Couple Of Questions...

Hi foks,
I'm getting my Silver Xperia this Friday (Can't wait)
Got some questions.
1. Hows the Camera?
2. Hows the flash/flashlight?
3. Hows the speaker sound?
4. How is the sound quality trough 3.5mmjack? (Or does it depend on what ear pieces you use?)
5. Hows the battery life? I'm almost 24/7 on msn 3G in some cases H and my TyTN II starts in the morning with 100% and ends in de evening 50/45%. How is this on the Xperia?
6. Hows the scroll pad?
7. Hows the panel?
8. Hows the phone in general?
9. Xperia X1, or Touch HD???
I've used the Xperia for 2 hours a while ago (Demo) and coudn't test everything cause the software wasn't correct.

Take your time and read some posts on this board. You will see that all your questions are answered in detail.
Edit: What the hell I will answer them even if I don't own one yet (but I've read many posts here).
For a 3.2 megapixel camera it is good but seems average, competing with other phones that have more megapixels.
The Flash is a LED light and as all LED lights it fails to be a proper flash. It helps a tiny bit to give some light in dark areas.
Average, some people complain it is too quiet while others are okay with it.
The sound quality is quite good from the 3.5mm jack. If you have cheap earbuds it will sound bad. With better equipment you will always have better results. That's the case for all audio devices.
Battery life is excellent considering other phones. This is a major plus for the xperia.
For scrolling it is good, though some members are annoyed if used for directions (instead of the standard direction pad) because they find its behaviour erratic. You can calibrate it for your needs, with the sensitivity options or disable it completely.
Average. Some panels are quite good, others are just gimmicks. The transition from portrait to landscape seems a bit laggy. Other than that it seems to work okay. Unfortunately panels don't run in parallel, so when you change from the Radio panel to another FM-Radio stops.
The phone is pretty good although some people question its high price. The craftsmanship is among the best. My opinion is that it is the best WinMo phone right now. When it matures it will definitely pay off its value.
Do you want a large screen (same resolution) or a hardware keyboard? If you need keyboard go for X1 if not go for HD.

I think the camera is quite good compared to my other phones. I never took a pic with the touch pro so i can't tell u if that was good or bad. The video quality is pretty decent too.

Never used the flashlight to take a pic but i would its just like any other. Pretty awful.

Speaker is way too low for me and the fact that the speakers are right by where u would hold the phone so ur covering the speaker when ur using it.

I'm watching a movie on it right now and the sound is pretty good i guess. I'm no expert but i also have no complaints.

MY GOD!!! The battery is the sickest thing i've ever seen. I had WIFI, bluetooth (which keeps cutting off), screen on max brightness, Running TFL3D and streaming video and i got 4-5hrs out of the battery.

I like the scroll pad its a nice work around for having no directional pads on the keypad.

I like the panels too. They aren't as slow as i thought they would be and its good to be able to just change ur today screen. Having TFL3D as a panel is what made it the greatest for me.

That is a personal decision. If u don't mind not having a keyboard then go touch hd otherwise i would go xperia x1 i personally wouldn't even have the touch pro in the ranking.

I do know your rep so I'll chime in..
Camera is about the best I've seen on a htc device, but that doesn't say much it's okay within obvious limits, video is pretty good..
flash is htc LED flash, say no more.
speaker is tinny and weak, as expected, single tiny speaker that you can cover with your hand far too easily, this has good and bad points.
Earpiece during calls is superb, plenty loud and people sound very clear with wonderful deep roundness to it. I described it to someone yesterday as like listening to BBC Radio 4! I also get comments from people telling me how clear and loud I sound, my Dad keeps phoning me 'cos he can actually hear what I'm saying for a change.
headphone sound through included headset is superb, rich full lows and really zippy high, and that's without the audiobooster. it looks like the vodafone tweaks have boosted the lows and reduced the highs a bit.
Battery life is good after first couple of days (of playing far too much). SE appear to have done some work on tweaking this, especially standby. I left mine on without using it last night, it lost 10% in 10 hours
poor connection (constant searching), UMTS bowsing and WiFI kill it though lost about 40% in 3 hours.
I've grown to love the optical touchpad, at first I hated it, and set the sensitivity all the way down, but with use I've set the sensitivity really high and use it instead of the D-pad keys most of the time.
Panels I find are boring very quickly, the card effect is good to show off down the pub. Pretty gimmicky overall, works very well to impress p*ssheads though! TF3d works very well, for me at least and is better..
Maybe I'll install the SDK and see what you can actually do with them, potentially it looks like you could use them as a container for running today dlls I think.
Overall phone is best WM device I've tried, I was a bit cautious coming from the Athena, but I've even got used to the small size (for me at least it feels small) but that's cos the last two phones were Uni and then athena.. And I've got huge hands, so it disappears, there's once or twice I've left the house and gone back to find the phone as it's so much smaller than those two you don't notice it's there, to realise that I've got it in my pocket all along! (a bit embarrassing as I've got music playing)..
I did contemplate selling it and getting a HD, but I've really grown fond of this, if I was offered a direct swap I'd be tempted but I'm very very happy.
FM radio is okay, don't tend to listen to radio much, but it picks up all the local and national channels here.
Main drawback is that it's probably the most mainstream WM phone there's ever been, I think that's a good thing, but it does mean we've got loads of new users in here that don't really understand what XDA_Developer is about and think people are here to tell them how to use their new pocket power ;D
:edit: one more thing, and something I noticed the first time I turned it on, the Wifi is the best I've ever used. I was picking up a signal from my router at the end of the drive, that's better than my laptops Sparklan a/b/g/n
I'm getting about 3 times more routers picked up travelling through built up areas than I ever did with the athena.

Do you regret the X1?

I've been wanting and waiting to buy the xperia since it was released. I'm finally just about to buy it (had one ordered but the order fell through on their end, and so now have time to reconsider). I'm a programmer and very technically-minded, so I am not anticipating having any technical problems with optimizing/dealing with the phone. I'm looking for something powerful (and beautiful) that I can customize and use fully for a while.
However, I see many posts here about people regretting purchasing the xperia, mostly because of sluggish performance (and case cracks). When I go to the local Sony store to play with the display phone they have, I can definitely see that I would be very unhappy with a stock set, it's too unresponsive for me, plus the finger-friendly issues with win6.1. I know all about the different speed tweaks and touchscreen response tweaks available here for the xperia, but it's hard to get a feeling for just how well they work and how much a difference they really make.
But since I'm a regular xda reader, etc, I have hopes that some of the nice roms posted here will improve the system responsiveness, I'm especially looking at gtrab's set, mobilevu's v-lite and wild child's concept rom.
My question is: even if you continue to stick with the phone, do you actually regret getting the xperia?
I've been waiting for a long time for a real killer phone and while the xperia looks like it for me, I don't want to be disappointed even with custom roms... the hero looks like an option to me if the xperia isn't going to live up to my hopes.

Absolutely I regret it. At the time I had just drowned a k850i, and bought another k850i to replace it. Then I saw a decent deal on an X1a, and I went for it. For the money, this phone just isn't worth it. I was happier with my SE dumb phones. I'm waiting for the Idou or whatever they're calling it now. This is after spending months waiting for the c905a...

Yes, I regret getting the Xperia X1.
I've had an XDA of one sort or another for the last 4-5 years so I'm used to WinMo and it isn't the OS that's the problem. My perception is that it is too fragile for day-to-day use. My sig says changed twice due to cracks in the casing... make that three times as of today!
It is only the fantastic ROMs from the talented chefs here at XDAdev that make it bearable. Most of the ROMs have Rhodium enhancements, and since I really like those enhancements, I'll be looking at a Rhodium next time around.

Nope because I get every dollar (even with the discount) out of my purchase. I use ALL of the features on a daily basis lol.

I do not regret buying an X1. But, buyer beware, it is not perfect out of the box.
My fun was getting it perfect for my preferences. I enjoy having the option to dig in and customize my device with various software or settings tweaks.
It is a well made device and the R3 rom which was finally released for NAM yesterday has improved my reception as well as speed and smoothness running different programs.
I have also flashed it multiple times with custom roms from the chefs here at XDA.
While the price for it was, and still is, ridiculous, I am happy with the phone overall.
I would love to see a winmo 6.5 upgrade for it in the future but realistically, I don't expect it.
I have had mine for around four months, have no cracks in the case and protect my screen with a Martin Fields protector. I use a ICE-45 OEM case.
I would recommend this phone as long as you have disposable income.
It doesn't matter what you buy, in six to twelve months something better will be available. That can be said for all high tech devices.

i do regret it, i've been using sony ericsson for 3 years and lots phones: k800> k608> M600> W880> K850 > W960 >xperia1
somehow Xperia1 is not perfect to me
- camera isnot better even than k800/k850/w960
- music player is definitely worsen/ not friendly than k850/w960- this 2 phones were amazing at its onw strengths- camera/music
- xperia speed is somehow slow/ often hang
that all i want SE to improve and put effort on X2/3 which should have combination of k850 camera/ w960 music and speed. if they do it, their phone would be perfect all aspects

If you are not too concern about the lack of response, I would say its one of the better WM phone..
If you are not too concern about phone hanging once in a while, I would say its one of the better WM phone
If you are not too concern about the music quality, I would say its still one of the better WM phone
If you are not too concern about Window Mobile OS, I would say go get the X1
Do your research on the X1 and compare features before you decide..
For me, yes, I regret it and it has such a low resell value that I am stuck with it for a while now

I regret getting the Xperia...
The Primary Reasons (In Priorities Order) That I Got Xperia:
1) Optical Mouse - All of the reviewers on the internet kept referring the D-pad as an Optical Mouse. I didn't want an Optical Joystick, I wanted a Mouse. Furthermore the effing reviewers rarely mentioned that the D-pad was horrible.
2) The keyboard - Everyone raved that the keyboard was amazing, so I thought that I'd enjoyed it. But I think even the HTC Touch Pro 1 has a better keyboard. Why? We all know the front D-pad on TP1 and X1 sucks so much. But atleast Touch Pro 1 is designed for text functionality and has a keyboard D-pad which Xperia lacks. I was at first content with the lack of keyboard arrows because I expected the optical mouse and D-pad to work flawlessly. The Xperia does not have good indicators for Capitalization or blue FN keys. You have to look at the screen and it is hard to tell compared to looking and typing simultaneously on the keyboard. I always capitalize or insert symbols/numbers unexpectedly. The number keys are hid behind the text and I have never used a keyboard on a phone before so I thought it was a smart move with the Xperia. But it's just totally not effective.
Furthermore I rarely use the front D-pad in portrait mode because that is when my stylus is out, and I learned that it is most useful to use it when you are in keyboard mode, except the optical mouse is hard to use and I want keyboard-like arrow buttons.
3) I never had a depressed screen before - I learned that I would rather have scratches on my phone than have a depressed screen. I remember on a few forums that I praised the X1 for having the "usefulness" of a depressed screen, and now I apologize and join the other side of the argument.
4) I thought the screen was big. I was wrong, I've never had any phone with 3 inch screens before and I thought that 3 inch was big. This is why I do not install Touch Flo roms on this phone because Touch Flo owns on a 3.5+ inch screen, but is pointless in a <3.0 inch screen
5) I expected the front face keys to be easy to press and enjoyable. Boy was I wrong.
6) I thought the chrome was metal chrome as well. I was wrong again. It is chipping off already and the D-pad is also chipping off is glossy paint. But I have to admit it that peeling that paint off makes the D-pad looks much more high quality at the cost of losing the shininess.
7) I thought that the silver battery cover was scratch less and easy to remove from the back. It took me 3 months to perfect the art of battery cover removal.
8) The CPU is slow, but I think there is something wrong with my Xperia. I have a Samsung SCH-I760 in which Pocket Player and Core Player is twice as fast as the Xperia X1 with optimized settings.
The only thing that is preventing my from selling my Xperia is the fact that I love the gorgeous R3A Media Panel and its interface and the 3.5 mm headphone jack and the Flash LED.

What none of the replies are saying is that it depends quite a lot on where you live and mostly work.
Why ? Because the X1 has a truly terrible GMS signal reception in marginal areas, irrespective of which radio ROM you have installed. I've tested this side by side with an HTC P3650 and an Acer DX900, using the same SIM in each device, directly after one another. The X1 works fine in the cities, hopeless in marginal areas.
Also the 3G UMTS (internet) capability is limited to 1900/2100Mhz in the X1. If you need UMTS 850Mhz in regional areas, try for an X1a.
The original battery is underpowered and heats dangerously with continued use of GPS or wifi while on charge.

Hmmm this is a hard one to tackle.... for me I always regret some part of the phone... maybe frustrated is the work I should use instead of regret. my phone progression has been
550 motorola flip --> Motorola TAC Elite --> Motorola QWERTY messaging phone (forgot the model) --> SE P800 --> BB 7250 & SE W900 --> BB 8830 & Nokia N95 --> BB 8830 & Nokia N85 -- BB 8830 & SE X1
the X1 marked a major change in the way I used my personal phone, primarily for e-mail and messaging, so my criteria have changed a bit. Although the N95/N85 were smart phones, i still primarily used them as phones, and not integrated messaging devices. The Blackberry was always for work, and has always primarily been a messaging device so I have drawn the baseline experience from that.
To answer your question in short: No. No serious regrets.
To answer you question in detail: Yes, I have regrets but the issues can be mitigated/X1 seemed to be the best blend of trade-offs:
1) Lack of free integrated international maps. Global data roaming costs and arm and a leg. Pay as you go in some countries don't include data, so Google Maps downloading data is a bit of a concern when i'm using the GPS abroad. This was a factor when I was deciding between the X1 or N97. I spend 9 of 12 months in home territory so i can probably manage without free international maps. (Garmin, Wayfinder don't have maps for Japan or other Asian countries that I spend time in, and you have to pay for maps unlike the free Nokia Maps app)
2) Windows Mobile quirkiness. WM 6.1 is slow. Weird things happen like accounts go missing, spontaneous reboots, lock ups, crashes, when you install different things. It's not as customizable (stock), I haven't found a voice dialler/voice synth, and the menu system is not intuitive. The messaging system is more robust however, and there is great aftermarket customization (ROMS and MODS from here), etc. I think some of these shortcommings can easily be rectified by the community, but they're still annoying. COmmunity and aftermarket support maturity ended up being a huge factor for me.
3) Form factor. It is slightly thicker than my N85, but thinner than my N95, just as wide, and only 1 cm or so taller. It is comfortable in my hand and is pocketable. The N97 is not much bigger, but the BB Bold is a lot fatter. Seemed like a good compromise.
4) Battery Life. Horrid. I could get 3-4 days normal use with my N85. I use 30% of the battery on a low usage day, and 50-60% on a moderate usage day. Mind you I use the data a lot more, which does suck up more battery, but I should get more than a day's charge out of it IMO. I'm going to chalk this up to my use of data, and hope that there is a future radio/rom upgrade that is easier on battery usage.
5) Functionality as a messaging device. I IM, e-mail, and SMS much more than I call. probably 8-to-1. I do find myself resorting back to my BB8830 for heavy IM usage sessions, possibly because I am more familiar with it, but realistically because I'm much more used to the keyboard. Heavily considered the BB Bold for this reason alone. Maybe things will change after a month or two getting used to the X1. The N97 which I also considered had serious issues as being a robust messaging device. It seemed adequate, and may have improved with further firmware releases/development, but S60 5th Edition seemed limited in more ways somehow.
6) Recessed screen. Pain in the ass. Not a deal breaker tho since I have thin fingers and am pretty dexterous. I can understand why this would be a larger issue for other people however. Definitely a poor design choice.
7) Volume. This is a quiet device. I'll have to amplify and re-jig all my custom call tones, and what not. Annoying, but manageable.
8) Poor camera. I'm used to a really good quality 5 MP Carl Zeiss lense that was on the N85. I didn't use it much but it was a nice thing to have as a backup. I feel a bit stifled by the camera on the X1, but since I'm not really using it that much, it becomes a lower weighted criteria.
So as you can see, for me, it was not a simple choice between a BB Bold, SE X1, Nokia N97, or waiting for the new Samsung B7610, HTC Touch 2, SE X2, or some other next gen device. Lots of factors, and yes I do have regrets around a lot of them, but you do the best you can and just move on.
I've found with some tweaking the X1 usable/tolerable, and meeting 80% of my needs. Nothing will ever be perfect, and if I follow the 80/20 rule, meeting 80% of my requirements for a decent price is usually as good a deal as I can ask for.

On reflection, yes... I regret it.
I resent the implication by DatDereX1 that somehow the phone's shortcomings are down to my stupidity. If it was a simple case of software, then all of the problems would instantly be resolved by a flash of the ROM - but that isn't the case. WinMo aside, the hardware is far from perfect:
* abysmal battery life
* poor responsiveness to touch
* recessed screen
* case suceptible to cracks
* poor external speaker
* reception is poor (compared to other devices in the same location on the same network)
When you throw in the stock software, you can add to that sluggish performance and poor usability. Out-of-the-box it is quite simply a device that is well below par.
With custom ROMs the situation becomes bareable but you still can't get away from the basic hardware issues... and even with the ROMs, performance is still far from lightening quick.
Even those devoted to WinMo would surely have to conceed it is not the best implementation of the OS on a device.

I only regret I have no Xperia. I bought one for my wife and she uses it greatly. I have no money currently to spend on another one. I'm stuck for 5+ years with my old trusted Nokia 6230 (not even 6230i) phone if you remember the one.
I know definitely my next phone will be some PPC with WinMo. Maybe X2...

i do regret buying the x1, because now i want something more powerful with more features, eye candy and sexier...but u know what? i am still yet to find the device.
i really want to replace my x1 but i cant see anything to replace it with, will never buy the iphone unless it comes with fm radio, camera light or flash, mp3 for ringtones and multitasking abilities...so im kinda stuck with my x1, lets hope the x2 is much sexier, or else i would be buying a future htc android device with sense ui
i have two problems with the x1 so far
1. the battery loses its paint when touched often
2. the battery life is worse than my p1i ...thing is that i did more on my p1i than i do on my x1

Not at all, I love it.
All phones have their faults, hell, I sold my E90 Communicator to get one of these.
I loved that phone too, but Nokia's support of it was abysmal (it took them over a year to release a firmware fix for the Bluetooth issue that they broke with a firmware release...) and it got to the point where it was becoming a pain to use.
With all technology, there will be problems, they are coded by humans don't forget
I'd rather have 'quirks' or little niggles that can be sorted with small apps or tweaks than to have a featureless brick any day of the week.
Plus, it gives me a chance to satisfy my *need* to play with the newest toys!

Thats so true.
It is just such a tiny little effort needed to put into the x1 to make it the most powerful phone of all.
Again I must stick to my phrase:
Regretting == Not being able to handle the X1

X2 - Need some opinions

Alright. I had the X1 as my main phone for a decent amount of time. Year and a half or two maybe (decent for me, I go through a new phone every six months). But it recently fell beyond repair and I switched to the nexus one, figuring it would be a good place to jump into that whole android world. I do like that world too, however, I miss windows mobile and I miss my Xperia. Now with the X2 floating around, I have a few questions.
1. Does anyone have any prolong Xperiance with the x2?
2. What are the major Cons?
3. What are the major improvements (user opinion) over the x1. Not just the spec list, but look and feel, and help online, roms, etc etc.
4. Would it be worth trading my nexus one for? I miss having a keyboard, and I want TV - out.
5. Lastly, TV - Out, is it horribad?

i havent had experience with it, but i know the keyboard on the X2 is much better in look and feel. i want one myself

Pros: It adds 8M camera and has a flush screen. Accelerometer. Nice new Panel interface
Cons: No conventional D-pad. Little support from XDA-Devs. High price.
I don't feel like the X2 has enough benefit to upgrade. If it was less expensive and had XDA-Dev support (it doesn't because it is not an HTC-made device so it has very different software) I would be looking to get one. Using the same processor and RAM certainly makes it harder for me to justify getting one. I'd say get a nice cheap X1 and save up for the next top-shelf model. IF you must upgrade perhaps an HD2.
P.S. I have not had hands-on time with the X2, just YouTube vids and tech reviews so my opinion is only semi-informed.

loss of the dpad, but you get used to it. i find i use the touchscreen more anyway.
as mentioned before, no support for XDA-devs so if youre into replacing roms every five mins youll be dissappointed. but a lot X1 software still works on the X2, just not everything.
the hardware inside is the same as the X1 so dont expect any major speed improvements when using software. but i was happy enough with the speed of the X1 anyway so not a problem for me.
currently theres no front camera for videocalling and no FM radio support but these will both be activated in the forthcoming update.

the overall experience is much better. the X1 always felt to me that it was a pocketpc with a phone tacked on as an afterthought. the X2 has a much better dialer and phone interface. feels like a proper phone now.

i liked my X1 but it was falling apart, so im pleased i upgraded to the X2. if you wish to return to the xperia experience then i think you would be happy, just dont expect any major upgrades. consider it more of an X1.5 and then you wont be dissappointed. between a cheap X1 and the more expensive X2 then id definately recommend the X2 (unless the X1 was very very cheap of course.lol) dont pay any more than £400 ($700) theres plenty available for less than that price.

nice to hear from an x2 owner, wanted to ask about the included earphones sound quality, is it any good and could you recommend a place one could be got for less than 400£

the included headphones arent too bad. depends how much of an audiophile you are! theyre the in ear type but not the ones that go deep into your ear. i actually kept hold of the X1 headphones as i was used to them. but sound wise theyre very similar. i thought it would be better to sell on unused headphones with my x1. i found the sound quality was much better using pocketplayer rather than the supplied media player. pocket player has dsp plugins with bass boosters and equalizers etc. sony of course are famous for the walkman brand so do know a tiny bit about music lol. they wouldnt package anything too cheap and nasty. i would say theyre a decent mid range set and personally im quite happy with the sound quality. the x2 has a standard 3.5mm jack of course so you can always use a different set of headphones.
i got my X2 from ebay. theres plenty on there right now for just under £400. i was lucky to get one privately which was about £50 cheaper than the rest. i dont think they knew the value of what they where selling

theres plenty of others for around £389 - 399. most from hongkong though but they do tend to give away some free goodies. theres currently an X2 on auction for around £200 but i think its a used one.

thanks for the information on the earphones and also the ebay listings. good to hear the audio quality is decent. hopefully i'll get my hands on one soon.

lol i hope i havent bigged up the headphones too much if youre going to listen to music then hunt down pocketplayer... its not too hard to find theres a big difference in the sound quality compared to wmp and looks very good when its full of albums with the cover art. probably my top recommended software for any wm phone to be honest.

Then the flash stopped working for a little, but I managed to fix that. Recently it stopped working again. Whats funny is the case is cracked up, and stuff isn't working, but the screen (with no screen protecter EVER) Is still pristine.
X2 should be just as awesome, though I like the whole changing roms thing, and xda has been so helpful with my x1. I do like my Nexus one and the whole 1ghz processor and android has been fun. Though I think I may trade it for the x2 to help cover the cost We'll see. If any of you all are interested in that trade, send me a PM. I'm not quite set on it yet, but it's possible.

Well, and I read this a lot, noticed it with my nexus, android doesn't seem quite as mature as winmo, and a lot of the good stuff requires a rooted phone which of course voids the warranty. Everything I ever used the phone was there though (phone, message, email, gmail (two different apps, wasn't streamlined, didn't have an issue though), web access (no flash yet), games (always love all of gamevils games i'll pay for em), and ftp access to my webserver.) I didn't like androids soft keyboard when compared to my old iphone 3gs. Game selection wasn't all that great, but apps were still solid, many of them at least. Other then that though, no issues. I think I've tried every Mobile OS on at least a few phones except a few, and Android is definitely tied up there with windows mobile.

well, it depends on what do you expect from a phone. but mainly, no it isnt a good phone.
if your looking for a good phone buy HD2 (the second hand HD2 is around 80€ more then a second hand X2 but its worth every cent).
its a year old model with still good hardware. you can instal on it MW6.5.X or android... In my oppinion there is no better phone for a XDA forum entusiast.
but let me say another comparison from my own experience (since i had both X2 and HD2) X2 in my country costs like 200€ from second hand and it freezes. battery life is nothing to bragg abouth. bad touch experience its like slavery.
on the other hand HD2 cost from 280 up and its emense freedom. It works great, feels great. touch experience is great. hardware is strong. MW6.5.x, froyo, obuntu, wp7... freedom.
X2 does look good but the software is a joke and not a funny one.
if you have like to much money then get x2 just to see an example how can a solid phone on paper go disturbingly wrong in real life.

A lot of people have opinions like the ones expressed by gbajzelj ... and I would like to express one of liking the X2 ...
I have had it since 4/2010. I am very hapy with the phone -- but I like the WinMo 6.5.3 interface with its flexibility -- and not having restrictions on the app use.
Regarding the phone -- I use the standard WinMo frame, disabled slideview, run overclock (with a clock speed of 1024), run Garmin XT, use Clean RAM, Lookout, have bluetooth always on, sync with IMAP email every 30 minutes and I am in HSPDA network coverage.
I get 2 days of battery usage, the last freeze was at least a week ago, and I don't remember when the one before that was. It doesn't play video very well ... but I am not sure if it is the video or not -- they are downloaded ones from UTube that were converted to mp3 format. Movies that I took with the phone itself work fine.
There are times when the phone will stutter and take time to respond -- usually when it is not getting a responce from the web (like PCs do when the network connection is hosed) ... If I wait for no more then 15 seconds, it responds, and then I do a Ram Clean and the X2 is back to normal ... it have been a week since that happened ... and it could be that I have learned not to do certain things -- but they do not appear to be related to a specific set of things that I do ...
The bottom line is that I am very happy with the phone ... and the times that it fails is no more bothersome then when Win XP failed or locked up on a desktop. I really like the keyboard for text entry and the office programs to run excel spreadsheets and storing of data in Word documents.
But as gbajzelj has said, other phones also run WinMo 6.5.3 and will also serve you well ... but I am a long term SE customer, and I have not been disappointed with the X2.
As a side note ... I looked at the new Dell phone (running Android -- I think) at a store, and its responce -- sliding screens / opening programs -- did not seem to be any faster then my X2 ...

If you don't mind loosing several hours in upgrading firmware, installing some fixes and avoiding to install almost all the Sony Ericsson buggy software, the phone will work fine. There are several post explaining how to do it, but doing this means that you won't have panels or slideview and some others SE's addings, but the phone will be faster than before (this doesn't mean that it will become in a fast phone) and what is most important, stable whit a decent battery life.
Despite of this, don't get cheated by its theoretical features: 8.2 mpx camera is not what is was supposed to be, it's not bad, but my old Nokia N73 takes better photos, smaller, but better, which is a shame. The video recording is painful. The response of the screen is not good, neither bad, but not good. The amount of RAM, 256 mb (about 100 mb free), could not be enough in some cases. Some features like the LED notifications, the light sensor or the backlight management don't work properly.
In conclusion, X2 isn't a bad phone (if you don't mind spending several hours in tuning it), but its paper features are very far of what they were supposed to be.

MR2 makes the phone more usable and a bit faster, avoiding to install SE's **** adds another bit of speed and stability, but after all, the phone won't become in a snapdragon, it will be acceptable as best.
Upgrading firmware supposes the same risk than in other phones, if you run out of battery or you computer turns off, your phone will become in an expensive brick.
I don't know any other phone with this specs, the are great phones, much better than X2, but in my opinion always have a weak point, or the camera is rubbish, or don't have qwerty keyboard, or the battery is insufficient, etc... For me, no one is absolutely complete, so i can't suggest you anyone.

Slideview is a panel that runs on the X2 -- there are panels installed on the phone, and Slideview seems to be started even though you use a different panel ...
Slideview has nothing to do the the screen rotation that is automatically switched when the keyboard is slide out -- there are also auto-rotate fixes for the x2 that will allow programs to rotate to the lanscape mode with just turning the phone (most of the -- don't rotate problems -- seemed to be related to games) ...
For playing music (I actually use it to play audio books) -- I use Mort's MortPlayer -- which seems to work well, and with an ADP2 bluetooth headset, they are easy to listen to ...

Does the notification bug (the one where alarms e.g. sms notifactions like sounds and vibrate wont work after a while of use) happen to your phone? Had me always resorting to soft reset so that I would know wheter I have sms or not..
Could use some help tuning this phone...

Current using the 'free up ram' feature of sktools..how does it par with ramclean?
If its ok, I would like to pattern tuning my phone from yours..

I don't have the problems with the notifications ... I get them (both sound and vibration -- also when I have a bluetooth headset in use -- an A2DP capable one) even after days of having the phone on ...
I find that RamClean seems to work better without any problems -- I used to use the SKTools one, but it would occasionally freeze the phone ... the RamClean does not have problems ... I use the Level 3 clean with a scheduled clean every 3 hours ...

Will probably reset my phone this weekends if I'm not too busy...
Might as well try the 'start-from-clean-wm6.5' step..
Hope that fixes the notification bug too..

I have not had battery problems with X2; I've used it since Aug 2010. I always have bluetooth on, and connected to my BT watch, BT car stereo, or BT home phone. I have LOTS of stuff installed, and a 32gb SD card. I've been known to run certain apps for 2-3 hrs straight with screen on and still have some juice left over.
In all, I enjoy the phone for it's sleek design and excellent flush screen more than I did the X1 (I bought the X1 the month it debuted, and still have it). The keyboard is absolutely untouchable. That alone is something that makes any kind of bugs something you say, "I'll have to search for a fix for that," rather than, "I better get a new phone".
If SE ever really focused on fixing the firmware one more time, or present an Android option ...the X2 would stomp all over similar devices.
But, there are indeed many core issues with this phone that you have to surmount, even after upgrade to MR2 firmware:
1) Fix for the SD Card corruption-bug
2) Fix for the display backlight timeout not being controllable.
3) Fix for forcing the screen to go off, but not the device to 'sleep' (this helps with certain BT & wiFi connections & software)
4) Add software to select programs for auto-rotate w/G-sensor
5) Add Opera
6) Add Advanced Config to tweak system
7) It's better if you overclock it.
8) Add SK Tools for system maintenance
9) Add JetWare bluetooth extension in order to transfer contacts to car stereo (I had to do this with X2; didn't have to with X1)
Items 1-7 are all freeware, although some may be hard to find.
That being said, this is Windows Mobile...so not a real big surprise that you'll have some issues. If you want real 'freedom' with your OS, ...this is what you'll need to work through. If you want trouble-free but vanilla computing, get an iPhone.

A note on SlideView: this is essentially an extension of their media panel from the X1. While being a frustrating and buggy piece of software as people say, ...it's slick as Hell. I mean, I don't want to delete it (or the whole panel interface). It's why I bought the phone. I just think it's ridiculous when people say, "Fix your X2 by deleting SlideView and all Panels". --Oh, Thanks for that.
Just understand: you do need to buy a standalone photo viewer (Resco is great), and if you can't learn to love Windows Media Player, then expect to buy something like Pocket Player. SlideView is great for a handful of files, but not if you want to spend a lot of time with it. By that time, it will generally have cataloged some file it didn't like and crashed.
SlideView is launched if you press the hardware panel button once; panels are called by pressing the same button twice in quick succession. This could be better. Especially if your phone happens to be bogging-down at the time, ...you might not get the desired result on the first try.
A note on MR2: The firmware includes the "Saturn" black/gold theme from SE, which totally changes the look of your WM6.5.3 interface. It is slick, and it smartly increases fonts in correct areas, while making WM look modern. MR2 however, does not make the X2 magically 'fast'.
And, I think robuash is talking about the type of fixes I listed above. You will need to spend time tweaking. As a matter of fact, after running since about Sept, ...it's about time for a reload from scratch to clean things up. When I have 8hrs to spare, I'll get around to it. (Maybe I'll take a day off from work sometime.)
Lastly, I think someone above mentioned memory. As opposed to the X1, internal memory is very limited on the X2. You have to be real creative how you install stuff, and install absolutely everything you possibly can on the SD card instead of the system. (This is also where SK Tools comes in handy, because it lets you 'move' programs between Card and System & back, even for some programs that don't give you a choice at install time.)
Also, once you dip below 20mb program memory in the phone, it tends to get real buggy. I'm just above that right now, but I've got LOADS of programs installed (creatively, on the SD card).

I too, been thinking about getting the X2 for a long time. But theyre still quite expensive (In my opinion). I've always loved sony ericsson phones. I had the X1 awhile ago, my first WinMo phone, paid $250 for it, I only buy full qwerty phones, but at the time, i was all crazy about the whole android thing and the X1's keyboard was already giving me issues (space bar and some letters registering twice) so i got really dissapointed and sold it.
Then finally got myself the motorola milestone which i loved, but after tweaking my X1 so much, i sort of got bored with android, but it was still a GREAT phone so i decided to keep it until a couple of months ago mainly because, unfortunately, the milestone i bought (from amazon) was not compatible with my carrier's 3G frequencies so i had to use EDGE all the time, slow as hell. So i sold it and and decided to go with the HTC fuze so i could try winmo again, paid $100 for one(used) and cool and stuff but it still didnt look as good as the milestone or the X1 (thick phone and the screen sucked compared to the X1 and milestone) so i looked up the X1 on ebay and bought one used for $100 too lol.
So now i have the X1 AGAIN and love it more than ever BUT, theres the keyboard and flex cable issue >< , plus, the keyboard isnt as comfortable as the fuze's. Anyways, it just seems like the X2 would be perfect for me at this time since it would basically be a X1 without the issues i just mentioned. The only problem is that they seem to cost $250/$350 on ebay. For that price i could get used phones with way better specs.
Also, im not sure about X2's current android development.

shure X2 can be made farely OK (but not GOOD) phone with a little work and help from our friends from XDA.
but just to reming you. this device when came out costed around 500€ ($600). at lunch (in january 2010) it had old CPU (qualcom msms 7200 came out in 2007, alot devices from 2008 had it) it also had only 265 MB RAM wich was already then to little.
it was slow and buggy at lunch and it still is now (last update in may 2010 i think thats only 4 months after release and that is liie saying your costumers F YOU).
for a phone that costed 500€ at lunch i can assume its high end phone. and some people assumed that and pay for this phone when it came out.
i have to point out that i got it for free in february 2010 and i still have a feeling of being cheeted. for that kind of money it shoud look great (that it does), feal good (typing on the qwerty is nice, but the touch is a joke, even x1 had better touch response but x1 screen was not secured as good as x2 is) and also it shoud WORK good, wich if we buy a phone that is assumed high end it should but x2 doesnt.
what kind of high end phone corupts data on SD card (jeah there is a SDFIX but some data deffinitly got lost before it was made. and that does not sounds like a high end phone) what kind of phone takes almost 1/2 hour to setup (after a hard reset) and then works so slowly that you have to hard reset every week (shure you can hardreset, and interupt the costumizatin to have clean WM6.5.3 and then install some staff by yourself to make it usable)?
if a costumer buys a product (and again 500€ for mobile phone means it should be a mean machine, a multimedia monster, not that it says [email protected] video then even on the QVGA the framerate is not totaly 30fps) that product should work without ours deletting the SE stuff hardreseting it, SD problem fixes, notification problem fixes, LED problem fixes, baterry problem fixes, killing a task in taskmanager freezes... the phone should work great out of the box for gods sake! are you that dumb! just a little comparison i have a X2, had HD2 (had to sell couse i urgently needed money (am deffinatly buying HD2 again), and again the X2 is such a ****ty phone nobody wants to buy so i had to sell HD2), and my friend has htc tattoo.
X2 costs almost like HD2 (x2 €500, hd2 €550 maybe €600 and im talking new phones at thair releases) x2 has the display resolution like HD2, has a very nice query that is great to type. but it has a cpu slover then tattoo (and those who sees 528MHz and think the cpus are the same, THEY ARE NOT. 7225 is newer then 7200 the 7225 it might not be alot faster but it isa little faster) and has the same amouth on RAM as tattoo (256MB). and at my mobile operator with contract X2 costed 300€ and tattoo costed 60€, tatoo at elast has android (donut is realy old now but back then it was fine). im a fan of WM 6.5.x but still on X2 some things, that work on others 6.5.X devices, doesnt work.
in short (not realy):
-price is high end,
-qwerty above average,
-touch is low end (its better with the stylus but average max)
i so miss the touchpad with up, down, left, and right butons from my X1.
-cpu/ram is the low end of smartfhones (already was low at relese in Jan 2010 if i tell you that tattoo came out in Sep 2009 and tattoo is a low range of samrthones)
-it has a high end display resolution (but combination of slow hardware and big display resolution isnt the best)
- it has stability problems (stability wise the phone isnt finished yet. it more feels like a beta tester unit) the SD gets corupted, killing tasks in task manager has a chance your device will freeze and the are then strange happenigh when making a call or reciving a call (not always but sometimes, at least 2x a week) and then people who you are calling or who is calling you is asking "hey man whats wron with your fency phone? is it broken already". and you know that its not broke its the software wich is not good.
the best part of SE programing is definitly the Phone program it runs great. its well finger optimized and the contact list is so fluid, has nice tabs and so on.
to say in one sentence. mediocre phone with good qwerty, slow hardware and a hefty price tag.
at the moment am using it just for mailing, and surfing the web on my wifi. for calling im using my 6 year old nokia 1600 at least nothing goes wrong with that one and the battery runs for 10-12 days.

im not 100% sure yet but after reading this whole thread im thinking of just fixing my xperia X1 (ribbon cable issue) and sticking with it rather than buying the X2

well X1 is more fun then X2 for shure. 6.5.3 is more finger friendly but the touch respond is not good with fingers (if X2 had capacitve display this would be a totaly diferent song). plus 6.1 that is on x1 is more functional. more stuff works as it should. alot of programers did not rewrite their apps for 6.5, 6.5.X so some apps have some truble here and there. spb shell (used 3.5.3, 3.5.5 runs to slow) in landscape on my X2 with 6.5.3 has some problems with hight and width. its not a big problem but its notiseble.
plus X1 has SE panel1 and 2 that i love. and the biggest plus in my opinion alot of roms to flash.
if i had a chance to swap X2 back for X1 i would. oh and if you get your X1 repared. and if you get sick of panels, spb shell, android, ubuntu... give a try to spb pocket plus wich i adored on my x1 its a nice small plugin for todayscreen. you have icons on the today screen, and nice tabs (7 max i think) and it looks realy nice. uses nice icons for everithing.
X2 might be OK to get if you get one totaly functionl and with no demage to the body for less then X1 will cost to get repared. but i dont think that is possible.

I see, thanks for your answer. Well, what about the X2 camera? i keep reading mixed reviews, some people say its garbage, others say its as good as the cybershot branded phones. How good is the camera in comparison with the X1?
And also the keyboard, thats the main reason i'd buy the X2, the camera would be a plus, IF its any good. But i guess those reasons alone arent enough for for me to spend $250 right now. I'd just save a bit more and buy a moto milestone or something.

I realize this is a month later, but if you (or someone) is wondering about the camera, you should know:
The X2 camera, while indeed being 8.1 mpxl ... only manages "2 mxpl" when in 16x9 mode. At least, this is how the menus describe it. On the X1, there was no distinction about a lower amount of mpxl's in-use when in 16x9 mode.
In reality, I'm not sure if this is truly a surprising bit of 'reversal' (where the older model is actually superior, albeit with a lower 'spec'), or if they just didn't 'publicize' the lower mxpl in the 16x9 mode on X1. --It does tend to put a 'bummer face' on you when you see that in the X2 camera menu.
Now, that being said ... I'd say that (however you shoot) the X2 camera is superior to the X1 in one very major way: lower compression. Although I took many a fine shot on my X1 ... the compression was pretty bad (especially on a city scene, etc. with a lot of varying detail & colors). The X2 shots have a more 'normal' look.
On the downside, the X2 seems to be more 'focus-finnicky', no matter what you do. You really need arms of steel to take a perfect shot on the X2 (and that was not the case on the X1, especially when using the 'motion mode' in the presets).
On the upside, I think the X2 produces better color balance in most lighting situations. I often take pictures of whiteboards at work after meetings. With the X1, I always needed to run pictures through varying levels of color-correction before sending-out, etc. I still do with X2, but to a lesser extent. Something with the contrast-balance is better so that lined text (like you have from board markers) maintains its quality. --This may again be another example in favor of X2 because of lesser-compression, actually.
So, it's a trade-off:
X2 'feels' like a much better camera (overall)
X1 is a little more solid/reliable, but less-potent & 'feels' more like a cellphone camera.
(There we go again. Yep, X2 is a sleek, upgraded phone, ...but with its share of quibbles.)

Desire HD: One-year review / my first year using Android

This is my attempt to review the phone after a year (and a bit) of use. It may seem pointless to review a phone that is at least a generation old, but I think what I have to say gives some insight into HTC as a manufacturer, and Android as a whole. These are also the sorts of things that can't be understood from using a phone for a few hours. I'll also cover Sense in part.
I'll start by listing everything that has annoyed or just disappointed me over the last 13 months.
Battery life
One of my major worries with Android as a whole (and by extension, all smartphones and the direction the market is heading): it is just not acceptable for a phone to not last a whole working day on moderate use (which for me is: about 2 hours web browsing and listening to music, a few text messages and emails). There are ways to avoid this happening (and the question should be, if users can do things to improve the battery, why don't they come out of the
factory that way?) but the fact is that a phone that requires the user to tinker extensively to get a day's reasonable use is not well designed. The trade-off is a thinner, lighter phone. Well, it's not worth it. Consumers are being hoodwinked into desiring crazy thin handsets before the technology is really there to support them. Ever-faster specs are the other side of this sorry tale. Phone software shouldn't need dual-core phones running at above 1Ghz, with 1gig of RAM. WP7 and iOS show this.
Build quality: I've had several serious problems caused by the hardware:
The battery cover - everyone knows about this. It is possible to remove it, and reinstall it, but it's difficult - and it just shouldn't be. That's all there is to it.
Volume rocker - the poor arrangement of the battery cover and the volume rocker meant that when I tried to pull off the battery cover, I broke off the top half of volume rocker. Luckily it still holds on and the volume control still works, but again - not good enough. The fact that there are packages of replacement volume rockers complete with the needed tools on Ebay show this is not limited to me and my clumsiness.
USB port - for no obvious reason, and very suddenly, the USB/charger port stopped working properly - no power was going to the phone. The main board and so the whole until had to be replaced. I'd not been rough with the connection. Which lead to...
GPS. One of my biggest disappointments. Although it worked reasonably well to begin with, when my internals were replaced because of the USB port failure, the internals must have been from the batch with the poorly connected GPS module. Everyone knows about this issue by now. I never ever ever get any GPS signal, no matter where I am or what the weather's like. Yes there are solutions, none of which worked for me, and I couldn't bare to be without my handset for another 7-14 days to get it repaired. Very poor.
HTC Sense
I've not found Sense to have any additional functionality that make it worth the resource overhead on top of Android. Really the only useful thing it does is linking contacts between my contacts and Facebook and Twitter (though this brings it's own problems, for instance forcefully importing a friend's outdated phone number from Facebook without giving me the option to choose the stored number instead). I've never been able to use the default Android calendar app because the Sense one replaces it, and I don't like the Sense one at all, it's quite unintuitive.
I find the extra chrome is not especially attractive, and doesn't make efficient use of space. It looks very mid-late 00s. So dumping Sense was one of the first things I did, first in favour of ADW Launcher and lately GO Launcher, for it's superb and beautiful widgets.
HTCSense.com - I've nearly forgotten what it did. Suffice to say, none of the services were useful enough or reliable (they didn't work at all for the first few months) to keep me coming back.
General Android issues
Music playing
There are many brilliant music-playing programs for Android. I've happily paid for two that I love using (PowerAmp and PlayerPro). Sadly, four years in, the experience of getting music onto an Android phone lags behind iPhone fundamentally. Spotify subscribers will call me a dinosaur for caring about this, but for those of us with large mp3 collections that they like to change up on their phones regularly, it's an unhappy experience. blogs would have you believe the iTunes/iPhone experience can be replicated, but my experience is that this just isn't true.
To give an overview of the problem (for anyone thinking of coming to Android and hoping to use their phone for playing music), here's my experience of using several Windows music management apps, and their limitations as a solution for managing Android devices.
DoubleTwist - marketed as iTunes for Android - laughable, and crushingly disappointing: ignoring slow performance and instability, not finding all files, misreading mp3 tags, all DoubleTwist does is sync a playlist to the phone (over Wi-Fi if you pay the upgrade). If you use iTunes, it will sync any playlist that you create in iTunes - but does anyone want to install iTunes if it's just to transfer music? I hate having it on my system. The main failing is that it has no easy way to select tracks to be transferred - they have to be added to a playlist. Unlike iTunes, you cannot tick or untick songs from the main library. If you want to remove a song from your phone, you have to find and then remove it from the appropriate playlist. Which is far more time consuming. No developers of music management software for Windows seem to understand this. The same problem applies to Winamp, Songbird, MediaMonkey, all of which I've tried and none of which work as well as iTunes does for iPods. All have various bugs or limitations (Winamp won't let you browse the syncing playlist by artist/album, only letting you edit the sync list as a great big long list, does a really poor job of finding artwork and lyrics. But the wifi sync option is very cool, if slightly pointless. Songbird is still unstable after years of development and has enduring problems with recognising tags.)
So far the best option is MediaMonkey, which is fast, stable and has some brilliant additional functions even in it's free version. It does allow you to browse tracks stored on the phone by artist and album which makes it easier to remove tracks, but doesn't give the selecting tracks from the main library option that iTunes has. Also, CD-ripping is only available in the paid version ($40).
Ideally I'd like to see Google develop or encourage the development of an iTunes equivalent media manager for Android phones on Windows that would do the simple job of syncing music easily, effectively, and without bugs! However this would go against their ambitions for getting everyone to to everything (including music) through the cloud, so I don't have much hope.
Another small issue I've got with music on Android is that the system's music management library doesn't recognise the album artist tag on music files. This means that when browsing music in any application by artist, compilations are split out into each artist. This makes for a messy library. I want the option to have all compilations combined under the 'Various Artists' name - simple to implement, but only possible by recognising the album artist tag.
Android Market
A constant source of irritation to me is a couple of bugs in the Market. The first of these is automatically starting updates which stall before downloading starts, requiring you to long-press and cancel, and then manually re-start each of the updates. Tedious. The other major problem is that about 1/3 to 1/2 the time, completed downloads will fail to install, often repeatedly. No idea. It works eventually, so it's not an issue of compatibility. Aggravating.

I have had the DHD for a year too and came from a Iphone and I agree with some of your issues.
Battery life: For me at first I was having to charge at sometimes 1 or 2 in the afternoon >< but now I get to midnight often with 50% charge if i have been using lightly, a day with some gaming music and calls its 15% 20% left this is around 11 when i normally goto bed and put it on charge so battery life is ok for me now (I am on stock sense rom 2.3 something, the latest one)
The GPS been flaky really annoys me sometimes taking 3 4 minutes to get one Sat, makes hoping in the car and getting directions something you have to add 5 minutes to your journey for.
Build Quality has been fine for me, but I have not opened really since i put in my SD card and it's been in a clear gel case with protector since day 1 so looks immaculate. I think the GPS issue is a design flaw.
HTC sense is ok, I only use a couple of their widgets but yea it's not really that useful and can be replicated with many things often free from the market.
Android music players: At first coming from Itunes I liked the fact I could add a new song with drag and drop but in retrospect its better to have a database driven system like itunes for organizing music and playlists means you end up with your music nicely organised tagged and searchable.
The market i have had no issues with really (Though IOS apps are overall slicker than Android still, though Android has caught up in a few now)
I think Android looks really promising with ICS and will finally root and put a Rom on once one is hacked on the Desire HD.
Overall the handset has been nice and I like been able have live wallpapers and change themes with things with different launchers, the Iphone got boring from a OS perspective whereas Android you can change everything and seem like you have a new phone.
Now for the gotcha...I solved all my Android & HTC problems by getting a Samsung Omnia 7 16gb WP7 I have had both phones now concurrently for 8 months and the WP7 is my everyday phone since about 3 weeks into buying it, but I have the desire HD with a backup sim in it and carry that too.
It lasted all day from day one on a charge and I found the OS to do everything I needed without any tweaking, that been social networking, syncing with google calendar, making calls, listening to my music and surfing the web on the go. (I am not really a phone gamer, maybe play the odd puzzle game like jems or something.)
It's a bit like the iphone I guess everything just kind of works with no tweaking but it looks different and you can actually make your home screen look really nice and personal with live tiles of your photos news feeds etc. And Zune I love its a really cool looking desktop client, it checkerboards album art when you play music and my phone wirelessly syncs any new music when its on charge over night (though PC has to be on ofc) I would never go back to drag and drop into folders now. WP7 has its quirks and annoyances too but I think it does the things I need better.
I still love Android though and may get the Galaxy Nexus, However will wait and see the reviews, if Android still has jerky lag scrolling and the random stutters on the homescreens and in browser will wait until next gen, hopefully though they have got the accelerated GUI working well enough, and it looks a lot nicer seems much more integrated from the demos I have seen less hodgepodge than it currently is.
It's great to have three different phone OSes to be able to choose from, currently its not looking like one will get a monopoly like MS did with windows so hopefully we can continue to have some choice and variety for years to come which also drives innovation which means better experiences for us the users!

I gave up with it
I eventually gave up with my HD a couple of weeks ago. The phone, as you wrote, has some strengths and some (serious) weaknesses.
The battery is awful. I stated that the first week I got it -- and the deniers said it was fine. It's not. It's crap. And seriously harms the device.
The phone is also heavy. If that sounds dumb, it's not when your hand is tired holding the damn thing for 45 minutes.
And, after a while, the phone lags badly. Only a complete reset fixes this.
The camera is also so-so, and slow as Hell. Video recording is poor and jerky.
Fortunately, there is a cure to all of these problems -- the Samsung Galaxy S2.

I've had my DHD for about 6 months now coming from a TyTN II on WinMob 6.0 which I still have. This one is miiiiiiiiles ahead. I agree that the major put-off with the DHD is the battery and I don't care how much freaking tweaking one does, it SUX!!!! I don't get a full day of moderate use at all. I am constantly plugging it in to charge. This seems to be a common Android device problem. Battery technology just has not kept up with the rest.
That being said, I am happy with most everything else. I love my music and I use Mortplayer. I love to be able to just plug my phone into my laptop via USB and just copy and delete music at my leisure. This goes for videos, series, movies etc.
I have the best apps I believe for my various needs. I will elaborate on this a little later.
I dumped SENSE!!! I have been using GO Launcher for the last 3 or 4 months. I love it! I also only use Live Wallpaper.
My GPS is great. I have had no issues at all. I get a lock indoors in an average of about 20 seconds flat. I have made no alterations or mods whatsoever. My phone is stock, unrooted etc. Don't fix it if it aint broke!

I must say i haven't had many if any of the above issues, build quality is solid as a rock for me, phone been dropped a few times works perfectly well...
Sim cover did tend to be a pain to get off when i first got the phone, but i learned to pull it off by holding the sides of the cover and just gently pulling down.
The Volume rocker does suck, i don't think there's any debate here. You actually have to physically see the screen in order to know you've changed the volume level because it's not tactile whatsoever.
Battery life isn't as bad as people make out. Especially with custom roms, i can have 3 hours screen time and still last the full day in standby without my battery dying.
Camera performs quite well with the right settings as hamdir has demonstrated in his guide.
Overall i'm pleased with the DHD it's not perfect no, but for a year old smartphone it's got plenty of life left in it.

Ok... let's start with Music. The desire hd audio chip sucks. Period. My HD2 kicks its ass all over the place. Still... what you describe as a DHD problem with music sync etc, is present on most if not all Android devices. We only have mass storage.
Now, i do use MediaMonkey... but not the Free or Paid version. I downloaded the latest Beta4 and it manages my 180gb of mp3/ogg/flac/wav/ape whatevah. It syncs what i want and converts on the fly (why would i use FLAC on a cellphone?)
As for battery, with my DHD it lasts 2 days with very moderate use, but 3G always on, 2 google acounts, facebook, etc etc. Wifi is kept on, and when i arrive home, it connects to my wifi at it's own pleasure.
Battery door: Battery is not mean to be removed/inserted all that much. My DHD lasts months without a restart, so i don't see why you should need to remove that as often.
Volume rocker: Due to the above probably, it's still in it's place.
GPS: On this one i'll have to agree... it sucks. That plastic cover on the back is a issue, so much that a homemade fix is necessary.
As for the necessity of dual cores and so what... There really no NEED. We don't NEED this. We were fine with those dumb phones back in the Nokia Black/Green day.
As we want more, we need more... more processing power.
Now, i've used WP7 and iPhone. Lets not compare. WP7 is limited has hell. What it does, it does well. But it suffers for the same as iPhone. It need Zune to make it worth it. iPhone need iTunes. Who the hell designs a cellphone that requires a computer ?
So... please drop the comparision between WP7/iOS with Android. Yes, what they do, they do better than Android. But they do so little.. so so little..

For me 1st year is just getting over today. This phone is awesome, I came from Symbian UIQ3 (W960i) phone. Actually I blindly chosen this phone due to Android+Dolby+HTC. But now am very happy with this decision. I had battery issues and GPS problems, but thanks to XDA devs all these gone over time. I will keep this phone till it dies.

My brother has one and frankly I wouldn't swop my DHD for it ......EVER!!!!
After the DHD I will get another HTC. I am on my third HTC now.
I have seen Sony-Fricssions, Samdungs, (actually the proper name is SAMpple), and frankly HTC is still tops as far as build quality, etc. goes.
What can I say.....I luv me DHD!!!!
BTW, how on earth do people get 2 days without charging? Maybe flashing roms? but I don't want to do this.
The audio on my DHD is actually quite good. I use Equalizer and Volume Ace with Moboplayer and Mortplayer. I have an in-ear Phillips headset and the sound is maybe not the best but it is certainly good. Bass and loudness & clarity is actually quite good on mine. My family complains that my phone is too loud! hehehehehehe

Why do people keep whingeing about the battery life...its a smartphone...what more do you need to know...I've had a few of them...they are ****e,the galaxy s lasts about an he longer,look at this way,if your on the laptop plug it in...you got a sky hd box..plug it ...any device with a USB stick it in ..if your battery goes down to quick you can tweak it to be fair,in general though it just is accepted...the iPhones are even worse!
Htc sense is quality in my opinion,I've tried roms without and didn't gel,I like the DHd it still isn't old in my eyes

Nice review there. Honestly, I agree with the first few points of TS regarding the battery, Sense and GPS.
For the battery, its also the major setback I noticed when I got this phone. It's not crappy, its utter bulldung. But hey, due to the battery prob forces me to snoop around and found my love, ROM flashing! It's a mixed blessing I guess. Without the battery prob, I wouldn't stubble upon the amazing devs at XDA. as for the battery prob, it lasts for me through the day, an hour of music, Bluetooth headphone connected, a little mail, text and 10 minutes call max got me through the whole day.. all that is possible with a little thing called flashing. It does improve battery life. Period.
Sense.. hmm.. no idea, skipped the whole marketing thing.. sense location and what not. What ONLY like about sense is that u call silence a call by flipping it over, or turn into a blowhorn during a conversation with the same method. Lol. But other then that, its not much about to bother look let alone try.
GPS... Hmmm... First few locks are slow.. sure. But hey, nothing like rooting, flashing CWM GPS.zip can't handle..
Finally.. its a beautiful phone.. albeit its weakness in some areas. It's like a classic car, few chinks here and there, but with a little personalized tweaking, it'll be your phone indeed. I cherish it more than any other phones I had cause its me in an aluminum shell... It's a great phone. And I'm a happy owner.
Ps: want a phone that last a week? Get a Nokia 3210. Lol.

Well... Google Music works fine. I bet it does, i can't have it yet. Not here on my country anyway. But i can have iTunes.
I don't like iTunes. To be honest, iTunes is everything i HATE on a media manager.
But, it has a advantage that GMusic does not. iTunes does not store your entire collection on the cloud. I have 180gb+ of media... this makes Google Music a "no no" for me.

With DHD being my first smartphone, I really didn't have much expectations of it. I just bought it then because the HD7 was still unavailable. Sense rocks. Sure the stock eventually grew very laggy, Messages does not send messages.. But hey, that's what Android Market is for.
Eventually tried rooting and flashing custom ROMs, and hell yeah, I think I may well use it for, if time allows, still another year. In the internal side, I find nothing wrong with it. It's not like it's gonna replace my computer or anything. At this point, I kinda appreciate Sense, especially Sense 3.5, the UI is just perfect, and the Beats Audio works well at default compared to how PowerAMP does. Equalizer app makes it more perfect.
The build quality for me is kinda mixed. We gotta love the metal casing. But the detachable plastic parts, they're questionable. I also bought the phone with the power keys in a deeper position than advertised out of the box, which at the time I was unaware, so it's kinda takes more effort to press it.
Just around five months ago, the volume rocker somehow broke off and fell somewhere while I was walking home. I usually joke with my friends that DHD comes with a stylus.. a toothpick for pressing the volume lol. The h and t in the htc logo behind the phone got lost as well. I can only see the shining c with holes on the h and t lol.
But, given that the phone fell on the road with a strong impact once, fell in a pail full of water once while having a call, and ran against the rain with it once, and that my phone is still alive, I guess I like it. The mic's busted though.
I think I gotta bring this baby to the hospital, er the service centre one of these days. I still love it today. Custom ROMs rejuvenate it. )

Almost all the issues are caused by the alluminum body. You can't have a handheld radio device with metal casing that doesn't have some plastic parts to embed the antenna. Well, actually you can, but then you'll have to expose the antenna and explain to the users that they are holding the device the "wrong" way. But having the metal body has one great advantage over plastic - with proper care it still looks as good as new. I have mine DHD for little over a year and it's like brand new. And the only protection it has against the elements (including my two kids) is just the stock screen protector. I love that feature so much that it was one of the two things that drove me in the direction of choosing acer a500 for a tablet. And I seriously can't understand all the people complaining about the battery life. Mine lasts two days with normal usage and can easily last a workday with moderate to heavy usage. And if you don't have any access to a power source / usb plug near your workplace, I somehow doubt that your work requirements involve spending 8 hours playing with your phone . And I'm on a rooted stock 2.3.3 ROM with no battery tweaks whatsoever. Actually I pluged my phone yesterday for an hour while having lunch (that could not charge the battery completely) and 30 hours later I'm on 20%. True - I didn't use it that much (maybe 20 minutes talking on the phone) but it's still what should be expected of a smartphone. BTW iPhone4 battery life is worse despite it's tiny screen and limited functionality and I hear 4s is even worse.

Why? Because it's not satisfactory, that's why. Do you not understand the concept of a review?
Why do you even have a mobile phone if you never leave the house/office? If you're happy to stay plugged in all the time, why not just use your laptop for computing etc and a landline for phone calls? You do realise that smartphones are meant to be mobile too, don't you?

Seriously? Seriously, try reading my post again. As I described, I don't get the same performance as you. Clearly lots of other people have the same problem. I don't know why this is, but it doesn't stop it being a fact. What's not to understand? Do you think I'm making up my experience for fun, or something?

I didn't realise there was anyway to access Google Music in the UK yet - I'm going to give it a try out of curiosity, but... continuously drain my battery and be dependent on a decent signal? No thanks. I'm really still not convinced cloud storage of music and video is the way forward at present in general. Plus the Google Music app is pretty bare bones and it doesn't seem possible to play music downloaded from Google Music in other music apps.
I'm not obsessed with iTunes, it's just really good for syncing music to portables. My point was that there's no decent equivalent for Android phones.
