Where is everyone?? - Droid Pro General

I have my Droid Pro and I have to say it is BY FAR the best android device I have used (and I have used most of them).
We need to get the Dev community over to this forum and working to make this device even better.
If any senior members see this, let everyone know that Droid Pro needs some TLC.

AGREED! I came from the Incredible, which is really an amazing device. The Pro, however, suits all my needs professionally. And the keyboard is really kick-ass. Have you tried Swiftkey with this keyboard? it works better on the Pro than it ever did on the DInc.

I agree with both of you.
I came from the Eris>Incredible>X I love my PRO.
DEVS please show us some love !
I'm willing to test BTW

Port this phone to sprint and I'd leave my Evo in a heart beat. Love the qwerty and android mix. I don't think it can get much sweeter.

Maybe if we all ask http://twitter.com/#!/koush politely he will begin working on a recovery for us ?

As soon as some kernels start coming out I'm going to be so happy. I have no problems with blur since I removed a bunch of apps.

Hey guys, I accidentally deleted my droid pro email.apk file. Can someone please give me a copy of the file or if there is any link from where I can get it?

I know its not what your asking, but you could just install K-9 Mail, it's better then the default client as it supports push mail. email.apk only supports push on gmail. Personally i deleted my email.apk and don't want it back.

I just ordered mine today. I can't wait to get it!

Popularity = Development, and I hate to say it, but this phone simply doesn't have the popularity factor. I am also one that believes this is the beast Android I've owned (out of 4 models) however a lot of the Hardcore Devs look at it as a BB wannabe. The Qwerty is awesome, and coming from a 3 year stint with Touchscreen only keyboards (minus the Droid 1, but I NEVER used its physical keyboard) I didn't realize how much I missed a good physical keyboard. Case in point, you would have never seen me ramble on this much in a reply sent from any other phone simply because I was tired of typing, however with this phone I could just go on and on, but I won't.
I really hope this phone has a huge holiday push so we can see some more Dev love, but I'm really not holding my breathe. I'm happy with the way it is and can live without all the custom Roms if I have to.

I hear you and I agree 100%. The keyboard is amazing. Have you tried Swiftkey with this keyboard? It makes me fly even faster. The only downside is that the microphone button won't bring up the speech-to-text feature as it does on the stock keyboard. But it's simple to switch between keyboards if you need that feature.
At least we've got root, thanks for Z4Root. Now if we could just get a custom recovery, then it would hopefully be fairly easy for a dev to port a custom ROM from the Droid X to the Pro. Hopefully...

[Q] just ordered my first android phone

switched from my bb8900 that finally crapped out on me today. so being as this is my first android phone...what do you guys suggest i do first with it?
best apps to download?
probably not going to root. guess i can be considered a n00b. im good with computers but not programming good. ive read a lot but i dont want to brick my first android. maybe if i get a new one later on down the road i can practice on an old one.
best suggestions for increasing battery life?
games? etc etc.
also i have a question about gps. i downgraded to the 200mb plan through tmobile. i wasnt using nearly enough to keep unlimited. the majority of my use i can use wifi or randomly i'll use the gps when im driving. i know you use data when using gps but how much is it? i have a friend with a droid thru verizon and he looked up directions with google gps. and while we were driving he completely lost service for probably 30+ minutes going through some moutain heavily forested area. but it kept navigating. is this because google had already mapped out the directions? is it possible to just lookup where you are going and then turn off your service to avoid using lost of data?
sorry for being a noob.
thanks in advance.

Please post questions in Q&A section.
sorry about that
Hi Big Fancy,
I got on Android back in November of 2008 just after the G1 was released. Even though I'm a geek by profession, I wasn't planning on rooting my phone. That changed pretty quickly thereafter.
I was given a free CliqXT at the beginning of 2010 and I didn't root that (I haven't looked, but I'm not even sure if anyone even tried to gain root access on that device). I was hanging on and drooling over the Desire HD and then the HTC Glacier (myTouch 4G) hit the market - it was a no brainer.
I didn't plan on rooting this device either, as I didn't want to "break" my new, pristine baby. Philosophically speaking, one should have root access, but I'm also conservative enough to know when I don't need to play with fire.
What I'm getting at is, once I saw how easy it was to do...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
...it just became another no brainer.
Ok, so most of the apps I would recommend, are going to require root access.
Titanium Backup for Root Users - This is a must have. Whether it's for restoring data or reverting back to a previous version of an app, this is one of those apps I think is a must-have. It's also the first app I purchased and I've been on Android since 2008. I've been quite happy with the free apps on the market, but I loved this app and had to support the dev.
ClockworkMod Recovery - This is also a must have. Essentially, this is like imaging a hard drive or cloning your system. In a way, this trumps Titanium, since you can backup your entire "image." If something breaks though or if there's an issue with the ROM itself, then Titanium is your lifesaver.
AdFree - This just updates your hosts file and nullifies, if you will, any known 'ad' IPs/host names. Basically, you don't see ads in ad-driven apps like Angry Birds or Watchdog Lite.
Watchdog Lite - You really want to avoid task killer apps, to a degree. The developer of Watchdog has a succinct explanation of it on his site - http://www.zomut.com/watchdog/froyo.
SetCPU - Sure, you can overclock your CPU with this, but you can also create nice profiles which will pull the CPU back a bit and help conserve battery life.
LogMeIn Ignition - Those who know a little more might just use RDP or VNC. I've been using RDP to remote-in to my home PCs and any Windows Servers I managed since I got on Android. LogMeIn is great though and for those that aren't familiar with port forwarding, et al, LogMeIn is a dead-simple way to access your computer from the road. It's also a secure connection, so that makes it a winner in my book. I use TeamViewer to support my clients and we're upgrading our license at the beginning of 2011, now that TeamViewer for Android is in beta.
Speed Test - It's nice to be able to show off your speeds, but it's also nice to check your speeds wherever you're at. A log is kept, so you can spot trends if you're experiencing speed/bandwidth issues.
Here's a handful more apps/games I find to be useful...
- Adobe Reader
- Adobe Flash
- Amazon Kindle
- Angry Birds + Angry Birds Seasons
- Barcode Scanner
- Bonsai Blast
- Chrome to Phone
- ES File Explorer
- Gmote
- gStrings (chromatic guitar tuner)
- HootSuite
- IMDb
- Movies (by Flixster)
- My Piano
- OI Notepad, OI Shopping List, OI Safe and OI File Manager (particularly Notepad and Shopping List - I use those daily)
- Paper Toss
- Photoshop Express
- Quadrant
- Reversi Free
- Shazam
- Skype
- Torrent-fu
- Uninstaller Pro
- UPS Mobile
- WordPress
- XDA
- Yelp

I loved swype but now I've got the gingerbread keyboard app from the market, (by Steven Lin) and it's AMAZING. The auto complete feature is SO MUCH MORE convenient than swyping, especially while driving.
It is a must have for one handed operation and it works fine on the MT4G.
Give it a try, it's on the market.
Just search Gingerbread Keyboard and look for the one by Steven Lin.
You'll love it!

Well I wasn't promoting driving and texting either..but if you had too. lol.
shlongwoodian, that was a great write up. I've been on and off with Android ever I got my G1 back in Oct in 08 when my contract was up, and ever since then it was either iOS or Android, and now I'm back with Android after using it for a year in 09 and then this whole year with an iPhone. Missed it, got the G2 first with the contract and then this MT4G, and I'm loving it. Rooted this (I won't use a phone if it's not jailbroken or rooted, just a personal thing, I want to be able to control my phone), and it's been great. I don't think I can go back to a BB or iPhone. Even though I really want to give Windows Phone 7 a shot.

Thanks for the info. I tried to install the Fabulous Gingerbread. zip posted on Android Spin and it put my phone into a boot loop. Downloaded this and it is just fine. I do like it a lot. I had been a Swype lover but now I am really torn between the two and am leaning toward the GB keyboard.

Awesome. Glad you like it. I'm a big fan now too.
Still nice that the option to swype is there, if you switch back. But yeah. =P
So I did it. Finally got tired of the lag with my stock mt4g. Fully rooted with s off and loaded iced glacier. This runs so much better now. No lag. Totally smooth. Faster quadrant benchmarks. Hopefully the battery lasts longer like I've heard from some here on the board.

Hey Verizon/Sprint Tab users

Since we are kinda the minority here we really need to stick together. We should start putting a thread together of our wish lists for developers. I feel like we are kinda behind the curve compared to the GSM folks and hope we can get more people involved in CDMa stuff.
Your thoughts.......
Good idea. . . . Just not enough dev in the sgt anyways. I bought my verizon sgt 2 weeks ago in hopes of something fun to flash like a hc port or CM7. I am dissapoint.

I am new to this and willing to learn, and will support with beer funds. I am assuming that the vzw efforts will carry over to Sprint since both are cdma devices. I have my galaxy tablet rooted but have not gone any further as I have not fully understood so many of the posts in regards to which are the better rom to use, the best method of flashing based on the rom, so to avoid any of the big issues..aka not booting etc. I am looking for a really good guide to get started. One that says first and foremost fo this before you start so you can recover you device if you really bugger it up.
I was in the same situation as you up until last weekend, notice I avoided using the "same Boat"
for now the first thing you need to get is Heidmall, dl the stock image and warez for your specific unit. If you need help I have aol and Gmail chat, Pm me for that info.

HID or SPP Verizon Galaxy
I may have found a solution for the bluetooth keyboard issue. "keypro" on the market will drive certain SPP keyboards (not HID) it is a little more to work with than the single verizon samsung option for keyboard use. I am waiting for my freedom universal standard keyboard and keypro is supposed to support it. You can download the program free and see what keyboards it supports. I will let you know when my keyboard comes in. Sorry if I am in the wrong posting area I just signed up so I could share this.

I dont profess to be any coding expert, and All I really know anything about is the VZW tab at this point. Sprint files are totally different but loading is the same.
VZW people should be on the look out for a new Kernel from Boushh, Im running it now for 24 hours and its a screamer and totally stable. Latest benchmark was 2221.
It should be out tonight or soon after.
Trying to learn basics of coding and all in the upcoming weeks. Hopefully ill be able to contribute down the road. I bought min early January and am very happy so far.. even with a gingerbread/wp7 hd2 on hand..my tablet is used much more. I have heavily layer into the honeycomblayout/theme and just the changeover to khasmeks work and honeycomb density and layout...I've started using much more. Like I said,I'm really pumped to start deving as I know alot of cdma users will benefit from more work coming to the table..when I start getting confident and have things down pat..even then I can't promise it will be as good as what Boushh has done, but at least it will be an attempt at getting more dev for cdma

Super Content With the (m)Atrix ; )

Hey guys, just wanted to express my love for the phone and let you know some things I did, that you could do too in order to love your beast a little more.
First off, I rooted at 1.26 and then updated and rooted again at 1.57 (used the root that says you need to root before going to 1.57)
Second, I got several mischievous mods and fun stuff that rooters can only have. (This alone made my phone twice as good...cough...tethering apk..cough...can't say what else)
Third, after figuring out how to make the battery run good, I downloaded a bunch of music and just enjoyed the sweet super loud speaker (covered) while I took a nice hot shower.
Lastly, and this took a while to figure out due to the fact that im no dev. I located on the android dev page the webtop via hdmi and made it so I could do just that. I tried doing the whole adb thing, I tried my own way with root explorer and the installer for 1.26. But nothing worked except for the 4.1.57 (w/chinese font fix) one. I highly recommend it! Go check it out!
Overall, I have a super fast (faster than the iphone 4
Good to see positive things about the atrix!
I love this phone as well its greatly sized and the screen is really nice and the haptic feedback is phenominal. The speed goes without saying and the battery life is good too.

I was like you when i first got my HTC Inc, i was able to root it and all and then do other kewl stuff with it. But when i attempted to install a rom on it, with no research done before hand as to how to properly do so, it really threw me for a loop for a good month before i actually started "asking" people for help on the forums. Overall, everyone was pretty responsive and quite helpful, so i encourage you to try out some of the psuedo-roms available. There are three thus far and they're called psuedo roms because our Atrix bootloaders are still locked, so until it's unlocked we can only make minor changes to the framework of the phone.
If you need any help as to how you can install any of the three available roms, here are some links that will prove quite valuable in your quest to further enhancing the aesthetics and functionalities your phone.
1. This link will help you get your phone rooted and retained after the update . But since you already have it rooted and updated, then you can immediately proceed to Part 3!
2. This link is for the GingerBlur v1.3 psuedo-rom.
3. This link is for the GreyBlur v2.1 psuedo-rom.
4. This link is for the GladiAtrix2 v4.2.3 psuedo-rom and it also has instructions on it =P
Of the three, i've only tried GingerBlur and GreyBlur and haven't had time to get around to GladiAtrix2 yet, but the ones i did try are both great. If i had to recommend one for you, i'd say go with GreyBlur just because of my personal preference, i like the theme and icon set better than the stock and GingerBlur ones.
Another great reason to try the Blur Rom series is that both roms have a "Blocked Advertising" feature! In short, if you have apps that give you pop-up ads, they'll be gone! And probably the one app you'll appreciate this the most for is YouTube, because you won't have those 15 second ads anymore =]
If you need any other help, don't be afraid to ask, the XDA community is very open and responsive =] Btw, glad to see you're enjoying your Atrix, it is truly a great device!

[SWYPE][INFO]Swype v3 beta

FYI for all you Xoom owners. You MUST be completely stock to get this update. Apparently running the ☢ BigDX Xoom|Zoom Theme ☢ 3G & Wifi Only ☢ will send data that the Swype servers don't understand.
"There was a data error, likely due to a bad network connection. Please try again."
So you just need to revert completely to stock then run the installer and it will go by without a hitch!
Your Welcome.
Hi, thanks for your post but i dont have installed this app what you said.
Go back to stock isn't it worth for swype...!
Finally swype on xoom! Bout time!
Ummmm your a little late. I already posted this and the link about it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122823
Second you do NOT have to be stock to install Swype 3.0 on your Xoom. I know cuz I did it.
Please search before you make a post. Also make sure you know what your talking about before you give people the wrong information.
I use Swype as my main keyboard for my Xoom, I don't think it is worth going back to stock if you really like the theme or rom. It's great but it has a ton of glitches. I am mainly using it as my main keyboard to help beta test. I think it will be worth it when they update it at least once.

I had been using Swype since last fall on a Nexus 1 and loved it... thought it would be a great improvement for the Xoom, but I really dont find it helpful... doesnt seem as slick as the smartphone version. If trying to type like a real keyboard it tries to connect the dots, and does so unsuccessfully. Even when its shrunken down to the smaller GUI its still not great as a 'swype' keyboard. The auto suggest is consistently wrong and the keyboard seems to struggle with using the .com button.
I went back to stock keyboard...which works well as a qwerty keyboard.
On the Swype forums, they've stated if you're running the Tiamat Rom it can cause issues with the communication between the device and the servers.
They were trying to reach out to BRD last I read.

I've made my return to XDA after about a year of using an old blackberry when my last HTCrap broke.. I was so sad without my android I spent time fussing with my iPad Mini and it wasn't the same!
So over the weekend I finally switched from T-Mobile to AT&T and I couldn't be happier with my service (the LTE is FAST!!) nor the phone cause this S4 is such a treat as I'm sure you all know.
So as I try to get settled back into what was the daily XDA grind of helping fellow users and always trying to gain knowledge of our device and anything Android I felt it would benefit me if I could get a jump start in my new community!
I have a few questions that I know I can/will answer myself but I would value all and any input from you guys
So first off... What's gone wrong with the ROOT???? I was so excited when the S3 came out boot loader unlocked already and all... I had even pre ordered that one at one point.. But here it seems there is only a select percent of users who have attained root on their phone? Seems as if we as a community haven't quite unlocked our phones full potential yet!!
My next question stems from that last question. How is the development scene looking for our device?
I know the Samsung legacy has been a very attractive platform for some wonderful developers in the past, and that was something I was looking forward to with the S3 and is still true for my S4! My question is how good is our outlook?
Anyways other than that just little questions I have that I am sure i'll figure out as I get back into it all
Any good apps you guys could recommend that have maybe gained a footing in the past few months?
That's guys and I can't wait to get to start poking around and helping out as our device gets rolling!!!
Cheers!
Matt

Oh and also guys!!!
This is my first Samsung phone I have had all HTCraps ever since my G1 it was all those htcs!!!! So even though I've read lots about the odin and that USB Jig thing and all that from the S2 days and such I don't quite understand what that is and why it is that we have to pay attention to such on our Sammie's... So if anyone could point me in the direction of a good guide to learning that maybe I would be much appreciative!!!
Thanks!!

A lot will depend on which firmware you have. If you have mdl or mdb your pretty much good to go. BUT, take your SIM out now and do some research. If you have mf3 you only can root, no custom recovery or flashing roms.
Edit, and no odin back to stock. Very important to consider.

I would enable the Google keyboard instead of using the Samsung one. It has swipe built in and works better and also recommend setting chrome as the default browser because the stock one is nice but acts funny with the yahoo news widget when reading articles.

I'm enjoying the samsung keyboard quite a lot actually it has swipe.... and the only Google keyboard I see is the typical google voice input.
I enjoy the keyboard so much i switched from Swiftkey!
And of course Chrome or nothing!!

Wait until it constantly puts the wrong word in. I liked it too but got tired of the inaccuracy of it.
