My sisters hero is on three, it hasn't displayed anything about OTA updates, even the part 1 update, i have advanced the date yet it still isn't doing anything.
Anyone know why this is?
Cheers
Im on three to with a hero, Im just on the phone to three tech support who claim that there is no plans atm for the update on three as they dont even know of its existence. Im hoping this is just lack of communication within three as I only had the hero because of the promise of the new android as the desire only come out around 3 months after i upgraded!
i'd be extremely surprised if the three hero was left out. I read somewhere that orange and three updates are delayed, still not sure why I havent had the part 1 update though.
I've emailed HTC so i'll see what they say and update on here.
I mailed them a couple of days ago about rumours networks were blocking the update and got this response.
Dear Jason Woods,
Hi Jason, thanks for your email. HTC will be providing a free update to Éclair for European HTC Hero variants. Starting in June, anyone owning an HTC Hero will receive an initial preparatory update, shortly followed by the full Éclair update. For the full update, we would recommend using a free Wi Fi hotspot or an unlimited data plan, otherwise standard data charges may apply. We apologise for any disappointment this may cause, but we are working to get this update to you as quickly as we can. In regards to networks blocking updates, you will need to get in contact with your network provider directly for more information Thank you for contacting HTC. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact us again. Best regards, Simon A HTC

I'm a "new user". Apologies for the spaces!
Damn it.
Use the goldcard method, downgrade, flash a new ROM. Works just fine. The walkthroughs are very good on this site and provided you follow them it should work just fine. The changes 3 will make to the rom are so minor it really isn't worth waiting for.

I would but it's my sisters phone, should have heard the grief i got just for installing the custom htc keyboard on it lol. She will just have to wait.
As an update for anyone waiting, 3 have been posting updates on their blog here: blog.three.co.uk/2009/12/07/the-htc-hero-with-spotify
They posted today that the update "is being tested and is due for approval imminently".
I've posted a question asking if only part 1 will be available by the end of Friday or if both parts will be.
They replied and apparently the update will come all at once instead of two parts.
Cool - I have a Desire and my Mrs has a Hero... she is complaining her phones not as slick looking as mine so I thought I would flash it... but if 3 are doing an official update I'll wait for that.
Looks like they missed their deadline, but they did release a new statement on their blog.
Thanks for all your patience regarding the 2.1 update for HTC Hero. We have now tested and approved the software and this has been submitted to Google to get the final go-ahead. We’re hoping that they can push this through as quickly as possible, but we’re not clear on the timescales for this yet.
As soon as we know more from Google on their timescales we’ll let you know

Three is delaying yet again. Now they are saying it could be another two weeks.

We're hoping that they can approve it within the next 2 weeks and then we can start updating Three customers with HTC Heros.

Why would Google have to approve the update?
the wife has a Hero on 3uk, support told here the update would be by the end of august, hopefully, well at least she thinks that what he said.
anyway she gave up waiting and let me flash the 2.1 stock rom to her phone.

this seems a joke, but ok, we have patience and hope to receive a good firmware.

I did think the last post from T-mobile seemed strange. The new info seems to tie in with what the user "Beards" has been telling us on here. He stated there was a last minute problem found with the official samsung release

Sorry to sound harsh but deal with it.
Samsung are not the only company who have delayed releasing 2.2, speak to HTC owners.
Surely it's better that Samsung delay it rather than give us a crap release?
The leaked Beta builds have been great for us to test and the feedback Samsung get helps them to improve the OS.
How many other companies producing Android phones have allowed customer to try out Beta build of Android?
I am glad there is a delay as it will give me time to get Kies working so I can even get the update.
Samsung support are useless on this so far!
And how do mac users get the update?

Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.2 FroYo upgrade launched
Posted by Luke Johnson on Fri 5 Nov 2010
Android 2.2 update to finally hit the Samsung Galaxy S
After months of waiting owners of the formidable Samsung Galaxy S Android handset will today be able to update their devices to run the latest incarnation of the Google mobile OS, Android 2.2, FroYo.
The flagship Samsung handset became a major player in the smartphone market following its launch back in July but has remained devoid of the OS upgrade despite FroYo landing on a number of its closest competitors.

“Froyo starts rolling out today; everyone will have it by the end of Nov. To prepare, get the latest version of Kies.” announced Samsung UK via its official Twitter feed earlier today. Kies is Samsung’s proprietary upgrading solution needed to update the handset’s software.
The 4-inch mobile powerhouse will add a host of new features to its already hefty arsenal with the upgrade to Android version 2.2 including the coveted full Flash support and device tethering. Google Maps GPS navigation and voice guidance will also land on the 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera touting iPhone challenger.
Elsewhere in the land of Google mobile operating system, the imminent arrival of version 2.3 of the hugely popular software, dubbed Gingerbread, appears closer than ever as latest reports and rumours peg the Android update to make its way to developers in SDK form as early as next week, November 11th.
Have you got a Samsung Galaxy S that is in need of a FroYo boost? Share your thoughts on the Galaxy bound Android update with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the Gingerbread arrival.
Let me spare you the torrent of flaming you will get.
That does NOT apply to the US Vibrant, it is for the UK market. Yes, it means that we will eventually get it, probably by the end of the year.
There's already like 3 threads about it, plus this is not for US.

All you want to be mods please go hide in whatever corner you came from. Let real mods do the work. Posting "Please lock his thread" doesn't actually lock the thread.
Also the OP NEVER said we are now getting it on our vibrants. He just posted a story...
Back to topic. Was it EVER said anywhere that the US Galaxy S series would get froyo? I know this was assumed because Samsung said the Galaxy S would get it, but I wouldn't doubt them changing their tune now.

Well that's just practical, it gets really cold outside sometimes.
Isn't it a news of some interest for us Vibrant owners that UK is getting Froyo for Galaxy S? Sure it is....that is because Vibrant is a Samsung Galaxy S series phone and an official roll out in UK means Samsung has Froyo working well for Galaxy S phones at this time and it means US is going to get Froyo soon.
OP didnt say Vibrant is getting Froyo on so and so date, like a bunch of BS threads in the past.
We were promised by Optus that mid November we would get Froyo. Hit them up on @Optus on twitter or their support email. If more people start asking then we will actually get an answer.
At the rate it's going, we might well be the very last people in the world to get Froyo for our devices, even though we were some of the earliest adopters for the handset.
Keep us updated on your progress mate. I don;t have a twitter account but am in the same books as you.
I have rung them a few times but they are less then knowledgeable with a response.
Most of them you talk to don't have a clue what your talking about. ie. Firmware what?
Then try and direct you to call Samsung.
The last time I spoke to Samsung in Australia they couldn't provide any details at all.
A sad sad state of affairs to be sure.

News: Android 2.2 for Samsung Galaxy S is now available
16/11/2010
Owners of Samsung's Galaxy S line of phones have been patiently waiting for the Android 2.2 update that many other Android owners have had for months, and now it looks like the wait may finally be over.
Samsung has announced that later tonight, at 8:00 PM, a download will become available to SamsungMobile.com that will be compatible with all Galaxy S devices, upgrading them to Android 2.2.
The news comes after Google and Samsung have continuously been dodgy about details regarding the update for Samsung's Android-powered smartphones. To date, the only handsets to receive the upgrade have been phones manufactured by other companies. Only about a quarter of all Android users have upgraded their device to the latest OS.
Many of those who haven't upgraded simply have a phone that is too outdated to receive it. But the Galaxy S platform is one of the most technically adept on the market right now and is more than capable of running Froyo.
Exactly what has been causing the hold-up is anyone's guess, but it's been a real problem for Samsung as it tries to market the devices.
Android 2.2 brings with it features like full browser support for the latest Flash video standard, the ability to use your phone as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, and enhanced voice controls for all aspects of the device. It should be a welcome addition to the Galaxy S family.

This is from a US news website called TGDaily which was talking about the update but he missed the mark for sure.
It's not specifically related to OPTUS at all but a general comment stating Froyo was now available.
When you go to the Samsungmobile.com website you have to pick a region.
Australia takes you to that regions site and the Kies version here is way way old 1.5.1.10083
When you install this Kies, it will prompt you to update to the newer version.
BUT.......no Froyo.
Sad sad sad.

All of this was proven to be wrong, and was copied from a blog entry from the day before from TG Daily.
It was promptly removed from the Optus blog.
Optus made an announcement on Twitter that Samsung delivered to them around 01/11/2010 the new firmware. They had to create their optus customisation for it and intended to release it mid november. Now its the 19th and it still isn't out. I figure anyone who cares should go put a question to them @Optus or their support email until we get an answer.
I don't mind the wait as such, it's just that I want to know what they are doing. I hate "two more weeks". IF they could say we are having trouble getting the widget to work and we want that working before we release, then OK, but silence is just downright frustrating!
Why the heck do you need the Optus customisations for? It's not like you get extra wallpapers or optimisations just a bunch of useless widgets and shortcuts but whatever.
I hope official firmware from Optus is better than Nordic JPA version.
I have JPA Froyo on my optus GS via Reg hack. Wifi is ify and phone lags...
Put same app side by side on GS and iPhone, GS one is slow.
EG. Kids only want to use iPhone for Talking Tomcat because it does not miss every second word.
Sad!
I was in the same boat as you guys not long ago. Waiting for Optus to release their modified firmware, checking kies day to day. I got kinda fed up waiting, figured that the firmware is of course just going to include all the optus and samsung bloatware to slow down the phone. Not to mention relying on kies to work properly.
So in the end I just put Dark's Rom on. works fantastically really. learnt how to do it (easy guide in his thread) and actually did it in under half an hour. the actual doing it only takes like 10 minutes. I know it's not for everyone, but i'm so glad I decided to go down that route rather than rely on optus.
I don't understand why you guys have to know what's going on all the time.. Optus have stated that their release intention is "By the end of November", for quite some time now.
Knowing exactly what's going on won't get you the release any faster, it serves no purpose but to waste their time by answering the children in the back seat "Are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet".
We'll get there, when we get there.
Perhaps if December comes along, and it's still not release, THEN start nagging.
Or just abandon all hope and flash a rom! I mean you are on xda after all.
I was waiting with my old eclair rom but went and flashed docs rom. I only regret not doing it sooner.

Agreed, Custom firmware is guaranteed better than Optus bloatware.
Insanity, Spike Speedy v3 and Darky's v4.1 are all perfect for quick, fully optimised and bloat-free roms.

Alot of custom firmware comes with the Optus APN, the one I'm using at the moment came with it.
Which is Insanity.. Very barebones but you can easily install whatever stock apk's you want via the included link he gave to them on his thread.
If you want the Optus apk's (Why on earth you would is beyond me..) I'm almost sure you could get them off optus zoo, just give Optus a call and find out if you have any troubles I guess.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9264973&postcount=1
Edit: Also the Optus APN info can easily be added to the phone manually by going to Wireless and network > mobile networks > Access Point Names > press menu button, new APN
and the information for the APN (and all other Aussy ones) is here: http://ausdroid.net/apns/
I'm not neccessarily after a date, I want a reason. If they would just let us know that they really are still working on it, they aren't stuck with a resource problem or something like that then OK. I just hate it when they leave you with no news.
And my original statement still stands that we may well be the last carrier to actually get Froyo. I want the official one because I'm going into Optus if it doesn't fix the GPS for a warranty claim.
I want to know the date so I know when I can use the phone to it's full ability as advertised!

Catherine: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Visitor: I have a question regarding the press release saying that Android 2.3 Gingerbread will be coming oout for the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy S line of phones.
Catherine: I understand that you are looking for Android 2.3 update for your SCH-I400 Phone now.
Visitor: I was just wondering if that update talked about in the press release will cover the Samsung Continuum
Catherine: I understand your requirement,Would you mind holding for 3 minutes so that I can check that for you?
Visitor: No I would not mind
Catherine: Thank you.
Catherine: Thank you for holding.
Catherine: I see that Samsung Continuum phone have Android 2.1 OS on it as of now and Android 2.2 up has to be released for this device at this time before we can proceed with Android 2.3 update.
Catherine: As per the information available at this time, I see that your phone can be upgraded Android 2.2 update is not available for download for your Phone as of now.
Visitor: Are you ever going to release that?
Visitor: I realize it isn't available NOW... we Continuum users have been waiting for it forever...
Catherine: Yes, I see that we can upgrade your phone to Android 2.2 but the updaet is not released for your phone as of now, I'll forward a copy of this chat transcript to our product development team to proceed further from my end in this regard.
Catherine: I apologize for the inconvenience this might be causing.
Visitor: Wait, you CAN upgrade it to 2.2 but it's not released? Can I ask why not?

Catherine: However, I am positive we will be able to upgrade this model to Android 2.2 version when an update is released.
Catherine: Should this update become available, it shall be available on Samsung website under Samsung Download center.
Catherine: I understand your concern and requirement but we at Live chat do not have an estimated date of availability of this update for your Phone at this moment.
Visitor: I was just wondering on a possible release time for it. Like I said we've been waiting for it forever and when I bought the phone I was told it would be coming out in a matter of weeks
Catherine: I can understand how annoying that can be, I am sorry, we at Live chat didn't have any hint about the updates that are not released. We are provided only with information about the updates already released.

There are 3 big things to this.
1) We won't get 2.3 until we get at least 2.2, so the press release does not cover the continuum.
2) They've MADE THE UPDATE TO 2.2 FOR THE CONTINUUM BUT HAVE NOT RELEASED IT. I don't know about you guys, but that is absolutely INFURIATING to me.
3) There is a way to let our voices be heard. It worked for the Fascinate users. Call them at that number in the last bold part.
Samsung Customer Care at 1-888-987-4357, Mon-Fri: 7 AM - 9 PM (CST), Sat: 9 AM - 6 PM (CST) to check if any help in this regard and to file a request for update
We ALL need to do this. All of us need to chip in and call them and file to get this update released. It's ridiculous that the update is there, they just aren't releasing it. DO NOT LET THEM FORGET THAT WE SPENT OUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT AND THEY NEED TO SUPPORT IT. Call the line, ask about the update, tell them you're dissatisfied, angry whatever but get that report filed and let's get that update OUT!!!
Yes, the update is made but not released. That's been established before now. That means rubert the current roadblock is Verizon's testing and scheduling the OTA. At this point, there isn't much that Samsung can do. The pressure needs to be applied to Verizon.

Nowhere in that conversation did the Samsung rep say the 2.2 update was already made. If you read the words carefully all she's saying is that our phone is capable of receiving an update.
As far as us having to wait for Verizon, I think we might be able to use Kies once Samsung posts the updates.
I realize that, the representative I talked to on the phone today confirmed that it is, in fact, made "but it has not been approved by management." Those are his exact words. It's been made they just aren't pushing it out for some reason. ("The android 2.2 update has been made, but it has not been approved by management...")
I personally think that if they have time to make a Gingerbread update for ALL the other Galaxy S phones they can at LEAST make a 2.2 one for us.
Well that's good news about 2.2. I read Samsung's official announcement for Gingerbread. If we're being hyper-technical (just playing devil's advocate), the announcement did not state all Galaxy S phones would receive the update. It just said Galaxy S which could mean only the i9000.
But it said the update would be pushed out to Galaxy S phones in North America, which would not be the i9000.
a$$ pain
been pestering someone for almost an hour now. on hold for his boss
This is what's up
It is very likely that Samsung has "completed" several Froyo builds for the Continuum, and like the Fascinate, Verizon is holding everything up again. If enough people can bother Samsung, they may just post the source early like did for the Fascinate, showing that they aren't the hold up. Granted, this would only get us the kernel, but we have to start somewhere.
I will try and call tomorrow.

They don't have to release proprietary code that is in the ROM as the Android system code is released under a different license, so the platform code is worthless for making a ROM.
