[Q] MT3G stuck on splash screen {RESOLVED} - myTouch 3G, Magic General

EDIT: Basically I was getting the errors because the phone had done the OTA update to FRG83D and the file I was trying to use to restore it was for FRG83B Here is the link to the second file for FRG83D http://android.clients.google.com/p...7ff5575808.signed-opal-ota-75603.687ff557.zip
Long story short, my son has this phone, I rooted it with a unoffical 2.2.1 rom that was running around a few weeks ago. While I was at work one day he downloaded the OTA which broke root and caused FC's on tons of stuff, couldn't even het to the home screen or into the menu. I rebooted into recovery, (which was not RA like I had put on it, now it was back to stock) did a data wipe as well as a wipe of cache, now it won't boot past the splash screen.
I can get into fastboot and stock recovery. Phone is recognized under fastboot, but not through adb. Can someone point me in the right direction, not new to android just the MT3G.....

You are in good shape...
Run this command and post the output!
Code:
fastboot getvar cid
Then we can determine which RUU to flash to get back to stock...
From there you can either update OTA, or root and flash whatever you want!

C:\Users\Owner>fastboot getvar cid
cid: T-MOB010Æ^á►
finished. total time: 0.002s
I don't think a ruu will work though, seeing as the phone will only connect to the computer in fastboot. I also tried the stock SAPPIMG.nbh and it doesn't get picked up in fastboot.

Type
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
Then you should be in RUU mode... now try to run the ruu and it should find your device!

EDIT: I tried a different RUU, and it went a little further, but ended up saying:
ERROR[156]: IMAGE ERROR
The ROM Update Utility cannot update your Android phone.
Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again.
ERROR[170]: USB CONNECTION ERROR in the ruu program
Fastboot screen does show "RUU USB"

check your pm

Looks like the hboot upgraded, but the rest isn't, and it won't let me downgrade because of the upgraded hboot. Soooo if anyone has the official 2.2.1 RUU for this phone please let me know!!

I'm in the exact predicament as the OP, good luck to solving this.

I think I fixed it, while looking around I found this post and flashed the file through stock recovery. I'm booted and setting up now.

I'm in a pretty similar predicament I flashed the new hboot then the 2.2.1 then tried out a new boot.img with the r.o secure=0 in build prop. Then i rebooted to recovery and it was stock? so I'm like f*ck. So I reboot the device and it's stuck at the green screen.
I've got the tmobile mytouch 32b with the latest hboot and recovery and no system.img

I think that's about the same situation I was in, try flashing the file above in stock recovery, don't see how it can do anymore damage. At least that's where I was at with the phone. I couldn't even use a goldcard to do anything, but this worked.

So I'm flashing the zip you posted right now and let me tell you when I saw it installing my I started sweating and now it's going to the android logo. It booted Thank you for the find

I tell you what messed me up is I used the wrong flash_image binary when I tried to flash the boot.img

Glad it worked! I spent about a day and a half dicking around with this thing, getting no where, then I found that and all troubles where gone in a matter of minutes.

Yeah this should be stickied. I'm a sprint hero user myself and although the phones are very similar it's got enough of a difference to screw you. So did you get that sigh of relief like I did. Mine comes mainly from the fact I know my girlfriend isn't gonna kill me or know about this.

LOL, yeah this is my kids phone and I was about to just buy a new one to shut him up and just mess with this when I had time. But yeah, I've done most of my stuff on the cdma Hero and now I've got the EVO. NEVER have I ran into a mess like this before.

just a note for people in the future use superoneclick to root and then clockwork mod ion/magic gsm for recovery

I used Superoneclick to root but in order to get the recovery to stick I had to remove /system/etc/install-recovery.sh from the rom.. then flash ra or clockwork

What if I don't have a stock recovery? I flashed another rom in hopes of avoiding the stock recovery reflash itself every boot-up. Unfortunately now I'm stuck with rebooting green screens with clockworkmod recovery.

From what I've read, I don't think this updated radio and spl will work with other ROM's yet. You could try flashing it in clockwork though. A couple of posts up I put the file you need to remove to avoid the stock recovery from reflashing itself everytime.

Help think I might have bricked my Magic(32A)

Hi,
I feel very bad asking but can you please help me with my Magic(32A) - Rogers.
Here is the story,
I bought the phone on ebay and the seller indicated that he rooted the phone before he sold me. So I thought okay as its rooted I can go to fast boot and just apply update.zip. So I did the below
1. switched off the phone
2. pressed home + power on and went to fast boot
3. did clean swipe
4. applied update.zip
It applied the custom rom(CyanogenMod 32a) and after that I am stuck on Roger's boot-up screen. So after this I removed my battery and I tried to going to fastboot and clicking Nandriod v2.1.1 restore and I get this error "E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblkop1". After that I did wipe and tried to apply restore but can "Error running nandriod restore. Restore not performed".
Can you please advise me of any options I have to restore my magic back.
Thanking you
FD
If you where not flashing the SPL you "should" still be ok if you can get into fastboot.
If you can just try to apply the ROM again, you might want to download another copy or different ROM (Hero maybe).
Clinton
do me a fav and power on holding down the vol down. see if you go into fastboot. if you do then you are not bricked. if so, see what your radio and spl is plus check if your (s) is off. if so you are rooted and you flashed the wrong board rom. if its on then your seller lied and you are not rooted. if so fallow the rooting guides that are posted here. if you need ne help just pm me and i will apply my skills the best i can. i want all to be rooted and experience the true right of freedom. lol. fosho. . . .
Partial hope
When I power it on and hold volume down I can get into fastboot mode and here is what I can see on the screen

Thank you rocking_mod I was able to restore my phone. Here is what I did
1. downloaded HoFo mod to renamed it to update.zip and copied it to SD card
2. used a recovery img and did a fast boot and loaded the img
3. after the reboot did a clean wipe
4. loaded the HoFo rom from the recovery mode.
And finally now the phone works again. Enough of action for one day.
Thanks again.

Congrats!
Always great to see when someone bring his mobile back to live
I'm guessing the ROM you downloaded was not compatible with your phone. As a side note, do NOT apply the Rogers update ontheir web site. It will upgrade your SPL to the dreaded perfect version.
I got the same error when I first apply the hofoion108.zip. I happened to press apply again somehow, and it had no errors at the second time. My phone can start with that rom later on.
I need help, i am in same situation as you freedonkey, but i don't know where to get the files you reffer to:
1. downloaded HoFo mod to renamed it to update.zip and copied it to SD card
2. used a recovery img and did a fast boot and loaded the img
3. after the reboot did a clean wipe
4. loaded the HoFo rom from the recovery mode.
The HoFo mod and which recovery image should i use and where to get it ?

ps: I am not sure, but i dont know what model is mine (i am kind of a newbie :/) i think it should be Rogers, but not sure, bought it in Portugal blocked to TMN phone company.
I also "soft-bricked" my Magic when installing a new ROM. I had wrong radio and didn't wipe before trying to install - all I was left was the HTC boot splash.
I was then, after a few days of reading & thinking, able to restore the device! I had bought it used so I had no warranty.
I used ADB to check out if the device was alive or dead. I wiped everything that was left (kernel, boot, system and userdata) and flashed new radio that would work with CM5/6. After that I flashed Amon_RA 1.71 Recovery, a 1.6 Donut ROM, gapps and new kernel. It worked! After that (for a month) I've been playing with CM6 nightlies and RC's.
If you don't want root capablities, just the original ROM, there should be good info on that. But if you do, I would recommend to follow CyanogenMod instructions from their wiki - they're helpful and easy to follow.

Hey again Kantii,
I am sorry i am bit newbie, I figure out my phone is still alive sthoughout ADB as u did, but i don't know for sure how to:
1- I wiped everything that was left (kernel, boot, system and userdata)
- I actuall wiped it after i turned the phone on with Home+off buton, does that inclued kernel and system wipe ?
2- flashed new radio that would work with CM5/6
- CM = Cyanogen Mod ??? which of these files u recomend to me ? (Both radio and CM5/6 ?)
3- I flashed Amon_RA 1.71 Recovery, a 1.6 Donut ROM, gapps and new kernel
- Is Amon_RA 1.71 Recovery compatible with any HTC MAgic ???
I am really newbie about all this so I would appreciate all details! :|
thanks a lot for everything so far anyway
Sorry for long time no reply! I had not checked my mailbox!
You should wipe them in fastboot:
1. Turn your phone on by pressing back + power until you are in fastboot & see the skating droids. Another method to do this is turning the phone on by pressing volume down + power and then the back key.
2. Connect the device to your pc (make sure you see FASTBOOT USB on the phone display) and run CMD
3. type "fastboot devices" and check if your phone is plugged in correctly and you see the device ID.
4. Now you can wipe them correctly with fastboot:
4.1 type "fastboot erase [system/cache/userdata/boot/kernel/recovery all separately]" (without brackets etc, they are here to make reading easier)
4.2 Download:radio http://www.theandroidkitchen.com/fi...es/?download=Radio_HTC_PVT_32A_3.22.20.17.img
SPL http://briancrook.ca/android/3.22/hboot-1.33.2005.img
recovery http://rapidshare.com/files/387932922/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H-cyan.img4.3. Move the downloaded files to C:\ (and if you want, rename to Radio.img and Hboot.img and Recovery.img) so it is easier to use them. After that type "cd.." in cmd repeatedly until you are in C:\
5. Now you should be able to flash the radio, SPL and recovery images:
5.1 Type "fastboot flash radio Radio.img"
5.2 Type "fastboot flash hboot Hboot.img"
5.3 Type "fastboot flash recovery Recovery.img"
5.4 In each step wait until fastboot says it has finished - if you won't, you have to start everything again or may brick your device.
6. Now in your phone press menu to power down it. Then boot again to fastboot to confirm you flashed correctly:SAPPHIRE PVT 32A ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.33.2005
RADIO-3.22.20.177. Now power down the device again and boot to recovery by pressing home + power.
7.1 In recovery, check that it works correctly (no lag, no crashes, functions work properly)
8. Now you can install CyanogenMod 6 and enjoy fast FroYo on your Magic
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Upgrading_from_CyanogenMod_4.2_to_CyanogenMod_5/6
Good luck and hopefully you can restore your device!

Not to thread hijack, but these instructions look well suited to my situation. At step 4.1 I get the error "FAILED (remote: not allow)". How to solve?
These instructions are only for Magic, but..
Post your fastboot details, please.
Hi my magic 32b is stuck on vodaphone splash screen.no fastbiot or recovery.but chargeable via usb and has blue light too.can u show me steps to softunbrick
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Sorry, but 32b is out of my area
Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755903
After that, test if you can get to fastboot or hboot (fastboot: back + power, hboot vol down + power). Then report back and search the forum for further help on restoring your device with new SPL & radio & recovery & ROM
Otherwise, if these won't work you could try JTAG.
Hope this helps,

[Q] MT3g Recovery Rom Update Failed (NO RECOVERY??)

Ok so i have a MT3g running Cyans 5.0.7 this is obviously a 32b. Unfortunatley i made the most retarded mistake of trying to flash a new recovery rom 1.7.0 from 1.2.6 and instead of booting in recovery i did it directly from adb shell on my pc while phone was booted on rom. It oddly didnt give me any error messages but when i tried booting in recovery i get the mytouch green logo screen and wont boot. There are no recovery logs tried both commands and i cant update my rom nor can i push the engineering spl because i was told u need to be in recovery for that? Is that it? Is this phones recovery done? What are my options? Thank You in advance!
Btw looked at other posts i promise this is not related.
Phone however does boot to my rom just not in recovery?

No recovery?

So I have been trying at putting a custom rom and partitioning the phone with LDXE or Ubuntu for about two days now. I have tried several different custom recovery.img files but I keep running into the same issue. I can't flash the recovery through fastboot because the phone isn't rooted. I cannot root the phone because the phone isn't rooted. This is because the rootme tutorials require that you flash the recovery before the phone is ever rooted. Now, whenever I goto the recovery screen I also get an exclamation point over a phone. I read in a few places that this is also a big issue but I couldn't find how to fix it.
So does anyone have any advice on rooting this HTC sapphire 32A?

No, you can't flash a recovery image via fastboot because you have a perfected/non-engineering SPL, but you'd need root flash this.
Could you post the information shown in fastboot and the information in Settings>about?

Can't downgrade MT4G?

Hi all, I am going to be as thorough as I can. I am rather new, and I'm stuck trying to downgrade my MT4G to froyo (PD15IMG). I have read the tutorials, and learned enough about adb to attempt this task, but I think by doing the HTC Bootloader unlocking update last week, it may be the reason I'm stuck. I follow the instructions on the tutorial, to gain temp root, until I get to the part where I should get a "#" in the command Window when I type "adb shell" but I keep getting "$" instead, although everything seems to be going ok until I get to that point.
*Also, I put the PD15IMG.zip on the root of my sd card, and start my phone in bootloader mode, and it finds the PD15IMG.zip, and a blue progress bar appears in the top right corner of my phone for about 90 seconds, it then displays "parsing PD15IMG.zip" then stops at the hboot screen and does nothing. I just select power down, then power on my phone and nothing will have been done to my phone. I guess what I need to know is, by doing the HTC bootloader unlock update (which I did before I read that it was a bad idea), can I still downgrade and root with normal methods, or will I have to do something different?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk
You can start differently. Since you've unlocked the bootloader, try to flash recovery directly, by downloading recovery image directly from Clockworkmod site, rebooting to FASTBOOT (adb reboot bootloader) and using the command "fastboot flash recovery your_just_downloaded_recovery.img".
If recovery flash doesn't work for you - download the 2.2.1 PD15IMG, unzip it, and flash the following 2 files from it:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot erase userdata
Then reboot. You should end up on 2.2.1, which is perm-rootable using the guide (Visionary for temp-root, gfree for S-OFF, and then perm-root if you want).
Then flash the recovery and the engineering bootloader.
Here is what I did, I am giving a link to pastebin as instructed, it seems to go perfectly until I try to flash the StockRom. In the meantime I will attempt what was just posted above^^^^^^^ http://pastebin.com/fYrC6tAZ
One last thing before i have to throw away my phone. I couldnt leave well enough alone. I did this "fastboot flash boot boot.img" as you stated in the post above. It was successful. I then entered this one "fastboot flash system system.img", and it failed (said the img was too big or something) so I did the "fastboot-windows reboot" command and it is now stuck on the white HTC MyTouch 4g splashscreen. Is my phone toast? My PC no longer recognizes that my phone is connected to the USB port, however I can hold the volume dwn & power button and it comes on in the hboot mode.Is there any hope?
Also, when I boot it up by vol/dwn & pwr, the Hboot screen comes up and finds the PD15IMG that is on my sd card, goes through a 1 minute or so process (a blue status bar loads in top right corner), then it just stays on the hboot. It did that before it stuck on the splash screen, but never actually wrote anything i dont beleive.
OK its letting me use FASTBOOT and here is exactly what I got when i tried to flash the 2nd file in your post above. It came from the PD15IMG.zip as you instructed:
C:\adb>fastboot flash system system.img
sending 'system' (571388 KB)... FAILED (remote: data length is too large)
finished. total time: 0.016s
Can someone please let me know if there is hope for my phone? I can communicate with it through Fastboot (on my PC) and it will boot up in hboot mode. But it WON'T go past the Tmobile/MyTouch splash screen. If I get it fixed, I promise to never touch it again until I study! I truly feel there is hope, but I think don't know enough to figure it out. I loaded the PD15IMG on my SD, and it attempts to flash it, (a blue status bar appears in top right corner and fills up in about 90 seconds), but afterwards, it still sticks on splashscreen. Is there anything I can do to fix it? Anything I can flash it with in Fastboot? Please anyone?
You mixed 2 ways, and did it completely wrong way. And you didn't attempt to flash the recovery at all.
The first part, that went well (till ./flashgc), already prepared your phone for downgrading, and you should have recognized and understood it. You don't need anything else, no flashes from bootloader or anything. All you needed was to continue - put PD15IMG.ZIP on the SD card, reboot into bootloader, and let it downgrade.
You can still do it, so please do.

Once you end up on 2.2.1, please follow the "Ultimate rooting guide" from Development section, and flash Engineering bootloader.

Thank for your response. I have tried doing the PD15IMG.zip by booting my phone in bootloader mode. It finds the PD15IMG.zip and then a blue progress bar appears in the top right corner of the phone, finishes in about 90 seconds, the a message appears that says "wrong zip file". I would be happy just to get my phone back on with the gingerbread 2.3.4 on it, and simply leave it alone until I know what Im doing. Is there a way to just flash the original s/w back on it? If so if you could tell me how I will not mess with it again until I study alot more. But flashing the PD15IMG doesnt appear to be working for me.
Download the file again, and check MD5SUM on it before you use it.
If it responds "wrong ZIP" - it's because the ZIP is corrupted. When you'll download a good ZIP, it'll work.

Ok you were right, the one I had the wrong MD5SUM, but i d/l the correct one, it had the correct MD5SUM, but it still gave me the "wrong zip file error". I feel like there is hope, but I cant figure this out!! Thank you for trying, is there anything else I can do? I also tried going into recovery and doing factory reset/ data wipe etc...but it continues to get stuck on the splash screen....
How did you copy the correct one to the phone's SD card, and where did you put it? You either didn't copy it to your SD card, or named it wrong, or put it in wrong location, not overwriting the older file.
In any case, if flashing PD15IMG fails for you:
Download CWM recovery from here:
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-glacier.img
Boot to bootloader.
Enter FASTBOOT.
Execute:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-glacier.img
Boot to recovery. You should have Clockworkmod.
Download a stock rooted 2.2.1 ROM from Development section.
Flash it in Clockworkmod recovery.
Extract boot.img from this ROM.
Flash it in fastboot, using "fastboot flash boot boot.img".
Boot into the ROM.
Proceed with gfree.
OK!! I got it fixed and it all makes sense to me now! I flashed the 2.2.1 boot.img to my phone, when it still had the 2.3.4 on it. It was as simple as that. I hadnt flashed the downgrade on it when I flashed the boot.img and I guess it was a mismatch. I read your last post to extract the "boot.img" from the rom and then it clicked! Yesterday I wrote the 2.2.1 boot img. to a phone that had 2.3.4...so I found a stock 2.3.4 rom, extracted the boot.img from it a BAM! its rolling again....thank you so much....
Yes, indeed, you flashed a mismatched, older kernel to your ROM. I was suggesting that you install custom recovery and change the ROM to match your boot.img, but the other way around also works - as long as you don't need to root your phone, that is.

Well I will soon attempt it again, however I think I need to read a little more so I can understand the concept of what I am doing. I learned a ton by making that mistake. But as soo as I got it fixed, I couldnt resist, I used revovery and flashed [ROM]:: ProjectMIUI 2.2.17 [R6]- UPDATED 2/21/12 - [Stable + Smooth from the DEV section and I have never been happier with my phones performance! I will soon try the cyanmod, but I want to chill with this rom for a week or so. Again, I appreciate your help, I learned alot.
As long as you don't mind flashing kernels separately using fastboot for each ROM you flash, you can go indefinitely and flash ROMs as much as you like with your current setup, not needing anything else. The only good reason for you to go for S-OFF would be to flash Engineering HBOOT, to be able to flash kernels from recovery directly, avoiding extra fastboot step.
Also, thanks for finally confirming that you can flash recovery using fastboot on HTC-Dev-unlocked device. There was one device that didn't allow it (I think Incredible S, but not sure), so it's good to know that on MT4G it works as it should.

[Q] trying to go back to original rom, but can't find any working method.

I'm looking for a way to get my phone back to a stock state, I don't care if it's unrooted in the process, I just want a fresh OTA capable stock rom. I have a couple PD15 images, and they flash in the boot loader, however, after trying to boot, it just stays stuck at the mytouch startup screen.
I'm looking at the tutorials found here, but none seem to be working. What exactly do I need to do?
Well do u still have a custom recovery or s-off
I have the completly stock rooted ROM 2.3.4 no ota after that
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 4G using xda premium
I'm using the PD15 images from here: https://www.4shared.com/folder/xDsyJF52/_online.html
I used the HTCDev unlock method. I have S-On
My issue is, is i want the official HTC kernel that comes with the latest stock rom. I cant find it to flash anywhere. So I'm trying to just go back to the regular rom, probably selling this phone soon anyway.
Son=T-Mobile
soff= the world
You can sell it for more with soff and rooted anyways the ROM I have has the stock kernel its completely stock just rooted

are yuo trying to flash a gingerbread stock or a froyo stock rom? which PD15IMG.zip files are you using? did you download the stock rom yourself and then rename it to PD15IMG.zip? are you sure your using the correct radio version .img as well? if all that is correct and youre still having trouble then you could try flashing the stock rom via fastboot mode
rename the rom to StockRom.zip (spelled exactly) then connect your phone in fastboot mode, then in the terminal enter fastboot oem rebootRUU it should then reboot into a black screen with a silver htc logo on it
make sure your StockRom.zip is in the same directory as your fastboot executable and run fastboot flash zip StockRom.zip
if it doesnt finish flashing or tells you to repeat the flash just re enter the command and it will work. then fastboot reboot.

I was doing all of the above, except checking the radio version and the fastboot oem rebootRUU! That could be it, thanks for that. I'll check it out and report back when I get some time.

I'm interested in your kernel that you are using actually, shoot me a PM or something if you feel like providing me links to download
So i tried the rebootRUU method, and still nothing (it says it works fine but will just hang at the white mytouch screen). I'm on HBOOT 0.89.0007 and RADIO 26.13.04.19_M
I'm trying to flash both the 2.3.4 before and the latest updated 2.3.4 stock rom.
Wish i could figure this out! Any ideas?
try to flash the stock froyo rom first.
http://d-h.st/ytv59wps2wzc heres a link to the PD15IMG.zip make sure the spelling is exactly like that all upper case except for the file extention .zip. and make sure its on the root of your sd card when you reboot into bootloader. the file shoild be about 312megs in size.
Tried, still stuck at the splash screen. I used HTCDev unlock originally with this phone, does that mean I also have to manually flash the boot.img from these zip's as well?
I'm obviously missing some step.
