VooDoo bricked me, can't fix with Odin? - Vibrant General

ok guys, i have unbricked my vibrant before after the OTA update about 5 weeks ago. i am pretty new at this smart phone stuff, but was pleasantly surprised i was able to get odin to fix the brick. about an hour ago i launched the stupid VooDoo in the OCLF app and the phone now will go as far as the animated galaxy "S", then go blank. i attempted the Odin flash about 5 times now with the same result each time, just boots up past the vibrant screen to galaxy S then goes blank. when the phone restarts or reboots after the odin flash a message in red reads DATA WIPE FAILED between a few yellow text lines. when i try to reinstall packages through boot screen i get the same message i got after the OTA brick, E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip now the phone was rooted with the OCLF before i launched VooDoo. can somebody help me out?!?

Odin back to stock. That should fix it.

Anybody else have an suggestions?? like i said in OP i have tried to flash back to stock, about 5-6 times now, all with the same result. phone goes blank after galaxy S screen and music. thanks

As mentioned in a million threads, you need to flash Eugene's "froyo that doesn't brick." Then flash whatever firmware you want.

flashed the froyo successfully from eugene. cool set up, major issue though, i have no application storage now. there are a ton of apps in manage apps and i cannot uninstall any of them. can i fix this somehow??

i'm going to try flashing froyo back in it so it works, not select repartition. then restart odin, select repartition and flash the old vj12 rar and see if that works

Never seemed to get the answer to this. What is the purpose of "Eugene's froyo that doesn't brick?"
Why do some people suggest flashing that, before they odin?
Did eugene take everything down from xda, I can't even find that anymore.

i actually found what i though was the froyo that doesn't brick but it was actually his jk2 version. i clicked Eugene's link on one of his posts and it took me to his site and thats were i got it. i did some searching and actually found the "froyo that doesn't brick", it fixed my baby! i couldn't do anything once flashed but i was then able to flash back to jdf then j16 and all is well. i have flashed like 10 roms into her since this weekend with success, i am back to running j16 with some extras as the games i play don't support 2.2

When i'm in download mode, it doesn't recognize it. When i'm in recovery mode, Odin recognizes it. If i turn my phone on and plug it in, my pc recognizes it, drivers are ok.

Any answers, i could really use the help

what version of Odin are you running? not that it should matter. try pulling the batt, hold volume up and down, insert batt while volume buttons are pressed then plug in USB and wait for it to go into download mode then release buttons. see if Odin recognizes it then.

try a different cable too if above doesn't work

Turn your phone off open odin hold down volume up and down, now plug in the usb this will get you into dl mode now you need to flash Froyo ~~~That does not Brick! rom with odin. Right after you flash that get back into download mode open odin first then with the phone ( power the phone off give it a min, hold down the volume up and down keys, now insert the usb cord BAM download mode) flash back to whatever rom you want.

Voodoo install from OCLF Ryan bricked the Vibrant

I had the update with OCLF installed and it worked fine until I decided "accidentally" (very very regretful now) to install Voodoo from the OCLF app. Then the phone went into a soft reset and got stuck at the Vibrant screen.
Since then I've tried to select "install packages" or "reboot system" options in the recovery mode, but it showed only a partial progress bar at the bottom, then it got stuck at the Vibrant screen.
I gave Odin a try but the app does not see any com port after use ADB reboot or recovery commands.
Btw I did NOT select USB debugging mode before installing voodoo. I did install the USB driver for the Vibrant but am not sure it even works because the Odin app did not see any com port.
Any help is appreciated! I don't want to loose data and files in the internal storage. This is kinda urgent because I need to use phone.

The same thing happened to me. I even posted it yesterday to warn people to be careful with RYANZA Voodoo and I got flamed and insulted. Basically you fried your kernel. I tried different things and what worked for me was ODIN the JI6 back. Go to Vibrant Directory Bible under Samsung Vibrant--Android Development and find that thread. Go to the ODIN section and download the JI6 package. You will need to get into 'Download" mode on your Vibrant for ODIN to work. You need to have the phone plugged into computer via USB, hold down both volume buttons and the power button at the same time. When the screen becomes black, release only the power button and download mode will pop up. Then bring up ODIN and make sure the yellow com message pops up. With ODIN it will work right away (like 2 minutes). If you see it hanging then you need to try it again. When you get your phone back up you need to disable voodoo. Good luck. Know that the Vibrant is almost impossible to kill, you will be able to bring the phone back to life.

I'll give it a try later. Is there a good link to download the USB driver? I did but am not sure it will work with Odin. I also forgot to release the pwr button only when the Vibrant screen came on. You said release it at the black screen.
Theres voodoo on the oclf app? Where do you download it? When I downloaded it from the market it wasn't there. Do I need to install a supported kernel before it shows up?
Another thing is the phone is not in USB debugging mode before. Is this needed for Odin to work?
It is in OCLF app

I don't remember exactly how it looks but the app has like 3 tabs: 2nd is available, 3rd unavailable or vice versa, 1st is probably the voodoo one. BE CAREFUL, read the kernel instruction first! I am sure they are not compatible. It should be disabled one or the other so users wouldn't get hacked.
ok the 3 button procedure got the phone into Recovery mode like this screen with yellow text:
--------------------------------------
Android system recovery <2e>
reboot system now
reinstall packages
--Appling Multi-CSC
Installing Multi-CSC
------------------------------------
Selecting either "reboot system now" or "reinstall packages" gives this screen:
----------------------------------------
Installing from sd card completed
rebooting..
Phone reset done
-----------------------------------------
The phone now got stuck at the Vibrant screen!
How to get into the download mode?
Holding vols up down with battery in and then plug in the USB cable, the Downloading screen came up with the digging icon and a message "do not turn off target" but it just got stuck there. I typed in the adb reboot download under the folder containing the adb files but it said "error no device found". I installed both drivers, one from Samsung site and one x86 from Softpedia site. Is it time to get a new one?

Somewhere in the forum said that selecting the pit file will wipe all data. Is that true because I so want to keep EVERYTHING intact! Just got back from a short vacation in Waikiki
I got the PC to see the Vibrant now with Odin but I downloaded the newer tar file T959UVJI6 (2.1 updated ver) but can not see it from selecting PDA button, it can only see the old T959UVD (stock 2.1). I am at the no point of return now so within 15mins if there is no answer then I must get going.
Thanks again!
Never mind guys! my bad did not unrar the tar file..going to download it now..wish me best of luck!
ok downloading now... it is a nerve wrecking experience comparing to WM6.1 custom rom flash which was very smooth going. I still miss the original i900 Omnia. I am going to be late for the church but God please forgive me! Oh it passed the downloading and got the S logo..
it booted up but stuck at black screen with all soft keys lighted up, tried the install packages in recovery mode again..
I guess I need to download the pit file? Will this wipe out all data?
I don't have voodoo... where did you get your oclf app from? Is it not showing because I have stock JI6 kernel?

Did you follow my to-do list to the T?
this might help
you need to flash this PDA file with odin EUGENE373_SamsungS_Froyo_PDA along with the PIT 512 you should still have from the unbrick instruction odin forum then after you flash those files you need to let it do its thing it will prob take you to recovery just long press the power button and when it turns off put the usb back in the phone to get it into Download mode(just get back into download mode any way you know how) and then follow those instructions you did earlier with the unbrick instructions forum just flash the Eugene373 SamsungS Froyo PDA file first then after you flash it get right back into download mode and flash stock vibrant rom through odin.
Odin in eugenes froyo that doesnt brick.Make sure you use the 513 pit file that comes with it. When its done, pull the battery and odin the jfd. Use the 512 pit file with jfd. Check the repartition box for this one. You will be back to stock and all the lag fixes will be gone. This process works to save your vibrant from ALMOST everything

Again guys thanks for your time and help but just one more time, I am still a bit confused, can you list exactly what files to download in order to get the phone back alive without loosing any data and files?
Download 512 or 513 pit first? Do it together with the tar file (check both boxes in Odin)? I understand 512 pit go with JFD (stock 2.1 rom before the update). How about the latter one? It goes with JI6? Now I got only the JI6 in the phone without the pit file. Should I download 512 with JFD first then do the latter one with JI6, and all data still remain intact?

Phone will not go into DL mode

I don't get it. When i try and get my vibrant into dl mode using this method -
Step 1.) Open Odin.exe and plug a usb cable to your computer that will connect to your phone (do not plug it in to the phone yet, just the computer)
Step 2.) *Added this: Power off your phone before trying to get into download mode, and then....*
Hold down both volume buttons at the same time and while holding them down plug the usb into your phone.
- all that happes is a green battery bar comes up. Tried it on my roommates vibrant and it went straight into dl mode. WTF?
*EDIT - Phone is rooted and running the factory rom. I'm trying to install the JI6 update found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803492
I really don't understand why its so hard for people to get into DL mode.
Unless your soft bricked you don't need to go through all these steps.
'adb reboot download ' in adb is all you need to do.

Not so sure from your posts above what method you have tried. When are you trying to connect Odin? You need to be in Download Mode first, fire up Odin, then connect your phone...
Is this what you are doing?
Also, which version of Odin you using? In Win7 you may need to right click and run as administrator?
The best way is to look on the odin how to here in forum

Problems with ODIN and GB tech demo!

ight so i was trying sombionix's GB demo and i decided to go back because obviously i wanted a more stable rom. so i turned off the phone, pressed vol up & down and plugged in usb. i got in download mode, but no COM # is coming up and i tryed installing vibrant drivers but those dont work, any ideas? i feel like im missing something....
Try plugging into a different USB port, see if that makes it re-detect the phone and install the drivers.
should vibrant drivers work?
im using drivers from samsung website and i tried every usb port on my computer. starting to freak out a little now :\
Open Odin. ALWAYS OPEN ODIN FIRST. Then take out your battery, plug in your phone, and hold down power and the volume rockers. While still holding those 3 buttons down, put battery back in and it should show up immediately

nope it didnt work, plus you didnt specify when or if i should let go of the button combo or not. Im in the process of downloading nexus s drivers to see if that will help. IDK what is going on. maybe i should try a diff version of odin? im on v1.7 :/
i remember reading something in that thread about needing the nexus s drivers to revert back.
Use Odin 1.3 and let go of the buttons after you get into download mode. Sorry I forgot to add that lol
Sorry I meant put the battery back in not plug your phone back in.. god wth is wrong with me lol (edit from first post)

okay guys this is turning into a real problem now, i installed the nexus s drivers from an android sdk. the phone was accepted and all is well. but when i open odin, i get into download mode and the computer still asks for drivers! i go and choose the ones i prevoiously installed and it is rejected....wtf do i do now. i also tried the drivers that were linked in the tech demo thread but they didnt work either. (
please i need HELP i really have tried everything i can think of. I installed the drivers and they work. Except if i go into odin, then get into download mode, the computer asks for drivers AGAIN and if i choose the same ones i previously installed, they dont work.....WTF is going on???

So I just tried to download 2.2 via kies and ended up bricking my phone. I followed it step by step so I don't know where I went wrong.
So in the process of me trying to unbrick my phone I tried to get into recovery mode with no success.
I got fed up trying to access download mode by vol. up/down and plugging in usb and decided to just go ahead and open Odin with the usb plugged into my phone and laptop still not in download mode.
On Odin it was on ID: COM 10 so i said screw it, I put in the pit and pda and hit start.
What do you know. it worked !
My phone is up and running now and I'm now trying to find an alternative way to get 2.2 on my vibrant.
Just wanted to share.
If you weren't in DL mode then what screen were you on?
The com number is unimportant. There is a deodexed stock version of 2.2 in the dev forum posted you could use that instead of Kies...... I would
I have only been able to access the phone via odin in download mode and the computer-phone mode, whatever its called.
These are the techniques I use to access d/l mode consistently. It depends on which software was installed prior to crash however, as they seem to alter the method somehow.
phone off then vol + and vol -, and plug in usb, the most common one. If that doesn't work, its usually phone off then vol - and power. This seems to be for the older versions of android. Also, keep the back cover off, because if it doesn't work, just pop the battery out and in.

The ID: COM 10 means that Odin is communicating with your phone in download mode. lol
I thought I noticed this too a while back (when odin 1.8 leaked), but I figured my memory from the previous night's flashing was inaccurate. I'll remember to try if I've tried everything else to no avail.

The screen on my phone: picture of a phone and a computer next to it.
So I guess this mean that I don't need to be on download mode on my phone in order to unbrick it. Sweet!
Now only if I could find an easy way to update to 2.2

There is a very easy way to get to 2.2.
Root you phone, install CWM and flash a 2.2 rom. There is a Stock 2.2 ROM that will bring you back to un-rooted status if you are worried about warranty.
