My light sensor is a bit screwy - the keyboard backlight and capacitive buttons don't know whether to be on or off. Is there a way to set it so that screen on = keyboard/capacitive buttons on?

Same here! In dark or light, doesn't matter. Text, Google talk, friendstream... same problem.
This has come up a few times, and the programming in the stock ROM for how the light sensor works with this seems to be rubbish.
I'm sure that with a custom ROM this would be changeable, and maybe there are even apps that might help, but so far I don't know of anything specific on that. Anyone ?
This is really bothering. I hope an ota update will fix this soon. We should report this to htc support it seems...

Bumped back up, since this is still bothering me. I've been through several Roms and it's the same on all of them.
Any ideas, people?
Try cm6 or cm7 (might as well get gingerbread with cm7).
You can manually set automatic backlight, keyboard, and capacitice button light values.

I'm currently on a CM7 based rom, and I assume you're talking about the Automatic backlight settings area? What do I need to alter to make:
1. Screen on = capacitive buttons on
2. Keyboard open = keyboard backlight on
Any help would be great!
Check "use custom" then "edit other levels..." then set the button and keyboard values to something above 0.
Keep in mind that the keyboard backlight intensity cannot be adjusted, but the capacitive button backlight can go from quite dim to almost blindingly bright.

i have a question im running andromadus 12. and love it, id just like to have my keyboard light up when i open it. is there anyway to add this
ok so i discovered on some roms if you have the keyboard open, and adjust the brightness or click on or off automatic brightness while keyboard is open. the light will come on. however you have to keep doing it everytime which can become rather annoying. This seems to work on andromadus version 12. if anyone has any other fixes (permanent) itd be greatly appreciatted.
If using sense 3.5 flash rc tweaks and you can get keyboard lights working in settings.

Has anyone figured out how to extend the timer on the keyboard or are there any tools out there that will make the light stay on longer? The one second is really annoying.
Sorry if this question has been posted some where else used the search and looked through several pages.
giving this post a bump, as it really annoys me too.
im getting good at tapping the trackball to light up the keyboard. although sometimes it scrolls around and its annoying.
the worst part, is that i can slide my keyboard open, and before the screen can refresh and rotate and show me the text message box, the keyboard light is off.
epic fail on the testers part imo
download power manager, you can set the time there
I still can't get the keyboard to stay on. What setting is it in power manager.
Qtronix
You have to go to the profile you want the keyboard light on in and edit it.
For example, go to the battery profile and edit it by either long pressing it or by selecting it with the trackball then pressing MENU->edit.
They keyboard light option is available in the stay awake->while keyboard is open setting.
Sweet.... Thanks!
I don't use power manager. I have no use for it and use Toggle Settings to change my profiles.
Does anyone know of any other app or a script that can be run that will change the setting?
I just want the light to stay on as long as the hardware keyboard is open!
Hi All,
Xperia's hardware keyboard is very good, and the backlight is really of help when the ambient goes dark or even darker.
The HW keyboard is also quite cool in the daylight, the buttons' surface letters are very clear and crisp.
But here we have, an especial feature: needless automatic backlight, in spite of bright (or not so) day light? The letters become blurry not to say hardly visible. Not to mention this is wasting battery, too.
Is there a way to turn off the HW keyboard backlight, when it's not needed?
XDA gurus, help our batteries live longer and us users type faster! Please...
I hear you!
Yeah i've noticed the same problem, so ive started making a program to set the brightness etc, ive interrogated the registry for the backlight and have a small app working now whare all the brighness levels and timmings etc can be modified.
I was going to add a menu on the progam to changes the settings based on time of day / profile used on the phone, the rogram would need to be ran in the backgroud all the time but im sure it would not drain the battery much to do this as its a lightweight process that will wait for the profile to change.
I can put up what ive done, its very simple and you can suggest improvments / whatever.
Main functions would be:
allow user to change settings based on their currently selected sound profile (on, vibrate, off) and they have individual settings.
Allow the user to change all backlight related values (I have 11 of them editable in my program currently.
I would like this to have the keyboard light off during the day really as the keyboard light coming on makes it hard to see keys during the day.

Sounds promising! Can you post your app? I would like to try it out.
Here you go...
It just modifies timers and sensors on/off at the minute, but its a start. I made it to give better control over the backlight for myself, happy to help others!
Thanks Andrew! Longlive Ireland!

Thanks, bud!
So Features
What do you want it to do?
look better? YES , lol!
i was going to use tab screen to seperate out the info, there are some more values to add that can be changed, i need to group them together (eg ac and battery ones) and have a proper explanation on them (input value limit etc.)
So let me know what are the features you would like (in order of priority) and i will get cracking, lets see if we can make a good little app here.
By now I only wanted the app to turn off keyboard completely. Hope the author will succeed in that. Though I'm afraid the HW keyboard backlight settings are hardware related issue solely, nothing to do with registry/driver routine.
All the other settings are quite handy to play with the backlight of the device. Perhaps a bit more detailed instructions and explanations will be just fine.
Yet the 'About' and 'Copyright' options, maybe some easter eggs - without it the prog is a no-go
Have you tried adding the key HKCU\Software\SonyEricsson\Illumination\QWERTYBrightness ? I found this one when digging into the illumination application.
This will override the automatic brightness values for the keyboard, setting it to a fixed brightness when the light sensor turns it on.
I've set mine to 50, which works fine even if the light goes on at daylight.
Thanks bro, this is very useful hint!
I noticed also, that with '50' (it's not 'key' actually, but a 'value', I input this as a REG_SZ value), light sensor works with HW keyboard much better, more adequate - no backlight when in sunlight or electric lamps at home or in office, slightly dimmer backlight when in the dark. That must save battery life too!

But still, isnt there anyway to turn it off?
Hi,
is there any way to configure the hw buttons backlight behaviour? In WinMo there was a little app called Keypad LED Backlight, which kept the HW buttons backlid as long as the display was on. I like that behaviour very much, especially when you are using your phone at night.
Right now the hw buttons backlight turn off after a certain time, even when the screen is still on.
Are there any apps or mods to configure the backlight behavious?
thanks
boba
I looking for this as well.I've tried some things but nothing seems to work.

Where might I try poking around if I wanted to have the trackball, and the call and end buttons light up with the screen turning on?
Sent from my FroShedYo V10-ERIS using XDA App
on cm roms (like Froyoshedyo), i believe your question was how to make the buttons light up when your phone screen turns on. I dont know if there is a way to turn on the trackball light? probably a program in the market. as for the answer/end and soft keys, home screen->menu->settings.>cyanogenmod settings->user interface->automatic backlight->check use custom under light levels. then go to edit other levels. column on the right is buttons, 255 is on and 0 is off. set them all to 255 to have the front lights turn on whenever your phone screen is on. sorry I cant help with the trackball. also, please post questions in the q&a section in the future. thanks.
Thanks for the reply but my question is deeper than just the settings. I want to edit the system files which control these lights. I don't really like the softkey lights so I wont mess with them. If you've used kaos gingerbread you'll notice they don't light up. Just the answer and end keys do.
Im aware of covedesign from the market. I don't know if pulling it apart will show me where to look but I might try if no one else knows where to look.

ah. sorry didn't realize. LEDs Hack is another program on the market that I use to kill my LEDs when my eris is plugged in. the eris is not officially supported but the "sprint htc hero" (not sprint htc hero android 2.2) works for the eris leds. it has an option for trackball led, but it doesnt seem to work for the eris. it can turn various leds on, off, and change state based on different circumstances such as plugging in or time ranges. perhaps the developer would have some idea where to point you. http://www.danvelazco.com

This could just be an unfixed bug ... KGB is still in the development stages, it's not an official release.
Using Antutu Tester, I tested the multi-touch, using the experimental kernel. I placed four fingers on the screen, one at a time and they all registered. I then slightly moved all my fingers across the screen, and then the others disappear. Can anyone confirm this? Also got some weird activity with the trackpad wake. When pressed sometimes only the capacitive keys light up, and not the screen. I have to use the power button to power the screen on.
EDIT: Could this be overclocking related?

The screen not coming sounds like it could be OC related.
Question, did you change any of the OC settings manually? If not, I'd recommend opening the OC Beater application and set your screen-on profile to something like 245min-998400max, and screen-off profile to 245min-384max. Let me know if that fixes the problem with the screen not coming on. (If so, I'll add something to the ROMs OP about setting the OC parameters manually if using the experimental kernel)
Ran the multi-touch test using the stock kernel, all 4 fingers registered and moved properly when I moved my fingers.
Makes sense why it's the experimental kernel, right?

Yeah it makes sense, more fun to play with!
I did actually manually set the oc to the settings you suggested and now I cannot recreate the tp wake issue.
I also had an issue using the "use_4g_icon" customization when flashing. Definitely have it in the root of the glite direc, still no change in the icon. I even did a full wipe and started fresh, still a no go.
Then I tried just changing the icon myself using ROM Toolbox, and boy did it hate that. Status bar fc after a full reboot, had to restore the back up I made. I assume this is because of the framework changes for the apm?
