I rooted my phone today, all went well, so I decided to try a new 2.2 ROM. Made a clockwork backup and was able to install the new ROM no problem, but I had a bunch of contacts and such that were saved to the phone and not backed up, so I booted into recovery mode (with the help of ROM Manager as my phone is one of the hw locked ones) and restored my backup thinking I could use Titanium Backup to backup all the contacts and the few apps I wanted to keep, then reinstall the new ROM. It went through the restore process, but when it finished and rebooted it got stuck at the Vibrant / Samsung screen. I've searched through dozens and dozens of threads, but I can't figure it out. What can I do if I can't get into recovery (or download) mode? I sure hope it can be fixed.
That just happened to me yesterday and this method fixed my vibrant
Per that thread:
1.Your Device must be in DOWNLOAD mode to use ODIN.
I'm unable to get into download mode.
Well, first of all; there is a fix for hardware locked phones that you really should have flashed first. It worked like a charm on my own phone, allowing me to get into download and recovery mode.
A good place to start is here with the holy bible.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771111
I recommend looking at this download technique
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=749413
If that doesn't work, you can make this simple little jig to pop it into download mode.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
And if you get your phone back to a stable state. I recommend looking at the hardware lock fixes.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=802763
yes that can be tricky but watch this video it went right to download the first time for me
ceosmind: Followed the video several times, but I only get the green battery screen. If I hit power as well, I get stuck at the Vibrant Screen.
cwoodworth: I'm pouring though the links you gave...I'll report soon
cwoodworth:
Link 1 is awesome, but everything I read in there needs the phone in recovery or download mode, which I can't get to.
Link 2 didn't work, can't get the phone to boot.
Link 3 sounds promising, but it would have to wait till tomorrow as I don't have the requisite parts
Link 4 is good info, but I can't apply it until I get my phone to boot in some fashion
Ya, honestly you need to just search around the forums for all the different techniques that people have for getting into one or the other. Aim to get into download mode, because then you can reflash a good image.
Chances are you ran a NANDROID restore without flashing a 2.1 kernel (unless your backup was 2.2 as well which means I'm totally wrong). To fix this, see if you can boot into recovery and perform "adb mount" and push a 2.1 kernel to the phone. Flash the 2.1 kernel and your phone should boot properly.
Open up odin on your pc,take the battery out of your phone, put it back in , hold the volume up and down keys, plug the usb into your phone this should get you into download mode. I dont know if this will work because your hw locked but it can't hurt to try good luck.

go_l_den : You called it... I was under the impression that the backup was a full backup including the kernel.
I've tried every way I can find to get it into recovery or download mode, looks like I have 2 options left
1. Make a jig to force it into download mode tomorrow
2. Try to trade the phone for another at T-Mobile
Bummer
AustinKnight45: When I try that I only get the green battery screen. I've tried in both Linux and windoze

HELP!!
My Sprint Galaxy tab seems to be soft bricked. I tried to install the CWM recovery using the bootstrap method and then rebooting into recovery, factory reset/data wipe, and cache wipe, then rebooting. Got stuck at samsung logo and the directions of the thread said to just hold power and volume up and that will reboot into recovery so the file convertion could continue, but its SCREWED! And the worst part is that I am on vacation and I use my tab for everything. I was planning on using all this trip and I only have a mac, not a PC so Odin is out. If someone could please help and get me back up and running I would really appreciate it. Like I said all the resources at my disposal are a macbook pro and a HTC Inspire 4g. TIA
do you have an sdcard installed? Yours is doing what mine did, and then i inserted the sdcard and it started working. basically, if you dont. the phone is trying to find it so it can convert it to ext 4 and just loops.

Actually the instructions are to power off the device, then hold vol up and power. This may be what you were trying to say, but if you indeed tried to do it exactly as you said then it would simply power off the device.
Yes that is what I was trying to say, I held volume up and power till the samsung logo came on
And mine had an sd card in the device, do you think it is worth it to take it out and put it back in? I am willing to try anything at this point. I really just want to get it back up and running, I bought it outright and don't use the sprint network, and I use my phone for gps so I don't need either of those. Just want to know how to flash back to stock, want to use it for an ereader and to watch movies.

How far into the CwM process did it get? Did you ever make it into CwM Recovery? If not, then the issue was with the kernel/recovery flash and that should be all you need to fix.
You have a few options for doing this if you can still get to DL mode (vol down and power to boot), the easiest being Heimdall GUI or Odin. You already said Odin is out due to your current situation, so how about Heimdall? I am not sure where to get a stock kernel/recovery for Sprint, but the KhasMek Voodoo Kernel with Recovery is working for Sprint users, but perhaps with some limitations that are outlined in the thread later on. Check out the Heimdall instructions in the OP to see what you need to do if you can use Heimdall. The same instructions should apply if you can find a reliable stock kernel/recovery zImage for the Sprint tab.

Ok Thanks I just downloaded Heimdall and am going to give it a shot, what do I have to lose. If all else fails I can just wait till I get home where I have a PC with odin and I can just flash the almost stock rom that is floating around. If I successfully flash the zimage from the kernel thread will that just replace the current kernel that may be causing the issues?
Well I think I am screwed. Heimdall failed with a failure to get a response from device error and now all I have is the phone ! pc graphic. I really dont know what to do now. I think I am going to be screwed I dont know how to get out of this. No more download mode no recovery mode. NOTHING!
PLEASE ANYONE OUT THERE!!! I REALLY NEED SOME HELP WITH THIS!! I eard that if the battery goes dead while your at phone ! pc your screwed and have to tear it down. And because I dont have a windows computer I cant use the odin method just yet.
Well not that anyone cares because of the lack of activity on this thread, but I thought I would post what fixed it just in case someone else has this problem. I downloaded a stock Sprint Rom, that actually came with a modem that works I think (I don't use sprint service but my baseband is there) and with working GPS. I found it on this forum somewhere it was called Sprint_D30_Tab or something. I went and borrowed a windows 7 pc from a neighbor, plugged my tab in when it was in Phone ! Pc mode, let it download the drivers, then loaded odin up with no PIT no Repartition, and did the CSC and PDA slots, then let it run. It took alot longer than any odin did on my captivate but it worked. I have a fully functional Tab again!
Thats good news! The cwm bootstrapper sure seems volatile for some, likely why it has never left beta status. I would recommend avoiding it, and if you get the itch to install recovery again I would go straight for KhasMek kernel until a better solution for CDMA tabs comes around, if ever.
find one windows pc and flash the pit with rerepartition, dont know if it gona boot your tab but a least alow you to acces to the download mode! pm if you need the file.
I notices a few users have mentioned that they're dealing with trying to restore or unbrick their Continuum after flashing incompatible kernels and other problems.
I made this backup immediately after I got root, before I did anything else, to make absolutely sure I wouldn't be SOL if anything went awry. I've made absolutely certain this works, by unzipping and flashing on my own Continuum prior to uploading. It contains the system, recovery, and kernel partitions.
This file is also helpful if you need to get back to stock for warranty purposes, in which case you can manually un-root by using your favorite file explorer (I happen to prefer ES File Explorer), grant root permissions, mount system as rw, then manually delete SuperUser from /system/apps, su from /system/bin, and busybox from /systen/xbin. I hope this helps some of you who have been stuck.
You don't need to be rooted to flash this. Simply unzip, flash the .tar.md5, and you're golden. If you end up in restore mode after flashing, you probably need to do a hard reset, but this is unlikely as I tested it by flashing this a few times after installing various programs from the Market and never had to do a hard reset.
Don't forget to put your phone in Download mode by removing the battery, then holding the vol down button while inserting the usb cable. Good luck!

Thanks for this. I had been messing around with the phone. I was able to get it back to stock.
Kay I try to flash this and it's telling me it's an invalid image type
Never mind, I got it. Thanks
Not a problem, glad I could help!
My phone was soft-bricked. This worked like a charm. Thank you so much!
I ran this and everything passed then when i boot up the phone with animations and sound after the animated verizonwireless logo is up for a while; everything goes black.
any suggestions? never mind I had to do a wipe then it worked

Yup, gotta wipe! At first it's so easy to forget this step. When you get to customizing your installation, you'll get to used to having to wipe it'll become second nature!
I'm so glad to hear this is coming in handy for you all! Now that you got this done, get yourself froyo, courtesy of imnuts: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197415
Ok after having installed EC03 Froyo via imnuts's thread. Everything was going fine except for some bugs here and there. Fast forward a couple weeks later and I try to fix those bugs by installing a stock odin rom via torque's thread (seems so foolish now that I look back on it). Which brings me to today and my bricked Continuum.
Well to explain further I tried to install the odin Rom only to receive a FAIL in the end (Selected the md5 file through the PDA option and proceeded to flash). Disconnected afterwards only to find out I can't even get the Samsung logo to show up or the phone to charge, but the phone will still go into download mode.
And this leads me to this thread with the same outcome. I've tried flashing this eclair? image only to end up with the fail message again. After the recovery.bin stage it just says "Complete(write) operation failed." Any help with this matter would be appreciated.
Edit: After some searching, gonna try it with imnuts' DL17 image. Will post results.
Edit2: No luck with that either. Guess I'll just wait until the Bionic gets released, but for now I'll have to dig up my dumbphone.

Read the OP from pastorbennett here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203597 and try the unbrick process. You can do a search for pastorbennett and trailblazer. Both have posted "recovery processes", or at least links to others that have posted recovery processes. They've saved my butt a couple of times... Except on my first phone that wouldn't go into DL or Recovery Mode. It would just flash the Samsung logo, over, and over, and over again... That happened before pastorbennett posted the unbrick info. Oh well, Verizon replaced it under the hardware warranty. Thankfully.
Looks like I didn't search hard enough.
Thanks for the link Moon. I will be trying this ASAP.
Hit a little bit of a snag trying to get it to work. It told me to install drivers for my device, however my Phone does not show up in the dropbox and the only related thing I can find is "Gadget Serial".
I've tried uninstalling the drivers, but Win7 is being a fool and automatically installing drivers for me.
Does anyone know why i get a 'FAILED' after trying to flash this with Odin? My phone is soft-bricked btw.

Okay, if you can, grab a different computer (either Windows XP or Windows 7) and install the samsung drivers from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1203597. The hint here with ANY Windows computer is to install the device drivers FIRST! (I've been a system administrator for about 20 years.) Then plug in the hardware. It usually makes the installations go MUCH smoother.
If you have to use your computer, try installing the Samsung drivers first, then plug the phone in.

The key to odin seems to be this:
1. Start odin.
2. Click the PDA button and select the odin TAR or MD5 file. (You can only do one. Not both.)
3. Make sure the phone is not plugged into the computer.
4. Make doubly sure the phone is not plugged into the computer.
5. Put your phone into download mode. (With the phone off, hold the Volume Down button and turn the phone on.)
6. Then plug the phone into the computer.
7. Start the odin flash and you should be good to go. Also, before unplugging the phone, make sure it says either success or failed. If it doesn't say anything, or says loading (or something like that), WALK AWAY! Go get yourself a cup of coffee, a soda, a nice cup of tea... Something. I recommend waiting at least 10 minutes. If the progress bar has not moved, in that time, okay, then pull the cable and the battery and start again.
I tried to do this, but when it boots into recovery mode, it says update.zip is gone. Any ideas why this might be happening? Also if it's like this, will Verizon take it back within the 14 day return policy without charging me anything?

I don't know, however, pastorbennett posted this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16600453&postcount=29. It might help? I use Linux at home to build most of this stuff, then use my wife's Windoze machine to flash. It just seemed easier.
Yes, you can use heimdall, you just need to extract this .tar and put the extracted files in the corresponding location in heimdall xD
Sent from my SCH-I400 using xda premium
yeah i saw that but in heimdall 1.3 the UI is different. i don't know where to put any of the stuff. i have the .tar but i dont know where to put the other stuff. here's a screenshot
Hi there,
I had been umming and arring about rooting and installing a new ROM one of my familys HTC Heroes for some time now and finally after reading lots of "How to's" on lots of different forums I decided to take the plunge and give it a go using the guide on here.
Both my wifes phone and my sons phone are sim unlocked Orange HTC Heros running 2.1-Update 1.
Rooting it was easy. One press of a button and I was there. Its pretty much worked OK and I have sucessfully made three backups of the wifes Hero.
My main query and this is the bit I have not really been able to find much info about despite spending a day trawling through the forums looking for similar queries is this:
Having flashed my recovery image file, the first time I reboot I can get into the recovery mode just fine. From here I can make a backup of the current ROM after which the Hero reboots and goes back into the OS as it should.
If I then shut it down and reboot using the HOME key + POWER option It does not go into the recovery mode. I get the screen with an image of the phone next to a red triangle with an exclamation mark in it.
Using the advice from various forums whilst searching for further advice / hints I have left the phone for up to half an hour but it stays on this screen. The only way to get it out of this screen it to pull the battery.
If I then boot up the phone and reflash the recovery image, I can then get into the recovery mode once again but for ONE BOOT ONLY.
I have tried AmonRA Revcovery v1.7.01. and also the Clockwork Recovery 2.5.0.7 images and both produce the same results. I have tried flashing the images via ROM Manager and also via Android Terminal Emulator
My question is this: Do I have to flash the recovery image EVERY time I want to open the recovery mode or is there something I have missed? At present I have held back from installing a new ROM in case I go past a point of no return where I brick the phone. Neither my wife or son would be too pleased despite my son wanting a better ROM on his.
Apologies for writing "War and Peace" but I wanted to make sure I had covered all I could and hope this is a) not a query already posted elswhere which I have missed b)posted in the right place. Apologies to any forum mods if its not.
Regards
Rhinestone.
hmm look on the unlokr.com or something like that. They use some simple passes and it's the way i did it. the on;y difference is that my phone wasn't blocked on a carrier...
1.there is a program that roots the hero's rom
2.after that i recommend installing clockwork recovery mode (it doesn't need signed zips)
3.if you don't feel safe doing this, i recommend to stop... I know that the 2.1 rom is boring but you can end up with a bricked phone after this...
The official 2.1 update has a script that reflashes the stock recovery every time the phone is shut down.
Hunt about for a modified 2.1 rom, all of them have had that script removed. I'm not a huge fan of sense now, but when I did use it, I found villainrom to be a good 2.1 sense rom.

This, just flash a custom ROM and it will stick.
Hello,
Problem might be with rooting, possible it has not been rooted completely or anything messed up. You can try this for rooting.
http://unrevoked.com/
If you are sure its rooted completely, then check out Superuser apps, if its there, and you are rooted, if not then download terminal emulator and type "su" command, if its doesnt display any error then its rooted.
Other then this,
problem might be with the recovery images you are flashing, download droid explorer its a window application, its has an option of flashing recovery with one click, simply choose recovery image & flash it, clockmod recovery or amonr any of this you can get in xda.
Ok, i realize i have a different phone from this thread but it is close and my problems closely reflect the issues ive seen with the Galaxy S.
A little background. Im no perfect i know what im doing when it comes to rooting. I have an HTC Tbolt and rooted many of those, an older touch pro 2, and this is first time doing a samsung. I am getting the hang of ODIN (i wish everyone would just use this program instead of bouncing back and forth between heimdall and ODIn but whatever) Im liking ODIN cause it works well. I was successful at flashing a new rom into this Samsung phone. 95% of it worked, wifi i think didnt but everything else worked. While trying to fix the phones wifi somehow i have stopped the phone from booting into CMW recovery unless forced or booting into a rom. I can get into CMW but i must hold down the Vol Down button to get there, otherwise a clean basic boot takes me to the stock android system recovery screen and will not boot a rom.
I have something backwards or out of order. I am just trying to get the rom to identify the installed CMW and the installed ROM through CMW but it wont do it.
Any help would be appreciated, i dont want my GF to find out i jacked her phone lol
Which phone do you have? SGS? I can just talk about SGS+ but I guess its similiar.
Try to install CWM with Odin, normally it should replace the stock recovery (haven't heard of both running at once).
Once you have installed CWM you can install your custom ROM with CWM (look at the install instructions).
If you want to install stock ROM with Odin it will replace your CWM with stock Recovery.
Post the link of the thread/recovery you want to flash.

Its a stratosphere. Im using the root and / or stock files in the root method. I use ODIN to flash the StratCWMRecovery.tar.md5 and if i tick "reboot" then it reboots into CWM i install a rom or stock rom and it finishes. I reboot the phone and it instantly goes back to android system recovery. If you like ill make a short video to give you an idea of whats going on.
I will note that im close to making a jig but its not 100% bricked obviously. 3 button method still works (and unecessary at this point since all the phone does is go straight into the stock bootloader) and then after i install CWM i can force it in to CWM but it wont actualy boot into it.
From a programing standpoint i feel the pointers or partitions are incorrect. Its like booting a computer that has a hard drive with windows installed however getting the bios to tell it to boot from the hard drive isnt working. THats the easiest way to explain this.
One thing i want to note is the only errors i am getting are when i try to partition the SD card from CWM. I get an error saying sdparted is not found.
I am not getting a full understanding of how the root system works on this phone.
Again any help is appreciated.
Made a short video. Its uploading now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFZ5Adm5AdQ
So whatever i did i was able to fix. I think me being a very visual person and normally having access to all files i need or could use in a situation is always nice. Here, i didnt but i found them. Here's the link. Its obviously for stratosphere but i took about 10 minutes and let ODIN install all these files and it worked.

where i downloaded it

Again this is for stratosphere. Since it really helped me return to stock and allow me to re root in about 15 minutes this thread should be moved but there is no stratosphere area
ok, so i have the verizon lg g2, i have flashed numerous phones before and never had anything like this happen. First off, it took me hours to just get the thing rooted after going thru about 15 different walkthrus before one worked.
Then i decided i wanted Malladus ROM so i tried flashing twrp recovery with loki, didnt work, went thru damn near every forum about it coming out with nothing....until...found one talking about flashify and everyone said it worked fine. So i do it, took about 1 second and said it worked, restarted and nothing had changed, except now i cannot enter download mode! When i do it just shows "firmware update" it never changes, left it on all night still at 0%.
I have unrooted it (even though it still says its rooted, but no longer have permissions) and i did a full reset, NOTHING works!!
So before you guys chime in, let me tell you what i have tried....EVERYTHING lol .....I know the only way to fix my phone to fully unroot it is to flash back to original rom, so i went to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960 and that wont work because 1. cant get into dl mode, and 2 it wont let me open the flash tool (did everything right, researched and came up with nothing)
then i went to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476 cant get that to work either because cant get into dl mode, so now i have TWO 2.2gb rom files on my comp that i cant use,
And just to be clear, I KNOW HOW to go to dl mode lol, i have wrote it several forums and all people keep saying is the stuff ive already said.
Oh and i cant push with adb either...that is how i originally tried twrp and after 3 hours of trying to figure it out i finally got it to go thru (it was wrong i think but it worked) and that may be what has caused it to crash the dl screen.
Ive never used adb before and after reading 7 diff forums beginning to end (bout a 1000 pages) i realized they were all the same but do not actually explain enough for someone who has never one it. It said to push, well idk what that meant! lol I need step by step instructions in order to fix this, even the tiniest of things may be something i would miss.
PLEASE HELP ME!!!! Thanks guys!
Download mode should work... The first night I got my G2 it was about 4 in the morning, and I immediately installed TWRP on it (3.2 is what you want 3.3 doesn't work), and promptly erased everything on my phone... Partition, data, and everything.
But download mode was still intact, and that first thread you linked worked just fine for me. If you're having issues with that flash tool and being stuck at a login screen, you missed the part where it tells you to download a DLL file and place it the flash tool install directory. That file will bypass the system login and let you use the program.
I don't know how long you've been up, but I'd say take a break and come back to it in a bit. If you still can't download mode to work, have a friend come over and look up how to get in download mode, then have them try it. I've done that many times... Thought I was doing everything right and a second pair of fresh eyes found some tiny thing I overlooked in the process.
I hope you get your phone working man, sorry I can't be of more specific help.
