Zero GPS Satelites??? - Vibrant General

yesterday i was on Google Maps and I clicked the 'My Location' button. It said it was unable to locate me-- 6 TIMES! So I went on here and did the whole dial *#321478650# thing and delete GPS data, cold start, etc. when i opened up GPS Test, it said there were 0 satelites to lock onto and there were 0 in view.
Now, I live in Phoenix, AZ and I used to ALWAYS get atleast 10+ satelites in my area. The only thing I have changed is I flashed the sombionix obsidian v3.
Any idea how to fix this?

Maybe redownload and reflash. Maybe you got a bad download or a bad flash.

How long did you let it sit looking for a lock? It won't lock immediately, especially if you have it set to Cold Start. Mine took about 10 mins for first lock after a cold start.
If you have let it sit for a bit and still can't get a lock... I don't know. Maybe a reboot would help?

I waited about 2 mins... I didn't know it would take that long. I'll go try it for 10 mins.

GPS unable to find my location.

So my G1 can't find my location via GPS no matter where I am. I am standing in the middle of a soccer field and it is "your location temporarily unavailable." So I installed GPS status from the market and it is showing that 0 satellites.
I am using JF 1.51, radio 2-22-19-26I, and the DEV SPL(the one with androids on skateboards). Anyone have this problem or know a way to fix it? This has been going on for a few days so it's not a satellite problem. It is phone related. If more info is needed from me I will do my best to get it to you.
Thing I have tried(updated last 16 JUN 2009 12:18 PM -6:00GMT)
-Toggle GPS on and off
-Reboot
-Combination of the above two multiple times
-device wipe(alt-w) and re-flash the JF1.51 ROM
-Toggles and reboots again
-wait for more ideas from you guys
Now I tried installing the dudes cupcake(awesome by the way) but GPS still doesn't work. It picked up one satellite for a couple seconds then it disappeared to 0 again.
Try toggling GPS off then back on. Maybe reboot the device too.

Tried that. No dice. I will edit my original post to include things I have tried.
Did you try waiting a few minutes with GPS status ?
At some point my GPS was very very slow to get a lock.

I let it run all night(6 hours). Still reading 0 satelites.
Update. Got one satellite to show up for a couple seconds then it disappeared. This is after I wiped and installed the dude's latest rom. Still getting 0 satellites in GPS Status and no location on my maps. I have tried the old and updated google maps.

Do you have another GPS equipped device that shows satellite lock? If so, your radio might be dead.

I was afraid of that and I think it is. I just rooted my friends phone and everything works fine. Also I have a Blue Force Tracker(US Army advanced GPS monitoring computer, in laymans terms) and that is working fine. I'm gonna un-root and hope i can get an exchange with t-mobile. I've only had the phone for a month or two.
Just got off the phone with android support from t-mobile. It's funny when you relize you know as much them and then some at times. This place is great.
But back to the main point. I told them the GPS is out, and I have re-flashed the OS(i left out the root and other than t-mobile os's part). Final answer from the rep, we will send you a new phone, sorry yours broke. So that's it for that. JF and TheDudes ROM's had nothing to do with it. Just a bad model I got. Now to un-root...
I just reflashed my phone with stock JF1.51 to clear out some cruft from past experimentation. Upon loading up my complement of apps from the Market (including the 3.1.0 Maps app) I opened Maps and noticed it would not lock onto GPS with a clear view of the sky.
I was able to fix it by opening settings and turning off the Use Wireless Networks option then opening maps again. After it got the first GPS lock, I turned the Use Wireless Networks option back on. All is fine.
Might wanna try that out? It's worth giving a shot.
I don't know what happened but i have reflashed my phone over 5 times today. I was trying to put apps2sd back on JF1.51(skipped a step and bricked it, twice lol) and now it is working again. Strange.

I MIGHT have fixed my gps

I have had the same problem as most people with the 10 + minute lock time on gps for google maps. I have tried the gpstest trick and it helped. Today as usual I was reading and rereading posts here and tried out the secret codes. I used the gps code and changed the gps boot from hot to cold and now after several tries about 10 minutes apart and 1 with gps off for over an hour and turning phone off and on a couple times. I am getting a lock in less than 30 seconds every time.
Sometimes initial lock is off by 100-150 yards but within a few seconds it drifts to proper location and locks.
I know that this takes a lot more testing and I may not have actually fixed anything but wanted to get the info out in case I stumbled onto something that could help someone.
Who knows maybe I got lucky and now some of the amazing brain power around here can work on something else or maybe tonight the gps just likes me.
Someone give it a try and let me know it it helps.
i havent had any problems with getting a lock. i turn the GPS on, then use "GPS test" and usually have 4-5 sats locked in under a min. then in the next 20-30 sec it jumps up to 8-10 sats. i think the problem might be with google maps and not the GPS itself.
That's about how it is working for me now, without having to open gpstest to get the lock. Now I just turn on gps and open google nav.

Just curious but did you turn off gps, drive to a different location, turn on gps and get a lock in less than 30 seconds? If so then maybe you are on to something.

how about a link to the how to or give us some steps to follow...
I have not tested this in different locations yet. I will be driving around a lot tomorrow and will try it in as many different locations as I can.
As far as what I did I followed the instructions for unlocking secret codes here:
Go into the Dialer and enter *#83786633 then press the Home key
Go back into the phone dialer (delete old code )and enter *#22745927
Now a box will come up asking for the SPC code. Enter 000000
Press the Hiddenmenu Enable radio button.
Now you can use these codes.
Then I entered the gps code:
*#1472365#
after that I went to "position mode"
then starting mode
and changed it from hot start to cold start
I was just guessing that if I was cold starting my gps and the software was expecting a hot start that might cause a problem with it gettting a fix before the gps warmed up. I may be wrong in my "logic".
I have several stops between 5 and 20 miles apart and I will turn on gps and google, get a lock, then turn it off do what I have to do. Repeat the test, turn it off drive to the next location and do the same thing. That will give me 2 locks in each location several minutes apart.
I will try to post back sometime tomorrow afternoon about my results.
I hope that will be enough of a test. Should I also turn the phone off and on between tests, not just the gps?

What's more important is, can you turn off GPS, wait several hours, turn it back on and still get a quick fix?
Once my phone knows where the satellites are, I can be anywhere (reasonable of course, not like a bomb shelter) else and get a quick fix. What really slows me down is leaving my GPS off, like 3-4 hours, so it doesn't have up to date data, then test it.
It probably won't lock fast when turned off for a while and in a different location.
You don't actually need the dialer to do this. Long press home screen/shortcut/activities/gpssetup
good to know, that is a lot easier than using the code.
Looks like I didn't fix anything. I woke up and turned the gps on. No lock yet after a couple of minutes.
Yeah don't feel bad dude I did the same thing and got excited
I couldn't even get a lock in gps test this morning had to turn phone off and back on then was almost instant. Not a clue what happened.

Samsung GPS fix. NEW!

ATTN #Vibrant users: We've created an app to help optimize GPS. Go to the Android Market & search for GPSSamsungRestore: http://ow.ly/3hEpr
Straight from their twitter about 10 minutes ago.
Update: Before anyone gets excited the app ONLY resets GPS to the original settings. Not a real fix as most of our GPS' were not working properly out of the box.
Don't get your hopes up.
# Does the application contain new values for GPS?
* No. The application only resets settings to factory defaults and then writes data in setting file.

Epic failure! As I expected it would. Tested this app and it tried to lock on 3 times before it gave me a message saying that I needed to contact a service center.
I have tested this application few times. I can officially say that it dies, while soft rebooting the phone, more times than to actually work. This application is as good as GPS itself.
Yes, I have positive results with it also. Used it and I got a lock instantly. Opened up navigation and it was spot on, no arrow jumping all over the place. It may say that it just reverts it back to stock settings, but whatever the case may be, it works.
edit: nm found it
Samsung gets pwned by XDA ... once again!
Two of the epic failuers of this phone is the lack of flash and improper GPS.
I downloaded the app as soon as i seen the tweet. It looked good initially, i got lock instantly, multiple times after running the app, but when I tested it out on a drive my phone would lose GPS signal after less then 5 mins, then it take another 7-10 mins to get another GPS lock, this kept happening the whole time....
Didnt make a difference. Still takes 2 or 3 mins to find my gps location. Nice try samsung. I mean WTF is the REAL problem with the GPS? I know! a hardware issue! EPIC FAIL!!

[Q] GPS lock issues?

Anyone else having issues getting a GPS lock? I'm sitting inside a building but my Hero would always lock here, especially after resetting the AGPS data with GPS Status program. Tried that with the Shift, and still not getting a lock even after a minute. Not sure what else to try.
Typically I keep mine turned off, but I just turned mine on and went to Maps and it locks my location in.
mine took a little while to initialize (indoors) but it locked in within 30 seconds.
No issues here. Inside my GFs apartment it locks very quick and is probably about 5-10 feet off according to google maps. My moments GPS never locked or worked so I'm extremely happy with the GPS quality on this phone.
The first lock took around a minute to get. Now it gets a solid lock in just a few seconds, if that.
A little off. Not as bad as my gfs Samsung Instinct, but it does often have me a few hundred meters from my actual location.

GPS is spotty for me as well. GPS Status won't even get it working for me when it won't work.
When it does work it is not as accurate as my Heroc was. Hopefully this gets some love in any updates.
GPS is great for me. The only issue I've run into is that when I go from Maps to Navigation, my SD card gets mounted as read-only for some reason.
I know a couple of days ago I tried to use my Google Maps/GPS and it couldn't get a lock on me. It was like going crazy or something. However, it was snowing and kinda foggy so maybe that had something to do with it. It worked the next day though when the sky was clear.
No gps lock on my end either. Also tried the gps status clear....nothing so far
EDIT: just opened maps for about a minute or so and it locked finally. Closed maps then opened again, locked within seconds.
Bumping this thread: I have issues with getting a GPS lock. If I open Google Maps, I'll never get a lock (at least not before the phone goes to sleep - 60 seconds). I open up GPS test, which I downloaded from the market. It gets one satellite to lock right away. Sometimes two. Then it takes forever to get 3-4 more (at least 60 seconds). I can then go into google maps, and it will get a lock within 15-20 seconds. But if I let the phone go to sleep, and open up maps again, I don't get a lock, unless I do the GPS test. And sometimes that doesn't even work. I've done the GPS Clear thing, via the epst codes (##GPSCLRX#), and that doesn't seem to do anything. I'm running the MikShiftG 1.1 rom. I'm going to make a nandroid backup, and see if that happens on a stock 2.3.3 rooted rom.

GPS finally working again!

I couldn't reply in the developers area because I haven't posted enough, but wanted to say thanks to Raptorseye for the following:
"download gps status in market, run it, wait till it locks, then you can use your gps/maps..."
Ever since I moved to Gingerbread I've tried everything to get my GPS to work again with no luck. I've tried the ACS GPS fix, I tried remounting the file system and modifying the permissions, I've tried going back to an ec05 rom, and also swapped out the ec05 modem and ee03 modem.
But by running the gps status application from the market as recommended and letting it sit there for about 8 minutes, it finally locked on to over 5 satellites indoors. I was able to then run other gps apps and they worked.
Unfortunately, you have to repeat the connection to the satellites every once in a while using the gps status app.
There's a setting for gps status to download a gps data every hour if u want it to. In gps status click menu tools manage a gps state. Clear the do it again and click download. But as I said in the settings you can have It download assistance data every day or even every hour. Open gps status push menu settings. Gps and sensors. Then auto- download agps data and set it too what u want.
I too use GPS status, but it does take a long time. For me, the quickest solution is to power down, pull the battery and reboot. Takes less than 8 mins (which might be important if you're trying to get somewhere!) and you'll get a virtually instant lock when you go back to your favorite nav app.
Here's to hoping this gets fixed in GB!

This means you're not getting the ephemeris (Xtra) assistance data on boot, or at least it's not being used.
Are you able to get fixes faster using the Settings -> Update AGPS option in GPS Test? GPS Status has a similar option, but that may crash the GPS if the crash bug hasn't been addressed in EE03.

Does an assistance update from GPS Test help here? Or does only a reboot fix it?
It does not take a reboot to work for me. I just reset a gps then download agps assistance. And close gps status and I lock fast every time. Of course as I said I have it set too download assistance data every hour

The assistance data is supposed to be valid for a whole week, so it shouldn't have to be done more often than that. Although it wouldn't surprise me if it needs to be.
I am curious as to how often folks find themselves needing to update assitance data. Once a day? Once every few hours? Last time we looked into this there wasn't a clear answer.

Hm, never have used GPS Test, but I have it installed now and will give it a shot the next time it gets hung trying to get a lock.
The cold boot wasn't my idea, but I heard it mentioned on here months back. I was getting late for an appointment, so I figured, what the heck, i'd give it a shot. The OP mentioned that the battery-pull method is the only way to really clear the GPS, and I'll be darned if it didn't work. It's solved the problem every time I've run into it. I'll be sure to give GPS Test a run and see what happens.
Thanks!
I have been plagued by the no lock/10 minute lock. GPS status didn't help. None of the patches have helped, in the long run...so I just down loaded GPStest Plus, the newest one, and it seems to do the trick. Instant lock the first time out. Tried again a few hours later and nothing after a few minutes so I reset and redownloaded agps and bam, locked within seconds. Will try again in an hour when I usually would not get a lock or a very, very slow lock and see how it goes.
