Hspa+ speedtest issues - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm speed testing at my home and I usually get great speeds. But since yesterday when I start the speed test it will jump to 500k/bs and then bog down to 2g speeds? Is this tmobile limiting me? And when I ever I try to tether it will connect.and then disconnect.devices frequently... I just loaded the ICED ROM, and love it. But I dont think thats the issue. Please help me out guys.

Take a look at what Gattling had to say about this:
T-Mobile Speed Throttling in the G2 Forums

Hmmm, it does seem a bit odd that TMO/anyone would throttle bandwidth via a file stored on the device itself - as opposed to back at the host. I can't vouch for the functionality of the contents of that dir (data/system/throttle) though.
It just seems silly to manage at the client level, as opposed to server-side. Provisioning of this nature is usually managed at an account-level at the host.
A few things I've encountered in my time w/ TMO...
- At the beginning of the year, I was only getting about 800 kbps down and 200 kbps up. I called TMO and eventually got escalated up to someone that seemed to know what they were talking about. In the Orlando area, he felt I should've already been getting better speeds than that (and hinted at the eventual roll-out of HSPA+). Ultimately, nothing came out of the troubleshooting and my speeds remained as they were.
- I was given a free CliqXT back in April and noticed the same speeds (800/200). I called in and the first thing they had me do was swap my SIM card (and use the new one vs. the one I had with my G1). Things started to change for me at this point and I started seeing 1 mbps/500 kbps speeds.
- As months went on, our speeds eventually got better and better. Before our new MyTouch 4G's, we were getting 3 mbps-5mbps, depending on the time of day. I'll go grab my Speedtest.net log from my old CliqXT so you can see the gradual incline throughout 2010.
I'm now getting a steady 8-10 mbps down and 600-700 kbps up...

Exactly what I thought. I also wondered why they would rely on the handset to handle provisioning, considering the inevitable hacking that would take place. Then again, I can't determine the purpose of the throttle file either. The values make absolutely no sense to me. I'm testing with the closest server to Dallas (Provo, UT). The best speeds i've seen on my MT4G have been around 4mbps, that was by DFW Airport where the signal seems to be about as strong as it's going to get in the DFW Metroplex. I don't know what I'd do if I started seeing speeds of 8-10mbps... This is using my new SIM that came with the MT4G too.
***Now the Texas servers are showing up, still same results though***

The area i live in does not have 4g but 3g. So i am getting speeds of 300 to 500 kbps download. On 3g i should be getting better speeds than this. Tech support said these speeds i preety good for 3g. My old att phone gets better speeds than this on edge.

We're lucky where I live...mobile speed test says: 4325kb/s...not the worst ever...lolol...and I get about that when I speed test while tethered...

What speed test utility do you use when you're tethered? mobilespeedtest.com is known to give wildly inaccurate (sometimes even impossible) results..
Hello Everyone,
I find if I use Opera Browser for www.mobilespeedtest.com I get realistic results.
If I use IE browser, I get some very unrealistic results.
Also, Read My Thread Here, I think we are being throttled but T-Mobile's network limiting the RWIN.
Even run the TCP/IP Analyzer yourself.
Thank you,

700-800kbps pretty much always (but i'm in the middle of nowhere so I'm not surprised)
230 kbps in dallas TX. Every time i call them they say there's a outage i sip code blah blah blah. When i tell them im no using those towers they say well its the entire city....And there script is "we don't guarantee high speed internet as long as your able to connect" On my Nexus one i got 500kbs all the time...I don't know what to say but lease sprint hurry with EVO
600-700 kpbs depending where I'm at
HA you guys are all lucky im in CT and get 200kbs and max of like 230 lmao! horrible!

I have never got it that fast in a mobile in Brazil before, very pleased.
Connected to PC as modem, I get from 1000 to 4500, but this is a problem from TIM, I don't know why but they cannot limit my connection when connected to PC, normally it should be limited at 1Mbit for my plan.

mine is waaaaaay faster at night than it is during the daytime. like 10x faster. in the daytime i linger around 100-200k at night i am upwards of 1200k

Sam here in fairfield county, CT. Im getting 126kbps in opera mobile...even though I have an 'H' icon on the task bar! PIE gives me unrealistic results, which never translates into real world usage speeds. im gonna be so jealous when the Evo 4G drops for sprint. Ive always gotten upwards of 2 or 3MB in my area with sprint's 3G service. I love my HD2, but tmobile's crappy, unstable data speeds, kinda brings down the excitement a few notices.
Is anyone trying to use the hd2 w/ the flex pay internet plan?
I'm paying $10 a month for unlimited internet. It worked fine on my unlocked iphone 3gs.

Ok cool, thanks...I just thought you were saying you had used speedtest.net, and I just cringe whenever I hear anybody referring to test results from there. Sometimes they're spot on, but sometimes they're flat out rediculous, and the results are all over the place...enough so for me to not be willing to guess which ones can be believed and which can't

Incredible 4G Speeds after Netarchy's rooted final OTA

Ok, so I've been getting pretty good speeds with my 4G before the OTA update, around 7-8ish Mbps. This is all taken from the same place, inside my house.
After the OTA, I tried some 4G, and I was SHOCKED!

Edit: Just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating and it wasn't a fluke, I ran several more tests, the lowest score being just over 9Mbps. I'm thinking that either Sprint just flipped the "real" 4G switch, or somehow I got unthrottled 4G.
you suck.. lol
my best has been like 4Mbps.
that is with the Rooted leak though...
Niice, what kind of latency are you seeing?
I am also getting very good speeds, around 6mbps consistently while I could only get about 4mbps before in the same spot.
I'm kindof wanting to update to the 2.2 final roo just for that. I'm currently on BakedSnack 1.0
...hmm..
Really the only thing keeping me on this ROM is the sexy theme.
I just installed the OTA 2.2 update and have noticed a huge increase in 4G speed also.
I used to cap out at 5.5Mbps averaging 4. Now I cap out at 10.5 averaging 6-8.
This is a completely stock non rooted EVO.

Well, I'm not gonna go THAT far, I needs mah root! haha. I'm totally going to update now though, my battery lasts a good amount with 4G on all day. and I want it to go faster!
My speeds increased too. In King of Prussia, PA I maxed out at 4 Mbps. Now I max out at 7Mbps. I'm so angry that the Lehigh Valley doesn't have WiMax yet. That's where I live
Same story here. My previous high would be in the 4 - 5 Mbps range. Last night I pulled down 8.3 Mbps. I've had the same positive results regardless of what kernel I've been running, so I would have to think this is a result of the new wimax radio.
Can you keep the speed during actual usage?
Can you keep the speed during actual usage?
I'm on 'leaked' now and speed is the same as on .47 (around 6) but say on usb tethered and skype my real transfer is super low (very low quality picture). It was perfect on 2.1.
So is it just short 'high peak' to look cool on test? Any thoughts?
Im using FreshEvo 3.1 and I also saw better speeds (previous peak was 3-4, now pulling 8-9). If I remember correctly from reading a previous post about speeds, the more activity the faster your connection should be. I'm gonna be optimistic and say they DID turn on the real 4g switch along with the new updated wimax.
My speeds have gone way up too.I'm running Fresh 3.0.3w/the stock kernel.I'm actually pretty impressed.I live in upstate NY and figured when I got the phone I probably wouldnt see any 4g coverage for a year or so
We should tip this thread to Engadget if we get more confirmation

Why does everyone say this??? I watched my net usage in System Panel while I was doing my test and it's near spot on. It doesn't take your peak speed, but averages it.
I'm not trying to insult anybody. If there's something I'm missing on why the speedtest.net app isn't worth it, please enlighten me.
I don't really get it either, I'm out of 4g coverage atm but just ran some 3g tests using speakeasy and the numbers are about the same as what I've been getting from speedtest.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I used the speakeasy link here, which got the highest numbers for me at about 10.5-11Mbps depending on which server I chose.
I also use the Speedtest.net app and now get 6000 where I used to get 3500 - 4400.
Also tested using Xtremelabs speedtest app, am getting 6.5-9Mpbs now where I used to get 3.5-4.5.

HSPA+ Improvement

I know that the Atrix will not be compatible with AT&T LTE. When comparing Verizon's LTE with ATT's HSPA+, Verizon blows it out of the water. While I know that HSPA+ will never be as fast as LTE, does anyone know if there are plans to improve the speed of HSPA+ on ATT? I think it's able to perform speeds of 14 mpbs but the reports I have seen actually put it at 2-4 mbps.
Thanks,
Matt

They could very easily increase our speed, but the real question is "will they?".
It might be they are going to keep HSPA+ where it is because the network won't handle the volume of traffic, or might be because they want people to jump on LTE when they start that, (enthusiasts buying new LTE phones so they can utilize the faster speeds). in reality, we don't know, but can hope!
AT&T is slowly improving backhaul from what I hear. This should increase it pretty significantly, as T-Mobile is making similar improvements and seeing speeds in the 5+ mbps range. The most I've seen is 4.7 Mbps on my Atrix (up from 1.5 on my old Aria), so I know that the phone is capable of pretty significant speeds. The HSPA+ 14.4 radio on the Atrix is likely to top out at around 7-10 mbps once all the network improvements have been finished.
Most of the towers are fast enough already but they get bogged down easily by many more people using it than it can handle, when they increase bandwidth you'll see improvements

Speedtest, pretty much the standard we all use:
Speedtest Mobile
If you use it, make sure to check settings and select the server closest to you. Speedtest can have a habit of picking a very distant server for you. Also, it sometimes pays to try different servers, as speed results will vary depending on the server and who runs it.

Just as a recommendation, if you get consistently varied results on the Speedtest app you can try different servers but also try http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/. It seems to give me far more consistent results, but I'm not sure about anyone else. The desktop page should load fine with that strong Flash support!
Yup, Speakeasy is another good one!

You must not like iPhones... Sprint's 3G speeds have been getting progressively worse over the past year and I'd say it probably due to free smartphone promos (e.g., free Evos through Radio Shack--I know three people that got them for free) than iPhones. Sprint knows about it and is doing something about it. I don't remember where I read the article (I just googled it and unfortunately couldn't find it) where it states that Sprint is improving their infrastructure. I flashed back to Froyo because I thought that might be the problem and my speeds did increase for a while and then dropped back. Just be patient.

Here's my "normal" speeds... I was getting faster speeds on dial-up back in 1995. This has happened in my area since last November. Before that, I could easily pull 2mbps all day and all night.
Everyone else with this problem, do your speeds increase late night/early morning? Between about 2am and 6am, I can pull about 1.3mbps, but during the day or any other time, I can NEVER get above 100kbps. Obviously this shows that the towers are just overloaded, and not broken, as Sprint keeps claiming.

Sorry to hear you are having 3G issues. My 3G shot up about a month ago from about 0.3m to more than 1.0m. I have never had anything below 0.1m unless I was roaming on Verizon. Now I'm pretty much above 1.0m with occasional slow downs, but still over 0.3m when slow.

Typical <1Mbs. Upload speeds are usually faster than download.
I have had crapy 3G speeds ever since I switched to the hero just after it came out. Before that with my touch pro I would get 1.5 Mbps easy all day and night.

No matter the time of day, .40 Mbps is "typical" for download, .20Mbps for upload. That's on good days. I'm aware of all the factors that affect speeds, I just felt the need to vent about it for once.
I live on an island in the puget sound in washington state and 3G reception here is horrid. And that's after they've made some upgrades to our towers. I really don't understand why our service isn't better considering I live within miles of a major navy installation (Whidbey NAS).
Been on Sprint's Everything Data plan since August 2010 with my EVO 4G, which also requires the additional $10 charge for 4G capabilities (the nearest place I get 4G reception is over 30 miles away). I feel like I'm really having it stuck to me in the pocketbook.
If I don't have WiFi reception wherever I'm at, I typically wont even bother with 3G unless I have to. I'm more likely to just leave it off to save battery life.
Okay I'm done ranting, thanks for listening.

I had almost decided to move on to another carrier for the same reason. I looked at www.network.sprint.com and it showed a data speed upgrade withing 6 months. Didn't know if they would come through but they did 2 days ago. Now is decent.
Btw...check that site. For weeks my data was crippled worse than it use to. Maybe because they were working on it I guess....but now is good. I guess patience is key.
......or a booster.

Site doesn't work.

Same here.
I don't think you are the only one. I came to this forum today to see if anyone else was having this issue. I'm also in Washington (Bellevue) and I used to get about 1,000 kbps and decent reception. Lately I'm lucky if I have 1 bar of 1x speed. My speeds are just as bad as yours. How is your signal strength?

I swear I must have the worst 3G performance known to man..
