Hi, I been having the HTC Surround for a little over a week now. I love the look and feel to it (I know OS wise it has a lot of improvements to do but I'm willing to put up with it for a bit, considering its a new OS). However one thing I notice is that it has horrible battery life! The phone last about 10/12 Hrs on a full charge. During this time period, there is no heavy use; tops 50 txt messages send and received, about an hour of music, screen lock (brightness set to low, when on), perhaps 15 minutes of talk time, data connection turn off, about 20 minutes of WiFi (I turn off WiFi when not in use), rest of the time on stand by as mention before (with the screen locked). Another thing i noticed yesterday night was that my phone was charge completely, i left it on stand by and within 5 hrs that i slept the phone had gone a little lower than 3/4ths (data connection was off).
I read a post here that said battery may drain quicker when phone is left in cold weather and i thought maybe this could be the case. However I'm really skeptical because i live in Los Angeles. Cold weather, which is this time of the year, is mid 40 degrees at its lowest! That's not cold! But anyways i guess I'll try putting that theory on a test (imma try keeping it warm, see if it makes a difference)
so is anyone else experiencing horrible battery life? Or am I just an unlucky person who got a defective battery?

What "theme" are you using?
If I don't use my phone, it will last for days. Even when I use it through out the day, it lasts well into the next morning/afternoon.
The battery life does get better the more you drain/charge it.

well, I been having it for a week now. I seen no difference in battery life. But imma give it another week or so. See if this works. Then I'm gonna try buying different battery. If that doesn't help, I think I'm going to have to switch back to my Samsung Captivate. I would hate doing this, but this type of battery life is a deal breaker. Today, it was even worse! It lasted me only 9hrs while I was at work, which at least 8 of those hrs it was on stand by!
Sounds like you have a bad battery, bro. I'd get it replaced at the store you bought it from.

yeah, I'm going to try this on my day off which is on Monday. Also gives me time to test out the other persons suggestion

My surround - now two weeks old is showing much improved battery life. It didn't make it through a day when I first got it. Part of that was due to my fiddling with it and part due - I think - to the battery conditioning.
Now, it is going a full day on a charge. I am also switching off 3G and on WiFi when I am in my office or home. It is a bit of a pain in the butt and I hope that M$ gives up some APIs soon so that someone - cough Bruce Jackson cough - will write an app. We'll see.
I have noticed that the Bluetooth drains the battery considerably faster. Try turning Bluetooth off when you don't need it.

I don't use the Bluetooth at all. So this can't be the problem. but thanks anyways. (I might need this information since I was planing on using one in the near future).
So I notice that now, my Surround does get better battery life. (which is absolutely crazy! since now I have the screen brightness on medium and data turn on lol). I guess the battery just needed to be use and charge a bit more. However, I still think battery life could be improved. (hopefully, future updates will teak some system settings that will do this)
I have also decided that I will keep my Surround instead of going back to my Captivate I wish battery life would be better and the OS to be more "open" but truth be told, I fell in love with my phone haha Then when i went back to my Samsung Captivate, it felt weird. Android felt much slower.
So i gave it a little test; I launched messaging, email, music, browser, etc on both phones at the same time. Turns out both of them launch these native applications in the same amount of time.
I guess what makes WP7 fell smother and faster is the (eyecandy) transitions.

ya i have had mine for 2 weeks now and i think the problem is the fact that the battery is a 1230mAh, and we also have a samsung focus with a 1450mAh battery that will last an exra 2-3 hours longer which makes a huge difference! im hoping htc will make a larger mAh battery avaliable, mine will only last anywhere from 5-7 hours from normal use
I just ordered a Mugen 1300mah battery..not *much* more capacity, but hopefully it helps a bit!
if i dont use my surround (like not using too much 3g, wifi, music, gaming, and just normal phone calls and texts) it can last a whole day and probably a lil more, but when i do too much 3g/wifi/gaming/music it drains quickkkkkk.
and i do hope htc will have a larger capacity battery for the surround soon... 1230 is kinda small compare to other phones nowadays..
but still this has much better battery life than my previous phones (diamond2 and touchpro)
i just find myself carrying the usb cable and wall charger alot in my bag :]
and having a car charger is a plus also.
My girlfreind has had the phone since xmas. Initially the battery would lose its charge very quickly. I had her do a bump charge and just let the battery settle in. She can now go up a third day wothout the need for a charge with moderate txt.

Agree - Bad Battery Life - But not as bad as some....
Smart phones, in general, aren't what I would call great at conserving battery life under any condition. Pick any model of high-end smart phone and tell me who can get more than 2 days (using every trick in the book to eliminate unnecessary drain). Yes, this phone is under-powered in terms of only having a 1300 mAh battery when it should have a 1400 or 1500.
Cut the unnecessary stuff when you are not using it - Bluetooth, WiFi, etc.
You can easily get a day + out of this phone with moderate/mixed use (some talking, some browsing, some multi-media viewing). That's pretty good, I'd say (from my relative experience across many different types of smart phones). I just plug it in every night.....pick it up in the morning and go. Haven't had any issues with it running out during the day.
Now, if you are starting first thing in the morning and running movies, have the bluetooth going, the WiFi on........well, heck yes, you are going to have a battery drain problem. If you want to run it that way.....just leave it plugged in.
Has anyone used a Seidio Innocell 1300mAh Replacement battery? Was wondering if it was worth the investment to improve the Surround's poor battery performance.

So...when is someone gonna step up to the plate and improve battery technology? It really sucks that these phone manufacturers are giving us ALL these fancy features that drain the battery and when we complain about having poor battery life they are telling us to not use all those fancy features...kinda defeats the purpose of buying a smartphone, am I right?

I noticed this as well. As time went by the battery actually started to last longer. When i first got it i used it less than i do now and the battery would die before i even got home for work. Now it lasts till about an hour or so after i finish and get home.
does the surround use the same battery as the HTC desire HD?
Theres an ebay seller that is selling a surround battery and wall charger but the wall charger has a sticker that says: For HTC Desire HD

Ok so I read a post that said drain your battery completely for better performance so i did.Got low bat warning and played Avatar to kill it quick.Only it didnt die fast,seemed like forever for this damn thing to really die!!!Maybe I just imagined it so I tried it again.Got low bat warning and watched a 25 min youtube vid followed by a 16 min youtube vid and several rap videos before it cut off.Try it and see how long it takes to really run out of juice and I think youll be surprised
I remembered with my G1, that once i got the low battery warning, I was always able to milk every ounce of power from that battery.
after picking up my vibrant yesterday, i charged to a full 100% with the phone turned off
i've been on it all day long, installing apps and restarting quite frequently, and i just got my first battery warning (21%)
will probably run it into the ground after work for another full cycle charge then just charge whenever it needs it. seems to have more than enough to make through a full day, and i'm only saying this because i haven't been able to put it down since this morning and it's still ticking
edit: and this is all done indoors with fluctuating 3g/2g coverage (home and work)
I have twice run my battery into the ground and charged to 100% with the phone off. Now I am getting a little over 25 hours on a single charge. this battery is indeed better than they said it was.

Better than what?
If coming from an old WM, sure, it's better.
But coming from an iPhone, which lasted for 2 days with real use, the battery of the Vibrant sucks.
With moderate use, I can's get through a full day (14-16 hours). It's the one real problem I have with this otherwise great phone.

I had two 3Gs (now have a Galaxy S and a Vibrant). It lasted almost double what the Vibrant does, with similar use.
Love the screen of the Samsung, but the battery is making me a little depressed. I am hoping that Froyo will improve it a bit.

yeah, hopefully drops sometime soon.
it seems battery life is either really good or really poor, not a lot of middle ground. of course, this could mostly be because of different peoples' opinions. but i'm coming from a dumbphone i only had to charge once a week, and so far i'm pretty impressed. like i mentioned earlier, i've been on this thing non-stop since this morning, and it's just now flashing the battery symbol at me. i imagine once i go through a couple of full cycles, and the new toy factor wears off, it will be a non-issue (for me)

Why not just buy some extra batteries? I picked up 3 extra batteries for when I fly so I can watch movies with no worries...
I get great battery life on my Vibrant. Make sure you turn off everything that you don't need....wifi, gps, keep screen brightness low and not on 100% at all times etc...obvious stuff....

Man, I have turned the brightness down to below stock, and I do have two extra batteries. But that's kind of like going back to my WM days.
After the getting spoiled on the iPhone, which would last for almost two full days with everything running, and with similar use, I really hate having to constantly think about the battery, and worry that it's going to die on me.

Someone hit my car a few days ago and I tried to take a pic with my Vibrant. It was in late afternoon, so the battery was at 15% I guess -- so the phone effectively told me to "F*** Off." Or at least that's how I took it No pic, of course.

I hear where you're coming from...have you tried switching out the battery to a different one? I know that some of the batteries were faulty and gave people horrible battery life.
The iPhone also ran at a much slower clock speed and it was equipped with a pretty good battery. There's no denying the awesomeness of the iPhone battery...I'm just thinking that you may have a bad battery. Try changing it out.
There's also a 2800mAh battery pack coming out very soon....it may suit your wants and needs...
The iPhone also lacks widgets and multitasking - and the screen is not as bright so those all help in maintaining battery life.
If you crippled your android in the same way - you could get 2 days pretty easily as well.

I have both, and they both have their good points and bad points.
The battery is a bad point for the Vibrant.
The screen is the best point (it's actually not "brighter", but has much better contrast than a backlit LCD). I keep the Vibrant's screen at it's lowest brightness, anyway.
But in terms of speed, there is really not much difference in daily use - if anything, the iPhone 3Gs feels a little smoother much of the time. Again something Froyo might improve.
My well conditioned battery is at 5%, after 16hrs 54 min., with very light non-call use today (calls are at 49 min. 26 sec.).
My point is, that I have to expect more after using the iPhone, while some here are obviously happy with it. But it ain't great.

We get five to six hours of display on with this phone. That number is perfect if the phone was on 35% precent or more of those 16 hours.

It's ALL about the apps you use.
My battery life is pretty good, I can go two days with moderate phone use and my normal heavy-e-mail and occasional messaging usage. I don't do much web browsing with it, but I fiddle with it constantly throughout the day.
My friend couldn't get through one day on his, so I encouraged him to play around with some of the apps he had that I didn't, and now he can get well into day two before it gets low enough he wants to recharge.
My wife complained about her battery life, and I realized she was pinging four e-mail accounts once per minute. Just cutting that back to a five minute interval made a huge difference.
Even so, I've ordered spare batteries and a charger since I travel often and a missed call could cost me a lot of money, and they're too cheap to not keep a few around. (In one of those other threads somebody linked to an ebay deal with two batteries and a charger for 8 bucks.)

That's almost universally a theme when people complain about Android battery usage.
Got my replacement Vibrant yesterday afternoon, charged it full while turned off and took it out at around 9pm. Worked on it a little last night and today installing apps browsing and about 60 min talk time so far.... 3PM and still got 30% left.
Definitely much better battery life than the one I had on first phone. I did get a replacement battery as well, but haven't tested that one yet. This one so far is working as expected.
I haven't rooted yet so I am not sure if that and lag fix has any affect on the battery.
Also ATK is not installed yet, and i hear it has adverse affect on battery. Is that true?

I haven't really done anything different, but my battery life in the past few weeks has just gotten better and better.
Right now it's 3pm. I put in a fresh battery at 9pm last night. Batt level: 55%. I was asleep for 7 out of those 18 hours, but I've had wifi and BT on the whole time. I've read and replied to 15 emails, maybe 10 texts, 15 min of calls, surfed the web for 2 hours, played about 30min of games, and had music streaming for 1.5 hrs. I've easily been making it through long work days (8am-8pm) of moderate/heavy use, whereas before I would need to recharge after 6-8 hours.
Anyone else noticing better battery life after the first few weeks? (of course, it might have to do with the fact that I'm playing with it less, but there are days when I play with it constantly and it's still doing better than 12+ hours)
I'm still on the first week with my current vibrant and I have noticed a slight improvement in battery life since I first got it--the fact that my life is pretty consistent day to day (phone-wise) helps me track it. Maybe the hardware and software need to be 'broken in' per-se?

This is my biggest gripe about the Galaxy S -- compared to my old iPhone 3Gs the battery life just sucks.
I am hoping that the efficiencies that come with Froyo will squeeze a few more hours and make it usable for a full day.
If Samsung gets off its lazy (or incompetent) butt and upgrades us to Froyo soon, of course.

The question is, what are you not doing? We can all get it to last the long, but this is a smart phone. I cannot afford to treat it like if I was stranded on an island.
Before I get into my post I just wanted to say I'm running stock out of the box with no root/ROM/etc. Just plain ol vanilla Eclair...with the JI5 via Kies.
I'm getting about 32 hours myself. I do use tasker to set up profiles only to turn things on when I want them. Such as sync will only be enabled for specific apps when I run them then off when I close them. GPS is only on when I run Maps/Yelp/any geo-aware app then it turns itself off. Turn on silent mode/vibrate when I'm at the office by recognizing specific cell towers...stuff like that.
I also disabled "Use Wireless Networks" under Location & Security since Google says it will use it even when the phone is off. I don't know why but it's been saving on battery too. I also don't use any task killing app such as ATK since I think the phone should be smart enough to manage the memory by itself.
edit: Oh, I use automatic brightness settings too with manual brightness control on the browser (usually on low-med setting)

Everything enabled except brightness. i turn off wifi and bluetooth when sleeping, and have sync set to once an hour for social contacts and such. For facebook etc i manually update my feed when i want to check on it, or it auto updates every hour.

I'm at a point of consistent battery life of about 13 hours of moderate to heavy use. Been this way since about the middle of August. The longest I've pushed it was close to 21 hours but i'm normally in the 11-12 range.

Nah it's not any different from when you first bought it, you're just using it less, even though you think you are using it the same.
Trust me, when people buy a new phone, the first few days or couple weeks they can't take their fingers off the phone, and it appears battery sucks. As you get over your new toy phase, you don't play with it as much, and magically you think the battery has grown new cells.

There are easy ways to take care of this if you really need better battery life. First, call T-Mobile and complain that battery life is shorter than advertised. They'll walk you through a script and send you a free spare battery. Second, get an external battery charger. They're all over ebay for about ten dollars, and most come with generic spare batteries.
I've now got a charger and three batteries, so I can pretty much make it through an entire work week without worrying. (You couldn't do that with a 3GS!)

Are you serious?!
You really like carrying a pocketful of spare batteries?
I have 2 spare batteries, but I pack them only when I travel.
The damned phone should be able to last throughout a full day (meaning 16 or so hours) without having to worry about turning features off or limiting your calls and mail checking).
I never had to even think about the battery with my iPhone 3Gs.
you must really be glued to your phone if you can't make it a full day

Uhm, I am actually using it exactly the way I used my iPhone, and the way I need to use to do my work.
It just has crappy battery life
What are you comparing it to? A WM6 phone or something?

I get nice battery life but I use it too much, then "a day" is from 5am to 10pm, it's just too useful, and when you check usage, it's 75% display.
36 hours would be easy if I limited my screen on-time....while I would like a UV kernel it's likely not helping enough. My display is on lowest, yet I'd love a lower setting.
Aside, the more background services check stuff while screen is off, battery life hours down.
Overall, I am VERY happy with the battery life.

Um, the batteries are pretty small and skinny. Are you wearing pants with no pockets or something? Seriously, the thing can almost fit in the coin pocket of some jeans.
The damned phone should be able to last throughout a full day (meaning 16 or so hours) without having to worry about turning features off or limiting your calls and mail checking).

You must be one of the few 3G/3GS users to never worry about battery life. Most of the users I know have (or had) to recharge mid-day, a pain in the butt since the battery is not removable. Your 3GS has a much slower processor/GPU, and a smaller screen with a quarter of the pixels; but even then, google "iphone 3gs battery life" and you'll get page after page of reviewers and users complaining about the abysmal battery life.
(of course, someone here claims that his Vibrant can go 40+ hours, so maybe your iPhone is a similar outlier.)

Its exactly what the problem is. When I flash a new rom I spend 30minutes getting back to the way I like it and my battery suffers from it. When I actually use my phone like its intended to be used I get great battery life.
Are you using any kind of ROMs? I think some ROMs greatly improves battery life.

Dude, I've had one iPhone 2G and two iPhone 3Gs. I also have two Galaxy S variants (international and a Vibrant).
There is no comparison between the iPhone 3Gs and the Galaxy S in terms of battery life. With the same kind of usage, the iPhone 3 Gs would last about 32-37 hours, while the Galaxy S would last about 12-13.
Even the iPhone 2G lasted about 18-20 hours. Now, compared to my previous HTC WM6 and WM6.5 phone, the Galaxy S does have longer battery life, but that's nothing to be so proud of.
The Galaxy's screen is certainly better than the 3Gs's, but the Super AMOLED is supposed to be more efficient than the LCD on the iPhone. Plus, in real world use, the iPhone 3Gs certainly feels smoother than the Galaxy S, even with the lag fix, and scrolling on the iPhone is smooth as butter, while the Galaxy S is choppy.
And it's not just the OS, because the EVO scrolls noticeably smoother than the Galaxy S.
I consistently get 20+ hours out of one charge. I can't really use my phone at work, but during breaks and lunch I'm always getting on it and checking mail/feeds/youtube or whatever and still have about 70% by the time I go home. I usually have more than half by the time I go to bed unless I've been doing some tethering or heavy audio/video streaming.

I have been letting a couple of days go by to see how the battery is and I have got to say that I am highly not impressed. I love the phone and even like Blur but the battery is really a let down. I know that the first day or so that I use the phone heavily because of course.. ITS NEW. But today I have been real busy at work and have maybe text a few people, made 2 calls, and looked up a number using google maps and my battery is now down to 60%. In battery manager, it says 5h 2m 25s since unplugged which would be me taking the phone off the charger this morning and heading to work. Other stats are:
Display 35% 29m 52s
Phone Idle 26% 4h 32m 47s
Voice Calls 24% 6m 45s
Cell Standby 11% 5h 4m 5s
Wi-Fi 6% 1h 51m 56s
From looking at these battery stats and usage, does it even seem correct to be at 60% battery? This is at the least very minimal usage for a phone.
Yet another battery thread... One thing before people start complaining: don't estimate battery life based on battery gauge! Complain once the battery is dead and you HAVE to charge. That's the real mileage you'll get from your battery (and give it a few days to calibrate). The gauge is not a good indicator.
I am a new Atrix user too and so far the battery life is 12hrs or less. Maybe that is not impressive. Coming from the N1, its alright in my book.
I do want to say to everyone complaining about the battery life:
It can take a week or more for the battery to settle into the routine and perform to its maximum ability. Lets start the conversation again later next week on where our battery is at.
Yesterday I got 13 hrs between unplugging the phone, and getting the 15% warning. Not all that bad. Not great, but definitely could be worse.
mine has yet to drop below 30% and im pretty much browsing the web and texting all day. I dont care what kind of phone you have but making voice calls and playing games/watching videos kills battery with a quickness no matter how big a battery you have. . The atrix in my personal usage is just as good as my ip4 was.

Have the Atrix and Epic 4G and the Atrix lasts easily twice as long as the Epic.
I have to keep he Epic pluged in for my hour comute with pandora, just to make sure I have enough battery to make it for the trip home. Normal usage during the day with brightness all the way down, wifi off, BT off, sync On.
Had the Atrix today (day one after full night charge, unpluged at 6:30a), kept BT On, WiFi On, Brightness 100%, Sync On, Exchange Sync On, Auto off/standby set to 15 minutes, Pandora on via BT for my hour trip (unpluged), forest Live Background, Weather Widget etc.,downloaded everyting I could think of/find, constant e-mail, and constant "whatsApp" till noon (lunch), wache YouTube Videos for my whole hour lunch (still full bright mind you). Created 10 minute Install Video with 720p for work, then uploaded via WiFi, not USB. More Texing, Calls and Downloads. .... FINALLY haed to plug it in at 2:30p, with 5% battery left, I think I could have made it till 3 for sure.
That's a full 8 hours of NonStop Use of everything. I expect to get Morning-Night life from normal usage.
Final word. Test it first. I did and it's Great, not just good. The receiving end of all my texts and e-mail blasting and video look ups has an iPhone. He had to charge his at 2:30 too, but has his iPhone set to max battery save (brightness 15%, wifi off, sync off, etc.) But was using as intensly as I was

may be you have several internet connected background service running behind the scene?
My attitude towards the battery is a mixed bag.
1) PRO: It blows away the battery for the Eris (which I'm coming from)
2) CON: As these phones come to be computers with phone capability, it's really time for manufacturers to try their hardest for better batteries. I'd eagerly accept a phone twice as thick as this one if it meant double the battery life.
I find mine is only good for 10 hours (much less with heavy usage, but low calling time). I expected more.

I really call bull on this.
Coming from the world of Airsoft, I'm no stranger to battery performance.
Most of these performance myths are hold overs from the Ni-Cad days and don't apply to modern batteries.
Call Bull all you want. But it was true to the N1 and so far its been true to my battery. It does not last the first few days and gets better after a few charge cycles.
Frankly, everyone believes whatever they want on batteries. I for one take it as a user by user experience. I watch my battery life a lot, but I also like to have Google Reader and Google Listen syncing.
I'm at 30% right now and 12 hours unplugged. What I wouldcall moderate use. Its not as good as my captivate on custom rom / kernel but its far from bad enough.for me to complain about

Andriod sucks the battery, bigger battery on Atrix didn't help much. Google need to optimize the OS for better battery management. I am disappointed coming from Samsung Focus & iPhone 4, both have superior battery life. BTW, I am on Day#4, conditioning the battery didn't help any so far..

Looking at all the comments - I would say the Atrix is within range -- I knew when I saw the 1950 mAh (or whatever the exact spec) that the tegra processor must really be a power hog -- the new processor, along with the huge screen is going to draw a lot of power. Comparing to other phones with single core processors and screens even 20% smaller is not reasonable.
Definitely a good point... going to be interesting to see how well other dual core are going to hold up. That will be a better comparison.
Is that battery really a 1930mAH? The size looks like any 1500mAH battery isn't it?
I managed to get close to 16 hours of 'normal' use, meaning I wasn't trying to drain it, nor was I trying to conserve battery. I took the phone off the charger at 3pm and made it all the way to 2pm the following day with about 20% left. That's 23 hours, but I subtracted out the time the phone was on while I was asleep, 8 hours (nighttime mode).
Hmm hearing all these replies i believe i have a defective battery. I unplugged mine today at 5:15AM and now it's 2:18PM and it's just gave me the 15% beep. I've sent about 25 texts and played some words with friends. I've got watchdog installed and no apps seem to be out of control. I'm wondering if a factory reset would fix the issue or if i should return it.

try going to your dialer and entering *#*#INFO#*#*
Look under the battery usage and check the different items. Is anything using a significant amount? it could be a rogue app.
I will say MotoBlur has a lot running in the background. About twice as much as vanilla android.
I have turned most of this off and I do know that is helping my battery life.
Just got the phone 2 days ago and the battery life does not look very promising. Phone can only last about 15hrs after a full charge with light wifi/3g usage and no auto sync. Quite disappointing.

I remember my X10 having the same problems when I got it, give it a a few weeks and it should start giving you better battery life. If that doesn't solve it, I remember a firmware update for the x10 that came out that improved the battery life a lot, so maybe they could do that for the Arc.

The battery should improove, I got mine on Monday.
I charged mine on Wensday morning and it lasted until Friday morning, with backround
sync on, 2G the first day, 3G on all second day, some sms, listning to music and a call
both through skype over WiFi and normal, both calls lasted over an hour.
I read somewhere this phone doesn't have "Auto brightness"? maybe this is why battery is poor.

It does, it's just subtle. You have to actually be looking for it, and there's no way to disable it.

I'm having a similar problems with Battery life, gets to 7% within 14 hours - not what I expected since the battery seems fairly large.
I have wifi on, GPS off, bluetooth off, Push email on, a number of calls through the day. Very disappointing at the moment.
I remember somewhere reading about how to charge the battery properly, I did it on my HTC Desire, it probably gave me like another 20% after doing it - if anyone knows please let me know... I think it went something like:
1. Charge the phone whilst the phone is off
2. When fully charged pull the power and turn on
3. connect the power again until fully charged
4... can't remember the rest or even if the above was correct?
If you want longer battery life for the times when going near a electric socket is not an option, just do what I did whenever I went travelling somewhere - buy an additional battery, charge it and keep it in your bag or whatever, and then just pull it out when your battery dies.
As for battery life of smartphones in general, I had pleasure of toying around with x10 and my x8, the battery life fluctuated at times. In the start it barely lasted a day or two without usage, now my x8 can usually go for like 5 days without charging.
It's deffo very weird, but whatever.

That's a good suggestion - however it isn't really what I am after, I need my phone to last until bed time before I charge it.
Now I know this is a new phone and we all go a bit nuts when we get them, using them heavy, seeing what they can do etc - buy yesterday I made a point of using my phone exactly how I normally use my phone (once the novelty has worn off) and the battery life is POOR!
Yeah well, in my experience, battery tends to start being a lot better after a week of owning a device, at least when it comes to mobile phones.
I'm not the type of guy who acts like a little child when he gets his new toy ( in this case, a mobile phone ), so I'd like to believe my experiences can be used as sort of a benchmark in these cases.
As I said, both x8 and x10 batteries lasted very little for me in the beginning, gradually expanding later on - x10 could last 2-3 days without charging with just moderate usage ( SMS, maybe a bit of web browsing + few phonecalls ), while x8 would last 3-5.
Just report back a bit later if the battery life improved a bit.
When I get my Arc after it gets released here in Croatia, I'll do my own review of it.
Im usually really positiv about anything I buy (since I inform myself about possible disadvantages) but the battery life sure is not good at all.
Its ok, but cant call it good.
Still the device itself is quite astonishing.
Edit: switching to GSM only has given me quite a boost in stamina !
and that my dear friends is another reason why i want a neo 23% smaller screen ... more pocket friendly lol.

Well compared to the Arc, it feels chubby in my opinion. Im very sensitive about that
I've got 35% battery after 13 hours use. Thats texting, few phone calls, fb, twitter and a few games and wifi. I'm more than happy about that.

I can't complain about battery life. I've had wifi on since I turned it on, data on, skype on, bin on fb and twitter, internet etc, played a few games and still battery is on 51%. Considering the phone is brand spanking new, I am very happy with it.
Btw, has anyone else noticed the stream of iphone apps now appearing on android. Back in the day when I had an Ipod touch, I had a game called Tap Tap Revenge. N you'll never guess what I just found
Like the x10 it would take some time for the battery to work well, as the phone is quite busy in the background when you start using it for the first time. Give it a couple of days and report if your lifetime starts improving.

at first my battery lasted like 14 hours ( constant usage everything on, 3G, auto-syncing... you name it )
However, I tested my phone yesterday and found out that for the first two hours it lost 2 percent with just 10 minutes whatsapp chatting, everything on, GPS wifi... etc.... So its stand by is very good.... 9 hours chatting using whatsapp, browsing and checking XDA app and I still got 60% to go

Turning this off and that off, not using this app or that app. Dreaded enemy "wake locks". Turning brightness down and generally Not using all these great devices have to offer to squeeze out more battery life. Even to the extent of over 24 hours.
We have a phenomenal and powerful device that does a whole lot with a huge screen and a ton of great BG apps updating all kinds of information we enjoy these devices for.
MOST of all we all have the (getting rare) opportunity to swap out an inexpensive battery in less than 30 seconds be up and running for another 5-10 hours depending on our enjoyment and use.
Do people not have electricity? They cannot charge every night? They can afford a $600 phone (or $300 subsidized) and $600 plus a year for service but cannot buy a $20 battery in order to actually USE the device as designed and go through all kinds of contortions, apps, settings, and worse, anguish at running out of juice after (gasp) 8 hours?
People getting hung up on "benchmarking" and posting screen shots of phones on battery for 3 days...(of course rarely used) to squeeze and extra 30 minutes.
TURN IT OFF!! bet the battery lasts well over a month. You win!
I guess I just don't understand the "issue" with a device where batteries can be swapped out so easily.
I get maybe 10 hours normally with everything on and at minimum updating. I have infinite screen on and turn it off when I am done using it. (hate those timeouts while reading something). FB and news updates at minimum. Maps always running latitude. If its there its on BT, Screen rotation, GPS, I just don't worry about battery life as I would rather carry an extra battery in my desk at home auto or work and in my wallet than not USE the device as designed.
Personally I would never buy another phone without the ability to swap out a battery lest I would gain have to "ration" my use of such a great device which would be akin to a witnessing a gay man win a date with a single and seductive Angela Jolie . Why bother?
Am I alone here? Anyone else consider battery life as much a non issue as I do on these Samsung phones?

As an example, on GB I would about 1% battery per hour if the phone was idle.
When I upgraded to LPY, I was losing 2-3% per hour, and sometimes higher, because the phone was not going into deep sleep.
This might not seem much of a difference for just 1 hour, but over the course of a day, it is a huge difference.
Now I'm on LPF, my battery drain is about the same, or lower than GB when idle.

I guess "abnormally high" is debatable. For me it would be a 80% battery crapping out before then end of a 2 hour movie.
A day is only 24 hours long and I assume people will sleep for 6-8 hours so Even a 5% drain per hour would mean more than 16 hours of standby with 20% remaining!! How can that be an issue? I doubt my phone "deep sleeps" I have BG apps running all the time with notifications. One extra battery solves all issues. No need for special apps, tweaking this and that, flashing this and that simply for battery life.
If people sleep 6-8 hours during a 24 hour period they can easily and consistently charge their batteries. A 3% drain per hour would not be an issue. If we watch movies and play games we already know the battery will drain within a few hours. Pop in another battery and brand new again.

I am normally near a power source. I am either at work and charge via USB or in my car or at home.
The issue is the past 3 days I was out and about (malls, hotels, restaurants and so on) and was not near a power source for more than 10 minutes. My battery died in about 4 hours of usage. Mostly checking email, instagram and facebook.
I keep my brightness at full strength by the way (unless if the lights are off in bed).

If your phone is working as intended, battery life issues are not really an issue.
It basically means your phone sleeps when its supposed to.
However, some devices never go into deep sleep due to some issue with kernel or a rogue app. Thats where the battery problem comes in.

Thats not normal.
I turn off data and wifi on my Note when I go to sleep (6 hours also) and I loose about 5 to 10 %.
This is with telephone signal only. No data or wifi.
to the post #7. So how come it didn't happened in stock GB previously? In GB I lost about 1 % overnight when in airplane mode. Reliability of batteries on this phone is a big deal, unfortunatelly.
Battery is always an issue. Nobody likes running to the charger every 3 hours. They want to charge and preferably when we are not using it, when we sleep.
So yes, it does not comply with expectatoin with continuous use. So yes its an issue. At least for me
Next to this having the enduser juggle with what wakelocks are or other battery eaters are dont help much. That counts for all smart phones.

There is also the issue about well behaved v badly behaved apps. I've installed apps and my battery life has plummeted, normally due to the app writing tons to the system log as it doesn't run well on my device.
In that situation it's nice to know the phone generally isn't sucking masses of juice itself so you aren't caught out and about with no battery left.
As the OP says, I guess I could carry a spare battery, but I could also carry a spare phone (my old Nokia 6310 used to last weeks on a charge) - and I don't want to do either. I want the battery on my phone to survive general use and still be able to be used for calls if needed. For me, it's not about €20\$20 for a battery, it's about the hassle of having to carry another thing around with me all the time and make sure I'd remembered to charge the damned thing when I actually needed it.
Personally, I use my phone like a tablet and as a phone and generally get 1-2 days out of it no problem. That said there are definitely some battery drain issues with the official German ICS build and it's worth protecting yourself against unnecessary drain if possible.

And there is your only problem.........it's not "airplane" mode while you sleep. You could charge while you sleep. Again problem solved.

The issue is the past 3 days I was out and about (malls, hotels, restaurants and so on) and was not near a power source for more than 10 minutes. My battery died in about 4 hours of usage. Mostly checking email, instagram and facebook.
I keep my brightness at full strength by the way (unless if the lights are off in bed).
Yes, so battery is an issue.

I happen to believe it's asking far to much of a device once used only as a phone and now as a notebook computer, music player, movie player,gaming platform, big screen, GPS, on and on to be able to operate without expecting batteries to wither within hours. I bought extra batteries so I can use all the functions without worry. There are performance issues people strive to enhance. I get that. But battery life is counter productive to enhancing performance.
I cannot understand all the teeth gnashing about battery life with all the options available Especially those of us who are power users. . not the least being charging while asleep. So many post battery loss while sleeping...... That's what chargers are for.

Sometimes. I go to music festivals where we camp for up to 5 days at a time. I may have access to a powerpoint for 30 mins a day, but not always. I carry spare batteries, but that doesn't mean I want my phone sucking my battery like crazy.
When travelling around, I use my phone more often than normal (gmaps etc)... If I'm away from the hotel for 12 hours +, again, having decent battery life is not an unreasonable thing to want.
My Desire HD (yes I know, smaller screen, slower cpu), could pull over 30 hours out of a battery with conservative use (without turning the radios off).
I still wouldn't give up my Note, but having to recharge each time I get home is pretty annoying.

I find it funny that a post complaining about people complaining about battery life ends up with people's comments complaining about battery life!
Seriously, though, when those rogue apps steal my precious battery, I get annoyed. I paid for the damned thing, and I want to use it when I want to use it, not find it is half-drained.
I use it pretty normally, and charge it every day (new batteries are cheap). I carry a spare in my wallet too.
I sometimes spend four hours a working day on the phone, BT all day, plus an hour or two screen and WiFi on. If I have managed it OK (by killing battery stealing apps) I get about 50 to 60% left. If not, I can be down to 30% after that. That may not be enough for the rest of the day.
Why should it be a problem that people like to get a full day from one battery? It is not difficult, although you do need Root. Shame on Samsung that it is necessary, when it is clearly possible.

Lol I was seeking those who don't have issues. And was hoping for a discussion on how they deal with battery life without rationing or tweaking....not more complainers
It's a problem of unrealistic expectations.IMO When you look at the device it self and what it's capable of.
Yeah Samsung could have put a larger battery and fatter back on the phone but people would complain about that. Those solutions are available for power users as well. I think we are lucky to have a device where we have options to solve a basic issue other than not using functions. Apple and HTC do not have the same luxury.

I'm a light user with the occasional call and sms and my battery last ~6 days. Phone is 3 moths old. However, I find that my battery usage is very dependent on signal strength. I usually get 4 bars and when that happens battery drains like 10% a day and when it is down to 1-2 bars then it can be 3 times that. I guess I'm fortunate that I get 4 bars most of the time in the office and at home.
I have a battery monitor widget installed and I must say that it makes me paranoid of using the phone and causing high drain. May uninstall it soon and use the phone as it should be used.
My expectations are pretty much met when it comes to battery life of the Galaxy Note. It lasts a whole working day. That's all I need. And for exceptional situations when I don't have access to a socket I have got a spare battery.
It's clear that the Note drains the battery really fast if it's in use. Just look at the screen . I also agree that it's annoying if the battery is empty after only 1/2 working day. But some people really have to blame themselves. If you don't turn off Wifi, Bluetooth and GPS when they are not needed it's no miracle that the battery is empty in no time. If you constantly check Facebook, Twitter and the like you have to accept that battery life will be significantly shorter.
For me the worst things are Bluetooth headsets. Not only is it annoying to have one more device that has to be charged but it also constantly drains the battery of the phone. Ok those wireless headsets are comfortable but you pay for it by faster battery drain.

the different opinions about the battery issue are resulting from the different way of using the phone along with the life style.
Some may need a bckp bat. Some can make sure they are always close to a power source ( if people spend a substantial part of the day in cars f.e.) Some even need an additional external power pack, as they are not close to power outlets all day.
That all makes sense to me but doesn't make me switching off all the nice features of that great phone. It is not an a piece for exhibition in a shopping window, it is for my personal use for business and/or leisure activities. It even connects me via video when I am far away from home, it connects me to the social networks and it let me professionally do my work and up or download all info I need from my corporation. I can log in via VPN to my workplace and edit documents by collaborating with colleagues through the cloud. It shows me the way through the GPS, if I need.
It entertains me in many different way if I want, It helps me to find a good restaurant.
I do not longer use a notebook computer or a tablet.
My Notebook computer could work hardly 2 hours with the same usage like my SGN.
So, I accept that this racing machine does need after some laps a pit stop for filling up the power.

These are the kinds of responses I was hoping people people would post rather than more whining about battery life. there are plenty of those threads already.
I was hoping for a POSITIVE thread people could read to calm their perceived issues with battery life. BTW I don't use BT head sets for Music. Yes another thing to deal with charging where you cannot simpy replace a battery. I prefer the far better quality wired earbuds.
