Typing on tab - Galaxy Tab General

Hey all,
I wanted to see how you all(the community) like typing on the tab, and if you prefer landscape or portrait.
I personally like to type on the tab in portrait using just my thumbs, holding the tab with my other.fingers. One of my issues is how small the.space bar is, a lot of.the.time I hit the period key as shown before haha.
I want to get.some suggestions on typing in landscape, as I don't know how to do it. Do you lay.it down on a table and try to use all your.fingers (like a normal keyboard)? Or do you just.use your thumbs or index fingers.

I like typing with my thumbs in portrait mode. I use my own Thumb Keyboard for this, because it has wider keys so hitting adjacent keys is not a problem anymore and (maybe I like that more) it gives a really balanced feel in the hands. With a regular keyboard I have some problems holding the tab in portrait mode while typing. Thumb Keyboard allows me to hold the tab in a more natural way when I thumb type on it (again in portrait mode).
Also, I find me using my own keyboard also much more in landscape mode. Maybe because I found a way to reposition the keys much better for landscape thumb typing.
(Sorry to advertise my app this way. This is not my intention. The subject is just interesting me. Anyway, a light version can be found in the app section. It has the portrait thumb type mode, but with larger keys (it was written for phones initially). I adapted it for tablets in the full version)

I use Smart Keyboard Pro, in landscape mode (large hands, I can still reach all the keys ) I gave up on Swype in the end. In portrait mode I have it set to T9.
Smart Keyboard Pro has settings for a super-wide spacebar too.

Love typing in portrait using SwiftKey. After using so many different keyboards something about SwiftKey feels smooth and natural.

Smart keyboard. Portrait mode. With two thumbs seems best for me.
I'm now using samsung's keyboard dock for tab. Expensive but works nice and looks great

I wish I knew how to quote using this pda app, I'm gonna try out that thumb keyboard.
Thanks for the inputs

keyboard change based on rotation?

i had a app called butler on my touch pro that would change the keyboard based on if it was slid out so null kb would pop up.
i want something like this so i can use regular keyboard in landscape and swype in portrait.
has this come out yet?
That is A very good piece of thought! Swype in Portrait mode is just perfect, but in landscape the HTC keyboard works better for me, so if there is a way to achieve this automatically (yes, I know, I can switch the kbd on demand, but it's still 2 extra taps each time rotating the screen), that would be great.

Swype in portrait, multitouch in landscape?

Basically, I wanted to know if it was possible to switch between swype and multitouch simply by rotating my DX. So, I would have swype for portrait, then rotate to multitouch in landscape. Many thanks.

it basically is multitouch with the addition of swype, you dont have to use the swype method...
Im lost...
Doesn't quite match up to the default multitouch... I get far more typos with the landscape swype than multitouch. Also, swype is faster and more accurate in portrait, but different occasions call for different methods.

You might wanna look at Tasker. I've never used it, but it seems like it would be able to do such a thing.
I have your solution!
Go to the app store and get SlideIT keyboard. It is swype capable, and has a decent lanscape keyboard AND you can turn swipe on or of on the fly. I will admit that the landscape keyboard is not as smooth as the multitouch but it is way better than swipe. This is what I use daily.
The Tasker devs were emailed and said they currently cannot do this.
I would love this feature also.. combining Swype with Swiftkey

Blur keyboard

Hate to say it but I love the blur keyboard. I tried gingerbread keyboard for a while and at first hated it but after a few days got used to it. As soon as I went back to blur I fell in love within an hour.
My question is, how do I permanently make the smiley button next to the space bar, into the enter key. Sometimes it is enter and sometimes it is a smiley.
Does anyone else like the blur keyboard as much as I do? I also like the toned down intensity of the haptic feedback on the blur board as well.
My true favorite is the swype keyboard but it doesn't auto correct

I don't know the answer to your question, but I love that keyboard too. it's the best I have ever typed on. I can type very fast with minimal mistake.
I love the keyboard.
Swype > *
The Motorola Multitouch Keyboard isn't bad, better than Sense. Don't have experience with Gingerbread Keyboard on Atrix, though it was nice on my brothers Nexus One.

Really? I like the overall presentation (big keys, etc.) but I find that the blur multitouch keyboard doesn't really feel like multitouch to me. If I type really fast where sometimes my presses overlap, it often misses some of the letters I typed, even though they flashed above the keys onscreen. They just didn't actually appear in the textbox I'm typing in.
For example, type the word "what" as fast as you absolutely can, with very light taps (in portrait mode). I find that more often than not, I get the word "hat" or other misspellings. I didn't miss the key; the popup shows that it was typed, but it just didn't appear.
I hate to say it, but I learned my virtual keyboard typing on the iPhone and iPod Touch and those devices never lost some of my presses, despite fast, overlapping presses.
I tested many, many keyboards from the market, and you know what? The Gingerbread keyboard and Better Keyboard 8 are really the only ones that could handle really fast light typing. I also like Swype though, and use the beta version. It's quite good when you just want to do some one hand typing.

You're right about the blur keyboard missing inputs I never typed fast enough to notice it. I'm trying better keyboard 8 right now and like it but its glitched and keeps asking me to activate it, so I can't enter the options menu for the board.
Where can I get the swype beta? I have swype now, how do I know that I don't already have the swype beta? Also does the swype beta have auto correct? Not suggest but correct.

So I got beta swype and while it functions better I don't nearly like the skin as much. Also it doesn't auto correct only auto suggests properly spelled words.
Also I do like better keyboard 8 but am unable to fully test it as I can not properly "enable" it to enter the settings menu.

Try smart keyboard plus. Hands down the most customizabld keybaord ever and by far the most responsive. I love the fact that I am able to resize the keyboard all I want and I'm also able to disable full screen landscape mode which is the biggest failure of all keyboards on android

Wow. This thing is great! True multi touch; it never misses a single word no matter how fast I type. Also I am able to even customize the length of the vibration for haptic which I love because the blur board had a very short, very light feedback and I am able to recreate that with this new board. And the skinning is just icing on the cake. Thank you!!!

Nice! Don't know how I missed this one. Better Keyboard has pretty much all the features mentioned EXCEPT it doesn't auto correct anywhere near as well as this one does. I guess I'll have to add this to my collection...
By the way, what skin are you guys using? I just found "Rapid" for Better Keyboard which looks really nice. Similar to the stock Blur keyboard, but better! It works just as well with Smart Keyboard too.

Landscape or Portrait?

How do you prefer to hold it?
Landscape.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
for some reason it just feels right holding it in landscape..
Landscape here as well.
I will say that, in Portrait view, I've noticed a tendency for the home screens to stutter just ever-so-slightly when sliding from one to another. Almost imperceptible, but definitely not as smooth as in landscape. Anyone else notice this?
landscape + tablet keyboard = win

Portrait would be ok if they moved the keyboard about an inch up. Trying to hold it at the bottom and type is way too top heavy.
Browsing or reading books I prefer portrait; most other uses I tend to go landscape -
I usually go portrait mode for general web browsing and landscape for typing and certain apps.

Keyboard resizing when moving from upper to lower

When I am typing in portrait mode, I hate that the lowercase keyboard is smaller than the upper case keyboard.. so I type the first letter and have my thumbs in motion to type the rest of the word, but then the letters all jump downwards.
Am I making any sense? Anyone got a solution for me? Thanks.
I use swift key keyboard not noticing the issue you are describing

With swiftkey you can adjust height in portrait and landscape mode

I'm using stock default keyboard.. guess I should try swift key.
I do not have that behaviour with stock keyboard. The keys have the same size in upper and lower case. I'm using it with 3 languages (English, French and Spanish) and two layouts (qwerty and azerty).
Maybe it is an error in your installation of the keyboard app?
