Just got a new Tab from a carrier shop here in Kuwait with some, let's just say, undesirable applications preinstalled which I would like to get rid off. Read all (well most of the posts) but getting nowhere.
Upgraded to new firmware through KIES.
downloaded Z4ROOT and rooted succesfully (or at least that,s what the app is telling).
Tried to copy the nv_data.bin file to my sd card - cannot be done
Tried to open nv_data.bin in HEXEDITOR - no can do
Tried to delete application - nope
So some help is obviously needed here if anyone is kind.
Best regards
You did install busybox, did you?
Which firmware? Post what you are doing on the adb shell. Be specific or we can't help you.
You're right should be more specific.
Well I did not install busybox (no idea what it is for) and
Firmware version is 2.2
Baseband version P1000JXJK2
Kernel version 2.6.32.9 [email protected]#1
Build No FROYO.JPJK2
Hope this clears it.

Busybox gives you most shell commands (including, but not limited to, cp).
Thanks.
Installed BUSYBOX and copied nv_data.bin file to sd card for modification as per How to carrier/SIM unlock the Galaxy Tab topic from 17/11 but the address 0x181469 could not be found.
Also tried to uninstall the preinstalled apps - no success
need z4 unroot it
busybox
root explorer
Z4 unroot, DONE
BUSYBOX installed DONE
ROOT EXPLORER installed DONE
So
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8942669&postcount=94
totaly worked for unlocking the SIM/carrier. Very easy and no problems encountered. Inserted a different SIM and made a call. Perfect. Thank you for all the work that made this possible.
However it still does not let me delete the APPs that came preinstalled with the Tab.
I am guessing this is something to do with the Kernel version 2.6.32.9 [email protected]#1. How can this be undone (another guess is flashing the ROM but i have no idea what it involves so back to the reading and learning)?
If somebody has a simple to follow guide and resolution to this please let me know the thread. Thanks
Have you mounted /system as r/w in Root Explorer?
Regards,
Dave
Dave, to advanced for me. How do i do that?
Just an update.
Managed to successfully flash the tab to the european version using guide from
[HOW-TO] Flash your at&t Tab to make calls + 1900+850 WCDMA - UPDATED
thank you it worked fine and i achieved what i was looking for: no more undesirable apps.
But, i lost the 3g and cannot get it back using the same guide as above.
With my limited knowledge of the whole thing I am guessing that this is to do with the modem.bin file. Will try to download an arabic version of firmware, extract it and try to use the modem file and see if it will work. will post an update just in case anybody is interested,
regards
I found it rather embarassing posting replys to my own thread all the time but I feel it might help somebody so what the hell!!
I finally got my 3G working on the Tab. A silly thing really: APN (Access Point Name) was deleted during flash and by adding and activating the APN i got my 3G restored.
Anyway, thank you guys for all the replies and help. Really good forum with a lot of useful stuff.

Well, since I am not alone wondering about this - I have a mms fix that is supposed to be placed in the root catalog on the SD card: root/system/
The word root seem to have many meanings:
= crack a complete OS.
= place a file in the root catalog.
= use a file managing software within the phone to place a file in a root catalog that is not visible from windows.
Being a n00b I have a hard time following the discussions because of this.
Root your HTC HD2 running android
To start, I am a newbie. The terms "root" has been so difficult for me to follow. I understand why people are getting confused. Anyway, I just rooted my HD2 running froyostone w/sense v3.3. I do apologize if I don't know all the terms and correct language. I needed to change my User Agent profile (UAprof) so that I could receive MMS messages here in Japan using Softbank. BTW, I finally upgraded my Universal for a HD2 only last week. I was hoping to get the rumored HD3, but it was only a rumor so I got the HD2 instead; The HD7 doesn’t tickle me because I think WM7 is lacking. Anyway, I only learned how to installed android a couple of days ago. I originally installed darkstone froyo v1.7. I added some Softbank apps from the marketplace, set the APN, and got MMS to work without any problems. Well I decided to upgrade to my current build. The mms of course stopped working. I spent days searching the internet for how to instructions on how to fix my mms problem and all the answers had the same conclusion. I have to root your android and replace the system files. The term root has numerous meanings in this case and they are all correct. Here’s a brief description how I rooted my HD2 with android. These first steps are in no particular order. Get the new mms.apk file. Get the APN information. Download Android SDK and get the windows USB driver files. Okay, you can download from the android marketplace apps that will root your Android. What these means is that it gives you superuser access to the system files in your phone. Now as I said earlier the mms.apk is in the root of your android phone and is read-only. So you can't paste anything in the folder even as a superuser. Also, you can't browse the files in windows because they are hidden, and no you can't unhide them in system properties as far as I know. So people are telling you the files are in the root of your phone (or our case SD card) but you can't see them without special apps. Long story short, used the cmd prompt in windows to root (which in android language means gain access to the phone root file system) the Android build on the SD card, removed the old mms.apk file, and installed the new one. These instructions are easily searchable on the internet. I will be more then happy to explain the details on how to install this MMS fix with anyone interest. After exhausting myself trying to find this answer on my own, I want people to know three things. One, yes you can root you HD2 with Android build, although earlier comments are right that it is kind of already rooted but it still needs to be rooted to install certain apps. Two, an unlocked phone can send/receive MMS in Japan on Softbank. Third and final, yes there is an app that can change/mask your UAprof.
Looks like you're also a newbie to allot of things then, like sentence breaks, paragraphs etc.
eh....
i have a htc hd2
z4root say my phone is rooted,
then when i try to activate the root ecxplorer in ES file explorer, it tells me that my phone is not rooted...
confused...
so i can understand people asking how to root an hd2...
Root HD2 Android
PLease can someone explain very clearly how we can root HD2?? I'm really not that expert and need your support. BR
You're joking right? did you read this thread at least to the 3rd or 4th post before posting this question? You don't need to root the hd2, all roms for nand already have root access! Please don't post questions when the answer is there if you take a second to read.

it's a perfectly valid question and one which nobody has actually answered with any decency.
To say "your ROM is already rooted" is AN answer, but it doesn't help or inform very much at all.
What he's trying to do is simply update a file in the file system that requires 'root' access and is unable to do so using tools such as root explorer which inform him he does NOT have root access.
So perhaps the tool is incorrect?
Either way, he can't update his phone.
A large number of threads will state "you need root access to update file x, or file y", and yet despite being told he HAS root access he can't view the complete file system, let alone update some files on it.
Is it really too much to read HIS issue and try to help him, rather than glibly repeat 'you have root access'?
Download z4 root from market
What are you referring to? Not the OP or the person I replied to said anything regarding files and root access to do anything, their questions were plain as white, how can I root my hd2? So once again who are you refering to that I didn't see such detailed question regarding having issues with files that needed root access. Even the OP replied and thanked for getting an answer.

You have tried Root Explorer and it hasn't worked? Odd. Well atleast you know it's rooted as it has SU on it. Try ES File Manager. Google how to access the root files using it. You just need to flick through a few menus.

and well, the last one, if i can get a guide to do it, wich rom could you recommend me? to get all the potential of this cell phone XD hah

Guide for unlocking fastboot and flashing custom roms.

My app root toolbox will flash a recovery image, all download links in my signature.
For root access use z4root. Don't update to 2.1 because z4root doesn't work on some versions of it.
Also have a look here before you change roms/unlock fastboot

Hey there
Nice to see you're still on 1.6 , We really need your help right now!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123968
If you haven't already rooted , Follow these steps :
1. Download http://bit.ly/9wAKC5 and transfer to phones SD Card
2. Download Astro File Manager in Market (Or any other file manager)
3. Open the file manager and locate the application you downloaded
4. Click on the File and Install the Universal Androot .apk
5. Run Universal Androot and select Superuser for 2.0 - 2.2
6. Click 'Go Root'
7. Follow any restart prompts
8. Go back into market and download Terminal Emulator
9. Follow the instructions from the CODE box on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123968
10. The files will be created in the backup1.6 folder on the SD
11. Using a computer, .ZIP these files and upload them to the filesharing site of your choice
12. Share the link to us
13. Be very proud of yourself, you've helped us all
Then after , I would install 2.1 using LG Software Updater (Easiest Method)
But EVERYTHING is deleted , Including contacts and SMS when doing so. To backup contacts , click Contacts , Press Menu and press Export then Export to SD
To backup SMS I recommend SMS Backup and Restore from Market.
Hope I helped Jamie
haha okei, i'll try to do that so i can give you a recovery imagine of 1.6
and you told me to upload to official 2.1 android through lg site,, i am known that 2.1 is just, mmm , as 1.6 XD i mean, you have problems to install things in the sd, and many apks does not work, and the flash is dead x.x haha
but well, i'll do that first before upgrading to another version!
Hi,
I Would like to Root My Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant. Currently It is upgraded to Froyo (build Number: FROYO.UVKB5), which i did via mini kies on June.
By Default the set was network locked and i Unlocked it from a store.
I would like to know how can i root the device without hassling too much.
Will i lose all my content of phone if i root it?
When i got the set, it was network unlocked; but after master resetting it was stuck into VIBRANT Screen, that's why i gave it to a store and they unlocked it.
I am unsure whether the device will be brick again if i root it.
I have checked the noob guide thread, But my confusion is I already have a Folder on my internal SD Card called update (1.7mb) & a folder called Vibrant_AOSPish_JK2_v1.1 (156mb). See attached snapshot
I installed titanium backup application, but its saying it required ROOT access.
Would appreciate if anyone can suggest me a way to resolve it
Thanks in advance
use SuperOneClickv1.7 and you will be fine.
I have edited my post. Will it work though?Could u please check the attached snapshot
root has nothing to do with what folders you have on your Vibrant. You can delete everything there if you want and still root your phone.
Thanks Man..It Worked
The Xperia X10 Rooting Toolkit also works flawlessy with the Samsung Galaxy Note and gives you full root access (tested by myself)

Worked for me! It was even easier than rooting an HTC Evo 4G. This thread, or at least the thread referenced in the first post, should be stickied in the Development sub-forum.
I am a Noob and I can Root my Note!
I had experience rooting a Milestone 2 with SuperOneClick and an unbranded Android Tablet with Z4Root. (Thanks to developers of these!)
Unfortunately, both these methods did not work on the Galaxy Note so I came here and found this thread.
Unfortunately, ADB drivers was an issue with the zergRush Exploit on first run. The easiest way to get around this is to install PDANet on Windows and have it install the drivers for you. No need to complete the whole installation, just watch when it's finished installing USB drivers and then when prompted to continue, just cancel. Then re-run the zergRush Exploit and it should do its magic (Again thanks to the developers who work on these!)
While I'm able to freeze some apps with ROM Toolbox, I'm unable to change boot animation or the battery icon. Would appreciate if anyone could help with this!
Rooting hav no relation to install official/crckd version of apk.
Rooting needed for those application which are needed to access your system data e.g backup etc
when you need to install these kinds of application (weather off/unoff) you needs Root.
The optional unrooting package works also perfectly (just for info)...
i have sent back my Galaxy Note to amazon just to wait for the white version of the Note.
This method won't increase your binary counter, so root and unroot it as often as you like
Never either had any problem at all after rooting it, so this method is also stable and won't crash your device in any way or crash any applications...
Root confirmed working here, superuser.apk doesn't have permissions set properly but still works, easy to fix, updates fine from market.
Awesome - confirmed working. This needs to be stickied... other websites are promoting netchips CWN kernel method instead of this MUCH simplier way.
For you noobs with a clean system (that means me!), get the following files:
Note I run a 64 bit windows box, get the 32 bit variants if necessary.
You need:
1) Latest version of Kies
www.samsung.com/ca/kies/index.html
download file for me was: Kies_2.0.3.11082_152_4.exe
2) Java:
www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
Click on jdk and download. File for me: jdk-7u1-windows-x64.exe
3) android sdk:
developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
My file was: installer_r15-windows.exe
4) zergrush root script
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
grab the zip file in that page i.e.
DooMLoRD_v1_UNROOTING.zip
and unzip it to your windows box.
Install 1, 2, 3 in that order.
Find the SDK Manager program in your sdk install directory, double click it, and download/update 'Android SDK Platform Tools'.
Note you can't run the sdk manager program from the command prompt, or it'll complain that directories are being locked.
Now follow the instructions on the zergrush page, i.e. do the 'before you begin' stuff.
Go to the directory where you unzipped the doomlord zip file, run the runme script from a command prompt, and that's it.
To test, download terminal monitor, run it, and do a 'su' then 'id' and see if it says you are root or not.
Good luck!
- Frank

Hello, I have a B5510, and had managed to root and install link2sd to free up some space on my internal memory even though I had reduced the phone's applications to the "basic essential".
I noticed that even by moving apps with link2sd, the free internal space was not increasing and was getting an error with the dalvik-cache. I tried to move the dalvik-cache to the sdext2 partition since that is where link2sd was looking for it, however accidentally removed it. Unfortunately with it I must have removed also the links to the apps on the sd card and was left with only a handful of useless applications.
After trying to find a solution for that, it seemed that the only option I had was to do a factory reset, which I did. Despite having regained access of the google market application, I am unable to log onto the internet / wifi, and register my samsung phone. The phone seems to be continuously on standby at "obtaining ip address...". If I try to set a static ip, it seems like the device is connected to the wifi but it actually isn't, or at least, I can't register it to find out since my only application with access to the internet is google market.
I don't know whether the loss of functionality is due to having removed the dalvik-cache or some samsung related applications like samsung apps. In any, I wish I could find a way to restore my phone to what it was before. I thought that maybe I could flash cyanogenmod but didn't find a version for my phone. However I really don't wish to remove the stock OS and would like to restore it as is. Do you guys have any suggestions, experiences, or any helpful advice? I really don't know what to do. I asked for help to samsung but I don't know whether they'll help since the device is rooted.

My suggestion would be to use Odin to flash your original firmware onto your handset as per this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678568
If you cannot find the correct firmware in that thread (most likely as the files have not been converted it seems...huh!) then post in this thread and ask Doky73 very very nicely to convert the firmware files for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678568
You will need to know what firmware you are currently running - you can probably check yourself on sammobile to see if that is available, once you know the stock for your phone you can search google - it may already be out there converted and ready to go!
Once that is flashed delete everything off the SD card and format and repartition it again then start afresh - good luck! :good:

Hello stokey and thanks for your quick suggestion! I've been looking all over the website trying to understand and apparently the best solution would be to flash the firmware with odin 1.85.
I've found the details of my firmware being the Italy version:
Code:
HIDSWVER B5510XXLF3/B5510ITVLF1/B5510XILE1/B5510XXLF3
ANDROIDVERSION 2.3.6
BASEBANDVERSION B5510XILE1
KERNELVERSION 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #103
BUILDNUMBER GINGERBREAD.XXLF3
and it seems I also found a download from sampro.pl
I'm hoping this goes well because it seems like I've only managed to take the situation from bad to worse so far! If you have any experience with odin, do you believe the phone (wifi especially) should work correctly after flashing?
