Is there a way on the Vibrant to flash *.zip files like on the Nexus One? For example, I have a Mobile Defense as System App *.zip file that on the N1 I flash from the Recovery menu. Is this possible on the Vibrant? How else can I install System Apps?
it will be posible to flash .zip files in recovery once we get a custom recovery. there is a guy working on porting clockwork as we speak so it souldnt be too long before we can flash roms and kernals and other .zip stuff

You can only use the .zip flash function on the phone to manipulate some files. If you wanted to add a completely new rom you must use Odin. The clockwork recovery being done is still in it's very basic stage where nothing is working. So it's impossible to tell if they will get it to work especially since the bootloader is completely different from all other android phones.
Why not just inzip it on your computer and move the apk to your sd and install it that way?

Cause then it wouldn't be a system app. He could just use adb to push the file though.
Tried to push the file but I can't do adb remount. It says no such file or directory. What am I doing wrong?
Anyone??????
Your probably pushing the file to the wrong place.. Do you have the Samsung drivers and SDK installed?

Yes, because every other command works. Also, if you look, I am getting the error when not even trying to push. I am trying to do ADB REMOUNT.

Samsung devices use a different code to remount. Try this
mount -o rw,remount /dev/st9 /system
This is ripped from the behold 2 so you might have to play with the directories
yeah, if anyone can figure out what the mount directories are from /dev/ it would be great. i'm trying to push my ringtones so that they dont show up in media scanner. seems like a simple trick, but when remount wont work and we dont know the mount directory, its harder than it seems.

If so then it might just be because we don't know what mounting block to use.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before (I did search before posting), but there are a few widgets from the other Galaxy S phones that are rather nice, the weather clock in particular. I know there is a Fascinate dump out there, but can I just extract the apk and install it, or is there something else that I need to do. Any help is appreciated.

Download the firmware that has those widgets and pull the apks and install them on your firmware of choice
If anyone does this post it please, if you link a how to ill do it.
Well, i pulled the APK's out of the ROM, but I'm not able to install them. I'm really new at this, so forgive me for the ignorance. there are ODEX files that accompany the apks...do i have to do something with those on order to install the widgets?
you'll need to use adb shell once you copy the files to a location on your internal sd card
you'll need to mount system as r/w first so do this, so:
adb shell
su (your device needs to be awake and unlocked so you can verify the SU request)
mount -o remount rw /system
cp /sdcard/xxxx.odex /system/app
cp /sdcard/xxxx.apk /system/app
reboot
the reboot is just for good measure. i've used this technique to get apps onto the phone, but as usual YMMV. If you post up the apk and odex files as a zip i'll give them a shot.

Do tell!!
I had asked about putting the Samsung Touchwiz widgets on if using Launcher Pro. Was told no.
Would this method allow that for them?
Well, I've uploaded the files to Rapidshare, but thanks to the restrictions on my noob account, I can't link to the files.
rapidshare files 421816817 Samsung_Fascinate_Widgets zip
OK, major problem.
I copied the ODEX and APK's to the System/App folder and rebooted...now my phone will get stuck at the "Galaxy S" logo page and the display stops working. connecting via USB to the computer allows me to access the system via ADB, but I can't get the display running. What's the command in ADB to remove the files I just copied over?
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/st19 /system
rm /system/app/[name of widget file].*

Hi guys
I'd manage to manually deodex the app and framework file from my stock rom. The problem are I can't push them either thru adb nor update.zip. Been googling around but can't really get a correct adb command for sgs. I need to push these files so that I can install themes. Anybody who can guide please help. Thanks in advance.
You need super user permission to push things into read only memory. So you would need to go through adb shell, mount whatever folder framework is in to readable, etc.

Hi snapper.fishes
By the way, I got superuser permission. The only problem I don't know the correct command for the adb shell - su - mount etc, etc....
This are the command I got from Droid forum but it does not work for SGS I guest.
adb shell
su
stop
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
cp /sdcard/done_app/* /system/app/
cp /sdcard/done_frame/* /system/framework/
rm /system/app/*.odex
rm /system/framework/*.odex
mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
reboot
Anybody got any idea?
Try this:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
cp /sdcard/done_app/* /system/app/
cp /sdcard/done_frame/* /system/framework/
rm /system/app/*.odex
rm /system/framework/*.odex

I say remove the lagfix first. It's not necessary, but if you do screw up your phone you are going to have to reflash your phone, and the last thing you want to do is to flash your phone with lagfix on.

It's been a long time since I pushed files this way. Right now I'm using update zips and flash it via ulfk. Reason: it is much more simpler and more effective. If I remember correctly, your apk files need to be deleted too before you can push your deodexed apks and jars files to the system folder if you do it via adb.
Besides, I would not advocate this method of pushing through adb, bcos, there is always chances that your /system, /data partitions may result in data corruption.
Try using update zip.

Thanks for your reply g00ndu. I've already try that. But after the zip file updated nothing happen. Maybe the zip creator that I use is not compatible with sgs. Hey angiogram... I'm not sure if this thread still has a pulse, but I came across this thread and feel confident I can offer you some great information.
g00udu was on the right track, only one small detail I would add is reverting the permissions back to the system files once returned to the system directory.
See this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=990238
for an extremely detailed step by step how to perform this process from beginning to end.
If this issue has been resolved, keep it for future reference or pass it on to someone who you believe it may help.
Peace-
Thanks Liv33vil.

I'm kinda new to android
I've started to delete useless apps through Titanium Backup(acer staff, games etc) , and exidently deleted smth connected with honeycomb stock keyboard.
Now every time when i want to use stock keyboard, pops up a messege "The application Android keyboard (process com.google.android.inputmethod.latin) has stopped unexpectedly. plz try again".
Ive tryied to reset factory data but it wont helped. Is thera any solution for this problem? if there no, plz tell how to completely reset tablet) ive read "system Images " thread but i didn understand some things
here is my recover steps: (for a500 which is bricked)
for a500 is normal:
root it
put the system.img into a500
connect to the computer with adb and follow the codes:
su
dd if=/sdcard/system.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3
then reboot

You might very well have ruined your tablet.
I'm not a developer or coder so I can't make any sense of the code you posted but if a reset didn't fix it then you've certainly deleted something important. Hopefully someone has some ideas.
If not, then maybe you can return it? And next time, don't delete something unless you know what it is you're deleting.
ok ive recovered from image, but now wifi is not working , what should i do?
There are posts about having to change file permissions to fix wifi. Search this forum, there are a few.
edit - linked post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074449&highlight=wifi+permission
yeah ive read this but i dont know how to move that files to system folder on devide, wifi is down , so i cant download any file managing apps from market and theres no any file managers on stock Rom
If you've got the adb working, you can use the command mv to move the file.
I'm not sure of the exact path involved, but for example. the file is in /mnt/sdcard/filetobemoved and needs to go into /sytem/lib/modules
mv /mnt/sdcard/filetobemoved /system/lib/modules
That'd put it in the location you need. To change the permissions, you'd use the command chmod
chmod 655 /system/lib/modules/filetobemoved
The 655 is an octal(0-7) representation of the file's permissions. I'm not sure what permissions it needs, but you could try 655 as a start unless someone else knows for sure.
if you want, hit me up on msn, I can try to walk you through it: [email protected]

No clue. I really should start reading up on HC app development and at least familiarize myself with that environment.
I haven't rooted yet cause I'm e'scarded to.

got this "failed on '/system/lib/modules/filename' - cross-device link"

type mount and paste/retype the line that has /system in it. It might be mounted read only.
or try the cp command in place of mv
edit - also, the filetobemoved is just an example. I think one of the filenames is bcm4329.ko but I'm not sure. so /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko would be the full path

yeah thats i know)
Are you logged into the tablet using adb's shell? I've only used that once on a different tablet, but iirc the commands are standard Unix/Linux commands. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but aren't you already logged in as superuser like this? You don't need to 'sudo' or 'su' to switch over do you?
I'm not familiar enough with this specific environment to figure out what might be keeping you from placing those files in that location. The command to check the partitions mount options is
mount
It should return a bunch of text, one line of which is gonna be the /system partition. If it's ro(read only) then you can't write to it and would need to remount it.
yeah it looks like it is "ro"
ive got /system ext4 ro
how to remount)
My knowledge of adb is limited as well. All I know is that I can connect to it, type: adb devices (in the command prompt) to make sure it sees my tab then 'adb push filename.extension /directory/structure' to force files... Conversly, I think adb pull filename.extension /directory/structure will grab files on the tab if you know what they are called and where they are located.

what was the /dev/block/mtdblock for /system?
there is a number after it...for example /dev/block/mtdblock1
mount -o rw,remount -t ext4 /dev/block/mtdblock1 /system
would remount it read/write, provided that it is mtdblock1, change the number depending on what your device has.
yeah now /system have "rw", but it anyway refuses to copy using mv(failed on '/system/lib/modules/filename' - cross-device link"
) or astro manager

If cp won't put it there either, I'm out of ideas. Maybe ask in the other thread how they were able to copy/move the file and set the permissions?
I know it may not be really classy, but how about downloading an .apk That will let you mount the drive, to an sd card in a computer then transfer that to the Acer. (If it's an extreme case and nothing else will work..not condoning piracy, but don't know what would work...)
or is it possible to copy the system data from a Titanium backup and send it over so he can restore the missing files?
This following step I can't be responsible for it's safety. It looks safe to my eyes, but proceed having been forewarned. I did some research and you might be able to use dd to get the file there.
dd if=/mnt/sdcard/filname of=/system/lib/modules/filename

Your need to get the device to be picked up by ADB and then push the files if your not able to boot into the actual system itself. Your have to ask someone else for the commands... but here's a snippet for services.odex the rest the files should be similar pieces of commands.
Code:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
chmod 777 /system/framework
exit
exit
adb push services.odex /system/framework
adb reboot

I was having the same problem as you are and was able to fix it by doing the following.
Download and extract the files NighthawkXL has provided.
From within the folder that you saved the files run command and do the following
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
chmod 777 /system/framework
exit
exit
adb push services.odex /system/framework
adb push DownloadProvider.odex /system/framework
adb push DownloadProviderUi.odex /system/framework
exit
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
chmod 777 /system/app
exit
exit
adb push DownloadProvider.apk /system/app
adb push DownloadProviderUi.apk /system/app
adb reboot
I think this will solve your problem with the downloads not working. Please keep in mind I have small amount of knowledge when it comes to rooting, but figured that it couldn't do more damage to it since it wasn't working.
