Okay so i'm in an area where T-mobile only has edge coverage and I'm hating my life right now without 3G, but AT&T has 3G coverage here, so why won't it let me roam on to the faster network? I can pull it up under network services but it just won't let me actually roam on to the network. Is this an issue of the phone simply not having the VPN's and such? Cuz if T-mobile won't charge me for roaming I damn well wanna use it! I'm using Cyanogen's Mod and the Hero 1.3.5 theme. All I want for my birthday is 3G!!!
They use different frequency's for the 3G signal.. thats why unlocked G1's can't use att 3g even if they have a AT&T sim
Hmm... seems strange the G1 would still be able to see the network being that it's using a different signal. Is there any way around this? Cuz they just stationed me in Quantico, VA for the rest of the summer and I'm ready to shoot myself on this Edge crap! And sadly 2 months is just too short of a time to actually get internet installed lol
hum.. I doubt it will help any but thier are som VPN settings floating around the board here that haykuro made. most ROMS come with it, I doubt it'll help though.
if that doesn't help take 2 Motrin and drink plenty of water. /end navy joke
Haha, yeah I'm a corpsman, we're working down here at the Marine Corps officer candidate school, so my mantra has been "Take Motrin, hydrate, and change your socks." These past couple weeks. Yet they somehow still mess those things up lol.

Im sorry to say but you cant use 3G on AT&T. Tmobile didnt want to wait for any bands in the 1700mhz or 1900mhz band to become available, so there 3G runs in the 2100/1700mhz band and that is the only band the G1 can use to get 3G. You can see AT&T service but that is voice, not 3G. AT&T 3G runs over the 1700/1900mhz band. here is a artical about this.

You must be barely outside of their coverage area. The map shows 3g coverage on both sides of where you are. The schedule that is floating around says they are supposed to expand coverage to Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Richmond, and Virginia Beach this summer so you might get lucky and get it before you leave.
Quantico's huge, T-Mobile has no 3G service there, and WiFi is out as NMCI doesn't permit wireless APs.
You're stuck with EDGE on T-Mobile, or EDGE on AT&T if you roam, but you won't get a speed increase if you use it, just a roaming charge. The problem is the frequency, as others have mentioned. AT&T uses 850/1900 where as T-Mobile uses 1700/2100. There's no known way (yet *crosses fingers) to use a T-Mobile G1 with AT&T's 3G service, so sadly, you're going to be stuck for 2 months out there with what you have.
I have my Dream working on AT&T's 3G service, and it works quite well, but it's not a G1. I specifically bought a Rogers Canadian HTC Dream (which is band-compatible with AT&T) for this purpose. So if you're *that* desperate for 3G service, you could spring for a Rogers Dream or Magic phone, but they aren't cheap. Additionally, they don't run custom ROMs yet (we just got root on the Rogers Dream this morning, and the Rogers Magic was only last week). So... There is no perfect solution for you yet if you want 3G and root. I've been living on my ADP1 with EDGE for 5 months now, and it isn't *that* bad, I guess.
On the more "bleeding edge" frontier, there's speculation that if one were to flash the Rogers dream radio to the T-Mobile G1, that it would do 3G on AT&T instead of T-Mo, but nobody's been able to get it done yet. A few people say it's the same chipset, it'll work, a few others say it won't, but till somebody tries it, we'll never know for sure. Either way, it's not currently possible as we don't have a Rogers Dream radio image.
So, there's your options I'm afraid. And something else to consider - even though AT&T says they have 3G, check with somebody else who has their service to see if they're actually getting it first. Quantico is a huge base, and there's no cell towers on it to my knowledge. So it's possible that nobody is getting 3G signal there, on either network.
Hello,
I'm thinking about switching to the mytouch 4G. T-Mobile's info on their site is a little thin. How do I know for SURE that the phone will get HSPA+ for video calling where I live? Is there some way people have for figuring this out? If I call T-Mo, I'm sure they're just gonna refer to their main 3G map. Can someone help at all?
Any experiences trying to use the camera with just a 3G connection?
Thanks!
Currently using a mytouch 4g unlocked/rooted on a local carrier, I would just recommend purchasing a sim card and try it out for a few days or weeks. I think thats what I'll end up doing for, no contract plan and just try it out for awhile. If I like it make the switch, tmobile data is what you should look for on their site. My area shows that its strong, and at work its strong as well but I tested an employees phone and the signals were weak at work.
Well that's fine, but how do I get a hold of a phone to try for a few days? Nobody I know has it and I doubt that T-Mo's gonna give me a loaner.
Video call works just fine with standard 3g for me. Also their map shows what areas has 4g and 3g the 4g areas are darker purple. But that doesnt mean backhaul is in place

Do you think hd2 owners who have at&t will get to use tmobiles wavelength and finally get more than edge network from this happening??
For reference if new to this subject at&t and tmobile both have an EDGE network on the same wavelength so on an unlocked tmobile hd2 one can use the slow 2g internet connection of at&t, but the 3g networks run off of different bands so an at&t # can't connect to any 3g whatsoever, with at&t's purchase of tmobile wouldn't at&t have to utilize tmobiles 3g wavelength in order to still provide 3g and 3.5g to everyone with tmobile phones that aren't compatible with at&t's current network? If so then I'm personally benefitting from this and finally getting a decent mobile data speed on my tmobile phone with my at&t network
Please don't bash at&t here, I know they suck, I've used their service for quite some time now, I'm just looking for opinions and facts on this matter
and I know euro hd2's already pick up at&t 3g, I'm talking about tmous hardware
From what I have read it seems that in a year or so if this deal is accepted by the FCC at&t will reuse and refit tmobiles network towers/equipment to use there 4g LTE network and give it a boost while removing T-Mobile service altogether causing us T-Mobile 3g/4g users to get new phones that work on AT&T's data network so in your case I highly doubt it there really isn't a benefit for AT&T or T-mobile other then T-Mobile users will be able to have different range of phones (mostly iPhone) I really hope the FCC denies this deal not only does it kills another service provider option limiting us to 3 major companies and forces people escaping the high price of service from sprint, Verizon, and At&t (I've been on them all and left because of price and QOS) but also makes AT&T top dog just because they bought out another company
Yea I read about this yesterday. Highly pissed off. I can't stand at&t. Crappy phone signal, high prices, and crappy customer service. I hope this deal does not go through. Just like when sprint was supposed to buy tmobile. Hopefully it's just a rumor.

Actually I have read that its the exact opposite......AT&T has planned to upgrade all of Tmobiles service towers to the 4G LTE, leaving all T-Mobile Branded 3g phones unable to access

yeah, about 5 minutes after i posted this i saw the article stating that at&t is decommissioning tmobile's 3/3.5g towers to use them for their LTE, too bad at&t is already selling "4g" phones (ie the atrix and the inspire 4g) with no capability of utilizing TRUE 4g via LTE later on... anyone else think at&t will re-release said phones as LTE devices for $50 more than the hspa versions? i cant wait to switch to verizon personally, but im waiting for a htc pyramid compatible with verizons 4g network to switch
I received a letter from tmobile if I wanted to attend a meeting/conference for San Jose, Ca becuase my current phone service will be upgraded.... not removed....
Is this confirmed yet? If so, I am going to be HIGHLY pissed off. I HATE AT&T with a passion and refuse to use their service.
Is it possible to unlock my HD2 and my fiancee's Galaxy S Vibrant to use on Sprint or Verizon?

No, only for gsm networks, which is now going through an approval process to become a single gsm network, not confirmed until the fcc gives the word though so keep your fingers crossed!

No Tmobile and AT&T use sim cards and use totally different frequencies
If the deal passes I highly doubt that the T-mobile name will continue for long. Especially since both carriers operate on the voicestream network. This will combine T-mobile's few towers with ATT's many towers. But as someone mentioned earlier niether of these two have real 4G. It ticks me off when I see comercials calling it 4G. Only verizon is rolling out true 4G in LTE.
And in case you haven't heard. T-mobile was going down hill. They were losing money. There were talks of Sprint buying them at first. So it may be a good thing with ATT buying them up.
Hi, im in Jamaica, using my HTC MyTouch 4 G but unfortunately my phone refuse to connect to more than EDGE speed on any of the mobile network, it is unlocked & therefore able to use any SIM but no matter which networks i connect to this phone refuse to go any faster than edge. Today I tried my SIM in another phone which is an Iphone 3G, and it instantly picked up 3G speed so it prove that the problem is with my phone & not the networks, can anybody give some advice? My internet settings are all correct & entered by the technicians at all the respectful phone companies
Did you do factory restore settings.. or just factory reset the whole phone..ooh are you on Android 2.1 or 2.3. Also go to network mode and see if its not on GSM only.

the mytouch 4g and all other tmobile phones will only have 3g/4g on tmobile networks. this is because the bands that the mytouch 4g and other tmobile devices have are different from most of the world's. so unless another carrier has the same bands as tmobile, 1700/2100/AWS, EDGE will be the fastest you get. the iPhone 3G is capable of 3G because it's band is the same as most of the world's carriers network bands for 3G: 850 / 1900 / 2100.
this doesn't have anything to do with factory resetting the phone or whatever. it is simply hardware.
hope this sheds some light for you.

The reason it worked in the iPhone is that T-Mobile and att use different 3g bands and the hardware in those phones is only setup to work on those bands. Before you buy a phone, unlocked you should find out what bands your local networks use.

Just some semantics: "most of the world" uses 2100 band, which makes MT4G compatible with most existing networks in Europe and around the world. Americas (both North and South), on the other hand, happen to use mostly 850 and 1900 bands, uncommon in the rest of the world, which are indeed incompatible with MT4G.
Am still confused.. even some people and parts of the united states people still fall on or can't get pass edge..anyway...

As long as you don't have a compatible-band cellular tower of your carrier in vicinity, you won't get 3G. Not all cellular towers support 3G.
And if your carrier's band(s) aren't compatible, then you never get 3G.

thanks so so much to everyone who took time out to answer my question, i am no more happier than when i asked my question unfortunately but i am so much wiser and now with more knowledge, lol , i know now what i need to do, get rid of the phone and get myself a more compatible phone...unless there is a way to manipulate or change the network factory/hardware settings in the phone???...any ideas?
Nope. Some phones are restricted to certain bands by software (radio build), but unfortunately this restriction seems to be in HW.

With some God like skills you may be able to remove the HW antenna from a T-Mobile phone and replace the one in this phone. While I would not suggest it. I didn't want to tell you there was NO way to do it.
I hope someone in this thread can answer the same kinda question for me, but in a different way. Right now I'm in the United States on Simple Mobile's 40$ 3G Plan, but I noticed on my MyTouch 4G (Running the latest RoyalGinger) that I am connected at 4G speeds, however shouldn't my indicator for Data/internet connector on the phone read off as 3G instead of 4G? When i ran a bandwidth test on my phone from DSL Reports Mobile Speed Test, I got the following from a 100k file.
124 kbit/sec
0.287s latency
6.72s d/l time
Is that how fast 3G usually is? or should I be going faster? Thanks to anyone who can help.
I have read a lot already on this site about my issue just wanted to clear up a few unanswered questions.
I am looking to switch from Verizon to t-mobile because of prices and terrible reception where I'm living in Riverside Ca. So I know that I can simply put in a t-mobile sim and change to the correct gsm settings and get cell reception (correct me if I'm wrong) but what about getting LTE from t-mobile? I have looked to see if the new 700 mhz band covers here and Ventura County Ca. (where I am when I'm not in Riverside) and it does so I should get LTE without having to put in a custom Rom, correct?
I'm a novice when coming to roms (plus a failed attempt) so i would like to avoid them as much as I can. Will do it if I have to though... All about saving $$$$
Thanks for the replies.
@mjmjpfaff
I know what your saying about saving $$$ phones these days are almost the half of a old car/price of a motorcycle.
If your Verizon phone is not simlocked and also has support for the LTE bands which T-Mobile is using then it's possible to get LTE working without the need to buy another phone. If it's mentioned on internet on multiple sites that the G2 supports that LTE band then you can get it without a custom rom.
In my eyes it's possible to have working LTE from T-Mobile on your verizon phone, but to be 100% sure I would contact Verizon support about your question.
I also had many fail attempts with custom roms first but after you get how it works, you can flash anything as smooth as butter:good:
you could also wait for a VS980 G2 user who had the same issue as you but I think that it would take you more time awaiting for a reaction from somebody since not many people are browsing the Q&A section.

I found this on another thread:
"I just switched from a Verizon Galaxy Note 2 to the G2 since all I can get from it with t-mobile is H+ speeds (about 4mbs-6mbs). I inserted the t-mobile sim into the verizon g2 and it automatically switched to global mode and I then went in to edit the apn settings to fast.t-mobile.com. 4G LTE is working just fine on stock rom kitkat update (I'm in L.A. suburb). Speeds range from 15mbs to 30mbs+ depending on where I am in the city. Here are some screenshots"
This guy is pretty much in my area and sounds like he did not do anything other switch in a t-mobile sim...

Thanks for your reply.
I'm using my droid mini on tmobile and am getting LTE speeds. You should see them if you're in an area where the network was refarmed to 1900mhz
Keep in mind the fastest speeds you will see is 21Mbps unless you swap for the Tmobile Verizon which goes up to 42Mbps and higher.
