Hi XDA,
I've received my DHD yesterday and not impressed at all by now.
The camcorder records @ only 21 frames per second on 720p.
Is that quite the common for the DHD? I thought 30fps were usual!?!
Is there any fix for that low FPS? AND also some regular camera improvements?
fat32 and 32kb formated! both sd class2 and class6.
Best Regards
Wowa Trader
In the settings, try to set the Brightness to -2 to get few more fps
Although there is probably something wrong in your case, cause every video I've seen from the DHD is very fluid, you could try to set ISO to the maximum value(I think 800) when in photo mode(option does not appear in video mode).Else, you could lower the resolution(800x480 is juuuuust fine, believe me).
Bear in mind that there could be something wrong with your phone.I certainly hope that's not the case though!
With kind regards

hi
I just was testing desire the hd camcorder. I recorded a video for approx 3 mins.
Whilst playing the video, it has lags and stutters which i know is not normal. Previous hd2 ran smoothly and it never had this problem. HD2 was 5MP and desire HD has 8MP, but I dont think the camera quality is as good as the hd2.
Is there a way to fix this frame skipping/lagging issue?
Has anyone else had this problem, can any1 shed any light on this?
Thanks in advance.

The HD2 records video at 800x480,while the Desire HD at 1280x720.If you do the math it's 384000 vs 921600 pixels, which is 2.4 times as many pixels.Try recording at 800x480.Its quality is as good on the phone's screen.

Hi tolis626
Thanks for the reply. Yes I did the maths, hence was concerned about the rec quality. Now I will try 800x480 and see how the quality is now.
What about the video stuttering/lagging when played?
Many Thank again

You're welcome. And btw sorry, but I didn't try to make myself look smarter!I just noticed that it just looks that way, like sarcasm or something!Again I'm sorry!
Anyway,I don't have my DHD yet(damn...),but I stumbled across these things with my Desire.Stuttering\lag has to do with the SD card you use.The provided class 2 card will most probably have trouble recording video at these bitrates. That's what happened with the Desire;Once I bought a Kingston 16Gb class 10 card(kinda expensive though...) all the stuttering was gone(or up to a large degree).Try that along with the maximum ISO(although if possible don't use the latter as it produces much noise) and I think that video is gonna be butter smooth!
How often do you experience that lagging? My did plays its recorded 720p videos quite well. Yes there is some shuttering occasionally, but its not that bad.
Why don't you try formating your sd card with 32kb clusters?

I just did a small test.
When you film something that is dark, and requires the phone to change the ISO, the FPS will drop dramatically. Only in bright light it films @ 30 FPS.
I guess it could be bad coding, so I really hope they can fix it through an update.

i think it's normal that when you film something darker, the FPS drops, all things being equal..the phone does need to slow down the FPS to gather more light to the sensor. I think the phone will also up the ISO but there is a limit to how much the ISO can increase without the video looking too grainy.
The sensor that HTC used for the camera could be a lower end type so that's why it has to compensate by dropping frames. If they used a better sensor with higher ISO capability, it could up the ISO a lot more and yet maintain the brightness of the video and also the FPS.
I have switched my SGS for DHD , such a bad move! On sgs video recording at 720p is 20X better than 480p on DHD in terms of fps, ghosting, colors, image stabilization and fluidity... Just one of my many bad choices lately...

Hi XmUrF
Thanks for reply. That lagging happens approx after 30 secs when playing. 1. Does the class of the microsd matter? 2. Also does the space left on the microsd matter? 3. Can you tweak camera settings to make better?
On the htc hd2 the was no occassional stuttering. that was fluent, even tweaked it to be 8mp and pics were perfect no probz.
4. What does 32kb clusters formatting method mean and do?
Wow 20fps????!
So far i've never got more than 12fps, mostly less.
I also get the stutter approx every 2 mins.
Lastly has anyone made a 720p recording longer than 15 minutes? If i do, when i stop the recording the screen goes grey and the cam wont work until i restart the phone. Any recording saved will then not play. Sigh.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
it records 29fps in daylight drops down with indoor lowlight and down to 10fps in darkness, stutter issue is random sometimes it happens sometimes it never happens most likely related to multitasking or auto white balance
most of my outdoor recored vids are 29fps even at sunset it managed 29fps
as always if u want beautiful quality for both videos and shots, drop sharpness to -2 to kill the digital treatment

When recording video with Cupcake, what framerate are people getting for their videos? You do get the framerate by going to Gallery. Long click on the video and select info. I'm only seeing 4-9 frame/sec. I think it's because my memory card is class 6. Thanks.
I've seen frame rates range from 19fps to 4fps. I've found that videos of well lit areas or outdoors produce higher frame rates.
I got 19 fps (outdoor shot)
/Mats
The brighter it is, the shorter the required exposure and therefore the higher the framerate that is possible. If its so dark that you need a 2 second exposure, you'll only get at best 1/2 fps.
Does anyone know of the ISO sensitivity of the camera is adjustable? If someone could figure that out, I bet the still camera AND video recording would be faster. I've seen the ISO adjust a little, but not much.
Max frame rate is locked at 20. A note in the source says anything higher and it becomes unstable.
but why? the cpu can handle up to 8mpix still and 30fps recording video afaik oO
The framerate I'm usually ok with, it's not great but usually 15+ which is decent. The resolution (CIF, 352x288) and video quality (super compressed mp4/H.263) blows chunks though. Absolutely horrible and a disgrace for a smartphone in 2009, it's as bad as my three year old Samsung U600 dumbphone. A two year old Nokia N82 can at least shoot video at VGA resolution and use less video compression, at up to 30 FPS, despite a much slower processor. I can't express how disappointed I am. Is the camera and/or hardware in the Dream really that bad or is this a software thing?
In other words, this is merely a software incapability, not a hardware issue. Meaning, I'm sure one day we will be able to see significantly increased video quality and so forth.
Evo 4G
iPhone 4
Any developers out there can figure out what the hell is going on? Lol. I know the iPhone is capable, but what's holding the Evo 4G back? Hardware? I mean I hope it's not for such a technical beast. Software? Lens? Ugh.
Considering the gs out performs the evo this isn't a big surprise.
It's probably a few reasons, first being the device relies on a slow sd card (out of the box) vs fast internal memory. Meaning they had to be careful with file size and how much data got pushed from the camera to the card. better sensor, better lens, less compression etc.. The Evo also records in a ****ty codec

Software. Also note that the iPhone does technically record 20+ fps video, it is doubling frames, so a lot of the time its only actually capturing 15-20fps and then doubling some of the frames. Once we get full kernel source, we can overclock the camera chip the same way we kinda did for the Nexus and improve the bitrate, audio quality, and video fps. See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=698287
I read somewhere that HTC was doing a huge amount of compressing of the video that is recorded. It has to be something like that in my opinion.
The iphone 4 has a back-lit camera sensor. That is likely helping a lot for this indoor video. I have also read that the evo4g compresses video a lot.
Dam, makes the Evo look like sh1t lol.

The Evo also has a backlit sensor. Look up the Omnivision OV8810 if you wan't more info on it, its the same sensor used in the Incredible. The only difference is since the iPhone is only a 5mp sensor, the pixels are ever so slightly larger, which will help with low light performance a little, but not drastically on these sensors. Its mostly software, since both of these sensors are so similar being backlit and whatnot

Look at the codecs... iPhone4 is h264 (10) (what we think of as mp4 on desktop) and EVO is H264 (2) which is horribly low bitrate, thus the blockyness.
Hopefully Geniusdog254 is right and we can pull a bit better fps out of it, but I don't think we're going to be able to do much about the low light abilities, the iphone4 has a better sensor and optics.
I didn't realize htc had a backlit sensor. Good. Hopefully they can get their software to be worthy of it.
NM, said above.
Not to change the subject, but how are these YouTube videos playing inside the evo browser? Usually clicking on them opens HTC flash player.
Easy - bitrate..
we need to figure out how to increase the video recording bitrate.. They've done this on the nexus one - so perhaps the same trick would work here?

That's one thing that sourly lacking in the HTC recording app.

HTC's response:
Thank you for your reply. I researched into this further. The Auto-Focus option is only for the initial focus of the image on the screen. There is not a setting on the device for continuous focus.
In regards to the quality of the video, there are many factors that come into play when creating a video. Movement, lighting, and focus are all a part of the quality. Since the device does not have a form of continuous focus, then your queslity is not going to be as good as a device with this focus feature.
The devices also uses 2MB/s transfer rate to the SD card. This is not dependant on what type of SD card you have in the phone. Higher class cards indicate the Minimum data transfer rates to and from the card itself. Unfortuantely, this cannot be adjusted using native settings on the device. I do apologize for any inconvenience that you may have experienced.

So, is he saying that no matter what SD card speed we have, HTC caps the data transfer to 2mb/s?

Is there a way to just disable the video camera completely, because with that type of quality, if I ever did record something by accident, I'd have to kill myself.
On a "meh" note, the h.264 800x480 recording is very smooth and looks pretty good.
Not 720p, which still is pretty much what it was before, but at least it's something.
Really guys? I think it looks pretty decent. It's still no iPhone 4, but when he gets outside it definitely looks a bit smoother than it did before, and detail is a bit better as well. I remember before it would look like the camera had trouble even recording in 720 and would hiccup every few seconds. It may only be 24fps, but at least it's a CONSISTENT 24fps. don't forget every movie you've ever seen was filmed at 24fps... And yea, the indoor portion kinda sucked but that's due to the crap sensor they put in the evo.
while not recording the actual image on the screen looks a little smoother, but to my eyes it seems when you record its actually worst then before
audio is sooooooooooooooooooooo much better

What are you talking about? It's using an 8 megapixel version of the EXACT same sensor they used in the iPhone 4 by the SAME manufacturer, and unlike most camera sensors in smartphones today, it's actually backlit. Please stop blaming the hardware before recognizing the real root of the problem.

Ya, but pro cameras don't drop frame rates in low light.
I've seen my EVO drop to 8-12 FPS while recording in low light. Almost impossible to watch.

720p turns out too bad for me with lots of drop-frames, even with a class-4 card...so prefer the WVGA as of now...still hunting around for a high-speed card though!
720p goes nicely for me...no frame drops, class 6 card
Try clearing memory, full, with a taskmanager. Some things wont work anymore but 720p recording works great. Looks like a to much aps running on the background causes this problem.. After that, restart your phone and sort out your unnecessary (crap) widgets and aps running on the background.
Also lighting is very important.
OT: I only record 720p.
I prefer 720p, too.
I have a 16GB class4 card in it (read somewhere the phone can't use more than class 4, means that the phone isn't faster with a class6 card). I get 23 fps and you?

lowest i've seen is 20 while my hand is almost still but while running it can drop to 16, still it doesn't look as jerky, appears smoothe, and the max i've seen while my hand was still was 26 fps
I prefer fwvga, the capacity is reasonable and the frame rate is better. The HD quality is too much for me, frame rate is not desirable, 11minute video taking more than 420mb out of my class4 8gb bundle sd card. Without any special purpose, personally i think HD either make it frame rate at least 30fps or none, or why should we need a "half way done" quality and performance?
In addition, i found out the responsive performance of so call "continuous auto focus" quite slow and undesirable. Even i continue point at the same place for 5 second and the video still blur, i need to try somewhere else to get its focus to shot the video. In summary, auto focus is not responsive.

I get 7.5 fps in a dark room, 15 fps in the late evening (outside, say) or with the lights on at night, and 30 fps in a bright environment, all at 720p. I'm quite happy with this.
I am getting 15 fps average for indoor on HD (around 18 for FWVGA) and around 24 for outdoor HD (25 on FWVGA) - no matter what, I never reach that magical number of 30fps, even n bright daylight.
Also, did anyone notice higher graininess in low-light HD videos compared to low light FWVGA?
Topic says it all, when shooting video in dark situations framerate drops to 10 - 12 -17 so it's frustrating! Since the specification of the video says that the variable frame rate if there is a chance to somehow locked at 30fps!
Great magicians of hacking help please!!!
Nope, wait for a update from HTC and hope for the best... (for now anyway)
Even if we set Exposure to -2 and ISO to 800 we can't achive 30 fps, so, if we lock frame rate to 30, in low light, it is possible that the video is to dark for us to do anything with it.
IMHO DHD have a poor camera sensor for low light.

I really dont care how much noise will be introduced. 30 fps is most important. Is this even possible for a developer here to work on since this is HTC's own app and i think HTC dont release their source?
Have you tried shooting with flashlight on? Or setting the white balance manually, I'm sure I read somewhere that helps, turning off automatic white balance removes the annoying changes in brightness and helps improve framers alongside setting exposure to manual.
Be nice if it just shot un 30fps all the time like iPhone, I'm sure it will be sorted.

So, is there a way to record at 30fps at night?I searched all over the forum and didn't find a way.(besides reducing the exposure which makes videos very dark)
I noticed a thing that when I focus the objects aren't so shadowy because of low fps but only just for a moment like half of second and then it returnes to the normal 10-15 fps.

Nah dude there probably is no way. It's the hardware here that's the problem here.
The problem is that the sensors in your camera need a certain minimum amount of time to get the picture to look correct.
I could tell you how to get it locked at 30, but then you would hate me because your video would turn out extremely blurry, and to that extent, so dark that you might as well have just recorded a black sheet of paper.
(This would of course come with rooting your phone, which I wouldn't think is a problem)
The thing is, its been coded into your device to reduce the frame-rate, so that you at least get a scene in a video at a bad frame rate, instead of black in a video with good frame rate
Yeah, but as I said before, there is a thing that when I focus the video there is a small interval of time(about 1/2 sec) when the frames seem to be normal(25-30).I don't know if this happens only on my device but before the gingerbread update I didn't notice this. You could try it or I can even send you a recording. And why does the camera sensor state that it can record @60 fps in light and 30 fps in dark?(according to this thread p=13510330)
I don't know very much about its camera and I don't say that I am right about this, but I want to improve the recording as much as possible.Even my friends MOTO Defy is better in low light.
Also will a custom rom improve the performance of recording?

I don't think any sensor manufacturer can specify framerate in "dark" because how do you define "dark"? What your eyes percieve as "dark" is more like "pitch black" for a camera sensor. Especially a small crappy one that sits behind a small crappy lens. Remember that to have 30 fps, you should be able to "gather" enough light to make a properly exposed image for a 1/30 of a second. Take your point-and-shoot camera, or even a DSLR, set it to manual mode, set the ISO to 800, set the shutter speed to 1/30, set the aperture to f/8 for a 28mm equvalent focal length (if you are using DSLR, for a point-and-shoot with a smaller than DX sensor, you have to dial it even higher) and see what picture you can get with those settings. This is how much light hits the sensor for 1/30 of a second. This is how your videos will look like.
EDIT: You should not compare video recording framerate on phones that record in different resolution. DEFY can record up to 640x480 (if I'm not mistaken) which is 1/3 of the frame recorded with the DHD (1280x720). With a good recording algorithm this means three times more light per pixel (if the sensor is the same).
