Whats the G1 like?
I suppose its a good phone.
The thing is, i have a very limited budget. I bought a LG GT540 about 2 months ago and i am not happy with the quality of it, so i thought why not a g1? I have liked the G1 ever since it came out and i have only seen one in real life, ever. I can't really afford a new one or a G2 or a newer android phone.
So, could you tell me what its like?
Any problems with the G1?
It would be great if you could help!

I have upgraded mine to Froyo (the AOSP build). I have applied some of the changes found amongst these forums, and so have the new radio and enhanced memory, and I must say the phone performing wonderfully.
I don't surf on it heavily, but most apps I throw at it run very well.
As far as cons, Angry Birds doesn't do too well - it is so choppy as to be unplayable. Also, I have seen other phones that have a standard 3.5" stereo jack, and some that have an FM radio. These are two options I envy some.
But altogether, it's a great phone.

G1 is a solid android device it may not have the best screen but as far as speed man root it set cpu to a nice speed maybe compache and zx donut or superD and youll be ard maybe buy an extra battery like 4 dollars on ebay so itll last u the whole day buy your self a 2-8gb sd card thats all ya need
well my lg can play angry birds well
has a fm radio
the g1 has a 3.2" same res screen as the lg.
same camera res
i only really care about android wifi gps camera and build quality
I just don't feel that the build quality of the lg is going to last for at least 1 year.
the other htc's ive had have been phucking solid.

haha good choice and you can get the g1 for like 60 on ebay and it might come with a screen protector charger case etc theres deals out there man look around
Too be honest, I would say just save up money and get a new android phone like the g2 or maybe even a used Nexus One.
The G1 ROM section is so boring now and it is NOT FAST at all. Even with these donut roms, all you will be doing is forcing yourself to believe that it is fast.

Then get the device any android phone is good just with a simple root you can add feature, New Android 0S and removing annoying apps and the underclock speed from the carrier.

Fm radio it ok but i think tune in radio for an radio app is better then sense ui Fm radio.

Just buy it and use the latest froyo roms (see CYANOGENMOD forum, nightlies)
IMO, keyboard is the biggest thing for me. And the g1's keyboard is one of my favorites. I used sidekicks and blackberries, and was able to type without looking at my phone with all of them. I also upgraded to the g2 for a month, but returned it cause at the time there was no root.
I can confidently say that if you're into keyboards, you should save up for the g2 or just get the g1. Motorola cliq and the other motorla phones are not for me.
if you're a simple man/woman, then the g1 will be good.

True, if you could save up some extra £'s then you should get a G2 since its awesomely better & performs similar or even better than some of the new android phones out there. But if not, then go for the G1, mines been used for a year & a bit & still works great!
G1 is terrible, don't waste your time.

I bought mine a year ago and I am still totally in love with it. It is the oldest android phone but still one of the best (IMHO). I had the opportunity to upgrade it to an LG optimus, but I prefered the quality of the G1.

All of those + can be had with other devices.
Ill admit that the g1 is a cool device, but it belongs in a museum at this point.. if you can get one for under $50 in excellent shape, go for it.. otherwise, save up and snag something a little newer.

I wrote those pluses and minuses about the LG GT540 vs. G1 comparrison. Otherwise you re right there are many super phones out there if you have enough money.
G1 was a great phone. It allowed Android to sneak its way into the phone market and allowed the great N1 to make its way into the market. Now it's just dead. If you want a good Android phone, get a N1. It is still up to date with most smart phones and won't lead you wrong.
Hardware keyboards - They're great in certain situations. However, I can still type faster on my G2's soft keyboard than hardware keyboard and all I use is hardware keyboard to try and get used to it. After a few months of getting a G2, I'm still not faster with the hardware keyboard. Swype is also a great keyboard replacement, but I personally like typing letter by letter. With word prediction, it seems faster to correct mistakes.
Also, cyanogenmod 6.1 is great, but I couldn't use it on my myTouch3g. I often wondered if some of my RAM had failed or if my processor was starting to die because of how horribly slow it was yet everyone bragging about how fast it was. Indeed, it was great when I first loaded it. After I installed a few apps and a few widgets, that all went away. I tried numerous setups of swap, compcache and even left them be for weeks at a time seeing what was good and what wasn't... nothing was good. Now I'm running cyanogen 6.1 on my G2 and I've never seen it run so smooth and perfect.
If you absolutely desire a smart phone, and can get a G1 cheap, go for it. But I would personally only use it while saving up for something better. I'm aware these phones are pretty pricey and people have other priorities and they're not an option for everyone, but after using a G2 I can never go back to anything less than it.
Edit: Also, be careful buying budget Android phones. My fiancee has a Samsung Intercept on VM and even with a 800Mhz processor it is slow as dirt. It was basically unusable until I rooted it. And even with root there are still many, many speed issues.

If you are on a budget the g1 is the best most customizable android phone! There are tons of roms and you can overclock it and all other things plus its git a bunch of devs !
The vibrant has like 6 decent roms only from 3 devs

I'll agree with alan up there, even though G1 development has severely slowed down, there are still devs working on producing ROMs for it and they are all great developers and do a very, very good job.

I have tried to provide an unbiased review of Samsung Galaxy S2 from point of view of a Xperia X10 user/android user… oh btw I am writing this considering that u use custom kernels on X10!
Some background… I have primarily used Symbain phones for almost 4-5 yrs… just last year I bought my first android phone the Xperia X10! Since then I have bought many androids for myself, my friends & family… I have personally used Motorola Milestone, SE Xperia Arc, LG Optimus One and now just last week I got the Samsung Galaxy S2 (SGS2)…
this will be sort of comparison between SGS2 and X10 and my personal opinion regrading both these devices as they CURRENTLY stand
[ THE SPECS ]
The SGS2 is a beast!
The most significant difference is the screen… Super AMOLED PLUS which quite frankly is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL DISPLAY I have EVER USED! It just blows away the LCD/LED displays (compared to X10 which has LCD display) Now before some ppl catch my throat saying that “colors are not ‘natural’” let me share with u that there is a setting provided by Samsung called “Background Effect” which basically can allow u to adjust the saturation & contrast of the images on screen! For the “natural color” minded folks u can use the “movie” option… others can enjoy the “Standard” or better “Dynamic” options…
It has 4.3’’ screen which is slightly bulky in hand and little bit hard to grip (compared to X10 which has 4’’ screen) frankly the difference is only noticeable if u are watching videos…
It has 1.2 Ghz dual core ARM-9 chips (compared to X10 single core 1 Ghz Arm-8 chip)
very powerful dedicated GPU [Mali-400] which will handle any of the latest games u can throw at it! (compared to Adreno 200 on X10)
sgs2 has 836 MB User accessible RAM (compared to 280 MB on X10)
The internal memory is eMMC so there is actually an microSD card used for system, data, etc… so the actual usable /data partition is 2GB!!!! (compared to 465MB on X10)
Also the internal sdcard has 12 GB free space [I have the SGS2 16GB version] AND there is room for additional external SDCARD!!! (compared to 8GB supplied by SE for X10)
SGS2 supports simultaneous 10 point finger recognition! Take that multi touch games!
SGS2 has lots cool features like HDMI output/USB On-the-GO [but u will need to buy these adapter/cables separately]
Front facing camera and fullHD (1920x1080p) recording are few other perks (x10 can do 720p recording)
SGS2 has 1650 mAh battery compared to 1500 mAh of X10
SGS2 has HSPA+ (21 Megabit/sec) compared to HSDPA (7.2 Megabit/sec) on X10
And ofcourse SGS2 comes with unlocked bootloader (there is a thing called download-mode binary counter which keeps a tab on how many time u flashed using the flashing tool ODIN, though this can be reset using a hack )
[ ACTUAL USAGE ]
SGS2 just comfortably cruises thru menus/etc… no lag whtsoever... menu scrolling/web browsing anything u throw at it SGS2 will just devastate it
Using live wallpaers, having 10 tabs open in browser, multitasking with a game running in the background and then scrolling thru menus it doesn’t LAG!
[ THE GOODIES ]
Ok now comes the dev aspect, with SGS2 being adapted by so many users/devs, within just 2 months of release, there are already tons of ROMs/Kernels/themes/etc…
U have the freedom to choose overclock/undervolt/overvolt kernels… there are even apps to control voltage of every frequency set! U can overclock/regulate the GPU too! Some guys over at SGS2 forums run it at 1.9Ghz without a hitch! (compared to X10 which only is able to handle 1.1 Ghz overclock)
btw this doesnt mean that i dont respect/honor our devs here at X10 sub-forums... i have a HUGE respect for them and all that they have achieved and are currently doing/working on... they have done / are doing a great job to make our terribly limited device (cause of manufacturer policies) awesome & rocking
[ THE BAD / UGLY ]
Ok the screen resolution on SGS2 is really bad... I mean seriously, a 4.3’’ screen deserves 960×540 (qHD) resolution not 800x480… sure u can change dpi but then that’s NOT TRULY changing resolution…
There is no hardware camera button! It is very funny but seriously I miss the camera button…
when will they get good XENON flash in top end android devices? i really miss the xenon flash from my old Nokia N82
another problem is that there is NO LED FOR NOTIFICATIONS
A lot of defective display units are there… I myself had this problem and had to get it replaced with a new piece… also many users at SGS2 forums have reported this…
Device heats up even using stock FW… I was playing Modern Combat 2 for 15-20 mins and I could feel the back of the device getting really warm…
NOW THE BIGGEST ISSUE there are not many apps currently available which can make use of dual core processors… may be multi-threaded/multi-core optimized apps will take time to get in but currently not many apps can make use of this…
[ MY VIEWS ]
Now from this point forward are my personal views/opinions... I am not telling u to do something… this is just wht I personally feel… if u wish u can read this whole thing and say “wht a bunch of crap… he doenst know wht he is talking abt” I don’t mind that, those are ur views these are mine
The final decision if u want to buy a new phone ALWAYS is with YOU AND YOU ONLY!
As I said before SGS2 is a great device but there are some thing to consider before u UPGRADE… keep in mind that the following views/opinions are only valid if u are upgrading from an X10 to a SGS2… if u are upgrading from sub-1Ghz phone then this will not matter...
I wouldn’t call an upgrade from X10 to SGS2 a BIG GAME CHANGING thing… there is not much difference in 4.3’’ and 4’’ screen sizes… also if u have been using custom kernels on X10 (fps uncapped /overclocked) then SGS2 feels slightly smoother… the screen/image quality is obviously better on the SGS2... But honestly 16million colors (SGS2) vs 65k colors (x10) is not that great a difference, it is only noticeable in some images/videos which have heavy gradation…
The big issues is that currently there are not many apps that can use this much power… then there is the practical issue… see u can play games/overclock/etc for some time BUT most of the time (>80%) u will be running the device @ 800Mhz to 200 Mhz (lowest speed which can be set)…
Though if u are upgrading from a 600Mhz phone (with < 3.5’’ screen size) then SGS2 is a TOTALLY different experience…
One thing to keep in mind currently most of the issues faced by us X10 users (like camera not fully working in 2.2+ custom roms, stability of custom kernels) are related to the restrictions imposed by SE… thing may improve once we get the GB update…
[ FINAL REMARKS ]
So keeping all of the above in mind here are my recommendations
Why u shouldn’t jump to dual-core bandwagon? (AS OF NOW)
If you still have a few months left on you contract and if u don’t mind a few sec delay/slight lag I recommend that u WAIT FOR NEXT generation phone… I am not talking about quad core/etc… frankly CURRENTLY there is just no point for a 2+ core phone… even 2 cores is an overkill! What I suggest is that u wait for next gen technology (28nm fabrication) which will greatly improve battery life… hold on till the apps/games can actually make use of the tremendous processing power packed into today’s dual core phones…
Who should go for this upgrade?

u have the money and don’t mind spending that much for the BEST PHONE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE
u are a POWER USER and do heavy multitasking, need to play latest games at max frame rate
u want an additional phone to use (like me )
u are stuck on X10 stock 2.1 rom and don’t want to install custom roms/kernels
u are totally frustrated with the X10 and don’t want to wait for GB upgrade
why currently u shouldn’t “upgrade” to any other single core phone?
See single core phones are already very old hardware… there is no point spending so much money on a single core phone which will be outdated in next 6 to 8 months (tops)…
Instead wait for a few more months and then get a dual core phone
I hope u guys appreciate this and it helps those who are currently planning to u buy a new phone…
P.S.: I hope u have noticed that I keep saying CURRENTLY, cause all that I have psoted above (my views/opinions) is only valid for things UPTO THIS POINT (July 8, 2011 01:00 AM GMT+05:30)… technology is an every changing thing and wht is best today wont be the best (or even good) tomorrow!

I tried a SGS2 couple of days back and only one thing annoyed me the most. The home button takes ages to wake the phone up from sleep. I know it is nothing but it annoyed me a lot Apart from that nothing to complain. I will surely get it once I can go to store

i disabled home screen waking it was getting annoying... better to use power button to lock/unlock device...

b) dual core price is much larger than single core + no full usage of dualcore.
c) single core processors won't be outdated. NEVER! Why? For example in Croatia
i payed like half my pay for year old X10 and my pay is like 600 usd per month, imagine how much would cost dual core?
Conclusion dual-core is for gamer freaks... / ppl that don't get that "lag" here or there is normal thing from pc to smart phone...
Find me one pc / phone that has never had any lag in any game / program and i will ... something with stone ...

Hence another problem of pressing volume button instead of power. I had it for a day and a half to play with it. BTW was it just me or it gives an alarm that battery is full!?? Dunno why Samsung made it that way.

agree with u on some aspects BUT here is some info if u didnt already know...
dual core doenst use more battery... it only kicks in after certain speeds... so if u are idling (say 500mhz/200mhz) then only single core is active... only when u need more processing the other core (s) get active... something similar to turbo boost but the other way

OH BTW currently andorid doesn't native-ly support gpu based screen/UI/framework acceleration...

i know! its damn annoying... pulser_g2 has a dev thread going on regarding that!
What I find absolutely stupid about Android as a whole is, that you need a frigging dualcore phone to run it smooth 'ala iOS. I mean smooth as in the UI running at a constant framerate without any dips at all. That was the only reason I was looking up to Apple's devices for a while.
Then SGS2 happened. Now I know what my next phone is.

well the problem is that iOS supports gpu based acceleration of UI! which android doesnt! android depends completely on CPU for UI rendering which causes this lag... u can check even on HC this is a problem... BUT once the gpu acceleration based apis are in place then OH MAN will these things fly!

yes dude i have compared X10 / Arc / SGS2 display... wanted to compare with iPhone4 and SGS1 but couldnt get hold of those devices...
let me put it plainly SGS2 display IS THE BEST U CURRENTLY CAN HAVE...
the colors are much better on SGS2 display (again this is personal preference)...

So..the only way to have the better screen is super amoled??cause if you want the best phone you need this kind of screen but it is made only by few manufactures..like samsung and some htc..so there not much choise!

see thats the thing... its not the case that Super AMOLED is the best...
its more on personal preference... w.r.t. display u can ur self check out SGS1, Nokia N8, SGS2, Arc, HTC Sensation...

just wait for a few months (2-3) till then the prices would go down by 15-20%... also that will be time then next gen processors hit the market...

Well SE in hardware is always in time of the needs if you can see arc was the best smart phone in 2011 above SGS2 and now there is a dual core xperia smartphone on the target but of course it will come when the software is totally ready for that i would like to see the xperia duo

ios runs smoothly because it's a much simpler platform than android. If apple ever get the balls to revamp their os to support homescreens and widgets, I am pretty sure the performance would dip significantly.

I took some photos with the SGS II and the quality was superb.
Lightning conditions were not good, but still there was very little noise,
the picture was sharp and the colors vivid.
Only thing is, there was some short of pink hue in the corners of the picture.
I don't know if that's the case for this phone, or that one was faulty.
Also, the flash is VERY BRIGHT!!!!!!

Device heats up even using stock FW… I was playing Modern Combat 2 for 15-20 mins and I could feel the back of the device getting really warm…
NOW THE BIGGEST ISSUE there are not many apps currently available which can make use of dual core processors… may be multi-threaded/multi-core optimized apps will take time to get in but currently not many apps can make use of this…
Nice review, but these things made me happy that I haven't bought a SGS2 yet!! I would miss the camera button, led, and especially devective unit which are much of them... Very much... Great phone, but lacks of the most standard functions of a smartphone... Maybe that's why the phone is so thin... Also I've heard from many SGS2 users that there is a some kind of yellow shine on the left side of the screen. Super phone, but little things that aren't worth for this price... It's a smart choise from me to wait till any quad-core phone, and I really hope there will come a very sexy Nexus Quad-core phone. Camera is also nice, but for real recording get a camcorder LOL.
Before fanboys start screaming at me, PHONE IS GREAT but just these things...
And DooM, don't let our negative things/or things the x10 has but SGS2 not have spoil the fun. Enjoy your new super phone!

Doom, you also talked about higher resolution. Well, that's not possible on AMOLED screens. They can only support up to what the SGS2 now has...
Hi there, this is my first post and I have an interest in this phone. Can owners of this phone please briefly state the pros and cons of this device as it would be a real help for me (and others) to decide whether I purchase this phone or not.

only thing i could call a con and that's really stretching it is it's relative bulkiness.

Actually Android 2.2 is pretty old already, that would be a bad thing. But we already have a stable 2.3.5-ROM so it is no big deal at all. Not the best aesthetics? I think it looks pretty expensive if you ask me. The galaxy s of a friend of mine does not look any better than the u8800. As far as I know the camera is not that great, and the megapixel do not provide any information about the quality (my old camera with 3MP makes better photos than any phonecamera, simply because it has a real object lens and a bigger sensor).
In my opinion the real advantage of this device is that you get the speed of devices that cost twice as much. Of course those devices have a much bigger screen, do not forget that.
There is one situation in which the processor will be too slow: Playing some n64-games; for example Zelda - Ocarina of time is not really enjoyable. Also the screen is almost too small if you do use the touchscreen-controls (you can use a ps3 controller).

Just to clarify, from lack of prestige, I meant it as if somebody asks you what phone you have, and you say Huawei U8800, they'd probably think that you have a cheap chinese model. It's not really a big thing for many people but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Pro:
- Good specs for the price
- Good battery life on 2.3.5 (unofficial)
Con:
- Low quality components (crappy Bluetooth, Mic, Camera, Internal Memory - big but useless without hacking)
- Real problems with official Froyo Roms, which should have never go out on the market with so many bugs/issues (not going to sleep properly, unstable wifi etc etc)
- No official Gingerbread support, even Huawei actually owns the 2.3.5. license
- Lack of knowledge/customer support from Huawei (if you have an issue, they replace the handset and you get an identical handset with the same problem)
I would like to say, that this phone would have been one of the biggest fails on the market, if there was no support from excellent developers.
It's only because of people like Dzo, Stockwell and Genokolar, that I didn't throw this phone in the bin.
Huawei is fresh in the phone manufacturing industry and this handset reflects this aspect loud and clear. This is why no one really heard about it...

Thanks for your input. It's very disappointing that you get such a great value smartphone which is spoiled by basic features and low quality components. I'm really doubting if I should get this now.
everybody has a set of pros and cons on this phone, and i dont think its a good idea to make ur buying/non-buying decision purely basing on others comments..
for me, its only mattering "pro" is the high price-performance ratio..
(and one more now, after seeing such an active on-going development effort to make this phone better..)
and no "con" at all (as this is what i expect from a product of this price..)
thus if u think single-core cpu is a "con", no official support is a "con", little brand recognition (outside china) is a "con", u can alway pay a few bucks more to get dual-core, famous-branded models..
and honestly speaking, this phone is indeed NOT intended for everybody..
its just not as idiot-proof as iphone (as with most android phones..), not as good-looking (to some) as sensation, not as ego-boosting as sgs2, etc..
but its definitely easier to hack with, to manipulate with, and to brick with (not sure on this point though, as more flexibility does not necessarily imply easier brickability..)..
imho, its more suitable if u r the kind of person who would like to play with android instead of just using it..

Between £150 - £200 is my budget. The U8800 is more towards the lower end of my budget and as I can get it at that price brand new, it is quite appealing. However, you can get other phones like a second hand Galaxy S for a bit more while still being within reach of my budget.
What I'm looking for is killer hardware as well as a good community which makes the phone easily hackable and 'tweakable.' Regarding the U8800, it has exactly what I'm looking for at the price point but if it falls short of basic things like the touch screen, then what can you do. Being a previous ZTE Blade owner, I was extremely impressed as basic functions were not sacrificed.
There are a lot of people that switched from the Blade to the U8800 and are quite happy it seems. I think you do not have much choices here - luckily. You can either get the galaxy s or the U8800, as you already said yourself.
If the galaxy s is in a good condition and if you can live with a phone that has no warranty anymore, I'd say go for it. For me, none of my phones ever had any hardware-problem, so I could have easily bought all of them in used condition.
It is just that buying something off ebay is risky. I do buy little stuff there every now and then, but no expensive stuff - if the seller just lies about a "little" problem and you want to return it, you probably won't see your money again. If a friend of yours sells you his used galaxy s, take it. That would be the best choice in my opinion. Either get a galaxy s that you can inspect and try out before you buy it or go for the u8800.

Bluetooth was reported to be problematic, yes; some people reporting it to be fine (I just use the headset sometimes and it works perfectly well). Mic also works perfectly fine for me. Camera is not as good as with other handsets, yes. It takes 10 minutes to make the memory useable, but I admit, what Huawei did there makes not even sense.

Froyo does not matter to me as it already is old and I would not recommend anybody to buy this phone if he wants to install Froyo.

Instead we got the community. As long as everybody stays here at xda-devs or at modaco we will get support. When everybody leaves in one year or maybe in two, then you are pretty much f...on your own. On the other hand, in a year all the problems should be sorted out.

Exactly, and now it is a fast and stable phone with android 2.3.5 - at least for me it works perfectly well.

I have this phone and bought it about 3 weeks ago. It's my first smartphone and did a little research on the reviews.
From my perspective, being a total noob, so far I've been really happy with the X5. Sure, battery life is horrible and the camera could be better but I've managed to take some nice shots and some OK video. For me it's great to have this capability in my pocket and liberating to be able to catch up on the day's news and podcasts siting by the pond in the backyard in the morning.
Strangely perhaps I haven't been having problems with the reported wifi problems nor any problems with the Hi Suite software from Huawei.
I have had a couple of little glitches but nothing a quick re-boot hasn't fixed.
My first android has exceeded my expectations but I come from a point of nothingness.
Towards the end of it's 1 year warranty I plan doing all what seems to be the fun things to do like rooting and other fiddling around
Even after reading about the X5 shortfalls I'm still happy with what I have and don't feel inferior at this stage.
I bought the phone for $AUD260. Have spent around $25 on apps and around a further $25 on accessories...like extra mini USB cables for my various stations where I can charge the phone, a in-car charger just in case, a case and some screen protectors.
I've been having fun on my X5 and that's what it all comes down to for me.

Hold on, I get 2-3 days of standby when I do only use the phone for about 1 hour calling per day and about 20-50 sms per day. If I play n64 or something it lasts a day, maybe another half day. Actually this is the best battery life I ever encountered with a handset. I use 2.3.5 which seems to have a good battery management and SetCPU has 245min and 806max, scaling conservative.

You're exaggerating with 3 days... The most I ever got on this phone is 51h and that without using it at all, mostly on stand by the whole time...And I've tried ALL Roms available till today.
I'm 100% sure that NOBODY got 72 h of this phone.
You probably didn't had many phones and don't have a good term of comparison...This phone has average battery life and only on Gingerbread Roms. On any Froyo Roms, you'll be lucky to get 20 h out of it.
Pros:
If you can root it and install a good ROM, it can become really fast, faster than many android phones (except dual core).
Very nice price.
It seems expensive and has a really sturdy exterior. The screen crystal is also very hard and resistant to scratches.
It is fully featured (sensors, very nice screen, high resolution, etc).
I had not the slightest problem with any of its subparts (bluetooth, GPS, camera). (Maybe I am lucky, though).
If you root it and install a good ROM, video recording becomes very good.
If you dont play with it all the time, battery lasts for one day or two.
You catch friends with iPhones 1 and 3G looking at it with envy.
You catch friends with iPhones 4 looking at you with envy, as soon as they hear its price and find out about the prices of apps at android market. (They paid for many of the apps you will get free).
Cons:
As with all smartphones, if you play demanding 3D games, in 2-3 hours you will need to find a wall socket (so this is not really a con).
Something with the multitouch doesn't seem perfect. I don't know why.
It's not an iPhone.
It has not a dual core CPU.
It's not a tablet.
If you are amongst some friends with iPhones, you will still not have one.
Conclusion: I am very happy with the X5. My wife wants to steal it from me, and she plays with it all the time. She already has finished many games on it (Angry Birds, Angry Birds Rio, Diversion, Cut the Rope and others). I managed to read two books on it, while on vacations.
It was a good buy.
I joined this forum actually to get some android help from ya'll you see well I live in Brazil and my parents in the USA, so I dropped my iPhone 3G (yes 3G not 3GS) and the touch screen cracked, so I would like to know from you guys that have more experience with Android if the Nexus One is a good phone still - compared that I only had a iPhone 3G which is not that great nowadays lol. So like the title of the topic says, is the nexus one still a good phone to this day compared at least to my old phone?
The community is also very active with updating it to the latest android it seems, and besides all I do with my phone is send SMS, read e-books and play Angry Birds and other games of that type, and a better camera would be welcome also.

Yes, the Nexus One is an awesome today still, but something that's a tad annoying is the power button. It might start to fail relatively early or just completely die and a replacement costs as much as a used Nexus One.

I read online that if you root your phone, you can use the trackball to power it on and other methods, does it still apply to the latest version of android that N1 runs?

and is not about newer or such it is more about cost and as I am in Brazil, the phones here are expensive and I don't have much to work with anyways, so the N1 is a good and very affordable option and already comes unlock, well I could root the Desire HD but hey, the N1 already comes unblocked lol

To be able to unlock your screen with either the volume buttons or the trackball itself, you would need to flash a custom ROM.

I don't know what planet you live on, but it's not the planet called "Reality." I have a SGSII and it has all of these great specs, but quite honestly, it's an inferior phone to the Nexus One. The Galaxy nexus and the Nexus S just blow it away.
There are so many things you can do with native android that you either can't do or are just a plain old pain in the ass compared to my nexus one.
The only things the Galaxy S II has on the N1 are internet speed (only in certain areas), camera and screen size/brightness.
Get the N1 and don't listen to spec hounds. Specs don't mean crap.

I believe you're the one that needs reality check.
A phone with extremely annoying and non-repairable touchscreen problem, faulty power button construction that makes it vulnerable and prone to failure, lousy sub-par GPU, slow USB transfer speeds, and you're suggesting it over much newer and better ones?
And to the OS argument - plain Android OS, at least till ICS, is crap - and IMHO, ICS adds nothing in exactly those areas that need adding. Any overlay will add LOTS of capabilities to it - be is crappy TouchWiz 3, much better TouchWiz 4 or also much better Sense 3/3.5. I posted enough comparisons of my own that show exactly where and how pure Android or CyanogenMod fall short and can't reach, no matter how you try.
Shortly - for the price of used or new N1, there are MUCH better options today. Sorry to disappoint.
It's not a bad phone, and some of my friends are still using it. Its quirks are livable with, if you don't demand gaming capabilities, and if you don't mind to occasionally turn off/on the screen when everything messes up, especially during navigation. If you already have it, there isn't much pressure to upgrade, if you can live with it. But if you're making your decision today - N1 is a bad decision.
And personally, neither me nor my wife found its quirks to be livable with. I lived with it for a year, because there were no better options at the time. My wife moved to another phone after 3 or 4 months.
If you want a good phone - see what fits your network. Being in Brazil, you probably need 850/1900MHz band phones, and all good MSM8x55 family models (Desire HD, Desire S, Desire Z/G2, MyTouch 4G/HTC Panache) are 900/2100 or 1700/2100 band. If some of those models exist with the bands you need - the suggestion is indeed to move to one of those. It'll be completely another world from Nexus One.

Way to lose all credibility in four words.
There are plenty of phones that came out after the nexus one that are better candidates. As others have said, the nexus one has a few too many hardware flaws that make it really crappy as a daily phone versus being a nice tinkering phone. The buggy digitizer and abysmal internal storage are two things that irritate me daily.
I would recommend checking out the Sony Ericsson Neo. The mytouch 4g is nice too; also known as the htc panache. If your budget is really tight you can look at the LG optimus one or something equivalent. You will still get the Google services with tradeoffs of using manufacturers' skins.

My iPhone 3G that I let it fall and crack the touchscreen -.- I mainly used it for sending SMS and calling, reading ebooks, and playing games such as Angry Birds, Jetpack Joyride, so nothing heavy on the phone, hell I barely used the camera since I always had my digital with me when I wanted to take a picture.
And I totally forgot about the BAND stuff, because when I bought my iPhone 3G to Brazil from the USA, I just unlocked it and voila I was using it, so now you got me, and I was reading a topic (not on this forum) about the Galaxy Europa (or Galaxy 5) and there is many differente basebands you can download, so I don't know if specific basebands only apply to Android phones or all phones, and I just got lucky with me iPhone 3G

mostly are around the 80s, so if I do buy one for 80 bucks is it worth it? The chances of having a headache with the phone are they common?

EDIT: Internal Storage, but can't you use a microSD card and plug it into the phone and it will extend its memory, or is the SDcard only used for certains items and the internal for other stuff - but isn't there something that lets you choose the partition size?

nexusone in question is an HTC phone made carefully for Google for developing android os in its first days and was the best in those days and still it is one of the best ones i believe, you just have to bear crappy start button which in some phones fail to operate and the Sonys freaky super LCD screen seen on late models. in my option super amoled screens are waaay better which can be seen on first models which i believe are better in quality from the newer ones ı used both and the early model which ı still keep as a spare phone is still working with no problems while the late model one which i sold did had problems with screen digitization and start button and comparing two of them ı sold the newer model as ı kept the older one so if you are buying a nexusone it is like lotary you can be lucky or unlucky depending the factory conditions while it is been made if you ask me i would recomend to buy one with amoled screen and buy it by seeing and touching it fizically.. but with the money you may spend on a nexus you can get a samsung galaxy S 16 gb and it will run flawlessly the new versions of android and plenty of memory in it if you are in to games with its 3d engine it will be great for you while you can keep lots of books to read in its huge memory yes it is not good looking as nexusone but it will last longer because it is plastic and drop resistant because of it....coming from iphone you will get use to it quicker since they look similar goodluck
I have been checking the price of nexus one in ebay for the last few days, it seemed that the ones in the 80-100 range mostly have problems while a functional ones will cost you 130-150 at least. I would highly suggest you to get a mytouch 4g instead for around 150.

nexusone in question is an HTC phone made carefully for Google for developing android os in its first days and was the best in those days and still it is one of the best ones i believe, you just have to bear crappy start button which in some phones fail to operate and the Sonys freaky super LCD screen seen on late models. in my option super amoled screens are waaay better which can be seen on first models which i believe are better in quality from the newer ones ı used both and the early model which ı still keep as a spare phone is still working with no problems while the late model one which i sold did had problems with screen digitization and start button and comparing two of them ı sold the newer model as ı kept the older one so if you are buying a nexusone it is like lotary you can be lucky or unlucky depending the factory conditions while it is been made if you ask me i would recomend to buy one with amoled screen and buy it by seeing and touching it fizically.. but with the money you may spend on a nexus you can get a samsung galaxy S 16 gb and it will run flawlessly the new versions of android and plenty of memory in it if you are in to games with its 3d engine it will be great for you while you can keep lots of books to read in its huge memory yes it is not good looking as nexusone but it will last longer because it is plastic and drop resistant because of it....coming from iphone you will get use to it quicker since they look similar goodluck

Today I found an AMOLED Nexus One on ebay for sale, and it says it is the T-Mobile one but it is still unlocked to other GSM carriers worldwide right?
The Galaxy S is bit to pricey for my budget at the moment.

MyTouch 4G I have not been able to find one for 150, but seen many 200 and up (way up)

I did not metion samsung as i know they are crappy. I have both n1 and Desire HD and Desire HD just outpreforms the n1 on every aspect. The n1 is still a good phone, but not a good choice to buy right now.

Right now it is not the best choice. Definetly you can find better phones around. But we are talking about a smartphone quite old. But I love it, great community even if now the interest on this phone is gradually decreasing.

That said. The Galaxy S II Hercules would be a great phone if it had dev support or native android. Since it doesn't it loses a lot for me.
The Nexus One Desktop Dock is fantastic. There's no bloatware and the phone is pretty fast. Again, it may not have the specs of nearly all phones coming out today, but being a developer phone with native android makes it very competitive with most. When your talking about spending less than $200 for one versus $800 for the super phones of today, to me, it's a no brainer.
I'm using the GSII because it's faster and has a bigger brighter screen, but the bloatware & TouchWiz are just awful. After 48 hours with the phone, I rooted it and found that the choices for ROMs were paltry. I'm running "Dewizzed" and the battery drains in 10 hours.
No matter what the specs are I find these issues very troubling and dang near unacceptable.
I'm saving my sheckles for another Nexus. Either the S or the Galaxy...maybe both.
So is it safe to assume that on a tight budget of 80-100 bucks the best bet would be to buy a Nexus One (since it is already unlocked, and not a bad phone and great community support and hell even made it to use the 2.3.7) Also I would acquire one that was in good condition and with charger batteries and etc
So is my notion above right?

Now, I'm looking at the oldies here, and I know this Monster has practically all OSes. And I'm getting a brand new one for cheap.
Please let me know whether this is still worth buying, or should I look at another phone?

I don't see why not? Specially if you're into customization and I don't mean just the themes for Android, I mean changing your roms weekly...I cant seems to stop flashing new roms over and over lol. With that said tho, it's never going to perform as good as a stock device, and being that the HD2's stock is a dead system you might wanna think about it.
Other then that, it has a huge screen, it does everything that most of new devices do, cept the really graphics intensive games, and some minor rom bugs, but what you get is pretty much best of both worlds of Windows Phone and Android, you dual, triple, quadruple boot it. Heck I'm still using it as a daily driver...threw my HTC Radar away and went back to HD2.
HD2 is a great device, but it lacks 4G, which is noticeable to me.
I've noticed the newer phones seem to have a better GPS, I have an HTC MT4G, and the GPS locks a LOT quicker than the HD2s.
Still, I don't really like the MT4G very much, so I starting to think what I would like to get next?

4G connectivity is not a huge consideration outside of the US yet, and definitely not in India (where the OP evidently lives).
@OP, I personally don't see the HD2 as being worth it any more. The hardware is too outdated, and whilst it's cheap you should instead get a Nexus 4 which has far better hardware at a very low price. My particular issues with getting a HD2 now would be the awful GPU (can't even run temple run smoothly) and the screen which is now at quite a low PPI and doesn't have proper multitouch. At the end of the day it all depends on the price you can get it for.
you can get them around nashville tn for $65 and at that price i would HIGHLY recommend it.
i just put the nexusHD jellybean ROM on mine (coming from windows 6.5) and it came back to life! it had been living in the bottom of a desk drawer and now its sleek and running an android OS maybe 2% of the world is using.
in fact i might get 2 or 3 more to have as backups...this thing is great just running without a SIM card on WIFI at home for streaming pandora or using as a portable web browser.
Get the nexus 4 from the play store in usa... see the nexus 4 Indian thread in the nexus forum about how to get it to India. ....

If you want to buy the HD2. My on attention guaranty. Mine was more than 3 times But I think I have god motherboard now and works almost 6 month, Remember this is pretty old device and have only 2 finger to screen control - more don't work and let me think what next. Battery sometimes sucks. If I listing music all the time. Phone keep battery enough 10/11h without using display(control music by volumes buttons) The funniest thing is is still faster than cheap tablets from hypermarkets and have incredible support from xda
Now I only waiting when my HD2 will be broken or see highest battery which can withstand about 1 week :laugh:
yep! i'm thinking of having a couple of these around the house to play w/ new ROM builds and to use as bluetooth devices for my wireless music jamboxes and as a quick web browser and search tool.
no sim card needed! just use wifi
Unfortunately I don't have that much money.
I found an Xperia S for the exact price of my budget, so I'm going with that.
