odin between roms - Vibrant General

i've seen quite a few people say/recommend using odin to go back to stock before flashing a (new) rom. i see no merit to this since all the roms we have for the vibrant wipe and most of us are going to titanium backup (restore) apps and maybe a couple system options anyway.
so i'm curious if there is reasonable justification for this behavior or if some people are just being overly cautious/paranoid. in my experience, i've flashed my vibrant at least 15 times and have never used odin. and my phone works great.

It just gives the phone an absolute clean slate. Sometimes (so i heard/read), it might leave ghostings of the previous ROMs when flashing a brand new one.

I just flashed a ROM and it showed 0 bytes free for application storage. I used ODIN and then flashed again and it showed 1.9 gb free. So yes, using ODIN does reset something that a simple wipe does not do.

i flashed axura a couple hours ago, and after restoring my apps using titanium i have 1.44gb app storage and have never had a problem similar to that. what rom did you flash and what were you on before? did you try reflashing or flashing a different rom before using odin?
edit: just read your post in the dev thread regarding flashing and seeing 0bytes free in app space and it sounds like it's a known issue with that rom....

0B phone storage, first time set up on every boot?

Well, I was fine up until last night when I went to flash back to a old backup I had after not being pleased with what I had downloaded. That somehow brought me to some odd stock rom, I have no idea how really but I had lost vibration and these issues started. I then used Odin's stock file stock files to get back to what should be stock, but I'm not having both of these problems. Every time my phone boots it runs though the first time setup regardless if I follow though the whole thing or not. I also can not install anything like Rom Manager because my phone has no storage left. My SD card was also formatted at some point while I tried to fix all these issues last night.
At this point I have no idea how to proceed. I've tried rooting and I just get a failed message after my reboot. I'm stuck at this point.
Is this a development question? There are many threads about this issue. Search: use it

I believe at this point that is what my problem is. WHen I try to get into CWM I don't have update.zip on my sdcard any more.

Thanks for that; I'm working my way though those steps now. I believe I should be rooted well enough soon.
I do not know, however, how I'm suppose to install CWM, or "4. Use cwm to restore the stock.zip (kernel)." and "7. Apply CWM. Wipe data." to remove voodoo.
Also after running the one click root in that thread it ends with several errors and I do not see superuser as an app on my phone, making me assume it didn't work.

Is my phone near death?

I've been flashing this thing left and right since November (when I got it, teehee). It's been through over 10 Odins and 100 custom rom/kernel flashes. Even so, Odin has never failed me, nor has the ROMs. But lately, my phone has been freezing non stop, I thought I flashed Syndicate Frozen wrong so I reflashed after wiping and it still froze. I changed the kernel prefixes to 1000/200 instead of 1000/100 to see if it's the 100 scale being stupid, but no dice. I decided to flash MidNIGHT rom to see if that would fix the problem and it worked fine, but now another problem arose. My recovery can't find internal or SD storage anymore...I fixed the problem before by booting the phone up, then going into settings > Privacy > factory reset (although that froze the phone and I had to manually pull the battery) but once I rebooted, all was good...but I Odined back to DI18, automatically updated to EC05, then ran the EXT 4 one click root and it was fine, then I flashed Syndicate 1.1 again, froze on me, restored my working version of midNIGHT rom, now it's giving me that internal storage problem again in recovery.
Is my phone about to die??? I took a picture of the recovery error with my brother's phone.
Those aren't big-deal errors - but I've seen them before when I flashed CWM3 and entered it early (I can't tell you exactly what I did). Just Odin again, flash CWM3, let it convert, and restore the backup. You should be fine. But no, your phone is fine.
And, see the SRF thread. The freeze fix has been posted many times.
Perhaps you should try something other than Syndicate for a while...maybe try an RFS based ROM. Sounds like all your problems start with flashing Syndicate.
Stock EC05 RFS with Genocide 0.5a kernel has been rock solid for me and unbelievable battery life.
I'll give it a try, thanks!
I get those same errors when I use reboot recovery to get to CWM3, but when i use the 3 finger method it works fine.
What method did you use to boot to cwm?

Quick boot is a hard reset. Cause of this it causes data corruption. Use the reboot option built into the rom.
If you wanna reboot into recovery after hitting the reboot 3 finger death grip. It will reboot into recovery

Not only that, but something just doesn't set right when you do it - I can't tell you exactly what, but that's definitely the cause right there.
Had both of these same issues as well on SFR 1.1 and also thought my phone was in trouble. Quickboot caused problems in CWM3 and data corruptions, so had to wipe and reflash. Then, like a number of others, I started having the freezing problems on SFR. Unfortunately, hadn't made it through all the pages of issues in the thread (and freezing issue wasn't yet noted in 2nd post when I downloaded the rom), so ended having to do several battery pulls, which caused more data corruption that required wiping and formatting sd card. Since the posted fix is to flash a kernel that is said to break the camcorder, which I use, I decided to flash back to midnight and all is working again.
I don't want this post to be seen as me knocking SFR. The team at ACS does great work and I'm sure the kernel works for most users. Once the freezing issue is resolved, I'll probably try SFR again, because I like their roms. Just wanted to let you know others are having the same issues.

I'd totally use that fix if my camera worked with it. :S
any kind of quick reset (quickboot or pulling battery with power on) is bad news on a non-journaled ROM.

midNIGHT rom came with Quickboot.apk, so I assumed it's okay. I'll ditch it right away, though.
not meaning to hijack the thread butttt
is adb reboot acceptable to use on a non journal rom?

Starting from scratch.

Ok folks,
I'm having a hell of a time with my phone.
No matter what rom I flash, seems to have issues from lockups to reboot.
I have tried every kind of wipe in CWM, inluding making sure I have the latest version of CWM and modem, same.
Is there a way to TOTALLY wipe everything on the phone and go back to true factory default, even as far as the phone number programming? Like it was when it came from Splint?
(Yes, I'd then want to unlock with Odin and put a new ROM).
Thanks much!

Yes it will put the phone back to when you took it out of the box..I think he means that if you have any files that you downloaded to the internal storage ie pics, music, contacts things like that they won't be touched.
Just download the Odin file and the Sprint file which is the stock software the phone came with and use is procedure.
Just to worn you The Sprint file is large and will take awhile to download to your comp
Get the full mf9 tar.md5. Remove sd card. Flash with pc Odin. After phone boots up to home screen and settles down, don't set up anything. Go into settings, accounts, backup, then do full factory reset with wipe of internal storage. After it reboots and settles down again, you're completely back to stock. No need to wipe your phone number and associated settings. If it were me, I'd stay away from custom roms if they're giving you nothing but problems.

So if you are on MF9 good luck with going back to stock everything. Because the methods mentioned above don't get rid of the MF9 Firmware just the Build. Also You have use triangle away which only works on MDC and MDL to get to fully clean stock. Everything mentioned in this thread will not do what you want if you are wanting it out of the box like new condition.

[Q] STRANGEST ROM Flashing Symptoms and Issues. CALLING Flash, Recovery, EXPERTS!!!

Dear Friends,
I just bought a Sprint S4, and despite my half a decade experience of flashing custom ROMs and such, I seem to run into a whole lot of issues with this phone that I cannot solve or get past.
So some background first, on what's happened and been done to the phone:
1. Bought the phone (don't recall the original firmware), but Rooted it via the QBKing method.
2. Flashed TWRP 6.1 something from the GooManager
3. Have a Class 10 SD 64Gig SD Card that I formatted via S4, so I assume it's in the ExFat format?
4. Downloaded Sacs, put the ZIP on the SD
5. Booted into TWRP, Wiped, Data, Dalvik, Cache, and System
6. Tried Flashing Sacs ZIP from SD, Errored out: Something like: Flash failed, unable to read the Zip file. And some verbiage for Partition
7. I can't Mount my SD or INTERNAL via Recovery. Can read them from the Recovery file Manager, but nothing shows up on the computer, unrecognized drivers (worked fine for the same phone, later, when it was on, so I know it was the drivers that was the issue)
8. Ran straight for Odin after that, but after trying SEVERAL TARs and etc, the phone would NOT begin flashing with Odin even :'(! (Could still enter Download Mode)
9. After HOURS of trying VARIOUS Odin versions and TARs, I found a One-Click EXE with Odin Packaged with the MDC Rooted firmware this FINALLY brought the phone back to life!!
Now the issues remaining that I need your expert help and advice on:
1. Since the phone coming back to life, I went STRAIGHT for Sacs ROM again! MD5 checked it, everything looked good. Put it both on SD and Internal.
2. Made Backups of the MDC ROM
3. Tried Flashing and ran into the similar error that you saw in Step 6 from the Backgroun
4. Downloaded Stock, DeOdexed MF9 ZIP, downgraded TWRP to a stable version, and tried Flashing again and Step 6 repeated. Tried VARIOUS ROMs this way, same issue. Error flashing, something about Partition, and Couldn't read Zip. All these Zips were MD5 Sum CHECKED!
5. The lack of mounting issue as USB drives from Recovery continues
6. Then a FREAK discovery was, when the ZIP failure occurred, I opted for Flash Dalvik and Cache and tried Installing right after that, and BOOM! Sacs starts Flashing !!!
7. I broke Sacs quick, restoring things from Titanium Backup, and when I tried restoring my latest MDC Backup, it recovered with a black screen and bootloops, and NO recovery entry AGAIN :'(!! (I think I may have backed up Recovery with that Nandroid and restored)
8. So I repeated the One-Click again, the phone restored again... this time in FACTORY MODE :-/?? I ignored, and restored to an older MDC backup, which worked!
9. I downloaded TriForce MF9, this time, tried flashing and failure again with Failed Flashing, error reading Zip. And on and on it goes :'(! I can't run Odins with MF9, I can't flash ROMs, I can't mount my INTERNAL AND SD in Recovery and am just straight bummed :'(!!
I have a few hunches:
- Format SD Card as Fat32, using this one app. But I think you lose 32 gig space from your card, right? Also, why doesn't Internal storage mount from Recovery :-/?
- Maybe a I just have bad or corrupted sectors in my Internal AND External storage devices?
In either case, please treat me as a NOOB, and chime in with your thoughts and experience on what you think could be happening? I appreciate ALL your help in advance, thanks for your time !
I would try a new recovery, I have always had problems with the newer TWRPs, I recommend 2.5.0.2 or CWM
^ that, and do you have to update to mf9 before flashing an mf9 rom? That might be helpful. Are you just dirty flashing rom over rom in your attempts, that could be an issue. Wiping and factory resetting before flashing the Rom may help.
Just tossing out random ideas.
Edit: just realized I missed #5 in the first half. Sorry, and missed the stock deodexed part lol.

I just ran into a bunch of problems. Man.. You need to be careful what you flash. Not everything is on the up and up. Steer clear of this website and their firmware. ------> http://galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-stock-firmware/ Unless you are intrigued by complex remote spyware. You'll be amazed with the phoney updates that inject things like a note 3 keyboard, Android device manager, and a bogus samsung hub. All of which will show AT THE BOTTOM, NOT THE TOP of your google play "all" list as installed apps.... but not in your installed apps list. They show as installed, but incompatible with your device. Go figure. Somebody had complete control of my device. It took me a minute to figure it out. Then finding a legit source of firmware here. ----->http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SPH-L720 I was able to get legit again. But not after encountering the problems you are having. I had to go in and manually delete a few partitions that did not belong and stayed after flashing anything. Once I did that... I flashed the MF9 firmware from samsung.updates.com (the second site I just listed above) and everything is legit now. No phoney updates. No bogus apps. Everything is perfect just like it came when I took it out of the box. Beware.... MANY of these ROM's have b.s. injected into them, and so do some of the firmwares. Take caution bro. I'd be happy to answer any questions if there are any.

Issues with Omega ROM v29 (GT-I9500)

I'm just going to jump straight into it, I've been having some annoying issues with my phone after flashing the Omega ROM. The main issues I have are the extremely slow boot times and storage issues.
Whenever I bootup the phone, it takes a very long time to bootup, longer than the stock ROM. Takes about 4 minutes. Occasionally, it will say "Android is upgrading" or something along the lines of that. I flashed this mod so it would be faster, not slower.
The issue is storage. Prior to flashing, I used 13 GB/16GB of internal storage. I backed up my phone but all those back ups are on my PC. I apparently have less than 400 MB on my phone now, even though I deselected every Omega app and Samsung bloatware with the Aroma installer. Even worse is that some apps that were able to be moved the SD card are no longer able to do that.
