Getting 3G and voice on a Tmobile Tab [Updated Nov 22,2010] - Galaxy Tab General

What I'm running:
Tmobile Tab with Euro firmware and Simple Mobile SIM (Uses Tmobile's infrastructure)
AT&T Tab with Euro firmware and an AT&T SIM from my Nexus One
This what I know:
The Euro radio.bin allows voice calls but not 3G internet, just EDGE
The Tmo US radio.bin allows 3G internet but no voice calls
The Bell Canada radio.bin allows only 2G, no 3G and no voice calls
The Vibrant T959UVJK2 radio allows voice and 2G internet but: when going through the service menu it allows selecting 1700/2100 WCDMA.
Edit:
1700 is the correct choice for AWS 1700/2100 FDD IV band.
2100 is for Europe FDD I band only.
It looks as if its trying to use UMTS instead of AWS in that state, so it never gets a 3G lock. Its close though.
Edit: AWS is UMTS-FDD Band IV, so the reference to UMTS is valid.
We need more AWS based radio.bin files! The Vibrant is AWS, so whats making it not use UTMS? Perhaps the country code. Originally mine was KOR, now I'm hacked to XEU, perhaps we need to be TMB? Whats the code on a Tmobile Vibrant?
Edit: Naa, its just the radio, the AT&T success pretty much proves it.
Conclusion:
We need a capable radio.bin. Would someone from Samsung please leak one to me
AFAICT, only the original US radio.bin is capable of activating the hardware for the 3G circuitry on a Tmobile Tab.
The AT&T Tab gets 3G by using the radio from an i9000, which hasn't been distributed in an AWS band version.
Everyone: Keep your eye out for new Samsung AWS compatible phones and firmware.
Notes:
I have flashed many Vibrant and Captivate radio.bin files, all work as well as the European ones.
I can flash new radio.bin files right from my Tab over adb using redbend_ua so goodbye to Odin and Windows, whoo!
Don't drink and flash! I spent 4 hours unbricking my Tab because I got cocky with redbend_ua. So don't try flashing the factoryfs.rfs while you're still running your Tab from the factoryfs.rfs
How I use it (properly):
Code:
#copy redbend_ua to /sdcard, install redbend from adb shell
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/stl9 /system
cp /sdcard/redbend_ua /system/xbin/
redbend_ua restore /sdcard/modem.bin /dev/block/bml12
The redbend_ua flash memory writer app:
View attachment redbend_ua.zip
The most useful radio.bin files:
View attachment modem-eurotab-jk5.bin.zip
View attachment modem-tmobile.bin.zip
View attachment radio-vibrant-JK2.bin.zip
WARNING! If you make a typo and flash the wrong area of block memory, like say bml1, don't cry to me if your device is trashed!
I would like to get various Vibrant radio dumps if someone would be so kind to do so. The command from adb shell is:
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/bml12 of=/sdcard/bml12.dump bs=4096
Lets discuss what we've tried in this thread.
Misc notes:
I screwed up my Tab flashing a rebuilt firmware based off the US dumps. I screwed up the Tab, no boot. I re-flashed JK5, no luck, it just hung/vibrated at the Samsung logo. I went into recovery, and saw an error about the dbdata partition, so I grabbed JJ4, found dbdata.rfs in one of the tar.md5 files, pulled it out, tarred it, then flashed it alone in Odin. Bam! It booted back up!

Chat:
I'm going to hang out on #galaxytab since its quiet there. If you just need clarification on something, ask me there. I know everyone is getting confused with all the SIM/Band/US/Euro/ROM combinations. That will hopefully end soon.

good idea for this thread, there are 2 other threads out there and looking over both of them to get an answer is a pain, hopefully we can get everyone together on this thread alone to get better results.

Hi,roto i got the euro model of the tab using simplemobile like you, is there a way for me to get 3g working? Or do we have to wait for someone like yourself an advance user to make something for it.

no one has been able to get the 3g to work at the moment, roto is trying to get the Rogers/Bell/AT&T/Asian radio.bin to see if can work around it, so just sit back and wait and keep checking the forum.

You said you have the euro model meaning its a European tab?
if so you can just pop in a att sim card and you will have phone plus 3g

You wont ever get 3g working with Simple Mobile with European hardware. But, you may get 3g if you switch to AT&T or H2O. Keep us posted.

I just got my Tab from T-Mobile. I popped in my voice/data sim from my Blackberry and data works on 3G(Normal?).
Next thing is to drop the ROM before I do anything to it.
roto, do I have to root in order to drop the ROM?
I will use the instructions you gave me here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9266166&postcount=177
I will edit this post with my updates.

Yes i do get 3G using my girl AT&T sim card, but as you all know that At&T plans are expensive and that's one of the reason i got out of my iphone4 contract and got with simplemobile · but believe it or not the speed of EDGE on simplemobile is not that bad.maybe is because the phone is fast or the browser i don't know, but my speed was much shower on AT&T 3G lol.

The latency on Simple Mobile (T-Mobile) is half of that on AT&T, so it feels almost as good as 3G. Basically, now that I can compare, AT&T isn't as good as I once thought.
The dealer I got my Simple Mobile SIM from also carried H2O, which is similarly priced.
I was In Manhattan last week, was in a coffee shop with 5 bars on H (Nexus One AT&T) and It took over a minute to complete a simple Google search, it just kept hanging.

do i have to unlock the phone first before putting euro rom on it or vice versa
also i was following your instructions on unlocking
got root explorer copy efs folder to sd card
got hex editor from market
pulled the file into hex editor
but i cant find 0x180069
is it almost at the bottom andis there an easier way to find it rathr then just scrolling through the whole thing

No, you only unlock if you need to use a different carriers SIM.
From the menu, use "Jump To Address" and put in 180000

ok thanks for the quick reply

Haven't got one yet. If it doesn't allow for dialing, it won't matter anyway. I'm working on creating my own custom radio.bin right now.

Tmobile 3G on International Edition (GT-P1000)

I am testing the International Edition of the Samsing Tab (GT-P1000, with the phone functionality built in out-of-the-box and the white backplate). Here in the US, when I insert an AT&T SIM card I get 3G speeds (peaked at 6 MB downstream recently), but when I insert a Tmobile SIM card I seem to only get EDGE speeds (not 3G, around 0.1 MB downstream). The Tmobile SIM card works at 3G speeds on another phone, so I know it's not he SIM card. I can get voice calls on both Tmobile and AT&T with no problem.
Does the International Edition (GT-P1000) have the US 3G Tmobile bands?
Any input is welcome, thanks.

Welcome to the fray. Grab a beer and get comfy... because the Euro version does not play with TMobile's 3G network in the US.
If you are technically inclined, it seems we could use some more hands trying to figure out a fix for this issue.

The T-Mobile Tab does not have the hardware to support European 3G bands... That's why I believe the euro firmware people are flashing only works for voice/edge on T-Mob...
That would make sense that the International (Euro) version does not have US Tmobile 3G bands... it makes me wonder if the limitation is in the hardware or software.
Do we have any indication that the limitation is in the software, other than the fact that a US Tmobile version exists?

I am certainly no authority on any of this, but this looks to be incorrect. From my reading of the posts on this issue... the Euro version of the Tab (specifically, its modem.bin file) isn't set to work with TMobile's 3G network as the that network operates on a frequency that isn't used in Europe.
User rotohammer looks to have the most knowledge on what it is going to take to make this happen -- but keep in mind that most of us have TMobile Tabs and are needing a solution with that fact in mind. The general thought was that we could use the firmware from a Euro version to give us voice-calling capability, and then hack-in support for TMobile's 3G network.
sheesh, I wish I would have paid attention in school because I want to be a bit more useful with all of this.

According to what I have figured Out....it disappointed me too, But!!
GT-P1000 is not capable of running 3G Tmobile network
The Hardware CPU, Radio Chip...is capable and is switchable to the band of 1700/2100 MHZ.
The Radio Amplifier is not Capable of 1700/2100 MHZ bands....so us who have International Version of the Tab is Screwed!!!
The proof = I flashed my GT-P1000 using Tmobile Modem to switch and ENABLE 1700/2100....I can only have Edge+Voice...when I flash to T849 modem....the Tab gives No Signal
if the GT-P1000 was capable of handling 1700/2100 Bands easily then my Tab should do 3G only by using T849 TMobile Tab modem Bin
I am a google nooby and is doing what I could....those are what I found out...seem like I have to sell my GT-p1000 Soon.
Or switch to at&t and 3g & voice work

This is the only way...yeah...wait til TMobile release Phone + data on tab...or switch to ATT
The international version and the ATT tab is about the same....the 1700 mhz band is shot out.....
Samsung exclusively included 1700 for US tmobile just as they exclusively make cdma tab for the sprint and verizon.......
No hope....m selling mine, or return to the place i bought from and lose 200 usd
****If buying this tab for phone call and edge only***** I rather go for the Ipad 2 or Iphone 5 in a few months
US tmobile have a unique stupid bands on their 3G....and all of the phones or tabs they have suck monkey *****....
Hi everyone I was reading Motohammers post in the developers form about being able to get 3G on a GT-P1000.
My question is this... It's my friends tab and I am not able to get 3G at all. He doesn't care about being able to use the phone, but would like to use 3G data if he is out of wifi.
info in the tab:
firmware= 2.2
baseband= P1000XXJHA
Kernel ver= 2.6.32.9
[email protected] #1
build number= FROYO.XXJMA
I followed Rotohammers T-Mobile Modem Switcher, but am getting
stderr: Unable to chmod /data/local/tmp/
redbend_ua: No such file or directory
stderr: /data/local/tmp/redbend_ua: not found
I followed the directions exactly and still no go... followed another guys post to install files on the internal sd card and still can't get 3G to come up no matter what.
The SIM card I am using is from a Galaxy Captivate S with voice and Data (6gig plan) on Rogers....
Any ideas?
Thanks very much!
M.
@fishguyis
Have you tried flashing a Rogers modem? At the end of your post you say you are using a voice/data sim on Rogers, not sure if you have tried this or if it will even work but as far as I know if you flash a modem that doesn't work you just won't have a signal, and you can just flash back to a modem with signal, if you got the modem switcher working and you just don't get a signal or if you only get edge, most of the time you can rename another modem to match roto's modem name in the switcher and swap the modem you want to flash with the modem that roto includes with the switcher, like if you want to try a Rogers modem just rename it to match and swap with roto's included 3g modem, I hope that is not to confusing I can't think of any other way to explain it, I hope this helps in anyway and I hope you get it working.

let me know if that helps you. as of right now my modemswitch folder is still located in my internal memory and i can switch back and forth easily.
edit- didnt see that u did this already. umm try to do it a few times. last night it wasnt switching for me.. so i charged the tab all the way up, switched my wifi off and did it again this morning and it switched for me..

i must say the euro tab is nice and the 3g works good, i was video chatting earlier with no lag and even hit H speeds, not sure the big difference between 3g and H tho.
oh yeah my sim was from my tmo vibrant/g2 so it seems like we have the same set up, just dont understand why you are getting that error.

I am not sure if this makes a difference but the GT is from Bell Mobility and if I go to "wireless/network", "mobile Networks", network mode, I get GSM/WCDMA (auto mode)
GSM only

Does that mean there is no 3G available at all?

[Q] Telstra Galaxy Tab

Hey guys
I have one of the Telstra Galaxy Tabs, and basically want to work a few things out with it.
First off I gather, with mention of all the carrier-specific or gsm/CDMA Specific ROMs, this has something to do with a radio or some such being included?
The Telstra "Next G" Network, which the Tab is used on, is basically 3g on 850mhz. Which of the types would this come under?
I have "Some" experience with flashing/ROMs/etc, namely on my Desire, so I am no expert by any means (Defo wanting to learn, and have learnt a lot from here so far ) but I do have a small amount of experience.
Thanks guys.
So, the community round here will answer questions for people that have obviously not bothered to search and ask the same stupid crap over and over and over, yet someone who has done a LOT of research, and is legitimately confused over a terminology issue (because technically it ISNT GSM or CDMA if you learn how the networks actually work) and just wants a simple answer to a simple question, just gets totally ignored?
Great to see guys, Great to see.
850 would be like att
Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA App
GSM radio hardware is largely irrelevant, the hardware does the heavy lifting, the firmware doesn't care that it is, as long as it supports the right protocols.
Telstra uses a GSM/HSDPA/WCDMA network. In most cases, this is the case if your device has a SIM card.
The Tab sold here is essentially the standard UK version. If Telstra has an 850/2100Mhz HSDPA version then that could potentially be different. If you can root it using SuperOneClick, then run a complete firmware backup and try updating with another GSM firmware (e.g. RotoHammers JME) and see how you go. Before doing so, check that the device is unlocked, check if it can be rooted, determine the existing firmware/modem versions and the CSC version. It may be a custom firmware, it may not.
Your "LOT of research" was obviously fairly deficient if it hadn't ruled out Telstra using a CDMA network. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telstra

Well, The network you are referencing is actually the "Telstra 3g" Network used only in the capital cities around here. The network my Tab is used on/made for is the "Next G" Network. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_G is the specific network. As you can see, it is technically not GSM at all, it is UMTS, and actually replaced our old CDMA network. So, this is where my confusion was coming in. But, if I have this correct, it is used as a basic term, meaning GSM = Sim Card and CDMA = No Sim Card (like our old CDMA network, phone itself is coded to the number/network type thing, which to be honest I didn't realise still even existed) yeah?
Cheers for clearing that up
As for the freqs, if I do a *#2263# the 3 WCDMA bands that are starred are 850mhz 1900mhz and 2100mhz. The GSM Fallback shows GSM 850 GSM 900 DCS 1800 PCS 1900 all starred. (Yes I did realise this before, I explained why I was confused with the terms hehe) The main band I have to worry about really is 850mhz though, on the WCDMA side, as you would have seen from the link.
Well, the device can be rooted with Z4Root at least, that is what I have used to root the device. This is exactly what I intend to try, once I am sure I understand everything. Does not hurt to read and re-read until one is definately comfortable with the steps, and I like to understand what every part is that I am doing.

Hey mate, i have a telstra tab, on original firmware (jj3 i think) i would only ever get 3g..
After flashing rotos jme + the phone.bin, i now get hspa most the time.
Rotos firmware works perfectly, but as always backup everything

Just to be 100% sure, that is the one here? And you are on the Next G Network? (I assume so with the 850mhz band etc, I thought this would work, but doesn't hurt to be sure I am looking at the right one you are talking about hehe.)
I can confirm the original firmware is JJ3, with phone calling capabilities etc.
Of course, backups always come first, always.
Thank you heaps for the info.
Also, if there is any part of this device's firmware etc that would be helpful in any way to the devs, I would be happy to extract anything needed from a rotobackup or whatever. I won't be flashing it straight away, and definately not before a full backup anyway.
(edit:spelling)
HI mate, how did you go with the flash?
I'm thinking of doing this as well, but just want to see if anybody has noticed any difference (for the better that is).
I have n Australian telstra tab on the next g network, and flashing a rom was the best thing I ever did

Hey, not trying to hijack this thread, although I too just got a SGT for the wife from Optus this morning and playing around with it and keen to hack.
Mine came with the following
PDA : P1000XWJJ4
PHONE : P1000XXJID
CSC : P1000OPSJJ3
Build Time : 2010.10.16 20:35:06 KST
Changelist : 639474
Firmware 2.2
Kernel Version : 2.6.32.9
Keen to know what is the best rom for us here down under, i'm, off to root me SGT.
Cheers
Kosti
For the optus tab any euro rom will work i started with the modaco rom and kernal then moved to the overcome rom and kernal. Both ran prefectly just make a backup to be safe.

buying a european tmobile galaxy tab

hi everyone, im buying a tmobile galaxy tab, the euro model, i want the phone and 3g to work..
i have a g2 right now and plan on using my tmobile sim[has data/voice]
will i be able to use the tab as a phone and have 3g with my sim? sorry if theres a thread on this but ive google searched and xda searched and cant find my answer.. thanks
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896932
I followed the above link to get my G1 T-Mobile SIM working on my tab.
As far as buying a euro-based tab to get 3g and phone usage, I don't think that will work. I will assume you are in the States. And from what I understand, it has to do with the technology in the infrastructure used in the States.
Buying a euro-based tab will do the same as buying a us-based tab and flashing a euro-based rom (if you are in the States). Your phone will only work over 2g. It really isn't a big deal, just grab Roto's modem switcher.
Euro tmob <> US tmob. U wont get us tmob 3g

thank you. is this something that can be a possibility in the future[voice,3g,euro tab]?? i will install the modem switcher when im done putting this new rom on.. edge is pretty horrible but the phone calling is cool..
also if i have the modem switched to 3g on, will people be able to still call me ??
Anything is possible with open-source. Besides, look at how much has been accomplished in the short amount of time since the tabs release. I am just happy with the nice roms developed so far and the fact we can talk. Give it some time.
When you are on 3g, the phone functionality is basically dead. With that being said, Roto's modemswitcher is a nice little script.
Euro Tab can not be used with Tmobile 3G network....even with 3G only....it will only does 2G+Voice
I have one, and I am regret having it......no way to turn on the band frequencies of 1700 and 2100 together....for a moment I thought I was successfully did 1700 and 2100.....but no, I did not......when I went into detail of the modem, it said (900 mhz band) not 1700...
You can never get 1700 on any Samsung Tab beside the Tmobile one. I think I am switching to ATT real soon
3g works great for me thu..im even getting h also..just got to flash to overcomes kernel and rom den use roto..my tab is def international my charger is weird as hell lol(euro plug)

After Everything I have tried. I believe that your Tab is a Tmobile Tab.....If it is, It will say Tmobile in the front and the back of the Tab....also the model is
SGH T849
The European one is the Model of GT-P1000....and there is no Mark of Tmobile or any Carriers in it....You must have been mistaken.....Even Rotohammer Confirmed that the European Is not Capable of Tmobile 3G....or Please send me your pictures ?
For your confirmation on Rotohammer saying that ...here

Your device saying GT-P1000 is because u installed the Rom of GT-P1000 to enable 2G+voice. Tmobile on the back is the evidence of the Tab being from Tmobile
Samsung made it Exclusively for Tmobile with a special Tmobile Radio Amplifier.......The international version is what I have now......it Can not be on Tmobile 3G network

Weak signal-Do I have a bad Note

I just got my Note yesterday and configured the APN settings for Straight Talk (AT&T sim) according to the instructions in another thread. According to the AT&T coverage viewer, my house is in a 3G area but where I work, the whole area shows "4G". However, I was getting HSPA+ at home and in the area that is supposed to be 4G, I'm only getting Edge.
I wonder if I have a bad Note because my signal strength never gets better than -101dB no matter where I am.
Anyone got any troubleshooting ideas?
Me too..but after i rooted my note,, its better than i used stock rom........

Are you saying it got worse after you rooted your phone? Mine is rooted.
I assume you have the international unlocked version? That version does not support 4G; only ATT branded US version of Galaxy Note does. Also, even though Straight Talk uses ATT towers they do not provide 4G to customers. I think your connection is fine. Enjoy your new phone!

the phone does support hspa+ which essentially is 4g... it doesnt support lte
as for the straight talk...you will get as fast as straight talk allows...
Could someone tell me you what kind of signal strength you're showing? Menu > Settings > About phone > Status > Signal strength.
I am pretty sure my Note is defective.
How can I tell if I am actually using AT&T for my network? I ordered an AT&T sim, but I want to make sure they didn't send me a T-Mobile sim.

you said you were rooted... if youre on a custom radio and rom it may be the problem... try flashing full version back to stock and unroot. start from there... if its better then you have your problem... if not then you can get it warrantied cause its back to stock... kill 2 birds with 1 stone

I don't think I'd go that far as to revert to stock and unroot. Why don't you try to test different modems and see if it helps. You'll find a choice of GB modems here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1423396
You can safely test any of the GB radios, they are all compatible. Most of them are CWMR flashable. Just download them to your SD card, reboot to Recovery, 'install zip from SD card', navigate to your downloaded file and flash. Piece of cake.
You can unroot if the suggested testing fails.
Hope this helps.

As it turns out it must be AT&T that's the problem.
I unrooted. No custom rom installed.
I reset to factor settings.
I went to the AT&T story where I got the same signal on my Note as they did on their demo unit. (-51db)
I mentioned earlier, inside and outside my office, which is supposed to be in a solid 4G area, I'm only getting Edge speeds. As Kim Komando says, AT&T has no bars in more places.
If the situation doesn't improve by the time my first month of Straight Talk expires, I'll just not renew and then I'll have to put the Note on eBay. That's too bad because it is the best phone out there IMHO.

Should I leave it as a Verizon variant or convert it?

Hello,
I just moved back home to Guam a few weeks ago from Colorado and I am wondering how I should go about getting service in Guam.
After I pay off my Wife's and I services with Verizon I want to try and connect it with the carriers here. To my understanding, after I pay Verizon the early termination fees etc, the phones should be unlocked*carrier unlocked*?
The phones in question are the HTC 10*mine* and S7 Edge*wife's*, we spoke with Verizon before we left, they told us that the phones are unlocked already and wouldn't have any issues using other carriers.
Should I change the HTC 10 to the Unlocked variant is this even possible? I've read about unlocking it to T-mobile or ATT etc so should I leave it and see what my local carriers can do or should I get it in an unlocked carrier state?
Before we left I used a Sprint variant of the M7, lots have changed since then, I didn't have to do anything to change the MID etc, I was sorta gimped on Data connection, but that was a few years ago, NO 4g LTE, but now the local carriers are on it.
Thanks for your time
If you stay with Verizon, keep the stock software. Also you're already sim-unlocked.
If you change to a GSM carrier, not sure the VZW software will work or not but you can definitely "convert" it to the U.S Unlocked version. That's the easiest/safest way since both phones have the same MID. You'll need S-off ($25).
I am S-off already.
Would being U.S unlocked be a viable option to not have issues trying to connect with local carriers?

First, great info above me. 2nd, you could actually go ahead and superCID and run latest 1.96.617.20 US Unlocked RUU. I'd say the best method is to try them out, RUU or firmware. If on a custom ROM and say chose VZW, you'd have to flash again and chose US unlocked. If you are on stock ROM then I'd try and see if it works as vzw says. If not I'd flash The Us unlocked firmware (modified for vzw you may need the radio.img and cardio.img that is normally removed). Best of luck my friend. I hope all goes well!
Will I have issues flashing viper after SuperCID?
OR should I go down to my carrier and try my luck as the device stands?
Thanks a lot!

No issues at all. Supercid, basically makes it so you can flash any firmware and other things like RUU from other carriers like us unlocked -- (so make sure you know what you're flashing!!!) .
I'm not sure of your carrier or what they'd say. I'd honestly play it by ear and see what happens. I have faith that with the 10 you will be able to get everything working; although I can't say for sure.

I'm using a Verizon phone flashed with Unlocked ruu on a GSM network. The conversion improved the phone for me. Better reception in my area, able to connect to more lte bands, txt msgs come/go faster, and the initial connection to the network after boot up or getting outta airplane mode is much faster since I got away from VZW stock software. Also you get OTA updates as they become available, and you don't have to deal with Verizon's worthless software modifications like no battery saver mode, Wi-Fi notifications, etc if you're gonna stay stock.
Flashing the Unlocked firmware is your best bet. The only thing I'll add is that if possible find out what bands are being used by the carriers over there, and see if its compatible.
HTC 10 Unlocked Band Support:
LTE Bands FDD 2,3,4,5,7,12,13,17,29; 2G GSM/GPRS/EDGE - 850/900/1800/1900; 3G UMTS - 850/AWS/900/1900/2100; LTE - FDD - B28/B12/B13/B17/B29/B20/B5/B4/B3/B2/B1/B30/B7.

Nothing preventing you to convert from VZW to U.S Unlocked, as long as you're s-off. I'm running Unlocked Oreo on my VZW variant.
