Anyone know how to stop thumbnail folders being created on SD card? - XPERIA X10 General

Hi,
Simple question really, the topic subject asks all I want to know, is it possible to stop all that nonsense thumbnail folders appearing in SD card folders? e.g thumbnail folder in DCIM folder, or albumthumbnails on SD root folder.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App

Why do you want to get rid of them? They speed things up considerably...

Simply coz they clog up my SD card with crap.
Also excuse my lack of knowledge, but how can the thumbnails in my camera folder speed up anything? It's still opening up a file from the same folder on the same SD card?
Sent from my X10i using XDA App

Because when you view your pics in mediascape or the gallery it loads up the thumbnail pics which are very small in size rather than load up the large scale pics which are very large in size. So Yes, they do speed up things and no they hardly put a dent in your 16GB sd card.

New memory card creating camera issue - Please help!

Hi, I have recently bought a new memory card for my hd2. It's a SanDisk 8gb micro sdhc card.
I formatted in the phone then copied across all files from my old card on my PC. Everything is working fine, CoPilot long with other preinstalled apps as well as all the other .cab files I have downloaded over the last few months. With my MP3s loaded onto the card I have about 3gb left
The problem I have is when I load up my camera, it says I have enough space left for 5 more pictures! Tried switching storage location in settings, which changed to 23 (phone memory) and back again but I still have only 5 pics remaining - for some reason it won't see card properly but the rest of my phone functions fine. I took 5 pictures to see if it was just displaying wrong, but after 5 photos, I got memory full message
Please can someone help me resolve this issue!?! Thanks!
Try changing it to Phone Memory again, then reboot.
Then change it back, and reboot.
Does it change?
hi, thanks for the quick reply. just tried what you suggested but still no luck!
I've just deleted an old video from the DCIM folder on my memory card, which was 3mb and that has given me a few extra photos available.
it seems there is an upper size limit on the DCIM folder. Maybe I could transfer all my saved pics and vids to a different folder but that is quite annoying. Has anyone else come across the DCIM folder having an upper size limit? and would it be possible to increase this?

How big was the original card? The 2Gb one?
yeah it was the 2gb one, it came with the phone from O2. Forgot to say I'm running O2's 1.43 ROM
*bump*
Still no luck on this one short of clearing my DCIM folder on the SD card. Has anyone else had issues like this when using a new memory card?

I would try and remove the DCIM folder, and let the camera app recreate it.
Try out "Update for HTC HD2 SD Card Storage Cards" at: http://www.htc.com/europe/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=297&cat=0&dl_id=825
hey thanks for the replies guys. Just installed the storage card update from HTC and that has fixed the issue. Forgot about that update so thanks for the heads up

Odd gallery issue

My gallery app has a horrible tendency of creating folders that definitely don't exist on my internal memory.
I have at least 20 folders simply named things like:
1
10
11
12
15
18
This has been going on for a while now, but it's never REALLY bothered me until now. Any idea how to fix it?
This happens to me sometimes. I think they are thumbnails from the web or some other source.

I agree ^
One of your apps might be creating folders, to name a few examples Heroes of Sparta creates a folder with a new video. NFS downloads a whole bunch of music, Bestube downloads a lot of pictures (useless), etc. So it might not be the gallery but a third party app.
It's not any of my apps.
The pictures in that folder are pictures I've taken with my camera or downloaded from people who have texted them to me. They just appear as duplicates in the gallery, even though when I look at the files on the memory stick and phone, they only exist once in the Camera/Downloads folder.
Edit: Some of these pictures SHOULD be in my downloads folder because I saved them from an MMS but aren't.
I can't seem to find the folder they're actually stored IN, though...
You can try backing up the files you know you want to keep, format the internal sd through the phone, then restore your files. That should remove any dupes on your sd. You may want to do the same with the external sd as well.

That's a great idea, thanks!
Before I do that though, there are pictures that SHOULD be in the downloads folder, but are in those weird folders. However, I can't find those anywhere with any file managers. Any idea how to find those pictures and move them to the downloads folder?

That I don't have a clue, I'm ocd about my files, they get put where I need them as soon as they hit my phone. If you're seeing them in the gallery, they have to be stored somewhere, sorry I can't offer any advice on that part.

[Q] gallery

I have always used "gallery" to view pictures that I have stored on my external micro SD card. This new ATT galaxyS4 doesn't allow it. It only displays pictures that are stored on the internal SD card.
I got root and use an app called "root explorer" is the only way to view the pictures I have stored, which is ok but there is no slide show function in root explorer.
I postponed the update that came in over the airwaves, but it processed last night while asleep. I don't see any difference except it's not rooted anymore. Gallery is still limited to viewing only the onboard chip that's full of bloatware.
Does anyone else notice gallery not seeing the external SD?

Storage and reading of the external SD card for pictures works great for me.
One thing to note if you are having problems with the gallery, is to reformat the SDCard in the phone.
I was getting laggy gallery images, and a high battery drain from the Gallery.
Reformatting the SD card cleared up all my problems!
When you open gallery, hit menu and content to display. Make sure all is selected.

Is there anyway to save all downloaded pictures/screenshots to the SD card? I wiped my phone the other day and my downloaded pictures got deleted because it was in Internal Storage

If you use stock browser anything downloaded will go to external sd. Camera also asks you to save pictures on external sd when inserted, if not it can be changed in camera settings.

I stuck a different 32 gb class 10 microSD chip in the external memory slot and gallery started working finally.
So I assume the chip I've always used needs formatting sounds like.
Thank you for the feedback.
I have a similar issue as OP. I have a 64gb Sandisk SDXC, and it came straight over from the S3 and the S4 gallery didn't see my pix from the card either nor the music player see all my music. I have to format the card in the phone then copy everything over from pc to phone via usb for the gallery and music player to see what's on my ext card. Then the phone restarted by itself, and it says the sd card is damaged, then the OTA update came just in time, updated, amd magically the Sd card was fixed, now it only see select videos and images and still none of my music. If it's in the inter sd then it's fine.
Do you guys think my sd card is shot?

It sure sounds like it. My chip still works, all I did was use the computer to format it.
The only way to tell is get another chip and put some files on it for a test.
It ticks me off they don't even populate the external SD slot with a cheap chip like they used to. ATT phones used to come with a one or two gigabyte capacity bottom dollar chip for free but alas they got even more greedy!

I used foldermount and moved the DCIM folder to the external sd, so all the setting have it looking at the mounted folder on the internal card, even the burst shots are stored right onto the external. the longer I've had foldermount, the happier i am with it. endless possibilities!

Thumbnails size is 5 gb! How to make sd card is the default location for thumbnails

Thumbnails is making phone storage very low for new data
While I have 64gb sd card that I have to move stuff to it regularly
I want some way to make the sd card is the default for everything
Or at least for these huge thumbnails as a start
I have Xperia z2 3g lollipop 5.1.1. The A.1. 232 version
Same problem here

Can you pinpoint the app that is storing such large tumbnail cache? This is not normal behaviour and can be considered as a bug. You can use CCleaner from the app store to clean this thumbnail cache. Try to do it regularly. I would uninstall the app that is causing this, this can happen if youre using more gallery apps or more file managers. You can use many cache cleaning apps like CM cleaner or Clean Master too to do this.
I think it is the Stock photo app

Then do a system cache cleaning, this is possible even trough recovery but the simplest way is to use CCleaner frim the app strore. Try it but if you get that huge cache again then something is definitely wrong.
Yeah some problem here, my thumbdata is only about 1gb but i don't have a ton of photos on my phone, i can imagine this file getting bigger if there are lot's of photos on the phone.
Deleting the files will not solve the problem as android will recreate them very fast. I see and understand the purpose of the thumbdata files but there should be a way to set max size and location for this files...
IF anyone figures a nice solution for this problem please post :good:
Edit: just had an ideia, maybe we could move the folder thumbnails to external sdcard and use foldermount or links2sd to link it to the internal memory? i can't test this right now cause i'm at work but i'll try it later if i have time.
Thanks.
I still insist this is too large thumbnail cache. There may be leftover pics thumbnails that are deleted but thumbs are still here and thats why I propose a cleaning. 5gb worth of thumbs would be equal to 50gb worth of pictures. Sony album app creates thumbs where images are located so its wise to move pics to sd card and set camera to store pics on the sd card and then thumbnails will be recreated on the sd card in DCIM folder.
- First remember the name of the /storage/sdcard0/DCIM/.thumbnails/.thumbdata file, f.e. .thumbdata3--1967290299
(if you have two files, like me, remember also the second name)
- delete this file (s)
- create a new file (or more) with the same name of the file (s) you just deleted, f.e. .thumbdata3--1967290299
that's it. Android from on is not able to create a new large thumbnail file.
Well, actually, this is not the solution for moving the .thumbnail file to sdcard, but it helps to free a lot of memory - forever.
My low budget old phone has limited internal storage and having less than 1 GB of free space i used cleaner apps to ged rid of unnecessary junk. One of the apps found 2 hidden .thumbdata files of 1.15 GB each.
I deleted them, but didn't get free space.
Tested the solutions found on the internet but it didn't work. A new file of aprox 68 MB was generated when gallery was opened again .
Because some people on the internet claim it's a sparse file, i wanted to check it by opening it in a text or hex editor. I managed to open
such a big file in a single one(NMM hex editor) and noticed there is some data only towards the end of the file, what is also confirmed by the "ls" and "du" command.
It is interesting what the editor info says - looks some kind of mounted partition/space(i don't know how to call it), other text editors call it 7190, so it's definety not a normal file with that size in the DCIM folder. Even when almost empty , the system "books" the space from the file and doesn't allow the phone user to benefit from it.
My opinion is that my first deleted files were also space left "mounted" after the erase of the 2 huge thumbdata files.
Has anyone an idea what it is ?

Good Photos SD Card Access?

When using the stock Samsung camera and stored to my SD card, I use Google Photos to edit the photos, however, I get this error when trying to delete any photo:
"Photos doesn't have access to delete item on your SD card. Go to the Gallery app to continue deleting"
I checked the permissions of the Google Photos app, and it does in fact have access to the SD card.
What gives?
I got my S7e a week ago and I have the same problem. Really annoying, especially as this was working fine on my previous phone Moto X Style. with an external SD card. Apparently the app does this by design, just wondering why was it working ok on my other phone and if there is a way to change this behaviour.
I have no problem with either the gallery app or google photo's accessing my EXSD card. It is either there are not the correct permission granted, or your EXSD card is not formatted correctly?
This was a brand new 32Gb microsd card I have formatted in the phone. Is yours FAT32 or extFAT? Did you format it in a PC?
You have to create a new folder in SD card (anywhere but under DCIM folder) and move the pics there manually. Google photos cannot access the pics under DCIM folder of SD card. Once the new folder has been created, allow that folder to be uploaded in Google photos app under Device folder.
I know its a pain to move the pics every time but that's how it is.

I'm only having issues when it comes to deleting pictures stored on external sd card from Google Photos. I'm trying to avoid the extra manual step involved when deleting files, not the end of the world.
I just can't explain why this worked without problems on my old Moto X Style but not on the S7 edge.
Hi, haing the same issue, did you find a solution?
This is by design. I believe the google photos app team said there is no way around this currently.
The way around it is granting g photos SD card access through one of the many available solutions for root users. One such solution is xinternalsd

Some of us use Android Pay and other such things that simply don't work when the phone is rooted. And as of the August security patch from Google .. it's just more chasing the dragon as far as keeping AP and root. Those of us with not enough time in the day don't want to keep chasing it. It just kinda sucks that Googles own photo app has this issue. I guess they have to adhere to their own rules.
