Somebody please explain ODIN to me? - Vibrant General

I need to un root my phone to send it in to t mobile. I was told by a fellow XDA member to use an ODIN method and I read through the instructions but I do not 100% understand it. Can somebody please do an easier to understand guide???
Thanks in advance

odin is a program, you run it and it resets your phone. search: odin.

Ok and when I run it do I transfer files over onto my phone from that sticky or something?

Do you know how to put your phone into download mode?

Yes. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe I go into download mode, turn on odin, then transfer like 3 files and then from there I have no idea what to do. Do I restart the phone, reboot into recovery, or what?

Do not plug your phone into the computer before you open ODIN.
1. Open ODIN and select the .pit and .jar files
2. Plug your phone into the computer via usb cable. You should see the COM port turn yellow in ODIN.
3. Click the start button in ODIN
4. The phone will do the rest
5. Just wait until all is finished and the phone starts

Two files
Edited for lack of speedy response lol

Is that it? That's all I do? Sweet. So just to check, ODIN is a computer program-not a phone program, right?

You have to extract odin with winRAR if you didn't know that already

Yes it's a program for the PC. I use Odin3 v 1.70 found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821625
Another important note I forgot to mention:
If you use this T959UVJFD.tar file you don't need to uncheck re-partition
If you use any other official firmware T959UVJI6.tar or T959UVJK6.tar for example then you have to un-check re-partition.
I always use T959UVJFD.tar before I flash anything else so I can re-partition but that's just a personal preference.
Don't worry, it's pretty hard to brick the phone.

And once you understand odin he's very agreeable

You sir are correct. ODIN isn't hard at all and actually I'd prefer using it to flash all of my ROMS. I even made a 301k resistor jig so I can get into download mode without the octopus technique. Plug and Play baby....

Where do I find the JI6 pit and tar files for odin?
I'm running Axura 2.0.5. However, I want to try one of the new JK6 ROMS.
I would like to use ODIN to go back to JI6 first. Where do I find the proper JI6 tar and pit files????
thanks!

Ji6 pit tar?
seen it before, now i can't find them.

T959UVJI6.tar is the last official release from Samsung/t-mobile. If you use that you should have no problem. When I got my phone it had T959UVJFD.tar on it. This version is the oldest.
T959UVJK6.tar isn't an official release.

flash jfd... the ji6 tar file is missing dbdata.rfs
just some words of advice. I just used the JI6 tar file, and pit to ODIN my phone back to stock. Odin completed its job, phone rebooted, saw the white vibrant logo, then it went into recovery and gave me some read error message. Something about a "data" file missing.
did a google search, seems like the JI6 tar file is missing the dbdata.rfs file.
Another forum suggested using ODIN again but this time use the JFD tar file, which has the appropriate dbdata.rfs. Sure enough my phone is back to stock JFD now.
Don't know why, who ever uploaded that JI6 tar file, why didn't they include the dbdata.rfs?
anyways, I might be wrong, but thats what just happend to me, and found the solutino doing a google search. i'm all good now.

Odin vs. heimdall

So the title says it all...which do you use and why?
myself, I use heimdall...for many reasons. One being I own no windows computers, another being I prefer open source software. A third being it has always either perfect and is easy to use.
The reason I ask is because odin **seems** more cumbersome from what I have read...the pda button over phone button thing is silly and still needs explaining time and time again, as well as still causes noobs issues...also I have read a couple times its less reliable.
Anyways, share your thoughts!

for me it really depends on what im flashing...if im doing just the modem.bin or just recovery, or anything like that, i use heimdall
if i need to completely default my phone for an upgrade or cause i jacked something up, then its odin time!!!

+1. Exactly the same for me. And to the OP, it seems for most things, Heimdall IS WAY MORE RELIABLE, and I have not once seen anyone complain that it is not, like I HAVE SEEN people complain about with Odin. I think Odin is sort of sloppy. But. my vote is Heimdall.

The times I have had to heimdall has been fine. Used atlas pit file and extract the Odin tar file and do each piece in its respective slot... Are you saying for the convenience you use odin?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
Agreed, for me heimdall is good for more intricate tinkering but odin's perfect for a complete reinstall. Also its not that hard to know how to press only two buttons in odin, I'm an android/rooting/flashing noob and even I got it the first time. People just need to thoroughly read and understand instructions before doing anything like that with their phone.
tapatalked from my rooted/debloated stock eb01 Fascinate
Heimdall if you need to flash one or two things. Odin if you need to flash a full Odin tar with repartitioning since heimdall kinda sucks at repartitioning.

heimdall blows odin away

They are both great and have much more flexibility than some realize. I have spent a lot of time with both bricking and unbricking my phone on purpose to really understand these programs. The main advantage once all is said and done is that heimdall will recover a phone that odin can't. and all this talk about PDA only is great advice if you don't know what you are doing, but it is not true. Also this idea about using some other button than PDA will permanently brick your phone, NOT TRUE, it will make you odin again with repartition checked and the pit file in place to wipe everything. And in the rare instance it doesn't use heimdall. the two main things to understand is IF IT GOES INTO DL MODE it can be fixed, and there are tricks to force it there if it wont, no not a jig, that is absolute last resort. Second is from everything I have learned and received feedback on neither odin or heimdall will work reliably if at all on win XP, but work with Vista and 7. We should all know by now what works or not with Linux and MAC.
Since I use Linux there is only one choice - Heimdall.

Can't update after soft brick recover

So I just recovered from a softbrick using the Heimdall method. I'm stoked because I'm no longer bricked but I cannot flash anything via Odin now, even after I have re-installed my Samsung USB drivers. It always gets to SetupCS connection or something like that and just stays there. Is there something I'm missing?
What driver is on your system? Is it the fascinate or the nexus s? If you're coming back to some level of stock from a GB rom you might still have the GB (nexus s) drivers. You might have to reload the froyo fascinate drivers for odin to work.

the atlas 2.2 pit file goes in the "PIT" section at the same time as the tar.md5 file goes in the "PDA" section and re-partition checked......when those two files are placed in their respective slots and re-partition is checked, THEN you hit start on odin. If that doesn't work, place this file on the root of your SD card and rename it "update" but without the quotation marks lol: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=556632&d=1301538910 Once you do that, boot in the stock blue recovery using the 3 finger method and select "apply SDcard/update.zip" and let me know what happens

Alright so I just tried adding the PIT, repartition checked, and added my ODIN package, but still had the same problem. About to install the CWM All file you gave me and try that out.
*edit* Well something just happened. My SD card just got corrupted and I cant even format it now. What the hell is going on?!
*edit 2* OK so the SD card issue fixed itself. Just had to hit format a billion times. I'm now running an OTA update to my phone from Verizon as I had to go all the way back to DI09.
*edit 3* I'm now sitting on ED04 fully stock but away from my computer. I will try again once I get home later on tonight. Just out of curiousity... has anyone else other than kidserious and the other guy had this problem or have experience in dealing with it?
So checking in again. I am still freezing at "SetupConnection..." in Odin. No luck at all with flashing the CWM ALL file as "update". I'm completely out of options at this point. Help?

Let me rack my brain and think........I will get back to you.
RESOLVED
Alright so I finally figured out my own way around this. It was actually fairly simple and I'm a bit ashamed I didn't think to try this earlier.
Hopefully this will be of assistance for any future issues. Thanks Kidserious for your help.
*edit* So I just found some instructions for uninstalling the Heimdall driver from your phone. I'm booting up after a fresh flash of DI01 and hopefully this will work. I'm guessing that even though I'm installing the samsung usb drivers back to my computer, they arn't reaching my phone, and this may be the issue I've been facing. *pauses for a bit to test theory* Yep. That was all it was. Sorry for taking up so much room on here... just FYI to everyone though. If you soft brick and recover via Heimdall you HAVE TO UNINSTALL THE HEIMDALL DRIVER OR NOTHING WILL WORK.
FML. So it didnt work as I had planed. After I flashed my edify rom I samsung bootlooped. And Odin still isnt working for me.
I'm giving up for tonight. Functioning on DI01 stock ): at least it works...
Alright so I'm fairly certain I've narrowed it down to one fix but I seem not to be able to fix it. I need to install the samsunflg husband drover back to my phone and uninstall the heimdall driver. I've tried it twice and or hasn't worked either time
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
---actually resolved----
Sorry for spamming this thread everyone, even though I've really been the only person posting in it anyways.
I have found my fix. So I was never able to fully uninstall the Heimdall drivers so Odin wouldn't recognize my phone and would hang at "Initalization."
So I took a weird strategy and actually purposely soft bricked my phone. Scary to do but the outcome was well worth it. Here is what I did.
1.) Puropsely soft bricked phone
2.) Put it in to download mode
3.) Went to device manager
4.) Contrary from Heimdall Uninstall instructions phone will now show up under the general usb devices areas. Find this area, expand, and right click on Samsung Composite USB Device.
5.) Go through the options of manually picking the usb driver you want to use.
6.) Install chosen standard samsung USB driver. You may get many options in the list but pick the Digitally Certified one.
7.) I didnt unplug the phone after I flashed the new driver so open up Odin and flash your DI01 Stock Recovery with Atlas v2.2 PIT and Repartition checked.
8.) Once finished phone will be on DI09 fully bloated stock and should work with Odin for any further flashes.
*edit* It appears as if you need to flash the samsung driver to phone evrytime you want to flash something via Odin.

How to Fix Almost Any Bricked Vibrant

I recently bircked my vibrant with a bad kernel flash, and it wouldn't get past the Vibrant Samsung screen. I fixed it, so I decided to post how I did it here, to hopefully help someone. I am not sure if this works on newer Vibrants. If you have one of the first batch then you should be fine.
Step 1
You need to get ODIN and the stock Samsung/T-Mo 2.2 rom. I am not allowed to post outside links, and the file is too big for an attachment, so you will have to search for it, try googling "Download Samsung Vibrant Stock Rom"
Download all the files and extract them somewhere where you can find them.
Step 2
Once you have those downloaded, start up ODIN, for pda, select the pda (.tar) file you downloaded. For the pit file (make sure you extract it, it should be .pit not .rar or .zip) select the pit file you downloaded.
Step 3
Now, pull the battery, and re-insert it. Make sure your phone is turned off, and hold down VOL+ and VOL-, then plug in the USB cable to your computer, then phone. (DO NOT press the power button on the phone) Wait a second, and the download screen should now show up. Simply press start on ODIN and wait for your phone to get the the unlock screen. All done!
If this worked, please reply and tell me!

I am not sure of any ROMs that still require odin, as CWM is a lot easier to use. I would reccomend going back to stock, rooting the phone, then installing CyanogenMod. If you're fast enough, you can get it done and have a working phone in about an hour.
Well the only mode I can get on the bricked phone is download mode with the jig.
After that ODIN works. I've never been able to get ADB to play well on this computer.
There is an ODIN version of stock 2.2 I may try if I don't find something newer. Thanks! I did find a guide on how to make an ODIN ROM but it is a bit late for me to do it...

Cannot setup phone (unfortunately, setting has stopped).

Hello, today i wanted to flash a new rom on my galaxy s4, rooted it a while ago but hadn't flashed a rom. Went to Rom Manager and was gonna do a backup but it was giving me an error so I could not do the backup. Since I had saved all my pictures and everything on dropbox I just went ahead and went to recovery mode and wiped my data so I could flash the new rom. When I tried to wipe the cache partition it just rebooted my phone. When the phone started up I get all the usual setup from TouchWiz. I started setting it all up as usual but when I get to the final screen (learn about key features) I hit finish and then i get the "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped." not allowing me to continue on to my home screen. So as of right now my phone is basically a paper weight because I can not to anything. Has anyone else encountered this ? Is there a work around ? Will appreciate all help.
P.s. Sorry if there is already a post about this, I just don't frequent this page very often and don't quite understand how all the search functions and all that work.

First off what firmware are you on. MDL, mf3, mj6, mj9? To check go to settings - more - about device and check build number. If it is mf3 than you need to go to the general section and read how to odin the md5 file same as other build numbers. You just have to take your time and read.

I would try to odin the mdl firmware in download mode. You can get the firmware at sammobile.com. You'll have to register but it's free. You'll download a zip file. Use 7-zip to extract the .tar.md5 file from it. Use that in odin, PDA.

Check to see if there are any popups that you have to allow before a connection can be made. Sometimes they appear behind the ODIN screen (on the PC). Also, make sure you have the proper drivers installed.
If you can get to clockwork, just copy a new rom to your SD card and flash it. You'll be up and running in 5 minutes.

This should be the exact same, as the OTA. What problems are you having?

Minor but annoying, some settings randomly gray out..s cover stops displaying and today modem went batty..
Im having some similar problems myself. Not too bad but some lag and few setting grayed out. An app or 2 ive been using regularly w/ no issues on 4.4 stock rooted, now crashe sometimes. HPEPRINT is one of them.

Yes. What do you need? I have it all extracted and have made my own personal rom base from it.

All of it... If your able zip it up and shoot me a link via pm or hangouts... Been trying to use my stock back up to pull files but that's just becoming a pain... Could've used one of the stock version ROMs to do it but some modify them to their liking and I am wanting untouched straight from Sammy

I can do that but it'll be a little while. I already have system.ext4 and cache.ext4 converted and extracted as well as the modem, patch, and kernel, etc. There are a few other mbn partition files which only odin can process so i assume you don't need those or do you?

I'm not sure about those but mainly the ones you listed already
I know it's a little late but I uploaded two bone stock BOB7 roms in my other development thread. Deodexed and odexed. Either one should do what you need. Sorry i got busy working on those roms and forgot to get back to you. I hope you found what you need with one of those roms. The system files are not modified in any way. Use with confidence.
I have downloaded the md5 file and Odin. I have Odin running and I am in download mode with my phone connected to my pc. But for whatever reason when I go to Odin and select the md5 file it always says no responding. Any help would be appreciated.

When you say, your computer says "not responding," how much time has passed, from when you first select the .tar file, until you try to flash it, to your phone?

For me, Odin would hang for a couple of minutes too. It should kick in within a few minutes don't panic, just give it some breathing room
