System Update Message? - Epic 4G General

Not sure what it was, but I got a system update message on my phone. It wasn't like the voicemail one it didn't say what it was for.
So I clicked install or whatever, it rebooted and went to like the rom installer screen (black white letters, installing system packages)
I get back into android and it doesn't look like anything is different, however I went into settings and a message popped up saying I needed to charge the battery before the phone could finish upgrading.
Anyways I am new around here, first android phone. I was rooted installed 2.2 froyo, had a few bugs and went back to stock and thats when the system update prompted me.
Anyone else get it?

Did you check and see if anything is different now under "About phone"?

No everything looks the same, and if I go to try to update the firmware or anything it stays I am up to date.
Really strange, it definitely seemed like it installed some system files. It looked like when you flash a custom rom through clockwork and see like unpacking /system etc etc.
Charged my battery up more and rebooted a couple times and doesn't say anything about an update anymore. *Shrug*

Whoever sees it next should open up a terminal or adb in and go into /cache and pull out a copy of the zipfile that's there to see what it is.

The market doesn't typically update like this. I think the market has its own method of updating...can't remember what the process is to force one.

I was still rooted... Maybe the server's being swamped...

anyone extracting update.zip?
same here. i tried to install the update file but i reboot into clockworkmod recovery and it tells me i failed to update
Working good, now we'll need to divide the forum questions Before Froyo BF and After Froyo AF. No bugs yet, though flash doesn't quite match lip sync, not too sure if it's the site or not.
Worked great, tried flash and that works beautifully. Phone sure seems to be a bit smoother. I had rooted the phone and I unrooted it before performing the OTA update.

Ok, my way worked. All you need to do, is to hard reset, reactivate your phone, and download ota update. It totally worked!
Noobie here..when you say hard set, what exactly do you mean. Do I need to unroot the phone first and then hardset, then go to (with verizon) *228 and ativate?

Well... I tried factory reset and reactivated.. still gets hung up and resets after its reboot to the recovery screen. Comes back with "update failed"
The only thing I had done at one time or another was Koush's Clockwork boot and root.
I had unrooted and uninstalled Kouch's stuff.. then factory reset and reinstalled, same thing. The update will download.. boots to recovery screen, get 1/4 way, error triangle, reboot, "update failed"..
Any ideas? Is there something from Koush's stuff that is hanging around, evern after an uninstall?
I'd really like to get the OTA update!!
Thanks!

Fascinate OTA update underway

I just did a check for updates on my Fascinate, and it pulled down a 697KB update, SCH-I500_DH12_to_DI01. Not sure what it changes, etc.
I was able to download it, but I can't get it to install. It keeps failing. Do I have to unroot to install?

Not sure. Some guys in #samsung-fascinate on irc.freenode.net are going to mess around with it.

Same issue here
Mine failed as well with the following error code: "UPDATE FAILED or INCOMPLETE. reason: IP_PREVIOUS_UPDATE_FAILED."
I wasn't rooted, but I do have third party software installed. Any ideas why I can't get the update to stick?
I tried the update on my non rooted phone. I mean i've never even done anything extra to it, and i still got the update failed reason: IP_PREVIOUS_UPDATE_FAILED
I'm thinking there must be something wrong with the update.
I'm having the same issue with "IP_PREVIOUS_UPDATE_FAILED".
I was rooted+lagfixed but went back to stock using the ODin restores, still getting the above. I've tried it with and w/o CWM enabled as well.
*EDIT*: I just want to note that the phone attempts to reboot and install the update, and I can see (VERY briefly) the recovery manager attempting to apply the update. In this, I was able to see 'signature verification failed' amongst the normal messages.
Hmm, if you're running the stock recovery, and stock everything else, and you see a "signature verification failed" error, then the downloaded patch must be corrupt. I'm guessing you might need to delete the downloaded files and force it to redownload the patch, but I have no idea how to do that.
On a side note, I just applied the official patch to my rooted and lag-fixed Fascinate yesterday, by temporarily reverting to stock, and re-rooting afterward. I posted the steps I took to do this over in the development forum, for those that are interested: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=792652
I called verizon and talked to tech support about the IP_PREVIOUS_UPDATE_FAILED problem, he didn't have a fix. So he said i can take my phone back to the store and have it replaced with a new one.
Anyone know where I can find the bloatware apk files? I got a little trigger happy and deleted them instead of renaming. I can't install the update until I replace them.
Any help with this...
I was rooted with lag fix and OTA installed unannounced. So I lost root as expected. Meanwhile, seems I have the update but each reboot brings the update screen back, over and over again. Baseband and build number are updated. I have rerooted, un-lag fixed. Trying to get this update to stop showing up because its KILLING my battery. Thanks for any help.

If your Fascinate (unrooted, cannot speak to rooted phones) will not take the update, AFAIK your only option seems to be the 30 day return policy at Verizon. Last week after over two hours in the store they finally swapped, but even that phone would not take the update. I went in today, got a new phone, and it took the DI01 update. Third times the charm.
Its updated for sure and currently rooted. When the phone reboots it says installation starts in "x" and counts down. I have to defer for 24 hrs to keep from irritating me. I may try the store for an exchange.

EA28 OTA

I just activated my girlfriend's phone and immediately it prompted for update, so I did. To my surprise it was not DL09, but instead EA28. So after some google searches I found this:
http://phandroid.com/2011/02/03/samsung-fascinates-ea28-update-coming-to-fix-emergency-calling-bug/
The site is basically right, they repackaged dl09 with the emergency calling bugfix and pushed it out with a new build number.

I believe I was able to root successfully but when I try to flash ClockwordMod, it doesn't seem to be working. ROM manager says its flashed and has the latest version, but when I boot into recovery it is definitely not ClockwordMod. I cannot do backups or choose a file from SD to install.

When you flash a new ROM it overwrites CWM, so you'll have to re-install it with Odin.

Update broke my phone!
I just saw a screen forcing the update upon my phone. I clicked "OK" but when the EA28 update installed itself on my phone, it locked my phone into a cycle of trying to install it again and again. The baseband version shows S:i500.04 V.EA28, the Build number shows SCH-I500.EA28, but the update keeps trying to install the update. It gives a Prompt to Install-Reboots Phone-Prompt to Install-Reboot Phone... I managed to get it to stop for a little while by scheduling a deferral of the update until tomorrow. Does anyone know how I can keep the update from trying to install?

I managed to get my phone to stop rebooting every 3 minutes by ending the InnoPath Active Care process and clearing the cache. But when I woke up this morning, the phone was at the emergency recovery screen. It went into a cycle of rebooting that made it as far as media scanner. I got it to stop rebooting by turning ON wifi (I suppose that's because Active Care needs WiFi off to do an OTA). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop this "Feature" that is rebooting my phone?

i just connected to a wifi... went to settings, system update, and the msg DOWNLOAD came up....its doing it as i type!

root with super one click
reboot phone
enable sideloading...click allow on your phone ( su menu)
reboot
run aROOT
reboot
then go here

after its done... run the update, install it, reboot it
when its rebooted, wait about 3 minutes + and make sure debugging is still on
then run afterupdate
and run the command via ADB
reboot... and BAM... 4.1.57 sideloaded and ROOTED
I would install it, but i don't feel it's worth losing root/mods over.

You have to go to settings >about phone>System Updates to force the message ... I know you said you dont want it anyways but just in case someone else was wandering...
Also, I was really getting annoyed with the fingerprint scanner but I have to say the update did it wonders so far.
It's easy to block the update if you don't want to lose root and also want to get rid of the annoying messages.
Just rename the otacerts.zip and cacerts.bks certs in system/etc/security.
The update will download (you must let it download), but fail the auth check and not install.
This also turns off the reminder notifications.
Easily reversible if you want to get updates later.
my phone keeps telling me I am up to date. I haven't gotten the message yet.
How long is the update supposed to take? I've been staring at the triangle "!" sign next to little green Android dude for a while now.
Edit: Disregard.. Pressing a key took me to the recovery menu, where it said signature verification failed. Hmm.
I have a feeling the patch doesn't like what I've done with TiBu.. Defrosting all frozen bloat then trying again.

[Q] We see lots of OTA related problems, how do you disable OTA?

Today I had to restart my phone because it dropped data connection, the moment I restarted it said my phone was being updated and I should wait, it wasted my time and it shoved 10o update down my throat.
If I had recovery installed, this could have been disastrous, no?
Not only for recovery related problems, but this may also prevent people from being able to install certain things, or even one day in the future with a different update just block root?
How do we uninstall then disable OTA updates on an unrooted phone? When I disabled and cancelled notifications for Software Update app, I thought it was fixed, but it probably made it worse, it just installed without any notification or prompt.
I was planning to root and install twrp this weekend, now with all the horror stories I've been reading, I don't want to do it. :crying:
How is AT&T even allowed to push it without explicit permit to install on device.

For me it actually updated in my sleep, I woke up and it said my phone was updated. OP and I are on AT&T's D800 variant.

Well, it would still help to avoid further OTA's from being applied if we are rooted and do not use custom rom, there is always a risk of getting OTA and messing everything up, therefore if freezing above app worked for you, it should be all we need. Is Software Update the actual app which checks for version and receives pushes from AT&T when a new OTA is available, or if there are other apps/modules that does this. The problem is, if it is incorporated into android system like some of the other stuff AT&T incorporated, it would be impossible to completely eliminate it without running a custom rom.

you have to flash the old version by using LG Flash Tool, like I did.
So, I have a question for you guys. I got my phone yesterday and I'm on 10o. I installed the CWM recovery for 10o via Flashify, and now I'm concerned about OTAs - I disabled it via the Hidden Menu, but if there's an OTA to update the phone to 4.3 or 4.4, I'd like to receive it and not worry about bricking my phone.
I don't plan on doing a lot of custom ROM flashing, I really just wanted to root and install Xposed. Do I need to flash a stock ROM and go back to stock recovery, so I don't have to worry about OTAs? Or should I be good with CWM and the stock ROM that I rooted?
