(if you don't know how to do that then I wouldn't recommend trying to move your apps to the sd card) If your out of storage then I would delete a few apps then install the apps 2 sd card app.

When I look into Settings -- SD Card & Phone Storage it says that I have 34MB of Available Space in Internal Phone storage. I have installed on the phone only Dude's ROM and the apps which come with it, nothing else, no additional apps...
I was able to root my phone & install Dude's ROM so I should be able to do this, with some help
-Sighs- all right. First thing you need to do is make sure your sdcard is partitioned properly with ext2 and fat32. To check, do "busybox df -h" in terminal and see if /system/sd is there. If not, partition your sdcard using paragon partition manager. There's a thread in the developent section that gives an overview of how you can do this. Second, download Cyanogen's pimped out recovery image. It's on the 1st or 2nd page of the development section under the title "Pimped out recovery image" follow the instructions to install it. Now boot into recovery (home+power) or from terminal "reboot recovery". There should be an option for moving apps to SD. Click that, wait for it to finish, reboot and you're good to go.
Meltus found SUPER easy solution to my problem...
Simply type in; chown system.system /data/app into terminal and you are good to go.
No NEED to partition the sd card or any other BS....
Thank you Meltus

Use this method. It seems to be the easiest way to get apps2sd done intially, once you finish this you can use Partition Manager to partition a newer larger SD card if you didnt already, and use that.
okay.... how can you not get apps2sd to work by reading the linked thread i up posted in my sig. which is basically stickied in the dev section.
i think you need to search a lil harder.
basically, partition your sdcard first either DL the apps2sd app or read the guide within the guide (listed in my sig) to do it.

A2SD - Help needed

I just posted this in the "General" forum. I take it that it's not a good thing to remove your SD card when you're running A2SD. I wanted to see if my apps were "really" running on the card, so I figured I'd just pop it out, see if the apps worked or not, then pop it back in. Well, the apps didn't work, but after re-inserting the card, I don't see any of the apps I had installed.
Anyone know how to fix this?
General is the proper place for this thread. Please avoid double posting threads in the future, especially in the inappropriate forum.
Restart the phone.
And, no, it's not a good idea to remove the SD card while running Apps2SD. You can seriously corrupt your ext partition that way, forcing you to reformat everything.

Thanks for the helpful reply, Tkirton. I ended up getting my icons back using "a2sd install", but they weren't working right. Forced shutdown of almost everything when I would try to launch them.
I just did a factory reset wipe and am reinstalling PlainJaneT2 right now. If they're still jacked up, I'll assume that I corrupted the ext partition and just re-do everything. Then I'll be smart and immediately create a backup!
Thanks again.

Android (any build) and SD Card unmounting

Hi,
I couldn't find anything in regards to my specific problem.
I'll try to explain.
When i connect the device via USB to a PC and activate USB transfer, all goes well.
I can copy files to and from the device, without any issues.
After that, as read on the forum, you should unmount and remount the SDcard in Android, to be able to access the files.
Easy does it, right?
1. I umount the SDcard in Settings --> SD Card & Phone Storage.
What happens is, that it keeps 'unmounting' until the screen goes off or it just keeps unmounting until i tilt the screen or press a button.
2. I see that the card is unmounted, as the amount of MB/GB went down to a minimum. Though, instead of the "MOUNT SD Card" i still see "unmount SDcard".
In other words, for some reason, the unmounting does not work.
Note: If i reboot the phone (the only way to access the files copied), and the first thing i do after Android is started is Unmount the SD Card, it works.
Tested:
1. Several WinMO Roms and Radio's
2. 5 Different SDCards (the work it was to copy all the roms on those to test )
3. And all the possible Android builds there are.
Am i doing something wrong?
Wow...nobody huh?
I know there's a post with a guy asking the same question. I can't remember where it was posted. I just saw it too.
Edit: Found it about 10 post below this one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=778008
Edit: Looks like the subjects are unrelated, my bad.

Ah, never mind I was happy that I found a topic about it too, when i noticed this was not quite what i needed, therefore i posted this thread.
Thanks anyway.
When I get stuck on something like this I just chalk it up to a limitation of that specific build. Then I try a new build or wait for an update.

Angry birds

I am getting unsuccessful installation.
Searched the forum and found this answer

But it cant apply to us since we CANT UNMOUNT SD CARD since Android is on it.
So what are you guys doing to make it work?
you still can un mount your card with android running.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Or use the new Hastarin kernel 8.2
When Android boots up, it puts Android into the RAM rather than run off the flash card. Unmount the SD card after boot, install the app, then re-mount it. Then all is fine!

USB Mass Storage mode CANNOT work - the phone runs Android off of the SD, hence the SD needs to be mounted for Android to work. Just in WinMo when the SD is unmounted from WinMo when you plug it in, the exact same thing would happen in Android - and then Android wouldn't be able to function... make sense?
You can use ADB with USB, but that is it. It's useful for debugging...

Arrghhhh is a standup guy and was very nice to answer most of my questions in the TP2 section. I didn't know the rules don't apply to the HD2 as well.
Anyuhow, Thank you guys. Worked like a Charm
just install kernel 8.2 ( put sd card in pc , copy zimage and folder called root in to your android folder )
Thanks everyone
Try changing the Android ROM,,,, I'm using the Mdeejay_FroYo_Sense_v._2.3_Clean its the best one so far.... no prblm no lagging,,, its working great!!

New SD card works but some apps can't find it (default gallery/Aldiko).

tl;dr
The card is tested and good (results below), the card reader is good (tested by reinstalling 5.7.4).
So few other people are having this issue, what is going on with my phone?
--
I've read and read, but no matter what I try, I can't get my SD card to work.
Here's the details of how, and what, I installed on my Sprint S5.
I'm coming from Resurrection Remix 5.7.4 MM, (where the SD card worked fine, but did have a few issues with the camera (used open camera instead) and some post reboot oddness (shortcuts disappearing)).
I first formatted card using the windows software sdformatter to FAT32
copied files to SD card using a card reader plugged into PC.
Files copied
RR-N-v5.8.2-20170304-kltespr-Official.zip
open_gapps-arm-7.1-micro-20170327.zip
UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.79-20161211114519.zip
TWRP 3.X
wiped dalvik/cache/system/data
then factory reset
added files to zip queue, Rom, then Gapps, then SU
Flashed
Phone boots fine, initial set up completes.
Tried a reinstall of apps using Ti Pro, but it failed, so started again and used google apps restore during boot. Issues with many apps. So started again, with a "fresh start" option during set up.
I took a few pictures.
I can view them immediately after taking, by pressing the previously taken image image inside the camera app.
Open default Gallery and get the error "No storage. No external storage available."
I installed a+ gallery and it is able to open the images just fine.
Default Files app can browse the SD card.
Aldiko will not download books, as it thinks there is no SD card installed
I've tried (and checking each time)
formatting in card as internal, then back to portable in phone.
Clearing the data/cache for the apps giving errors.
factory resetting
Wiping and formatting the card (on PC to FAT32), and starting again (several times).
Started from scratch again, with a brand new Sandisk card
Tried ZepherOS Zephyr-N Version (Viserion-6.1) Android 7.0
Wiping cache/dalvik only and rebooting
Same "No storage..." error, every time.
I tried ZephrOS. Right after install there is no file manager, but if I click the default app "downloads", I can navigate to the camera folder, then to the image. When I click on it, it opens the image, but still shows the same error "no storage..." even though I'm looking at the image behind the error window. :/
I'm running H2testw, but don't expect an issue, as the same error was on the previous card and the brand new card.
Can I go from 7.0/7.1 to a stock ROM without issues, if so which one?
Update:
SD card test result
Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
Writing speed: 7.15 MByte/s
Reading speed: 15.7 MByte/s
H2testw v1.4
UPDATE #2:
I started fresh with a new install of RR 5.7.4 and the card does still have issues with some apps, but is working fine with others. Open camera works fine, and the gallery access the correct card in this ROM. Aldiko still fails as it's trying to download to /sdcard
Most apps are looking for /sdcard but I have /sdcard1
If it helps, it appears sdcard is symlinking to /storage/self/primary
Anyone able to help?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, settings>apps>settings>App permissions>Storage is turned on.
Aldiko, for example, is looking for /sdcard but it doesn't exist. I'm thinking a symlink might fix the issue? But am not familiar enough with Android under the hood, to know what other issues that might cause.

FAT32 this was recommend in most places I read. I thinks it's a paths issue. I'm not sure the format would make a difference to that, right?

A fresh install would resolve any path issues. The device can't read the card, which means that it's formatted incorrectly or is incompatible. How did you format it originally? On a computer? Go into the storage menu, and if it's detected, then try using the native Android option to reformat it. Back up your stuff first.
If that fails, try formatting it in recovery.

Thanks, I know the OP was long, but I hoped the details of what I'd already tried would be appreciated. I did several fresh installs trying to fix, and formatted every which way I could in phone and on a PC. Nothing has worked.
I've kind of given up on this and have decided to switch to Verizon. Sprint sucks so bad, after 10 years I've finally had enough, so I have to replace the phone anyway.
If you know of a decent phone to get, I'm looking for a recommendation in this thread, https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/switching-to-verizon-200-phone-t3588790
Thanks for your attention to my issue. Sorry it's left unresolved. I run my own business and just can't spend this much time fixing my phone.
