anyone else seen the galaxy s phone yet? it released on Tmobile last week same day as the droid x... unless you were following it you probly dont know... I dont have t mobile so I didn't know it came out yet, but my friend got it and I have to say the 4 inch super amoled screen is beautiful and the 4 inch size is virtually perfect... every company is making their own rip off of htc sense anymore so it doesn't really matter... I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the phone after what I dealt with having my omnia... but most of that was winmo problem
the display made my friends iphone 4's "retina" bs look like an omnia, our screens just dont get that bright and vivid, avatar looked beautiful on it

I own an incredible and must say that that phones super amoled looks great... no wonder samsung is hoarding all the amoled displays to themselves... when the galaxy s comes to verizon I will be switching, unless the incredible starts printing me money and doing my laundry
eh, have fun with that. I love my exclusive incredible on Verizon because everyone has the same phone that posts something about it..with Samsung having the same phone on all four networks..i guess it's cool, but there will be several diff radios to tinker with since it's on TMO, ATT, Verizon, and Sprint..
Are you saying that the Samsung AMOLED screen on the Incredible isn't as good as the Samsung AMOLED screen on the Galaxy?
considering their tech specs are so close, and their sourced from the same manufacturer, not sure where you're coming from on this one.

Um yes there very different. That's like saying a lexus and a toyota are the same even though they are both made by toyota.
The Galaxy S screen is gorgeous. And easily outshines our regular AMOLEDS. Yes the difference really is noticable.

Actually Lexus brand is a US thing. The Lexus line up of cars are marketed as toyotas in Japan. So you know there's that.
And I've seen them. My AMOLED screen looks just as awesome as a vibrant's. Especially when they are sitting right next to each other, playing the same movie. So there's also that.
Go have fun with your Samsung, but please stop talking.

Um well I live in America. A Lexus is a Lexus. I could give a **** about what it's called in japan. And BTW Lexus is marketed as Lexus in 70 countries. Even japan. The bottom line is that Toyota makes BOTH Brands. Which means that my point is still valid. He was saying there wasn't a difference or that the tech was so "similar" that there wasn't a difference. The SUPER AMOLED has a higher dpi as well as better viewability in direct sunlight and less power consumption. Also images don't look "jagged" like they do on my incredible. Did I say the screens didn't look similar? Nope. I said the SUPER AMOLED is better. Which in all accounts it is. Better power consumption, better readability in direct sunlight and in non direct sunlight. Higher dpi which means much crisper and detailed images. Plus better viewing angles. So you stop talking. Troll. I own an incredible btw. I can't own a Galaxy S variant on Verizon. It isn't released yet.
I'll stick with HTC.... the galaxy s screen is nice tho.

Played with one today as my sister in law got one. Nice screen, great hardware all around, but the dog slow response time of the home button and other capacitive buttons was killing me the whole time I was trying to set it up. For now I'll keep my Incredible.
the difference between the AMOLED and the SUPER AMOLED is lower power consumtion for one, and the Super AMOLED has both the sensors and display all in one thinner peice making more room for the other hardware. I personally dont think the displays are visibly any different
Just read a tweet from Eldar murtazin, who is generally well informed, and today he wrote sonething very disturbing.
Samsung seems to have stopped the production on the wave and the galaxy s due to super amoled screen shortage.
This is nothing short of a disaster for all of us hoping to see the galaxy s being supported with froyo and beyond i guess. (or even cyanogenmod for that matter...)
I really hope this is just a temporarely thing, just as with the droid incedible....what do you guys think?
cant produce the phone when there is no screens for it... so ofc they will once they have a stock
In this case, sell the phone. No big deal.
Sent from my GT-I9000M
this is their best selling phone, and the only real competition againts iphone
i doubt they will stop producing it completely
it'll just be on hold until they get more stock of SAMOLED
they did the same to HTC Desire
but instead of waiting for new stock HTC decided to use another type of screen
as soon as HTC did the change the Desire suddently became less desirable
@allgamer
I hope you are right about that but this would explain why you cant find any SGS here in Edmonton or in Canada at all from what I understand which sucks if you brick and need replacement, etc.
Also, do you think that this issue will delay the FROYO release to those of us who already have the phone?
according to Eldar, they sold their last batch of SAMOLED screens to Apple, who is making a product for next year with our screens in it!
now, i really hate Apple!
they see that retina alone isn't enough, so close the deal with Sammy!
i hope this won't kill Samsungs ambitions to become the biggest brand above Nokia!
yes, they are mostly back ordered even in Toronto as well, the sales are good, it's like iphone always sold out.
froyo has nothing to do with the factory side
froyo will come when the coders are done fixing the bugs and get things working properly
Don't worry about it too much.. Apple has product shortages all the time. More screens will be made. Really, don't worry about it too much..
"ANYMORE" is not the word! Why make such confusion?
Its a break in production due to shortage of SAMOLED screens.

You actually believe that? Apple does it deliberately to make the product more desirable, simple as. They like to see people queueing up 12 hours before a product is launched outside of their shops, good publicity etc.
As the the Super AMOLED rumour, it is just that, a rumour, like most things I see written on the internet. Isn't it samsung who actually produce these screens? And there is a shortage? I dont buy it...
Then again though, I wouldnt trust samdung as far as I could throw them.
That would explain shortage of SGS in Poland.... Especially with one carrier that has best prices for it.... I'm searching this phone for about 1,5 months...
by the way, this can't be true anyways
else the new launch this month on Rogers network will fail completely if that was true

They will probably switch to the sony slcd screens

Have you seen a desire with the SLCD screen? I prefer them to the AMOLED ones, they are a genuine 480x800 resolution and look sharper, and the colours are not much different IMO. Apparently they are worse on battery power though, despite the claims to the contrary...

AMOLED or SAMOLED? The AMOLED (like the Nexus One) are pretty disappointing in the long run, SAMOLED (like the Galaxy S) hasn't disappointed me even after a few months of owning it.
Isn't the real "strength" of the SAMOLED screen the contrast ratios and the inky blacks...? Will SLCD ever be able to match that because of the back or side lighting needed to actually illuminate the screen?
It's probably just a shortage, they couldn't keep up with HTC's demand for it, and they probably can;t keep up with their own...maybe they didn't truly believe the SGS would be such a success
Logicalstep
I was told from the importers/Saturn that Samsung Galaxy S were empty and Samsung are going to make more Samsung Galaxy S. They told me that people were crazy for Samsung Galaxy S and that's why the stock were empty.
the news and my phone store sources confirms the same, the SGS just sells really really good.
the 16 GB model is always the hardest to get, i did post a topic about it a while back
8 GB models are easier to find, but who would want less?
same reason why 8 GB are easier to find than the 16 GB models
now of course, for Cellphone carriers models those sizes are locked, you don't really get to chose
only the unlocked models you can choose to buy in 8 or 16

"Samsung's Super AMOLED is a variant of AMOLED technology in which the layer which detects touch is integrated into the touchscreen display rather than being overlaid on top. This results in a thinner device and improved outdoor performance."
LCD tech will never be able to match AMOLED blacks, but there's still the "issue" with PenTile RGBR matrix. Red font on black for instance? Looks horrible. Text in general is its achilles heel. Video, images (well, not B&W perhaps ) and graphics looks amazing though.
Samsung comes out with something even better. Super PLS. And you thought waiting for Froyo left you anxious.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/01/samsung-touts-super-pls-display-as-the-evolution-of-ips-on-smart/
From reading that still sounds like super aomled is the better etch, this seems like an improvement on IPS
So... Super amoled 2 anyone?
Well, with how I am with phones, I usually jump to a different device within 6 months.
One thing is for sure, I am not going down smaller than 4 inches. I hope Samsung release a SAMOLED 5 incher that's got Motorola's Defy durability.
Umm yeah but short on the actual tech spec. Apart from it having good viewing angles.
Logicalstep
sounds like it's in direct competition vs. Apple
which basically means lawsuit for copyright inflingement, etc, etc...
I'll stick with SAMOLED until the dust settles
I tried using back my old LCD HTC phones and OMG i can't stand the old screens anymore... it's so.... OLD!

Ive had so many phones over the past year it unbelievable but the screen on the galaxy s2 is so much better than what they mention in reviews. Theres no friggin way this comes second to the iphone retina display, Resolution isnt everything.
I took a picture in the dark the other day without the flash by mistake so when i clicked to preview the image i though for a moment that my screen had turned of because of how true the blacks were. . Im sticking to Samsung for as long as they make phones because i am impressed with what they make, just a shame really that apple are having there products banned in some country's

Super AMOLED, not Super AMOLED Plus.
Quite a big difference, actually.
This display remindes me of old ferrari engines. The sound and the rev fantastic, a pleasure to drive, but some of them had early problems and the lifetime where actually quite low compared to others.
This display has great things, vivid colors, contrast and real blacks, the viewing angle... but some have yellowish tint or blue, strange paterns on grey or similar colours, and if you go and see the displays of S2 exposed on stores that stay on during days you can see the display doesnt live long withou shadows and yellow spots, and the known ghost problem...
Well, I don't experience any of these yet. Read that color tint was software problem. Anyway, my display needs to last 1-2 years max. After that I will be using new device.

The colour tint isn't a software problem, but it can be "masked" by software so that it's not noticeable. Either way though, you're right. It is a great screen and other than resolution I can't see anything better about. It'll last me my contract for sure.
Lovely display. Better than anything out there. So happy to be an owner of S-AMOLED Plus.
I come from HTC Desire Z with Super LCD Plus screen. We used to compare it to my friend's iPhone 4 and found them to perform very close, with Desire Z having slightly richer colors.
But this Super Amoled Plus display is out of this world!

Too big for me... I like how the 4.3" size fits perfect in my hand and let me do things. Adding 1inch makes the phone really big... I saw a review and the guy could barely hold it in his hand.
When I take a black photo and show it on the phone in the dark I can see the screen light up a little. Is this how it is supposed to be or is it just my phone?

Yes it's not small, but some time ago I thought SGS2 is too big and I bought HTC Desire Z instead, yet I'm using SGS2 now ;-) Second - I have seen people holding the new Galaxy Tab 7.7 in one hand. I do realize Note is big, but it is still pocketable, while any other tab would not be. All my keys, money, IDs and devices need to fit in my pockets or belt case. That way I always have important stuff on me, no need for any bags which I could forget.
And because I rarely make any phone calls, using device mainly for web browsing or other things, I keep thinking about Galaxy Note

I guess I have big hands, I can easily hold and operate S2 with either hand. So I guess I can probably do the same with Note, albeit a bit awkwardly.
Also it's not true black. Make a black pic with photoshop, load it on your screen and go to a dark room, and you'll see.

Download "Screen test" from market. There is a pure black picture to check dead/stuck pixels. On my screen in complete darkness it is so perfectly black that i cant see my phone.
Super Amoled Plus is indeed amazing with its vibrant colours and contrast. What's more amazing is that at 4.3 inches it's really the perfect size (at least for me) as it is the maximum screen size where you can hold the phone nice and easy with one hand.

I think you need to do tons of research before you come and make such claims.
SGS3 =/= Galaxy Nexus display wise.
Manufacturing of the SGS3's display has been improved upon in comparison to GN in addition to the different light levels, the SGS3 uses Gorilla Glass 2 which is thinner giving it less light diffusion in the glass giving it better view ability.

+1, went to a phone store today, took a good look at the Note's screen, it's nothing short of amazing. I'm not afraid anymore of the S3's screen, since it basicly will be a smaller version of the Note's screen. Also a few good reviews showed me that the S3's screen is one of the best ever.
I love it how human's work. They hear the word "pentile" and like sheep everybody starts saying it's "so bad, so bad", while many probably don't even know what it is. This entire pentile madness needs to stop. Just take a look at the screen and if you like it, buy it. If not, don't.
I loved it how a website that reviewed the S3 already gave the phone to some people and lied to them that it's "not pentile", they loved it an all (while they also go crazy when knowing a screen is pentile, they say they can see pixels and ****). Then afterwards, the guy told those people it's actually pentile xD I have a strong feeling it's all placebo effect.
Yet another pointless and poorly written thread to discuss one of the least important aspects of a PHONE...whether the HIGH DEFINITION screen on a PHONE is good enough for you to get through your day. First world problems to the extreme.

Least important? I beg to differ
On touchscreen device, nothing is more important than the screen itself
I was worried about the screen after reading random people complain about it here, after reading some reviews and looking at the screen comparison here i dont see any reason to worry.

I guess the difference in brightness could be contributed, partially at least, to the fact that the S3 has Gorilla Glass2, which can be used in thinner sheets without sacrificing strenght.

You know exactly what I meant. You mean to say that if the HD screen on your phone isn't as sharp as a high end IPS LCD then that somehow limits your ability to use your touchscreen device? Pure rubbish. This is a PHONE, not a digital movie screen.

Humm.. I don't know i found this in gsmarena. You see the values for GS3 and Nexus are different. I don't know if the display would be the same.

in case of this table, the galaxy note has a much better screen than sgs3

I guess the difference in brightness could be contributed, partially at least, to the fact that the S3 has Gorilla Glass2, which can be used in thinner sheets without sacrificing strenght.

No, it just makes it more vieawable. The glass has nothing to do with the brightness. They are different factors.

I was worried about the screen after reading random people complain about it here, after reading some reviews and looking at the screen comparison here i dont see any reason to worry.

I will be buying a Samsung S3 over the HTX One X and the Samsung S2 for that matter

Thank you so much buddy. I pre-ordered one but when i saw this post i was truly worried about the Screen. I am using Galaxy s2 at the moment. After looking at the pictures in mobile-review i confidently say Galaxy s3's display is the best of all in terms of color saturation and Vividness.
Guys please take a look at the sample pics. I don't see any reason to worry S3 has the best display of all. I think most us are worried about retaining the saturated colors in S2, yes it is retained. See the images.
the thing is gnexus has lower brightness than s3 so it might be the cause. If not you are one among the few rare candidates who can see the pentile matrix directly without any lens, so its better for you to stay away from s3.
btw does thing thing need a new thread?

Well i cut this from Cornings site:
"Corning Gorilla Glass 2 enables up to a 20 percent reduction in glass thickness, while maintaining the industry-leading damage resistance, toughness, and scratch resistance customers have come to expect from the world’s most widely deployed cover glass. The thinner Gorilla Glass 2 enables slimmer and sleeker devices, brighter images, and greater touch sensitivity. These benefits can provide electronics manufacturers with superior design flexibility as they address consumer demand for increasingly high-performing, touch-sensitive, and durable mobile devices."
If Gorillaglass 2 allows for a 20% reduction in thickness compared to the original Gorillaglass, one would think it should increase the brightness a bit. I'm not saying its the whole story, but they do infact mention that it enables brighter images in the exerpt above.
