Can Galaxy Tab use external hard drive for movies? - Galaxy Tab General

Is it possible? Or do all movies need to be moved over to the internal/SDHC card first? Im going to be picking up a Galaxy Tab today and was curious. Thanks!

There's no USB connection (or support) for external drives, if that's what you were thinking.

Ok thanks for the response.
Edit: Anyone have any luck streaming with Tversity Media Server on their tab?

If it's DNLA compliant, it should stream just fine, using the AllShare app on the Tab.

DLNA

Hi
Does new Galaxy 10.1 WiFi only 16GB come with DLNA connectivity (like Tab 7.0) or not? Not able to understand it even on samsung.com site...
the 10.1 comes with stock android 3.1 so.. no, it does not have dlna support out of the box.
Here you go: http://www.samsung.de/de/Privatkund...T-P7500UWDDBT/detail.aspx?atab=specifications
DivX support Yes (This feature is available in Q3 with a software update.)
And I think I saw it somewhere associated with DLNA.
http://mq8xow.blu.livefilestore.com...uEN6yCiliNRgOkyaCJHW7td9PneQ7J/001.jpg?psid=1
as far as I remember DLNA was going to come later (probably when they push TouchWiz)

DLNA comes with the Allshare app, which is part of TW afaik.
I plan to use it to both send and recieve media from my XBMC box. Saves me from buying a HDMI adapter
I'm using imediashare to stream videos from tab/youtube to TV through xbox/NMT player. Not sure how it connects (uPnP or DLNA) but it works
I downloaded the imediashare app and it works like a dream with my PS3. 1080p? No lag, no problems whatsoever.
maybe try to install the Allshare apk from the SGS 2 ?
Anybody else try out imediashare?
It tells me it is not compatible with the GT 10.1.
I've tried netFront connect
I've tried the following so far:
ALLSHARE - does not even start!
AMEDIA CONTROL - can reach the dlna server and browse the directories but video don't start.
SKIFTA - reach the server, browse directories but video don't play. Just images if paused.
NETFRONT - reach the server but more often than not it freezes.
It seems DLNA compatibility is not possible so far.
BubbleUPnP works everytime - content from Host (Ubuntu) or USB stick in the back of the router.
try plex for android and imediashare

[Q] Any Mac Users Have Any Advice For Copying HD Video Files to Tab 10.1?

Any advice on the best way to use a Mac to transfer Avi\Mkv files to the tab? Since the Mass Storage Mode doesn't work on Mac on this tab, anyone have any tips on moving files to it?
I did it once, right after I/O to have a movie to watch on the plane home. It involved using VMware and a whole lot of swearing -- not worth doing again. It was pretty funny at breakfast the morning after they handed them out. MBPs were, by far, the most numerous computers I saw there and lots of people were noting that that it was crazy they were such a PIA to connect to a mac.
I dont have a mac but i use WiFi FTP Box to move files to and from my Devices.
(Epic 4G, Galaxy Tab 7 and 10.1)

Its nice because you can use it anywhere that has a network and a computer with FTP access. Make sure you read the Description, it tells you all the settings you need.
I use file expert. You connect via wifi. Then you can use a browser window or FTP to upload. I have the info saved on my FTP program and I can upload anything quick and easy

It baffles me... Kies Mini nor Kies Beta for Mac are Galaxy Tab 10.1 compatible. So strange. Very off-putting for a device that's trying to take over iPad Marketshare.

I just installed file expert. Pretty half-assed, haha. Samsung needs to get their **** together for this to be anything close to a media device the iPad is. iPad is successful because it doesn't matter if u use windows or mac, it just works.

Best thing is to convert your videos to mp4 before transferring to the Tab to save you the hassle of guessing if this video will play "jittery" or not. I convert everything i have to mp4 because nowadays everything will play mp4 just fine.
I use VisualHub (no longer in development) and Handbrake (free and very good).
As for file transfers, apps like WifiExplorer Pro create a sort of FTP server between your Tab and Mac and use the wifi network to transfer files to the Tab. Even Estrongs File Manager has the option, just manually input the I.P address of your Mac and turn on file sharing (specify folders to share in sharing preferences) on the Mac.
Lastly, yes, the media experience on Android vs iPad is sad really.

Use moboplayer with the correct codec pack.
I've copied numerous videos in several formats to my tab (via swiftp (also on a mac)), and moboplayer hasnt failed one yet. Upconversion on MoboPlayer is much smoother than that on vplayer. As a matter of fact, my son is watching a movie on it right now.

Odd, that's the same setup I use and i have yet to have a video act up in it.

Streaming network media (movies, music, etc.) to the tab

On my old Windows Phone, I was always able to click on a media file and it would instantly start buffering and then start playing. With Android, I can't seem to stream. It wants to download the file locally first then start playing. If the video I'm watching is rather large, that's a long wait time. Any advice?

Use a different file manager. Root Explorer does exactly what you said but File Manager HD (Honeycomb) doesn't do that.

How do I get Root Explorer to access the LAN?
Maybe I've typed it wrong...
Root Explorer will download the file.
File Manager HD (Honeycomb) will ask you what to do with it and you'll be able to stream it.
You can access LAN if you install cifs module for your kernel and use mount manager or similar app to mount the shares.

Either is fine, but UPNPlay worked great!!!! Skifta didn't load folders with a large amount of videos, but UPN worked perfectly (AND solved my other problem thread regarding thumbnails of videos).
Thanks so much for the suggestions!
Is there anything decent for SMB?
Wow, I gotta say that UpNPlay works extremely well. It(paired with moboplayer) does everything I need it to do. Good suggestion. Since I could never get clear.fi to work, I assumed it was just a native 3.0 issue and I would have to wait til 3.1 for it to get fixed.

Actually it's quite the opposite with my device.
But I'm using CIFS so maybe it behaves differently because Root Explorer always downloads and File Manager always opens files on my device when I'm using CIFS to access networks shares.
I got my Iconia today after 'testing' the display model at my work.
I have been using Buzz Player, which I also use on my iPhone (don't hate me for it)
I can stream videos across the network from from NAS plugged directly into router
Cheers
i use ANDsmb for smb file viewing. Brilliant app and free too

You cannot stream from an FTP. FTPs are pretty much an all or nothing type transfer protocol.

It takes 62 seconds to download this particular 563MB video. But 3.5 seconds to play it after double clicking, so I'm pretty sure it's not downloading then playing.

Allshare and DLNA?

I want to stream a few movies from my tablet to my Samsung LED t.v like I can with my SGS2, but it seems as if the tab 10.1 doesn't have allshare.
I've googled it and found that it's supposed to have DLNA and allshare. What can I do?
Think it's a waiting game. Should get it from Samsung as an update. Eventually.
That's what I've heard anyway...

The gtab 10.1 came with stock HC3.1. Allshare/Dnla is a sammy product that requires the Touchwiz libraries. Expect to see it once TW4 officially drops for the tablet.

Well, just to keep this thread alive, where is AllShare? Now, even after the official release of TouchWiz, still no AllShare.
The iMediaShare app will do the same, although it's not tablet-ready. I've been using it to send TED videos to my TV this afternoon. Free.
i use skifta. it works like allshare and will stream mkv files too so long as there is a player capable of playing mkv files on your tablet.

READ PHONE STATE AND IDENTITYAllows the application to access the phone features of the device. An application with this permission can determine the phone number and serial number of this phone, whether a call is active, the number that call is connected to and the like.

So long as your tablet isn't a phone I wouldn't worry about it. I've got it installed mine, and although the UI doesn't stretch to fill the big screen, the media lists do. When Allshare shows up, and if it works with my LG TV then I'll delete imediashare. Only suggested it as a placeholder until Samsung gets around to providing a solution.
Still have no idea about the suggestion by a salesclerk who stated that the Tablet could play your TV's content. The only way I get that done is if I'm lucky enough to find the same show on the network's web site and play it from there.
Media players need to know when the phone is in use so you aren't hearing asain midget porn in the background while talking to grandma..

For streaming movies, photos from your PC along with several Tab resident services, (YouTube, Shoutcast Flickr, Picasa and others), check out ZappoTV. The Android version is new and a work in progress but the iOS version is pretty solid.
You will need a compatible device attached to your TV or AV Receiver. I use the WDTV Live Plus but there are a number of others that work very well. You will also need a media server installed on your PC, (I use Tversity).
With this setup, I can fire up the Tab, turn my AV receiver to the appropriate input and control everything from my comfy leather chair. I am not sure if this app will stream content stored on the Tab itself but just about anything on the PC is available.
For playing music on a stereo system connected to a media server, the Android version of ZappoTV is not as good as it needs to be. A better app if you just want to use the Tab to manage and play your PC-based music library is 2Player.
Now if someone would figure out a way to control Pandora with the Tab and send the output to a media device like my WDTV, I would be a really happy camper.

Play my movies via Wifi LAN?

When I have movies or pictures, I can use my media player that finds my laptop on the network and I can simply open or stream those files via wifi.
My question is how can I share files on my S7? How can I make my S7 discoverable on the network like my laptop does? Anyone know?
Thanks!
